For the stacked chips, a solution is to check the integrity of the firmware against a checksum of the hardware fingerprint in combination with a random number generated internally at the date firmware was first run every time before the key is decrypted and before is used, is a stupid idea to keep the temporary decrypted key in an external RAM, as well a service can be created to verify the integrity of the firmware every second o so. How I proceed to encrypt the key? I never store the hash or the password, I store the key in an encrypted container with a checksum of the decrypted container, the hash is encrypted in the container but only the key is hashed, and check the password hash against the attempt of the decrypted container hash, if the decrypted container hash equals the password hash, the container is decrypted successfully and the key can be used, the container can contain more data or garbage to further complicate the things.
if only we were applying these techniques to something worthwhile, instead of burning energy, facilitating crime, and enriching already-wealthy people.

Running chips in parallel is not new, doing so for this purpose is fairly new, but doing this to expand the abilities of a device by running chips in parallel has been something I've seen done in the 80's to run multiple ROM's on home computers and I know of at least 1 home computer that used this method to switch in double the RAM (with a logic chip to switch the 2 banks).
Intel actually sold memory in DIP packages that stacked two up. They had one digit difference in the part number. They inverted one pin so when high you selected the upper and low - the lower. Then the dumping started and Intel pulled out of the DRAM market. Luckily IBM standardized on their processor or they may have been gone fairly quickly. They had started to lose the CPU market to Mostek, Zilog and Motorola.
My power company uses AI to determine what appliances are running. The results have not been spectacular. They have only identified one of my appliances and I'm not sure they got that correct. It took months and they never said they identified any of the other appliances they claimed to support.

The local power co engineers here were all about bragging about the smart meters but when I start asking about the encoding and guessing protocols going back down the lines that the rf analyzer I got could probably figure it out they get quiet and don't want to discuss it.

I am not yet sure if the meters call home down the power lines or if they send out a ping to them over time but I was always used to unplugging the meter when I worked on the panels.. well after the smart meters a truck showed up because my meter didn't respond and they thought the line was down. They put meter bases with disconnects in them for me so I don't need to do that but I was kinda surprised they knew and fairly quick. It's got to be all power line as there is no accompanying fiber line and lots of mountains so a lot of radio/cell signals don't go into some of the valleys. I have communication analyzer that could sniff it out and maybe even do something inductive like a cable tv experiment at a place one time that can pick up the signal without me sticking a probe directly to the line side.

If I ever get one of those habit-monitoring smart meters, I’m gonna install an enormous LC filter that blocks anything significantly above 50Hz. And add soft-start and PFC to every appliance I own. Wait maybe that’s the power companies’ goal all along…

the guy doesnt have 7k bitcoins. He never did. He just wanted some attention - get got called out and thats why he doesnt take the offer. Not a single person on the planet has that many bitcoins on some random hardware wallet - *especially* no software engineer. Software engineers use software. That easy.
It's not exactly new... Chinese cloners have been doing this chip swap trick on Cisco gear for over a decade. (the first read is the hash check. the second read is the decompress to memory. give hardware the real image for the first lookup, and then the hack afterwards. even switch back for the 3rd+ reads so the hack is invisible to the running system.)

I've done a similar trick a couple of times to rescue motherboards. So a BIOS flash goes wrong, remove the dead chip (they used to be socketed) and install a known good one from an identical mobo, boot it fully, remove the working chip, re-instal the dead one, and reflash it again.

Smart meters are fantastic, a whole new layer of intrusion and control that we used so think we didn't need! Also that lovely RF too, is that safe? Is it insurable? Why are we being nickel and dimed for our energy costs, while we wage war on most of the planet? And all that clever engineering time, that could have been spent in something useful. the power sensing thing is not new, the company was advertising clamp style units to install into your electrical box for the laast few years guess they couldn't get enough money that way and not they partners with the meter company to license it. gonna be easy to track the illegal grow ops and mining rigs in ri now ;), device profiling + remote disconnection or power shedding ?
There are ways to defend against this type of attack vector but hiring someone like me to defend against stuff like this isn't always an option for most people. Cool video and it makes you think. I might have to send you some suggestions for some future content if you're willing because this type of content is getting harder and harder to find nowadays especially for the good guys and I have a few topics I think might be right up your alley so to speak.
We've had a "smart meter" (dumb) now for ages, the only way to get any data out of it is to talk to the power company and request a dump from their website, not exactly the real time that I am after. So the tech is great, unlike the suits at the power company that won't hand out the keys.

