The Ditto eyes is a well known meme in Pokemon though...they literally have a line of plushies of various pokemon with ditto eyes.
That's how Ditto works, it's not a meme.
@@Koutakami0 It was just a ditto who can't transform well. Not all ditto transform like that
And that Aether Foundation episode where Ash finally learns (after how many years and battles with them) that their eyes are tiny dots; then tries to find it among Quagsire.
I believe it was just a reference to anime
The Ditto having weird eyes was a reference to an anime episode where one particular Ditto could perfectly replicate other Pokemon except for it's face/eyes. Dittos in general can completely replicate other mons, that's kind of their gimmick.
I forgot about that episode 😂
"he still got that damn face!" lol
When I first saw this movie, my assumption was that the kid inhaling the gas was what gave him the ability to understand Pikachu. But the story, uh, decided to go a different direction.
Also, I think the girl's weird old-timey-speak intro is meant to be taken as her putting on airs. After all, she's not actually an investigative journalist, she's just an assistant. You know, fake it til you make it, and all that. She drops it because the next time they meet up, it's at her real job (if I remember correctly).
Something didn't sound right so I looked it up: The movie from Home Alone is Angels with Filthy Souls. Angels with Dirty Faces is a real movie.
Yes! Thank you--I was just going to post that...it's a very good 1938 James Cagney movie--chilling ending.
Thank you for catching this so I didn't have to leave a nerd-rage comment! Lol
"Keep the change, ya filthy animal!"
You forgot to say um actually
Thank you! I wasn’t sure but I knew something was off.
As for Tim not recognizing his father’s voice, I think that’s understandable. Harry left when he was 10, right after his mother died. Tim is 21 during the events of movie so 11 years have gone by since Tim has seen his father. It makes sense he wouldn’t remember his voice, at least to me.
My uncle passed away when I was 8, so about 12 years have gone by now. He and I were very close before he passed. Though so much time has gone by, that I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve forgotten how he sounded like.
Honestly, I forget people's voice like 3 minutes after seeing them
Tim also hasn’t been interested in reconciling with Harry, he only comes to Rhyme City to close off his father’s affairs after being led to believe he’s dead.
@Jay Barry
That’s true, they’ve been estranged for years. I’m willing to bet they never spoke on the phone either. I can totally see Harry attempting to call and but Tim was never interested in talking to him.
Was Joe so mad at last week's movie he didn't show up for this one?
Apparently he never watched this movie! 😂
He needs a week to recover
Can you guys spend a brief moment in each Commentary video to point out where the Alan Raptor is? Your editor did an amazing job hiding him in this video, definitely fooled me, but it would be a good shout-out to his work each week.
I couldn't find it, where was it?
TBA 18:11 left side of the closest tree to the camera. He’s rotated 90 degrees and blends in with the tree, camouflaged as branches. Change the play speed to the slowest speed to help. You can only see him for about a split second before the wide mountain shot jumps in.
goatcheese4me thanks boss.
at the end of the year they should do something. or like release the time stamps.
The Japanese VA of Detective Pikachu in the video game does the Japanese dubbing for Danny Devito’s roles, which is where the idea for the petition came from.
Ah, so that makes more sense now! Still thing it wouldn't have worked for the movie, but at least it's not a total non sequitur.
Isn't Detective Pikachu also a "Great Mouse Detective"?
i thought that was going to be the alternative title for sure!
You deserve a thousand likes for this comment. On a serious note, that is one of the best disney movies ever made.
But he's not "The Great Mouse Detective" lol.
@@ashurgoodman6351I'm pretty sure pikachu is a mouse. You might want to look that up.
@@0me3sI know he's a "mouse" but is he THE great mouse detective. That's the title of the movie "The Great Mouse Detective" not "Great Mouse Detective" as the other person said. It was a joke.
