I joined the Royal navy at HMS Ganges aged 15 on 16th September 1970, by 3.30 that afternoon I'd signed on for 12 years and by 3.45 id signed the official secrets act. That's all I want to say about it.
I remember a neighbour in the 1980's who couldn't wait to join the army then when he did he bought himself out a.s.a.p. We used to sing that song by Status Quo outside his house 'In the army now wo oh oh we're in the army'. Another friend served 12yrs, he loved, good for him. I was only ever in the boy's brigade from 10-16yrs of age, hated the marches at weekends and guess it put me off joining one of the forces when i left school. Great video and thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is a lovely film withe Terry played by Roger Tonge who played Sandy Richardson in Crossroads from 1964 - 1981 when sadly he died age 35 Hodgkin's Disease which he battled with for a good number of years. Not sure if this was made before Crossroads or in his yearly time in the show. I see Peggy Atchison who played Vi Bundle also featured briefly. The girl in the boat was also in Crossroads for a time in 1977. Lovely to see Roger like this as so many of the early episodes are lost. There are not many before 1972 when he became a paraplegic in the show following the storyline of an accident. Roger always looked so young in those early years but was actually 18 when Crossroads started and gave up his job in the post office to get the part.
OH yes finished my apprenticeship in 1969 as a sparks £20 a week , brought our first bungalow . New for £4250 in 1972 , Last wages 44 years later £1,250 a week , Always a fully paid up member of the SELF PRESERVANTION PARTY and still have that tune as the ring tone on my mobile today . 😉
Village Green Preservation Society? The Kinks made wonderful music, songs and poetry. Listened to recently and realized that Ray Davis was entirely serious. What a genius lyricist!
Ha ha, I thought this was great. Most of us back then left school at 15 and either went into the building trade or joined the forces. 2 of my brothers joined up and the other 3 of us went into the building trade. Great days. 👍👍
Battersea funfair! We used to run riot in the ruins about 1970, chased by park wardens or security! Sky walk through the trees was fairly dangerous by then.
Quite a swim trial if you weren’t already confident in the water and being submerged. That’s so much different than surface swimming or just being generally fit. One day, though, brief training like that could save your life.
It's actually really easy. Normal breath in, lifejacket inflated and you are racing to the surface like cork, you have to exhale quite hard all the way, or risk bursting your lungs.
It is a sad story. He was a talented and well liked actor but had a haematological disorder and he died at an early age. He was in Crossroads in the 1970s.
I remember signing up for the cub scouts back in the day. Suddenly in my uniform I was a hit with the beatches, they went mad for my woggle. 👍 it’s all good
I'm same age as the guy who joined the navy. I'm not dead nor in an old folks home. I work two part time jobs enjoy my life and I put it all down to learning how to look after myself whilst I was in the navy for 22 years.
It is a sad story. He was a talented and much liked actor but he had a chronic haematological disorder which affected his growth and he died young. He was famous as "Sandy" in Crossroads.
What many folks don't know is that Seaman Sandy caught syphilis following a visit to some whoehouse in Nigeria which rotted his brain and he died at the young age of 35 .
Wonderful period to be young and alive!
Agree. Much better than now.
Back when you could wear your uniform without being stabbed in the street.
That stopped around the 80s with the IRA. We were told not to even use kitbags as the IRA were targeting servicemen in transport hubs.

Were you in the South Atlantic in 1981 ? Hope it wasn't the Galahad 😲
Terrific. Can’t fault your brevity 😊

Electrician?
How long was your apprenticeship?
I’m a spark in the states.
Is your pension nice?
It's the Self Preservation Society
Village Green Preservation Society?
The Kinks made wonderful music, songs and poetry. Listened to recently and realized that Ray Davis was entirely serious.
What a genius lyricist!
@@GT380manSelf Preservation Society from the Italian Job.
I love how he still looks like a tiny 13 year old the entire time.
Our Uncle Albert was in the Navy. His opening line was; 'During the war, ....'

