If you CAN keep the 4.2 ( I assume you're swapping out a motor with a working bottom end and doenst have a hole in the block), and want a little more power. You can keep it simple with taking your head to a machine shop and getting a good 5 angle valve job, new springs, a new cam, and a well sorted exhaust, should liven the 4.2 up pretty nicely. If you splurge a little and get a trick EFI system you can run different tunes to liven it up pretty nicely over the stock Carb as well..... A V8 swap though cool is alotta headache and in my own opinion is more for show than actual work. Plus you aren't gonna have to hassle with getting a bellhousing adapter and cutting up your front suspension...... and with the money you can save over doing a motor swap you can reinvest that into your suspension (stronger axles, 44's front and rear, lockers, even bigger tires if you need them)..... Just my two sense from a guy who likes motors on RUclips
I had the 360 in my 1998 ZJ (lx) , they eat water pumps for some reason. In any case, they are cheap because aftermarket parts and cost are much higher vs any 305 or LS swap.
We have a shop here in Michigan at does work on all Jeeps well as straight from the factory floor 318 conversions on the 2019 Jeep's that are quite a site to behold. They also do plenty of R&D work directly with FCA's Jeep engineers and had a "pilot" Jeep in their shop about a year back doing their 1st 318 conversion not only for future product, but also for one of the Jeep execs. Wasn't a fan of the new Jeep until one of their techs spent an hour of his free time going through the whole thing with me. After that have to confess that it's quite nicely engineered and set up quite nicely to support all the aftermarket sellers.
Keep the six cylinder with carburetor but covert it to propane. Then you can run it at just about any angle you want. Proper axle gearing is probably more important than the power plant. I’m still running the 2.5 with stock 4.10 gears and 35s. Soon I’ll be regearing to 4.56. (Dana 44 front and Ford 8.8 rear)
You said that he would need to cut out all of the factory mounts to make it leaf spring. All YJ wranglers were leaf spring front and rear. Wranglers didn't get coil spring suspension until the TJ came out. To all of the people that are complaining about him wanting to use a 305, there is nothing wrong with them. There is a good reason that GM kept producing the 305 instead of the 327, 307, and so on. 350s are no real power houses until you dump alot of money into them.
Scott Garboden They were talking about swapping in an XJ front end, which is coil sprung. They were wrong to begin with though, as the YJ should have a high pinion axle like the XJ.
I love Jeep YJ's. Mine is nearly finished... (finally) 1991 YJ 4.0L AX15. It had the high pinion Dana-30 in the front, but I swapped in a Dana-30 without the CAD from a '98 XJ. I also swapped an XJ Dana-44 in the rear. In the past I had considered swapping in the crappy 305 (w/Quadrajet carb) from my crappier '87 Camaro, then changed my mind and planned to swap the 3.9L 4BD1T diesel from my old Isuzu NPR. Even considered swapping in the little 1.9L ALH diesel I have sitting in the shed. But I just like the 4.0L too much so it is staying.
harry walker an all stroke and no bore motor makes low down torque. And a similar displacement v8 compared to a v6 will make more torque and power every day.
Did a 302 and a T18 into my cousin's for him. Just took a motor mount kit welded in, and a t18 adapted to his 231 via a Novak kit and replacement output shaft. Custom driveshafts from a little shop. Worst part was getting a hydraulic slave cylinder setup. Basically chopped the factory master cylinder out and put in a Ford one on the firewall. Weird P/N for the bellhousing we had (which came off a 78 F250 camper special with a manual clutch) to make it work but it's fine now. Still has the 35/30 combo open/open waiting to grenade, but he doesn't offroad, it's just an around-town ride for him. Bottom line, if you're at all mechanically competent, figure out what you have first and then what you need to do to adapt it. We had the T18 first, and then pieced together three junkyard 302s. Has the heads, intake, and exhaust from a mustang, the block and rotating assembly from a crown vic (reringed, all new bearings, dingleball honed), and the accessories from an f150. Basically grabbed three motors on the cheap from my buddies at the local junkyard, and picked what was best out of all of them to make one.
I installed a 305 out of a 77 Nova in my 89 YJ over 20 years ago and it's been a daily driver ever since. I had the first the advanced adapters kit in the torque flight 999. However, the crank twisted the center out of the flywheel one day so I installed a turbo 350 trans. Other than the fuel economy everything's been fine.
Why not swap in a 4.0 HO from a 91+ XJ? Bolts right up, motor mounts fit, everything fits (even the exhaust!) and you get 197 HP. Of course you'll have a lot of wiring harness work instead though, but most of it should be transferable from the XJ.