Just a correction: Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) do exist, it's a classic gangster movie by Michael Curtiz with James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart. The parody version from Home Alone (1990), according to IMDB, is named "Angels With Filthy Souls"
I choose you, Honest Trailer Narrator!
Epic voice guy used bewwwwwwbs, it's super offensive :')
When Ryan Reynolds was on Korean Masked Singer, they didn't recognize his voice.
I saw a clip of that, he's a great singer, atlest I thought so.
I want to see pikachu go in ryan reynolds...
- screenjunkies
Apparently he never watched the movie. 😂
They are not forced to fight. The Pokemon's consent is required before they agree to fight. Sometimes they dont want to fight, like Ash's Charizard 😂
How do you explain Paul and his Chimchar?
Gym badges fix that, the more badges you have, the higher the level of the Pokémon that have to obey.
Yeah yeah, sure, and black people really did love working the plantations. If they didnt like it, they could just escape.
KhaanMan66 because Paul was a bas*ard who forced his Pokémon and when someone is in a toxic relationship for so long it becomes one of those thing where you’re ask what you did wrong and try to stay with him/her since you think you won’t find anyone better
Piltheser humans aren’t fire breathing flying monsters
The great mouse detective would’ve been a great joke title for this one. Doesn’t even need altering.
Didn't he last see his dad when he was like 8? and now he is mid/early 20s? That's plenty of time to forget the exact sound of your parents voice, especially without the visuals to associate it with.
I seem to recall him being an absentee father as well. He was never there before or after his wife died. Unless I'm wrong. I probably am.
Yeah I definitely would forget after 12 years.
Dan saying “why?” to Danielle when she said she has to ask DeVito about Pikachu anytime she interviewed him 😂 Best part of the video
It's easy to think he should remember his dad's voice but a lot of time has passed since he was a kid and peoples voices change as they age. Between his fading memory and the likely change in his dad's voice, I could buy it.
The gas was to shutdown the pokemons' higher brain function, making them less resistant to having their bodies snatched, Pikachu didn't need it because it volunteered to give its body and life to save Ryan Reynolds.
Now that I'm 4-for-4 in predicting the Honest Trailers for September, I'm now going to guess the ones for the rest of the year. Let's all come back in 2020 to see if I was right!
*Next week: Batman: The Movie (1966)* ✔️
*10/8: Spider-Man: Far From Home* ✔️
-10/15: Toy Story 4-
_10/22: The Lion King (2019)_ ½
*10/29: The Shining (1980)* ✔️
_11/5: Hobbs & Shaw_ ½
-11/12: Rick and Morty (seasons 1-3)-
-11/19: Ralph Breaks the Internet-
-11/26: Looper-
-12/3: The Grinch trilogy (TV special, 2000 movie, 2018 movie)-
_12/10: IT Chapter Two_ ½
_12/17: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 movie)_ ½
-12/24: 2010's Decade in Review (like the Honest Game Trailer for the 2017 Year in Review)-
Well, looks like I got 5 points from this!
Also, I love the Pikachu on Spencer's shoulder in the thumbnail! We should have more image edits like that, and the ones for Doctor Who!
Also also, was anyone able to find the "Alan" this week? And if so, would that make him a Pokemon in this world? I'm sure it would!
Well I mean, they evidently release the honest trailers the day the movie comes out on Blu Ray, or something they haven't done in a franchise right before the new movie comes out, so it's pretty obvious lol I wouldn't call those predictions xD
We shall see we shall see
The only one on your list that I strongly doubt will happen is Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Some ballsy predictions there. Next week is probably correct and I see you've done some research on release dates of VOD and such... but don't forget that this crew loves doing the unexpected trailer for some random movie just cuz they feel like they thought of some good jokes. So I'd be shocked if even half of these predictions are correct. But let's see.
Best of luck!
I wouldn't include Great Mouse Detective in that list, as it's not a hard-boiled detective story, it's a classic mystery. :)
Buddy cop mobie: Growlith and Officer Jenny
6:55 Actually, Ditto was a reference to Gen1 and Gen2.