If the contents of the NAND is encrypted and you switch in another NAND chip, would you not have to encrypt the contents of that NAND so that you could execute your own program?
Yea, if it’s encrypted things become harder. Not sure if any XiP (Execute in Place) processors support live decryption of their instructions. I would think if the memory’s encrypted it would be loaded to some internal RAM, decrypted and run from there. Haven’t researched it enough to say one way or the other though.
Yes. And it's even more complex because NAND isn't just a flat memory space. The NAND controller is doing error checking, bad block remapping, interleaving, etc, etc, etc. It's way accessing NAND directly is a mess -- i.e. you need special software. Switching NAND chips in a running system would just confuse the controller, even without encryption.
Dont need to slam more transistors into the current constraints, just sandwich them. There is at least one good idea that isnt nefarious: I could design a cpu socket that has 2 in one. So one half of the cpu pkg resides on either side of the motherboard. 3d printing might even advance enough to have coolant channels built in to the socket between each layer of the cpu to chipset to cpu. and ram on cpu could benefit alot to from the stacking idea too. I could see quantum processor makers actually steal this idea so at least I posted it here first, for the record lol Just need to make asyncronous operations more secure somehow but. 😂 yeah. I have a sort of decent idea to beam data across the gap when it could be necessary for crytographic needs. The beam is the most important bit though, because it would generate a key for each chip side with an encryption scheme based on a pretty cool anomaly I discovered in hexadecimal and punycode. Idk if its intended, but it is awesome.
Stacked chiplet designs are already a thing. Multi-socket motherboards are also already a thing (they generally go on the same side of the motherboard so that all of the sockets are on the same side with separate mounts for cooling. We're already putting everything on chiplets in the same package and calling it a SOC (CPU, RAM, SSD, GPU...), but I forget what it's called when it's just CPU and RAM. Usually if the extremely high bandwidth links on the motherboard are being tapped the attack surface is wide enough to make security extremely difficult. Anyway Secure Memory Encryption is already an extension on some x86-64 chips. You could have a secure element in the CPUs for dealing with the few extremely high security operations and design the rest of the system normally. DO NOT use bespoke encryption methods. A good cryptographic primitive needs years of mathematical analysis before we're comfortable saying that breaking it is hard enough to design systems around its properties. Do the cryptopals challenges if you want an introduction to how encryption is easy to do wrong.
The only "experience" I want from my power company is for them to deliver me the voltage and current they're supposed to. I can live with occasional outages. I don't need detailed information about each applicance!
They don't know _exactly_ what's what... they're guessing. For example, my "power summary report" shows a water heater... this house has had gas water heating since the day it was built 40+ years ago. (the current one is a forced induction model, it's electricity use is a rounding error.) It also shows HVAC usage in the summer, yet my A/C hasn't been turned on in 8 years!
This is the second comment I’ve seen mentioning a UPS. I have my doubts though. My understanding of most consumer UPS are they just monitor the power line and switch to battery if they sense a power drop. They aren’t acting as a big capacitor bank smoothing out power draw.

my first thought also, I did my 520ST Developer beta model, and my computer teachers 520, 512 ?M/k? of ram chips cost over $300 then in the mid80's.. the school had a single10 Meg hard drive for a apple II.....

You could do that to the original Xbox too, could double its RAM to 128MB just by stacking chips :) Saw someone upgrade a Voodoo 1 card the same way, piggybacking chips to give it 8MB video memory.

@@piman13_71 That's not how these things work. It can only report total service usage. They DO NOT know exactly what is using that power. However, they can guess. For some loads - like an electric dryer - that's instant huge load, and it cycles at a predictable rate. Your oven and stove are also high current devices, but they don't cycle like a dryer. It's not like they can tell every time you open the fridge door. (because the light comes on.) An EV charging is also an obvious load. (but some put those on their own meter.)

Yet 50 years ago, that stopped. Why? Because there was an element of Trust involved; trust that the USA government actually had as much gold as it was creating promises (money) to redeem for it. They lied. They were printing way more and then decided to abandon it all together. With Bitcoin, there is no Trust required. It has an open ledger that you can VERIFY who has how much. Also, nobody controls it. It operates in a decentralised manner that can’t be stopped. Can’t be hacked. And your Bitcoin can never be taken from you, if you do the right thing to secure it. Gold on the other hand, can be stolen. You can’t easily carry it around. It’s not easily divisible. And it’s expensive to transport it safely. Bitcoin fixes all of this. We are in a digital age. Bitcoin has a programmatic finite supply and thus is not inflationary. It has value, just like anything else, because the market sees value in its capability and it takes a lot of power to produce and secure it. But again, don’t trust me to tell you all there is; verify it yourself. Do a small amount of research. Read “The Bitcoin Standard” which does a great job of explaining it and the benefits. @@MarkOfBitcoin My main issue with Bitcoin is the "...market sees value in it..." vs intrinsic value. The limited supply of it seems more like the great justifier of its value than a real property. Gold has physical properties that give it value along with the limited supply. Bitcoin's value is in circumventing government controls, which can be "fixed" in the future reducing its value. As a system to enable transferring wealth without government control it's great. Assuming you can turn that Bitcoin back into something spendable in your own country to get food and pay rent. It's created a ransomware market where one was impossible before, but what else? It's too unpredictable as a currency, so the bubble seems to have burst there. Other than ransomware and people who hoped to get rich quick with their stimulus checks, who else is pumping it and benefiting?

