  • Heacham, Norfolk.
Various shots show Stan Walduck sitting outside his house and cleaning several pairs of shoes; a baby sits behind him in a pram. Numerous children of different ages run out of the house and pick up their shoes. Stan kisses his wife, Hedy, goodbye then walks out of the garden gate.
Commentator says Stan set up his own business as 'odd job man supreme' in order to feed and clothe his nine children. We then see Stan at work in several jobs; he delivers letters as the village postman, digs in the graveyard as the parish gravedigger (and stops for a hot drink from a thermos), cleans windows with Hedy, polishes a fire engine as the village fireman, and arrives at a house to sweep the chimney. C/U of a sign reading 'Frying from 7.30' then we see Stan working in a fish and chip shop.
Note: on file are two newspaper articles about Stan and his many jobs. Cuts exist - see separate record.

its incredible to have such documented recording of your great grandfather! 9 children too! i as a parent cant imagine more than 2 haha! i believe in modern words his job would be considered a "General Contractor?" or a "All Jobs Man" ? Sorry English is not my first language. and i apologize is it is worded wrongly( or worse rudely ).

@@LinksRoyal ''Odd Job'' is the term used for someone who does different jobs, usually small jobs - but this man certainly works very hard indeed at all his jobs...I'd not call being a Sexton {Gravedigger} an ''odd job'' as it is physically hard work.

That vans number plate is worth a bob or two ! On a more serious note, he may have a lot of kids, but at least he is making sure he can support them. I don't suppose the benefit system was so generous in 1961.

To those wondering why he had so many kids, it was quite common back then. In the 60's they only just started coming out with cures for things like polio, so people had many children just to beat the odds they would all be dead by adulthood. Because all the medicine came out, they had a very large amount of children they didn't expect to live. On top of that life was very grim and making babies was one of the only breaks people had.
edit: forgot to mention the location being so close to the sea, he was probably eating a lot of sea food, which tends to be a potent aphrodisiac. They blame this on why London's population is so big.

my question is why would he need so many different jobs and how would he be able to schedule all the jobs?
if certain jobs that didnt pay so much why would he work those? like ditch diggers get paid very little...
    mail carrier
    ditch digger
    fireman
    chimney cleaner
    fast food cook/cashier/waiter
if we just go off of modern pay scales.
if you're a mail man or fireman you're basically set. in this case this man worked both jobs.
you don't need to be a ditch digger/chimney cleaner/ or fast food worker
unless you were paid very little in 1961....

By the sounds of it, apart from helping him clean windows. His wife was a housewife, so the only income is from Stan for himself, his wife and nine children.
That’s all the household bills and a massive weekly food shop. Plus clothing throughout the year for eleven people, and all other incidentals.
There was also hardly any benefits compared to today.