Gen2: The Berserk Gene is a fragment of Mewtwo’s DNA that, when consumed by a Pokémon, sharply raised its attack while permanently confusing it. R in Detective Pikachu is used to make Pokémon stronger but become feral, or confused.
Gen1: Many failures to clone Mew, in theory, led to the birth and rise of the Pokémon Ditto. By absorbing Mewtwo DNA, Ditto lost its transformation ability (since Mewtwo can’t learn that move) and destabilized.
Don’t know if this was intentional with “kiss kiss bang bang” reference but “chu” is a manga sound effect for kisses. Layers. Nice.
"I didnt like ditto cus it was creepy"
Well that was the fu*kin point innit?
Re: Likaton being a cruel twist of nature: there are some real-life animals that have (somewhat) real issues like that. There's a version of a boar whose tusks grow curving upwards, so that it's possible for them to stab themselves constantly in the forehead.
In your best Winnie the Pooh voice, say, "Beeeeeeeeewbs."
When they started talking about the Great Mouse Detective, my mind mixed it up with The Rescuers, which is also a great animated detective movie.
1. Zootopia
2. Great Mouse Detective
3. Roger Rabbit
4. Detective Pikachu
WHAT? Roger Rabbit is one of the greatest movies ever made.
Please say 'Starring SynDRONE' for the Spider-man: Far From Home honest trailer when showing Mysterio
Haaris Siddique YAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSS
There’s obviously a lot of really serious *stuff hitting the fan in recent days, and so the fact that my day today included Dan Murrell saying, “I feel like I would know the voice of either of my parents even if it were coming out of a small, fuzzy creature” 😀😀.....AMAZING!! Thanks for all the laughs, guys- you all rock.
Please say 'Starring Tom Holland' for the Spider-man:Far From Home honest trailer showing the scene where he's in the Netherlands
I concur! BEST SCENE EVER!
Or at least 'Tom in Holland' lol
and hes wearing a holland top
lypzethdurron mk6rfc1
It's fine the way it is! Quit messing with the classics!
I love Dan's "Why?" 10:28...Keeping it real Dan lol
Most Pokemon are just kinda like housepets with powers, but yeah some of them are really terrifying to imagine in a real-world setting. Case in point: every Ghost-type Pokemon.
Colin VandenBerg not every ghost type have you seen Misdreavus that one’s pretty cute in my opinion
@@queeneon yeah it's pretty cute, but even though it's probably the tamest Ghost type, it's Pokedex entries mention how it loves to play tricks on people and scare them .
Such a strange detail to get stuck on. There are zero reasons why any sequel or prequel would have to recycle the "merged/mind/body-swap" trope. You could just have a father/son partnership, with Pokémon, and Ryan Reynolds gets actual facetime in the franchise. Or it could have TOTALLY DIFFERENT humans as the main characters... This served as a fine live-action introduction to the world of Pokémon, now they can go in many directions.
I think the pokemon movies are gonna be an anthology
@@devalphamon7289 That would be perfect.
Whoever decided for the thumbnail to put the pikachu on Spencer's shoulder is the mvp of this video!
About the Danny Devito thing. I believe it got started when the first Detective Pikachu trailer was released in Japan and wasn't announced for America/Europe yet. The Japanese guy voicing him was super gruff, so people wanted Danny Devito to play the Pikachu in English. Which he didn't. Of course, this momentum carried over to the movie.
For Lon, the voice of Pikachu in the original Japanese version is the one who sounds like Danny Devito, not the English dub of the game.