Absolutely everything has a perceived upper value that people are willing to pay for. Is a house on the beach really intrinsically worth $20 million in materials to build it, or is it because land by the sea is scarce and therefore the market sees a higher value in it? However, Bitcoin is not made out of thin air. It is in fact generated (and secured) by using a lot of energy. Energy that the providers of that securing and work are rewarded in Bitcoin for doing that work. So there is in fact some intrinsic value to it, basically being "digital energy". Bitcoin in itself doesn't circumvent government controls. In fact, it has been deemed by the government to be a commodity, much like oil and gas are commodities. And if you buy some of those commodities and then sell them for a profit, you are expected to pay taxes on it, just as you do with Bitcoin. Now you can do various nefarious things with Bitcoin, but those same thing, IN GREATER NUMBERS, are done with your supposedly "angelic" fiat dollar. How many times do you get robo-called on the phone to tell you of a charge from Amazon to your credit card and if you don't want that, then hold the line? Those people don't try those scams if they don't work... And poor grandma hands over her credit card which has nothing to do with Bitcoin. Now, you may like having your funds being controlled by the government (just like the Canadian Truckers, yeah?) but others feel that it is THEIR money and the government should NOT be able to stop you donating it to a cause that does not fit their narrative. That is why Bitcoin is often referred to as "Freedom Money". As to using Bitcoin for groceries... Take a look at what is slowly happening in El Salvador and a few other cities around the world. Yes, you CAN buy goods and services with your Bitcoin. In El Salvador, it is legal tender so you can even pay your taxes in Bitcoin. And they won't be the last country to adopt it that way. Lastly, you asked who else is pumping the price? Blackrock, the worlds largest investor, will be. In case you didn't hear, they applied to have a spot Bitcoin ETF. So all the hedge funds, and pension funds and investment brokers will soon have a very easy way to invest into Bitcoin by simply buying a share on the stock market. For each share they sell, they need to buy a Bitcoin to back that share. Do you really think it's a bad investment when the likes of Blackrock think it is a good one? Happy to answer any more questions but I am certainly no expert. Look up Michael Saylor (of Micro Strategy) and how much he has invested his company's future on Bitcoin. Why would he do that if he didn't think it was "perfect money".

Using it, you can transfer value anywhere in the world at any time of day, without the need for approval or intermediaries. It can’t be devalued or confiscated and runs on the most secure network known to mankind. Government printed toilet paper money is used as payment for most of the criminal activity due to its untraceable nature. Gold markets are so highly manipulated that they have not even kept up with inflation over the past few decades, and gold’s scarcity is under threat now as NASA and other space companies talk about mining billions of tons of gold on asteroids. And to correct your highly inaccurate view on what Bitcoin is actually used for, less than 1% of Bitcoin transactions are actually the result of any sort of criminal activities. A far cry less than actual cash being used for crimes. And no, it is not possible for any government to “fix” Bitcoin or change the way its network works. I suggest you read up about decentralised systems and how they work. It is not possible to modify the network without the consensus of the majority of participants.

Its also used on custom snes roms. It acts like a translator mask.

Thanks Hash, really interesting stuff, that stacking chip thing was interesting, I've seen the technique used for drivers to increase power handling capacity, never thought about using it to switch in and out executing code, that was just plain clever. It's not exactly new... Chinese cloners have been doing this chip swap trick on Cisco gear for over a decade. (the first read is the hash check. the second read is the decompress to memory. give hardware the real image for the first lookup, and then the hack afterwards. even switch back for the 3rd+ reads so the hack is invisible to the running system.)

I've done a similar trick a couple of times to rescue motherboards.
So a BIOS flash goes wrong, remove the dead chip (they used to be socketed) and install a known good one from an identical mobo, boot it fully, remove the working chip, re-instal the dead one, and reflash it again.