Published 1965 by the Imperial War Museum.
He was in Crossroads! Thought I recognised him.
Aye it was before his wheelchair antics😄
I knew I knew him. Of course Thank you
@@Bigbawz364 hardly antics, he developed Hodgkin’s lymphoma and they let him play the part in his wheelchair, poor sod was dead at 35!
Would be great if I could find the rest of the film.
Part 1 is definitely on here. This is part 2. Idk if there’s supposed to be a part 3
That's the life, 1960's style. See the world, good grub, dolly birds everywhere. Wonder why my mate bought himself out?
He didnt like being in the barrel.
Yes. Probably because an all-male environment might be conducive to homosexuality. You know the old saying - 'Join the Navy . . . and feel a Man'.
He wanted a life
@Aerojet01 user-wp8vy is probably a pongo, envy.
People who were in the Navy love nothing more than to tell you they were in the Navy.
And why not? They were proud to be in the Senior Service.
Not at all true. However, I do remember this guy, he was a Killick...
Well it was all going great then he joined a sub, That's the end of the runs ashore.
Battersea funfair! We used to run riot in the ruins about 1970, chased by park wardens or security! Sky walk through the trees was fairly dangerous by then.
A real muscle bosun, that lad..

Roger Tonge, or Sandy Richardson.
one of the best videos you have done ii my opinion great work
One of those cadets was the late Roger Tonge, Sandy in Crossroads.
Oh yeah
That's because he was an actor, and likely earning 20 times as much as a sailor for pretending to be a sailor
Imagine wearing that uniform around the park , you'd get started on by the pc brigade or worse
Stabbed by some 'religion of peace' types I reckon.
Was this intended as as recruitment video?
Where is the rest of the film? I was so enjoying it!
0:47 Ah yes, our young tars ashore with a couple of 'bints' and the hope of a furtive fumble in the park! The music is awesome!
Great ....times
If you play the game right you’ll be at the Crossroads (Motel )
And die young.
So THAT'S where I've seen him before! Mind you, his accent is a dead giveaway!
Is this an actual film???? I wanna see it all 😊
Really enjoyable
the music is very cool
Didn't hear them tell him to exhale all the way up in that escape tank. He would've had an embolism if he had held his breath.
Roger Tonge played the son of Meg Richardson in crossroads and died in 1981 at 35 years old. Tragic,
@4.43
On Bournemouth Beach , looooooks fkn freezing
is there another part to this please?
This is when the Navy had more than one ship at sea at a time
He looks about 12 years old.
and sounded like Donald Duck
It is a sad story. He was a talented and well liked actor but had a haematological disorder and he died at an early age. He was in Crossroads in the 1970s.
4.21......one powerful reason for joining the Royal Navy.........
That young lad looks about 12 year old 🤣🤣🤣🤣🇬🇧🇬🇧
Where is that High Street he is shown walking down? The bus is United Counties, so Wellingborough, Kettering, Bedford, Northampton?
I have a feeling its Luton.
It is Luton.
Please tell me theres a part 3
good time to be a Jolly Jack Tar
Where is the rest ?
Drill holes all days....
In real life his brother would of said
Oh yeah thats what you'll be doing on the ship
Lol
would have said! not would of said.

What's eating that older brother?
Sorry what country is this ?
Good point.
Is the Royal Navy not a clue ?

This country no longer exists.
Ah the good old Cold War, the threat of total nuclear annihilation at any point. Miss those days.

Just doing what most of the sailors did. The RN has a bad record of 16 year olds realizing they made a terrible mistake.
Join the navy and become a bird magnet
Hard to imagine this blokes probably dead or in an old peoples home now.

he died at about 30 !
Food still looks as terrible!
Why is that child running round with grown women and working with men?
Men was so lucky in them days with them thin ladies not like todays 🐳
Cannon fodder

Roger Tonge did die tragically early at the age of 35 but he had Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Please don't spew such crap. The actor died in his thirties from an unfortunate illness. Please show some respect.
Respect Wolfgang please