Tim was a kid when his mother died and Harry buried himself in his work, and Tim had purposefully cut Harry out of his life when he went to stay with his grandmother (who is Dayna from Blake’s 7!). So it makes sense that he wouldn’t recognise Pikachu speaking with his father’s voice. It also explains why he doesn’t pick up on Pikachu having Harry’s quirks, he’s spent so long away from Harry he’s probably forgotten most of them. The only one he does remark on is Harry’s TV playing Angels With Dirty Souls, probably a habit he associates with annoyance or disappointment (maybe Harry used to fall asleep in front of old movies instead to spending time with Tim).
I do have a classic Film Noire hot take:
Much like the song Baby It's Cold Outside, out of the context of the time they were made the classic film noire movies tend to come off as pretty problematic. However, in their origional context they were actually pretty progressive in the types of roles offered to women and it's okay to acknowledge that and even praise them for what they were doing at the time. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be updating the roles when making modern day versions of these types of movies. Saying you're just following the genre tropes is essentially just saying, "This is the way it has always been and it was never a problem before now." So praise the genre of film noire, and Baby It's Cold Outside, for their impact on history and for the progressiveness they had back when they were made. But maybe stop singing that song as written, and stop falling into the exact same tropes, because we don't live in that world any more and modern context is VERY different from what it was 50 years ago.
i love that danielle need to ask about pikachu everytime she interviews devito, and dan ask's why, such a potential collision of how things should be.
The Home Alone fake noir is "Angels with Filthy Souls"
Danielle and Lan I would have loved a Pokémon turning to camera and going “squirrel-dle squuir dlle” (it’s a living) lol
6:40 Jon's delivery of that is too funny. Can't stop laughing.
Trust me Dan, you do NOT want to learn more about Pokémon. The more you learn, the less it will make any sense. You have to just watch it, not ask questions, and just go with it, which is damn near impossible for us westerners. Ratagin is one of the best Disney villains that everyone forgets about (including myself), then I remember he exists, and feel ashamed of myself for forgetting such an awesome villain. You combine Scar and Jafar, crank whatever that is up to an 11, and you'll get Ratagin, (and it's awesome) LOL.
Was also hopeful for a Deadpool cameo.
Dan wants to watch the furry version of Bright
Pokemon Ride Along, I'd watch that 😂
That NCAA analogy was lowkey on point.
You can't call Ryan Reynolds every time he's in a movie. Mostly because he's Ryan Reynolds, but also you gotta savor that joke, you know.
NOOOO LON! No word of a lie I was JUST about to finally watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit because the HT reminded me it's been on my watch list for eons - ugh can't believe you spoiled this 30 year-old film for me, inexcusable!
I publicly support the Ryan Reynold's cut where he burst in to defend Detective Pikachu as #1 and then completely take over the rest of the trailer. Or the whole thing. He's Pikachu. He can jump around the whole thing. (Detective Pikachu 2 promo material)
There's no Pluto problem. That's just his kink, man.
All his friends are cool with it.
I'm sorry I thought Ditto was one of the best parts of the movie.
"I take it back, I don't want to know anymore about Pokemon." -Dan
Honestly, this seems fair and I'm right there with him.
Devils advocate: I wouldn’t recognize my fathers voice and I haven’t seen him since I was 12. Voice memory isn’t the most reliable and voices can change overtime. Plus Tim wasn’t close to his dad, so he wouldn’t know much about him. Wasn’t the last joke of the film that he felt like coffee and he didn’t know why?
Madisen Wilde yep so he nor anyone would be able to pickup on those cues since his father didn’t have a coffee addiction prior to turning into a pikachu
I’m NOT that type, i NEVER comment, but there are so many things I wanted to correct them on here lmao.
ikr. 😂😂😂
My hot take on Film Noir: There's a lot more Film Noir fans at an Improv comedy show than there are outside of an Improv comedy show.
Luckitung was cute in an odd way
My favorite part of the movie was finding out MewTwo in this movie is the same MewTwo from the Kanto region which means this is either in the game universe or the anime universe
Glad to hear Cool World was placed at number 3 because of a joke.