Smart meters are fantastic, a whole new layer of intrusion and control that we used so think we didn't need! Also that lovely RF too, is that safe? Is it insurable?

the power sensing thing is not new, the company was advertising clamp style units to install into your electrical box for the laast few years

There are ways to defend against this type of attack vector but hiring someone like me to defend against stuff like this isn't always an option for most people. Cool video and it makes you think. We've had a "smart meter" (dumb) now for ages, the only way to get any data out of it is to talk to the power company and request a dump from their website, not exactly the real time that I am after.
So the tech is great, unlike the suits at the power company that won't hand out the keys.

Yea, if it’s encrypted things become harder. Not sure if any XiP (Execute in Place) processors support live decryption of their instructions. I would think if the memory’s encrypted it would be loaded to some internal RAM, decrypted and run from there. Haven’t researched it enough to say one way or the other though.
Yes. And it's even more complex because NAND isn't just a flat memory space. The NAND controller is doing error checking, bad block remapping, interleaving, etc, etc, etc. It's way accessing NAND directly is a mess -- i.e. you need special software. Switching NAND chips in a running system would just confuse the controller, even without encryption.

Dont need to slam more transistors into the current constraints, just sandwich them. There is at least one good idea that isnt nefarious:
I could design a cpu socket that has 2 in one. So one half of the cpu pkg resides on either side of the motherboard. 3d printing might even advance enough to have coolant channels built in to the socket between each layer of the cpu to chipset to cpu. and ram on cpu could benefit alot to from the stacking idea too. I could see quantum processor makers actually steal this idea so at least I posted it here first, for the record lol
Just need to make asyncronous operations more secure somehow but. 😂 yeah. I have a sort of decent idea to beam data across the gap when it could be necessary for crytographic needs. The beam is the most important bit though, because it would generate a key for each chip side with an encryption scheme based on a pretty cool anomaly I discovered in hexadecimal and punycode. Idk if its intended, but it is awesome.
Stacked chiplet designs are already a thing. Multi-socket motherboards are also already a thing (they generally go on the same side of the motherboard so that all of the sockets are on the same side with separate mounts for cooling. We're already putting everything on chiplets in the same package and calling it a SOC (CPU, RAM, SSD, GPU...), but I forget what it's called when it's just CPU and RAM.
Usually if the extremely high bandwidth links on the motherboard are being tapped the attack surface is wide enough to make security extremely difficult. Anyway Secure Memory Encryption is already an extension on some x86-64 chips. You could have a secure element in the CPUs for dealing with the few extremely high security operations and design the rest of the system normally.
DO NOT use bespoke encryption methods. A good cryptographic primitive needs years of mathematical analysis before we're comfortable saying that breaking it is hard enough to design systems around its properties. Do the cryptopals challenges if you want an introduction to how encryption is easy to do wrong.
The only "experience" I want from my power company is for them to deliver me the voltage and current they're supposed to. I can live with occasional outages. I don't need detailed information about each applicance!
They don't know _exactly_ what's what... they're guessing. For example, my "power summary report" shows a water heater... this house has had gas water heating since the day it was built 40+ years ago. (the current one is a forced induction model, it's electricity use is a rounding error.) It also shows HVAC usage in the summer, yet my A/C hasn't been turned on in 8 years!

This is the second comment I’ve seen mentioning a UPS. I have my doubts though. My understanding of most consumer UPS are they just monitor the power line and switch to battery if they sense a power drop. They aren’t acting as a big capacitor bank smoothing out power draw.

my first thought also, I did my 520ST Developer beta model, and my computer teachers 520, 512 ?M/k? of ram chips cost over $300 then in the mid80's.. the school had a single10 Meg hard drive for a apple II.....

You could do that to the original Xbox too, could double its RAM to 128MB just by stacking chips :)
Saw someone upgrade a Voodoo 1 card the same way, piggybacking chips to give it 8MB video memory.

@@piman13_71 That's not how these things work. It can only report total service usage. They DO NOT know exactly what is using that power. However, they can guess. For some loads - like an electric dryer - that's instant huge load, and it cycles at a predictable rate. Your oven and stove are also high current devices, but they don't cycle like a dryer. It's not like they can tell every time you open the fridge door. (because the light comes on.) An EV charging is also an obvious load. (but some put those on their own meter.)

