The reason I don't think it's a good idea because banning things is usually bad policy. The tool itself isn't the problem. It's people who abuse the tool. In the process of banning tools they also have to create an allow-list of sorts and certification, and bureaucracies, and licenses... What's the return on that investment? You call it an experiment. Don't let them ban the Flipper. Sure it's not great in terms of ability compared to higher end devices as you said... but they ban the Flipper because its an easy target, use that precedence to ban other tools, eventually your tools get banned or require a license. Canada (I live here in Canada... sucks) wants things like "common sense hacker control" and the government might just be crazy enough to pull it off if they run out of tax payers to squeeze. "Common sense hacker control" would require a license to use our skills as electronics guys because I doubt they will stop at security related developers... not when they can require all programmers to be regulated and licensed both to control what and for whom we create, but also to squeeze our meager pay even more so they can use our money to go on luxury vacations on taxpayer money... Don't give them the Flipper or they'll take all the tools they can possibly get away with taking.

if someone can hack into a street light from a little device that looks like an ipod, then that's a failure on the DOT and the gov't rather than a flipper zero device problem you can hack into computers from a USB flash drive, should that mean flash drives should be banned? no. just because you can carry a kitchen knife in your pocked doesn't mean you should ban all kitchen knives. the flipper can also be used for convenient things like pretending to be an Amiibo or NFC card, or pretending to be a TV remote. what about people doing their jobs that happen to use the flipper for trivial easy things, like penetration testing into a facility. if someone of that background could just pop into your building with a hacking toy then that should be really effective marketing for your service.
When I first heard about the ban I thought it was dumb because flippers aren’t stealing cars ,but you helped me realize that the user base are skids that will just use it to open garage doors so there is no downside to it other than the gov banning one more thing😅
You present a false dichotomy: there are more than two groups affected by the ban. I know, I belong to neither of yours. Your motivation for banning the flipper is poor: misinformation misrepresents its capabilities to others. Perception that it is dangerous does not mean it is. Should the makers serve as a scapegoat and suffer as a result? The US has a poor track record with privacy: they banned anything stronger than 40-bit encryption for years. More recent evidence can be found with Snowden. What do you want with respect to open source? Regardless of the platform, you will *never* know that your code matches whats on the device. The idea that the creators are waiting for a hacker to 'unlock' the potential is silly.
>they banned anything stronger than 40-bit encryption for years Incorrect. Encryption stronger than that is considered a defense article, covered under the USML or the United Stated Munitions List, and is subject to that with regards to exportation. Those encryption standards are developed here and thus subject to those exportation standards. Also note that having a non-citizen even view the schematics for it is considered an export and not allowed without State Department approval. If you want a "traditional" munition to compare to, look at generation 3 (and above) night vision devices -- *looking through* a Gen3 or above NOD is considered an export as it gives firsthand knowledge as to how the device works, let alone looking at a wiring or materials schematic for that same phosphor device.
@damienblackburn5459 What is incorrect? In the past, one could not export 40-bit crypto: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40-bit_encryption The father of PGP knows full well it was regarded as a munition: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Zimmermann In his day, US citizens were meant to have 0-bit security: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip

I'm kinda split on this issue. The flipper is nothing special, just a fancy arduino with some peripherals and some easy to use firmware, and electronics hobbyist can easily cobble something similar together. Many of the issues being exploited with the flipper (not the fake videos) have been known for a _long_ time, and are generally considered common knowledge, yet nothing has changed in the past many years. While I don't like enabling script kiddies, it is probably one of the few ways to actually get the general public interested and generate some pressure to make safer systems
The only problem with the Flipper is that it is too expensive. They should be $20, then everyone will have one and stupidly insecure RF "things" will slowly and painfully disappear.

I have never owned a rubber ducky or one of those usb evil cables that can hack computers or even a FZ but i can use a pico pi to make the same stuff of the rubber ducky or the usb cable, the case of the FZ is simply get a ESP 32 and a couple of modules and you will get the same FZ functionality but as i said i have never owned one of any of those and i do not need them at all, I know how to make lock picks too and i know how to pick a lock but i don't want and don't need to. Tools are tools, man + knowledge = tools can be made when needed.
Code development on Flipper Zero seems too complicated to me, on the other hand something like M5stickC plus2 with additional radio modules, like Hc12, can do exactly the same, sometimes useful things, but with a much simpler development path. I'm a hobby programmer, maybe that's a problem, but it's easier for me to program something like esp32.