Also I hadn't heard Angry Birds Movie 2 was the best reviewed video game adaptation! I enjoyed it a lot. Probably one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while.
Do an honest trailer for the great mouse detective it is my favorite childhood movie and
It never gets any recognition
I never really had a problem with Goofy vs. Pluto. From an outsider perspective, it's the same issue as humans vs. chimpanzees. Allan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series briefly touched on this as well - and the answer is that everyone just accepts it as normal that there are both anthroporophic badgers, as well as "regular" badgers.
The great mouse detective is number one
In most places train tickets are non-refundable & non-transferable. If that's not the case for you guys that's great but I suspect you just don't get the train very often. I appreciate your desire to to be financially considerate & it would be nice if that was the way the world worked. I was once charged an extra £100 on top of the £30 ticket I'd already purchased because it turned out my ticket was technically invalid.
Merging humans with Pikachu, and the whole headgear-interface thing...wait, did we just see Avatar 2?
A horror genre Pokemon movie would be very viable with Ghastly and Haunter. The Lavender Tower arc is a pretty amazing horror story, that involves no slashing! Literally because slashing is Normal attack.
....it's a kids movie guys. Mysteries are gonna be simple
Based on a video game franchise where a 10 year old literally takes down the mafia
I read it as the pokemon being pets/service animals vs show animals. You treat your diabetes service dog different than you treat your Derby winning horse.
An aspiring DJ probably gets a Louder as a pokemon, a cop probably gets a Growlithe. Pokemon Trainers get several pokemon & spend the majority of their time training them.
Like that Charizard was clearly the guy's pet. When Tim starts stomping on it's tail the guy yells "What are you doing to my baby??" because that's his pet & Tim's not fighting fair (even though they cheated first)
Rhyme City just focuses on strengthening their bond with a single pet, while trainers are more like race/show horse owners & trainers.
Ryan Reynolds is going full "Face off" in the next Pokémon Movie. Nicolas Cage will play psyduck
I know it’s a joke, but... I want this...
I can answer the question at 9:09 which is most Pokémon are willing doing what their trainers/companions/friend wants to do and it’s seen through out the tv show most famously with the suirtal squad who wants to help officer Jenny with putting out fires, ash’s apipom who wants to do contests than battles, and mewoth who will vocally voice his opinion if he doesn’t agree with Jesse and James so yes most Pokémon just do what they want unless the end up like mewtwo being controlled by geovani (though if I missed something feel free to place your opinion or correct me)
i really like that yall have a "cannon" answer and then the "real" answer
It's great to find out how this film is unique and promising but could've merged the Pokemon battles with the detective story. Another interesting and entertaining commentary. Keep it up!
I dont think they wanted to have the fighting be the first thing people out of pokemon, they wanted people who dont understand pokemon to understand that pokemon are smart enough to consent to battle before giving us a full battle movie.
there was ONE ditto in the first season, i think, that couldn't control his transformation 100% so when changed into other pokemons he had weird eyes, but that wasn't the case for any other normal pokemon. The episode, is based in that fact, his trainer was a Theater actress doing her best to help Ditto to do a complete, perfect, transformation. And I think that he does do a perfect human transformation at the end of the episode ( to trick team rocket.... maybe ? ).
i want to see a movie made exclusively by critics just to know if it'll be the most absolutely perfect movie ever made... and then see if screen junkies can still tear it apart
To be fair, you said the list was "Hard-boiled" Detective movies, and Great Mouse Detective is Sherlock Holmes, hardly gritty enough to be considered for that category. Still better than Cool World though.
the trailer felt like my dad made that trailer now I know why LOL
This movie was a love letter to Pokemon fans. There are a lot of references that people who have played the games and watched the shows would get, like Ditto having the dot eyes even after transforming. That was intentional. It's sad that all the reviewers aren't big Pokemon fans but it does say something about the movie being somewhat esoteric.
