Are you familiar with the dual display lag some are experiencing with dual 4k monitors?
    Will this fix that?

The thunderbolt 5 standard is announced but not out yet. And I’m familiar with problems with 4K monitors freezing on macs and having hiccups. I’m not aware of the problem on pc. But Mac’s play best with 2,5k or 5k and for a totally seamless experience the Mac screens or of brand screens that have been sold on apple’s site are the ones to get. I use thunderbolt displays and the have flawless compatibility

And for most thunderbolt 5 is not worth the investment for many years 😉

      @@OldGuyNewTech I have LG ultrafine 4k ergo IPS 32un880-b
Two of them as I am visually impaired and need the size to see properly

@@AngeliqueStidhum but if you are a Mac user you have the answer to your problem. Apple doesn’t always play seamless with all monitors and studio displays are expensive. But TB 5 probably won’t fix that issue sorry.

You can run two Studio Displays with one Thunderbolt 4 cable, you just need a Thunderbolt 4 hub. Unlike the LG UltraFine 5K, the Studio Display only requires one DP 1.4 stream and supports compression. Thunderbolt 3/4 supports two DP 1.4 streams over one cable.

Its not true 5k 60hz then but your right its possible. But not an optimal in my opinion. But i had 2 studio displays i would probably do this for the convenience of connecting my Mac with one cable 😉 but if i had the money for 2 studio displays i could afford the upgrade to thunderbolt 5 to. But it’s not worth it for me and 95% of others to✌🏽

And I gonna stick to the cheaper Thunderbolt Displays and my current thunderbolt 4 Mac for the next many years. That was the takeaway I wanted to state. It’s expensive to get the newest tech and seldom needed😉

@@OldGuyNewTech It is true 5K 60Hz. It requires 26 Gb/s uncompressed, if it's compressed down to 20 Gb/s I don't think it will lose any quality.

@@null-nl5su again if i had 2 studio displays i would go with the one cable solution you presented here living with the minimal compression and allowing me to hook up my Mac with one cable😉 thanks again for your inputs they ad in a positive way to the topic. Cheers

  • @null-nl5su

You can actually run two 4K displays at 240 Hz and 30 bits per pixel uncompressed, because Thunderbolt 5 supports 120 Gb/s in one direction.

    • @OldGuyNewTech
      @OldGuyNewTech  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah it supports 3 4K 144hz screens😉

Also you won't have to buy a new PC to get Thunderbolt 5, you can just buy a Thunderbolt 5 add-in card.

wait, what? u cant use usb 3.1 stuff with thunderbolt 3? and no usb c at all with the 2m cables?
of course, just when i thought I had a grasp of all this nonsense another wrench gets thrown in.

    • @OldGuyNewTech

Thanks for commenting. I must admit I only have 80cm cables as the 2m cables are so expensive. But 2 meter cables only supply 20 Gbps in thunderbolt 3. You need 4 for the full 40gbps. Active cables can run a lot longer, but due to their construction, they can also cost a lot more to acquire. Also, especially in the case of active Thunderbolt 3 cables, not all of them supported USB, so be aware that the support for the other standards may not necessarily be present. So it depends on the cable. So you should be able to find a 2m cable that can run usb up to 10gpbs. I would buy a thunderbolt 4 cable if you invest in a new one. They are backward compatible and make you more future prof. Hope this helps. Cheers the old guy