Banning it will just make it more popular with the script kiddies and company. Everyone and their dog will try and get their hands on more than one. Instead of banning, regulate who can import them and buy them. Restrict to unis, cybersec etc. Banning a digital tool like the flipper zero is akin to banning actual tools like spanners, screwdrivers, drills.
Ah man, I thought this video was gonna be about Canada banning house flipping, so they can stop talking about imposing capital gains on personal house sales.
Im not a computer guy so i couldn't use anything like this unless it was prepared with stock settings and was easy to use. I mean i miss using a cheap universal remote to jack with TV's 😅😂 or DTMF sounders to play with awnsering machine 😮.
Many of thr flipper videos out there are fake. Its a cool device to backup your remotes in your house and do some silly things with but its not that great of a hacking tool. It doesn't have many frequency and protocols required for most of the larger things to hack. Still has nothing for rolling codes. Its a cute remote toy but thats about it. Sure yoi can go to a bar and change the TV station or turn it off, but a universal remote can do the same thing. The coolest feature i have used it for was the scrippted USB keyboard where you plug it into a usb on a computer and it types out some predefined script but even that is pretty lame. Its closer to a toy for kids in school to show off they can do some silly things with than an actual hacking tool.

I disagree. There are many examples of such edicts. They're ineffective. They are easily circumvented. They are often widely ignored. The only good that can come of this is that someone will sell a lot more Flipper Zeros in Canada, at a premium.
First post-roll ad is for holidays in Canada
Don’t take your Flipper 🐬 😂
Regarding the flipper supposedly opening substation gates...
As I said before, regarding US extremists supposedly using them to attack substations as well, physical attacks will always be easier and simpler to perform. The avarage IQ of the kind of "person" who would attack infrastructure is low enough that they would rather use firearms or the humble bolt cutter to bypass the gates.
I see what you did there. Nice tongue-in-cheek explanation of the problems with censorship. As John Gilmore said in 1993, "The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it".
Here in Lake County California, Law Enforcement attempts to sell them online, Facebook, Ebay etc... Lowering the price often. .Similar to leaving a gun unattended, laying cash gold diamonds or drugs in the path of political enemies or...to tempt and bust a would be criminal.
Other more heinous ploys too... like human trafficking.
I'll agree, it's mainly a skiddie tool. I only really use mine because it's small, self contained, and has both IR and SubGHz radio, so I can just clone all the remotes in my house to it. I did see there are some interesting things to do with the GPIO, but you could probably do that all much cheaper with a Pi Pico.
Glad I got my flipper a while back, but lets bring out the pwnagatchis!
I need to order a bunch before they ban it .
As a canadian, the main reason I’m kind of sad they’re planning on banning the flipper is that it constitutes the cheapest way to have a tool to thinker with wireless tech for enthusiasts. If there are any alternatives that offer as much for the sane price point, plz to tell me
unexpectedly based af.
not sure who's worse now Canada, UK, or Australia. the crown
Speaking as an Australian, the government here would ban it but not be able to say why, nor give an example of what it could be used for beyond "potentially illegal behaviour."
In my country you need to give the seller of the flipper zero assurity that you won’t use it for bad things and some don’t even sell it to you unless you’re job requires the flipper zero
It’s just an excuse and reason to ban other less harmful things. If we can ban an electronic geek toy, we can ban anything! Go democracy!
Gotta love our sock boy. I am Canadian. :)
Articles that have the word “BAN” is the most successful sales promotion ad. From the Flipper to the AR-15
Yep. Ban means buy...
As a Canadian, with no intentions to do anything naughty, I'd like to have a Flipper to put a bunch of tap-capable cards on, like my transit pass or gym card. >~
Well yeah, Pavel *is* a marketing genius :)
_All the tools existed before the multi tool_ love it
New to the channel. I've only been subscribed for a week or so. So I wasn't sure which way you where going to go with this video. I'll just say, I'm glad I subscribed and I look forward to more videos. Thanks.
It’s a slight departure from my normal content, but the best part about Hacking and Reverse Engineering is testing ideas and seeing what happens. Same goes for RUclips videos.
I think id rather build my own anyways, cant ban cheep Chinese electronics.
Got your P.E. license? 😆 They can, but just like guns, it won't affect people with criminal intent.
@@topduk Im not an engineer, just a guy who likes computers, but I doubt they are gonna ban small wireless receivers and transmitters as well as Arduino and microcontrollers. At that point microwaves would probably be put up to ban cuz bad scary electronics.

