- In this video I show you how to take an old wicker Peacock Chair that's in bad shape and fix and repair it to bring it back to life!
Products that I used:
Sunnyside Boiled Linseed Oil
Zinsser Bulls Eye Seal Coat
Minwax Fast Drying Polyurethane in Clear Satin
When I was young in the 70’s, these chairs were “a dime a dozen”… almost everyone I knew had one, or similar to it. I can’t believe how much they are asking for them brand new 😳 Back then.. Pier 1 was a pretty “reasonable” store, believe it or not, cuz now they are pretty expensive. They carried these chairs, along with incense, beads… great memories of all the hippie stuff we 🥰 loved.. Beautiful job 👍
Thanks :)
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS POST!! 👏🏆
I just inherited my grandmother’s peacock chair and stool that my dad gave her in the early 70’s. I have literally been obsessed with this chair my entire life and cannot wait to restore this and bring back its former glory 🤗
You're so welcome! I hope it's helpful in your restoring process :)
Beautiful job. I have large high back wicker chair built like a tank, and will be refurbishing it soon. Thank-you.
Awesome job! loved to see the transformation. I can't believe you got so much colour back. Looks brand new again!
Like your video, thank you for actually talking into the camera and not endlessly fiddling with your hair, to of my pet peeves with other you tubers. I think the chair came up fabulous you did a great job and it was such a great score at only $30. I’ll be watching out for more videos from your channel now that I’m subscribed ❤❤❤❤ good luck 😊
Thanks so much, I'm glad you liked the video and it was helpful!
Amazing job Michelle! You transformed this chair beautifully 💖😍
I got one for $40 in even poorer condition (reed damage, lacks some structural integrity). I came to a standstill, so this was so helpful!! Thank ✌️
A $40 peacock chair is definitely a bargain! I hope this video has helped inspire you to keep going with your repairs!
Excellent work restoring the beautiful peacock chair. All of those steps seem to be correct. I hope you kept it! 😊
Thanks! I definitely put in some time and effort but I love how it turned out :)
That's a great peacock chair transformation!
You did such a great job!
I got two of that same EXACT peacock chair also from Facebook marketplace for $150 total. 🤯 They currently look exactly as yours first did- all grayed. Thank you so much for posting the video so now I can see the full potential of what they can be!
Thanks! That sounds like an awesome deal you got on Facebook marketplace for your pair of peacock chairs!
Looks awesome Michelle!! So much colour was brought back 😍 great job 👏🏼
I’ve got a double peacock bed head that needs some TLC. Thanks for the tips
Great channel…new subscriber 💜
Welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
Looks great! I don’t think I would use polyurethane on it though. That will crack and chip off incompletely in time. You won’t be able to remove it. Instead I would use Tung Oil. It will harden and get semi-shiny with 2 coats. It won’t dry out and chip off in 20 years. You got a great chair! They used to be really inexpensive at Pier 1. They often looked a little dried out. Yours is better!
Going to try it today. Thank you.
Good luck! hope it turns out great for you!
Wow!! what a huge difference! I loved what you did with the chair and I learn't a lot, can't wait to see your other projects.
Beautiful work! Can't wait for the next video ☺️
You've earned this sub I love diy stuff incredible we bought ours today for 15$ sight unseen but the back support is broken in a ton of places so I'm trying to figure out how to save it
Thanks! Good luck on restoring your peacock chair - I'm sure you'll do a great job saving it!
@@diylifewithmichelle5450 thanks so much 😀 we shall see lol
Great job!!!! Thanks for sharing 😊
Hi there.. Great video! BTW what was the interval between applying the seal coat and polyurethane spray? How long you waited out?
I waited about a week. You probably don't need to actually wait that long, it was just that it was a week later when I was able to set aside some time to do it!
I would say for $30 you got a bargain. You've done a beautiful restoration job and it obvious the chair has found a good home. I remember in the '70's you could pick up a chair like this at Cost Plus for a reasonable price--because they bought in bulk, it kept shipping costs down. Have any of your friends been calling you "Morticia?"
The chair turned out to be gorgeous. Just as a technical note on your video though - I had to turn the sound as loud as it would go to hear you. THEN when the music came on I had to turn it down immediately! Maybe there is a microphone you could wear?
Thanks for the feedback!
I love 💕 it.
How much would you sell this for after all that work you did. ?
Watching from Kentucky “ The Bluegrass State “ ,.. great Job.
Thanks for the info and Video 😊
It depends on what platform you decide to sell it on and where you live. For example, in my local marketplace, if I sold it on Facebook Marketplace, I could sell this for around $500-$600. I actually sold this on Etsy, and offered shipping, which allowed me to sell it for $1400. From this I had to take out the cost of the peacock chair and the materials to repair it ($90), the cost of shipping ($380) and Etsy fees ($116). It still gave me a profit of $814 though (as opposed to the approx $500 profit I would have made if I sold it locally - which would still have been awesome!), so I think it was totally worth it.
Great job! It looks great ❤
Thank you! 😊
Amazing work, it looks fantastic! Can’t wait to see the next projects!
Can I just apply linseed oil or are the additional steps required?
Absolutely AWESOME!!!
Thanks! I'm so happy it was helpful!
Thankyou for sharing.
You're welcome! Hope it was helpful :)
How did you repair the actual seat area. You don’t explain that part. I only see you preserving the wood with stain and sealants.
I'm assuming you're referring to the front part of the seat that had the wonky trim? If so, that was held in place by small nails. I took out the nails holding it in place, repositioned it so it was straight, and put the nails back in.
❤
Awesome! Did you end up selling this piece?
I hung on to this piece for a long time - it was just so beautiful! In the end, I did end up listing and selling it. It went to a new home where it will be used by a photographer in their shoots.
Turnout great 🤩
How long did it have a chemical smell?
It only had a chemical smell briefly after I applied the Seal Coat, but once the Polyurethane was applied and had dried, it didn't seem to have a smell. I was also doing everything outside, and had it stored in my garage for a couple of days after I applied the Polyurethane, so that may have given it time to air out, if there was a slight smell afterwards. Hope this helps!
What was the video you said to watch that helped you?
Seconded - would like to know this too
Here's the link to the video that helped me :)

Anyone know how I would clean wicker and then paint it? I have a small couch that was left outside that I want to put flower pots on. ☺️
Was that all dirt or some white paint?
It was mainly dirt as it had been sitting outside for a while (it hadn't been painted and still had the beautiful natural colored wicker under all that grime).
Any suggestions to clean the chair if you do not have a lower washer
Hmm... that's a good question. The power washer gave me really good results because of the pressure of the water, so I'm not sure that you'd get the same results using different methods. You could try washing it down with something like Dawn dish soap and hot water with a scrubbing brush, but you'd be walking a fine line between getting off the dirt and not wrecking the wicker. Otherwise, I know that at a lot of hardware stores you can rent power washers - that might be an option.
❤❤❤
Don’t spray on windy days..the chair is fantastic
Hard to hear
Can't hear over the annoying music.
Amazing job Michelle! You transformed this chair beautifully 💖😍
