For some reason I can't explain I didn't want to watch it for a long long time. Then a couple of months ago I binged the entire 4 seasons in like a week or two. Great show, really loved it. Also, his cameo in Crisis on infinite earth made me laugh hard.
Hmm. Well the title should always just be a pun on the setting or circumstance of the crime, so this is a stab in the dark, here.... oh... wait... A Stab in The Dark: A Benoit Blanc Mystery
Lucifer is actually really great. I watched the pilot just to see how badly they surely would screw up Neil Gaiman's character, and got hooked on the characters... They're fun and unusual. I like the idea that Lucifer becomes curious about why this one human is different... After his long life, something different would be a lure. And the idea that he feels it's his duty to deal out justice makes perfect sense as well.
For Knives Out 3 I need him to drop the southern accent and come out with his British accent revealing he fled England because a serial killer was stalking him
I would say the original idea came from Neil gaiman's sandman comic, because that came far earlier than DC's lucifer comic But the tv lucifer is definitely part of their universe since the crossover arc

I actually really appreciate the Lucifer discussion, since i've seen it all and read the Neil Gaiman Vertigo comic, I was quite entertained by shock of it's premise lol
I loved the comic, but I didn't like the series too much, to be honest. It felt too sit-com like and his behaviour doesn't fit too much with someone who is literally the devil. Like, obviously the point is that he is being scapegoated and all, but even then, someone that is literally a fallen angel should be way more pragmatic and less concerned with 21st-century human morality. Not like he should be like an edgy boy or something like that, but I think Gaiman's portrayal is spot on for what I mean: his Lucifer has his own personal morality and his own reasons, but he is still an inhuman being and he does not behave like a human, he behaves like a timeless ancient creature with an understanding of the universe and its forces that we can barely comprehend. I might have not watched the series long enough though. I went through around three-quarters of the first season before I got tired of it and moved on. It may get better later.
oh right on, you're the only other person I've seen use a Strangelove reference for their idea for the sequel name, I did that on twitter last week lol
Dan and Spencer should binge Lucifer because it's a lot of fun. The Lucifer of the show doesn't think he is evil. He believes he punishes evil doers, so helping the LAPD is already his MO.
I love these commentaries and ALWAYS appreciate the rendering time spent to entertainment us. However, just one lingering question why do I have a strong desire to acquire a beignet?
I remember reading on twitter that a fan floated the idea of 'every sequel craig's accent changes for no explained reason' to ryan johnson and he thought it was a funny idea. I can't find that thread offhand though.
OMG Columbo! That was my jam growing up. Peter Falk was fantastic. Hilarious how everyone always thought he was a senile, old coot detective. But my boy Columbo had that eagle eye, solving them cases everytime! 🕵👍🏽
ok so my fav part was the lucifer talk, and just so you know, lon's description was 100% accurate! the show's fun. mostly because tom ellis plays it all with just the perfect amount of knowing camp...it's on netflix now. they picked it up when fox cancelled it.
I feel like the crazy accent of the detective might be a riff on agatha christie's hercule poirot with his over the top belgium accent. ...whoops, Lon already said that