The difference between humans and animals is animals would never let their dumbest lead the pack.
Banning the Flipper isn't going to do anything about 6 other cheaper items I have right beside me that are capable of doing the same. 😂
I've heard the ban would cover more than the flipper - HackRF and other SDRs would be included as well, but the media being the media doesn't tell that part of the story. Yes, there are other devices that do the same things, or more (or better), but they're not prepackaged for the script kiddies to play with easily. Like changing the traffic lights, there have been projects showing how to do that in magazines like Circuit Cellar since the 80's - none of this is anything new, it's just been all packaged together.
@@gorak9000 people will just make new products or make even more money selling Flippers. They're just creating a solution for a problem that doesn't exist rather than admit they're useless. The societal ignorance of technology really needs to be addressed. As more and more of life is tied into technology, automated or run by AI, denying people access to learning tools like the Flipper only increases the gap between the average person and hackers. They're creating a world where hackers will rule, politicians that don't know how to use their cellphones won't stand a chance. Just consider, the water in Pennsylvania was cut off because of the Israeli war. They're preparing the way for a technological butterfly effect that they can't even begin to understand, forget cope with.
if someone can hack into a street light from a little device that looks like an ipod, then that's a failure on the DOT and the gov't rather than a flipper zero device problem
you can hack into computers from a USB flash drive, should that mean flash drives should be banned? no. just because you can carry a kitchen knife in your pocked doesn't mean you should ban all kitchen knives. the flipper can also be used for convenient things like pretending to be an Amiibo or NFC card, or pretending to be a TV remote. what about people doing their jobs that happen to use the flipper for trivial easy things, like penetration testing into a facility. if someone of that background could just pop into your building with a hacking toy then that should be really effective marketing for your service.
Perception that it is dangerous
does not mean it is. Should the makers serve as a scapegoat and suffer as a result?
The US has a poor track record with privacy: they banned anything stronger than 40-bit encryption for years. More recent evidence can be found with
Snowden.
What do you want with respect to open source? Regardless of the platform, you will *never* know that your code matches whats on the device. The idea
that the creators are waiting for a hacker to 'unlock' the potential is silly.
>they banned anything stronger than 40-bit encryption for years
Incorrect.
@damienblackburn5459 What is incorrect?
In the past, one could not export 40-bit crypto:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40-bit_encryption
The father of PGP knows full well it was regarded as a munition:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Zimmermann
In his day, US citizens were meant to have 0-bit security:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip
@@jeancerrien3016 You said "they banned anything stronger than 40-bit encryption for years". Copy and paste. That statement, as it is, is patently false.

There are a few people who have started a diy flipper based around the esp32. As soon as something is banned, it will increase demand. Love the intro about the tie 🤣👍
Good Job!
Thank You :)
Flipper Zero banned -> Flipper Zero sold without Sub-GHz capability -> Flipper Zero reflashed
Nice work.
its so old, but even if they ban it most people dont buy it in canada.they get it on line and there is a version that look just like an mp3 player so unless you play with it you wouldnt know they banned tazers you can buy them on line under a different title easily
Love your videos and new format (compare to the earlier videos)
I'm from Canada and I think my kind of humor, doesn't surprise me they want to do this Trudeau is banning hate speech, it's speech that he hates not hate speech anything that isn't queer ,
so if all of these tools were available piror to this device , why does the flipper matter if 1000s of other devices are the exact same thing?
Makes the more accessible, is the reason he mentioned in the video.

Tools are tools, man + knowledge = tools can be made when needed.
didn't even hear that the flipper was banned in Canada, when did this happen?
Code development on Flipper Zero seems too complicated to me, on the other hand something like M5stickC plus2 with additional radio modules, like Hc12, can do exactly the same, sometimes useful things, but with a much simpler development path.
I'm a hobby programmer, maybe that's a problem, but it's easier for me to program something like esp32.
Bit too much Murca' in this one, they won't take away our xyz... What if someone with a lawful reason to have one wants one? Being in LE doesn't guarantee access to things on a naughty list. You're right this video will generate clicks and grumbles so I thought I'd get the ball rolling.
We'll put flags on them and call them Freedom Flippers! 😂 🇺🇲🇺🇲
I have a flipper but typically use it for pancakes and use real maple syrup on those - try reverse engineering some of that, eh.
Brazil is very much a dystopia now

Im not a computer guy so i couldn't use anything like this unless it was prepared with stock settings and was easy to use. I mean i miss using a cheap universal remote to jack with TV's 😅😂 or DTMF sounders to play with awnsering machine 😮.
Love this show! Thankz!
I bet if you search around you can find some rolling code stuff and other ways to “unlock” functionality.
To be banned again? I like the oscilloscope on the right - looks like a Siglent - but what is the book above it? Spectrum instruction manual?
nice logical take on the subject
I think they should ban recursive algorithms too. They are used for all kinds of stuff in movies :)
You have to be smart enough to learn how and what to use and when to use it in the first place..
you can buy everything you need and can do with a flipper.