@@RECESSIM ok, good reply. At least you show you’re understanding the Fiat system has problems. And gold has been great for many thousands of years. And the USA *was* on a gold standard, twice! Yet 50 years ago, that stopped. Why? Because there was an element of Trust involved; trust that the USA government actually had as much gold as it was creating promises (money) to redeem for it. They lied. They were printing way more and then decided to abandon it all together.
With Bitcoin, there is no Trust required. It has an open ledger that you can VERIFY who has how much. Also, nobody controls it. It operates in a decentralised manner that can’t be stopped. Can’t be hacked. And your Bitcoin can never be taken from you, if you do the right thing to secure it.
Gold on the other hand, can be stolen. You can’t easily carry it around. It’s not easily divisible. And it’s expensive to transport it safely. Bitcoin fixes all of this.
We are in a digital age. Bitcoin has a programmatic finite supply and thus is not inflationary. It has value, just like anything else, because the market sees value in its capability and it takes a lot of power to produce and secure it.
But again, don’t trust me to tell you all there is; verify it yourself. Do a small amount of research. Read “The Bitcoin Standard” which does a great job of explaining it and the benefits.

@@MarkOfBitcoin My main issue with Bitcoin is the "...market sees value in it..." vs intrinsic value. The limited supply of it seems more like the great justifier of its value than a real property. Gold has physical properties that give it value along with the limited supply. Bitcoin's value is in circumventing government controls, which can be "fixed" in the future reducing its value.
As a system to enable transferring wealth without government control it's great. Assuming you can turn that Bitcoin back into something spendable in your own country to get food and pay rent. It's created a ransomware market where one was impossible before, but what else? It's too unpredictable as a currency, so the bubble seems to have burst there.
Other than ransomware and people who hoped to get rich quick with their stimulus checks, who else is pumping it and benefiting?
@@RECESSIM once again, thanks for your considered reply. It isn't just that the "market sees value" although that really is how the economy works. Absolutely everything has a perceived upper value that people are willing to pay for. Is a house on the beach really intrinsically worth $20 million in materials to build it, or is it because land by the sea is scarce and therefore the market sees a higher value in it? However, Bitcoin is not made out of thin air. It is in fact generated (and secured) by using a lot of energy. Energy that the providers of that securing and work are rewarded in Bitcoin for doing that work. So there is in fact some intrinsic value to it, basically being "digital energy".
Bitcoin in itself doesn't circumvent government controls. In fact, it has been deemed by the government to be a commodity, much like oil and gas are commodities. And if you buy some of those commodities and then sell them for a profit, you are expected to pay taxes on it, just as you do with Bitcoin. Now you can do various nefarious things with Bitcoin, but those same thing, IN GREATER NUMBERS, are done with your supposedly "angelic" fiat dollar. How many times do you get robo-called on the phone to tell you of a charge from Amazon to your credit card and if you don't want that, then hold the line? Those people don't try those scams if they don't work... And poor grandma hands over her credit card which has nothing to do with Bitcoin.
Now, you may like having your funds being controlled by the government (just like the Canadian Truckers, yeah?) but others feel that it is THEIR money and the government should NOT be able to stop you donating it to a cause that does not fit their narrative. That is why Bitcoin is often referred to as "Freedom Money".
As to using Bitcoin for groceries... Take a look at what is slowly happening in El Salvador and a few other cities around the world. Yes, you CAN buy goods and services with your Bitcoin. In El Salvador, it is legal tender so you can even pay your taxes in Bitcoin. And they won't be the last country to adopt it that way.
Lastly, you asked who else is pumping the price? Blackrock, the worlds largest investor, will be. In case you didn't hear, they applied to have a spot Bitcoin ETF. So all the hedge funds, and pension funds and investment brokers will soon have a very easy way to invest into Bitcoin by simply buying a share on the stock market. For each share they sell, they need to buy a Bitcoin to back that share. Do you really think it's a bad investment when the likes of Blackrock think it is a good one?
Happy to answer any more questions but I am certainly no expert. Look up Michael Saylor (of Micro Strategy) and how much he has invested his company's future on Bitcoin. Why would he do that if he didn't think it was "perfect money".
@@RECESSIM You have no idea what you are talking about. The fact that Bitcoin is used for ransomware actually proves it is fit for purpose! Using it, you can transfer value anywhere in the world at any time of day, without the need for approval or intermediaries. It can’t be devalued or confiscated and runs on the most secure network known to mankind. Government printed toilet paper money is used as payment for most of the criminal activity due to its untraceable nature. Gold markets are so highly manipulated that they have not even kept up with inflation over the past few decades, and gold’s scarcity is under threat now as NASA and other space companies talk about mining billions of tons of gold on asteroids.
And to correct your highly inaccurate view on what Bitcoin is actually used for, less than 1% of Bitcoin transactions are actually the result of any sort of criminal activities. A far cry less than actual cash being used for crimes. And no, it is not possible for any government to “fix” Bitcoin or change the way its network works. I suggest you read up about decentralised systems and how they work. It is not possible to modify the network without the consensus of the majority of participants.