"Random profession/person works with the cops" is my favorite genre. There was that one where a magician used his magic skills to help solve crimes. Good stuff.
Speaking of Lucifer and Castle, they're booth the same in a long line of, "ones a straight laced by the book cop, and the other is a civilian with a quirk or supernatural ability that helps them solve crimes" like izombie, monk, psyched. It's such a troupe it was a joke in Forgetting Sara Marshall. I think. Love the show and community as an adult who consumes media like it's water, I love that there's a place to some degree be a part of these conversations.
I can speak to the author/film money question! An established, older, wildly popular author could 100% be raking in piles of dough without any movie adaptations, though it is rare. Usually it's a big movie that creates the feedback loop for an author that starts to generate millions and millions in revenue. And then, yes, an author with clout can leverage to get 7 figures just for an option, and they usually also get percentages on the backend as a producer. That's the big leagues. Otherwise, authors without power may only get a few thousand for an option (and typically the movie is never made). I digress. Nora Roberts is a good example. She makes 20 million plus a year, and her only movie adaptations are some Lifetime movies, but nothing more recent than 2011. But she's a prolific writer and is one of the most popular, wealthiest authors on the planet. So if he's modeled after someone like her, it is possible. But then it IS a great motive for murder b/c you could exponentially double or triple your profits by starting to option and make movies of those books...
This is only the second time (I remember) hearing anything, at all, about this movie, and the very first time i've seen anything about it. A lot of your descriptions reminded me of the "Clue" movie thanks guys :-) Oh And I do believe "Lucifer" is based n a comic book series.(And the show is surprisingly good, considering it's concept) (If you want to find a more modern mystery writer version of Stephen King, I'd go with James Patterson)
Harlan didn't "want" to kill himself - he did it because he thought that Marta overdosed him, so not to let the blame on her for it he committed suicide.
I think the sequel title should be Swords Drawn. I agree that it should be a completely different mystery, but I think Benoit Blanc should take on Marta in a His Girl Friday type role.
It might be fun to have some / all of the cast come back *playing different characters* (except for Craig still Blanc, of course). Kind of like a theatre company putting on a different show. That would presumably constrain the writing to write roles the actors could play, though. Someone suggested that idea in comments on another video and I still think it would be fun. Or more realistically, I could see Marta getting involved somehow with a new Benoit Blanc case in Spoons Up / Noun Verb. I'm not sure how well that would work; probably not just him coming to her for help with a puzzle, but maybe her newfound resources / money. And then she gets caught up in things and hijinks ensue. The way I'm describing it sounds dumb; hopefully if it happens, it will be done well. None of the other characters need to come back; the most interesting moments of those characters were already in Knives Out. Although *spoiler* that invisible ink note Linda (Jamie Lee Curtis) read at the end of the movie, about her husband's affair. *end spoiler* written by Harlan, could provide new conflict that leads to another mystery. But I think it would be better to have an entirely different mystery, even if one or two characters show up for cameos or small parts.
Ya know, if you don't know Lucifer (the TV show) is based on the DC comic... just hearing about the premise makes no sense lol. I still vote for a Lucifer/Constantine cross over.

Dan and Spencer hearing about the plot of Lucifer for the first time is comedy gold !
I walked into work on Sunday and my boss was watching Lucifer. I immediately started listening to this commentary.
I'm still laughing about the "Fear of Bernie Sanders" thing...
Stefan Joeres I saw that😆😂
"The rest of this commentary will be Lucifer questions."
I am 110% here for this.
Same same, take my upvote LuciFam
This video was a 35 minute excuse for them to try out their southern accents and I loved every second of it.
Also Spoons Up is an incredible title.

This was a great Lucifer honest trailer commentary for a few minutes
I want a whole southern man learning about Lucifer video
I so want to see an Honest Trailer for Lucifer now 😎
This movie is the most fun I had in theaters last year. So good.
'Police procedurals where the consultant main character shouldn't be anywhere near a crime scene' is an incredibly popular genre in tv
Yeah that's so true ...
Knives Out. Part 2 is definitely Forks In
Yes, Lon, "Lucifer" has an absolutely, terribly stupid premise, but is actually a really good show
Highly recommend😈
Yes🎉🎉🎉 that was awesome that Lon knows of, and watches the fantastic series 😉
I'm frankly surprised the rest of them hadn't heard of it...
It is a fun show! You guys should check it out!

More Lucifer discussion. That was hilarious

Sequel: have the detective in the NE with a Boston accent.
That would actually be funny if the guy took on other persona's for different cases.
So you mean to tell me “forks over knives” is not a prequel to this movie? I am so confused.
Knives Out was actually filmed in Massachusetts, so Daniel Craig missed his chance to do a Boston accent.
I remember reading on twitter that a fan floated the idea of 'every sequel craig's accent changes for no explained reason' to ryan johnson and he thought it was a funny idea. I can't find that thread offhand though.