MLB is having a series in Iowa in honor of Field of Dreams. So please do an honest trailer for it. Another honorable Kevin Kostner mention is Dances with Wolves.
When the Japanese game first game out, Detective Pikachu's Japanese voice sounded somewhat DeVito-esque. It wasn't long before someone redubbed the trailer with Frank Reynolds quotes from It's Always Sunny every time Pikachu spoke. I know I've seen this and spent the past year scouring the internet for this video. My detective skills suck. The only bit I can remember clearly is Pikachu saying (in Frank's voice) "I've only got a few years of life left, I'm gonna get weird with it"
Can you say “Gee it’s swell to finally meet her Other Friends!”?
We can’t help how much we love Ryan Reynolds. We always want him. Always.
Last week Joe Starr made a "It's a living" joke and now this week Lon Harris made the same joke. Ya'll doing a Flinstone honest trailer?
The sequel was for the game, not the movie. In the game they don’t find the dad, so that’s why their making another game
I'd actually rank The Great Mouse Detective at #2 above Zootopia even. A Sherlock Holmes story with mice, Vincent Price, a Henry Mancini score, and one of the most intense Disney endings ever in the Big Ben clock tower? Love that movie!
While we hear Ryan renolds voice Tim is actually hearing Pikachu and his brain is translating it to English, plus as tim's father's partner Pikachu would have picked up alot of his tics and habits so you can't really say that those things should have giving it away
I would argue that since The Great Mouse Detective is based on Sherlock Holmes, it does not fall into the Hardboiled Detective genre, and therefore can be left off the list. The Hardboiled genre featured tough antiheroes like Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe who didn't necessarily rely on keen detection skills. These characters were in many ways a reaction against the typical Holmes-like detective. Therefore, The Great Mouse Detective can be left out of that list of four.
13:40 in an interview they said that movie was placeholder they got it off RUclips
Put his body in cryo freeze
If Pokemon takes place in the same universe as Home Alone, then it also shares the universe of 16 Candles, The Breakfast aclub, Ferris Bueller, She's Having a Baby, and Trains Planes and Automobiles.
400 million dollars is a big hit
And is confirmed to have more films
Do animated VGMs count
28:42 it’s social commentary for today’s society where people destroy or throw away perfectly good things
I'm guessing non of you people have had a rough childhood and had a parent walk out on you as a kid then. Easily enough to forget them (Or at least how they look or sound)
don't you watch your own things? he said himself to hal in a junket when he got the streamy award. "comon we have to do the honsest trailer for detectiv pikachu".....
The reason people wanted Danny DeVito as Detective Pikachu was because of a viral video where they inserted It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia audio from his character Frank Reynolds onto a fake fan trailer thing after the movies existence was announced. I'm surprised these guys didn't hear about this at all because they don't seem to know about it.
I don't know if I just don't have things loud enough, but I can never hear the construction or w.e whenever you guys mention it :') Loved the commentary and amazing trailer guys... the Pikachu in Reynolds bit got me hard :')
Ahem .... *clears throat* ... *wait for it*
*SHAZAM!*
if you think about the biggest achievement of this movie is that most people did not complaint about the movie and even enjoy a movie with pokemons.
People chose Danny DeVito as their dream casting for Detective Pikachu because the notion of a gruff-voice coming out of a cute Pikachu is so good. Also, in the original Japanese game, he does sound a lot like Danny DeVito. The game hadn’t even been released in America when they announced the movie. Which was weird.
I don't think Tim has talked to his dad since he was a little kid, it's not surprising he wouldn't remember what his dad sounds like and wouldn't know his dad's personality quirks.
I definitely tried to drunkenly find pokemon at 3am at one point.
Holy Moly... old batman from the 60s?? Awesome!! Sometimes you just can't get rid of a bomb.
Dan wanted "The Thin Poke' Line"
Angels With Dirty Faces is a 1938 James Cagney, Film-Noir