AX15 would be okay, none of the other YJ transmissions would be remotely strong enough. For the price of the adapter to run the AX15 though, he could get a T18 or SM465 and have a much beefier transmission at the cost of losing overdrive. Once you've got big tires though, 4th gear starts to feel a lot like 5th does stock, and with the granny gear you could avoid regearing. That's my plan with my V8 swap, already have my drivetrain. I do have to wonder what the point of swapping in a 305 is, given it makes about the same power as a 4.2. I think it'd be a waste unless you just wanted the V8 sound. You guys touched on that too though. Of course I can't say too much, I plan on swapping an AMC 360 into mine. Additionally, as far as axles, he has a high pinion D30 and a D35. They didn't use a low pinion in a YJ. He can do the Ford 8.8, it's literally almost bolt in, and keep the HP D30 and he'll be good for 35s and potentially 37s. The 8.8 can even usually be found in matching ratio and with a limited slip. The 8.8 is far and away the best swap into anything 5 lug and small truck width, and can easily handle the power of a 305 and more.
I have a decision to make about my M-715 project, has the idea of using the military AMG 242 Transfer case. Not building a rock crawler, tho I think that case would take it.
A well build 305 can be a GREAT option but the internet experts will never accept it, I just build one on my 81 c10, 15 mpg, makes great burnouts and I already have smoked a couple of 350 c10s
Dave, you're the unsung hero of dirt everyday. But you're awkward. Awkward, awkward, awkward. You know your shit and you're awesome. Fred, appreciate Dave.
A 305, in modern times, would never be worth it. Hell, 305's sucked back in the day. I can't believe anyone even remembers those damned things, let alone would want to put one in a YJ as an expensive and time-consuming project.
Harry Balzack if he already has it, it would be cheaper than an LS for sure. If he has a donor vehicle it could be even cheaper. But a 350 is so much better
Dave was also talking about going to a carb or aftermarket FI, the 90 YJ was still carb from the factory so what's the difference. 91 was 1st year for FI on the 4.2.
305 Chevy swap is about the best. Even though the 4.0 has the same horsepower and way lighter. A 4bt Cummins is super heavy and maybe 360s are common where you are but not where I am. There is a SBC swap for literally everything. And 305 won’t tear the jeep apart due to their awful frames
Did he ask what motor to buy? Did he say he was buying a motor? So what dose buy this motor it's better have to do with it? You want the motor, you buy it.
Why get only marginally better power out of the 305? Just bore out and stroke the 4.2 liter inline 6. Great torque, stock, no carb, and much more power
So I've been wanting to put the Mopar fuel injection on my CJ8! WHERE CAN I FIND THAT KIT?? seems like it vanished off the Aftermarket or something! PLEASE let me know! Thanks!
Steve, you can run the 350, but would look for an LS engine over the Gen II SBC. If you just plan to tow, I would find a Cummins 4BT or 6BT. Even a Detroit Diesel 6.2 or 6.5, they are stupid cheap. The 454 is a bad idea.
The old school 350 can make decent power. But the diesel swap would be best for towing and truck pulls. 454 terrible idea. Newer LS is better than a big block.
Do you know how heavy a 4bt is? A 305 won’t tear it apart. And there is a Chevy sbc for literally everything. And 305 is one of the most common engines.
So swamped a 88 Cherokees engine into my 92 yj and now can’t get it to start I used all the yj parts onto the Cherokees engine except for the flywheel witch I left from the Cherokee any thoughts on what’s going on with that?
The transmission final drive ratio and the differential ratio determine how fast a vehicle will go. Not the size of the engine. I see morons on jeep websites who want to put disc brakes on an old Willys 2A or 3A!?! Why? Your top speed is 40 mph. Why do you need disc brakes?
Say that to someone with a built 334. Then imagine off-roading a Jeep with a built 334 under the hood. Easy 400 foot pounds, solid lowend torque and better fuel economy than a 350 would make it an ideal candidate for a little Jeep.
Stock 305 still uses a 350 crank, it was designed with torque & fuel economy in mind. It just needs an upgraded cam and heads to do away with the power real limiters. But if you're willing to go that far, on an old engine, you may as well give it a real refresher. Thinking that even a 'stock 305' would not be good for off-roading a light duty vehicle is just ignorance.
I like how most commenters are far from being helpful. instead they say do it my way insert my favorite engine here.opinions are like assholes everybody's got one,and It's what you are being when you say shit like that.
lose the 305. if your going old school SBC, build a 383 instead with AFR 165 CC heads a small off road design hydraulic roller cam like a comp X4-258HR or X4-260-HR. 9:0 compression and fast EFI TBI injection, 1 5/8 small tube headers should make about 450 lbs of torque and around 400HP. it would be a stump pulling beast. - the AX-15 is a strong trans. it should hold up behing this motor, just make sure its rebuilt. NP321 transfer case, but I would defiantly swap out the front and rear axles. either a New mopar D44 or ford 8.8 in the back and a new mopar D44 upfront.
I appreciate that you guys would spend the time to answer viewer questions, but seriously ... choose questions from somebody who has an IQ over 90 at least. The work and expense for the motor .. a 305 ... is just a dumb idea.
David Knauss That could be pretty awesome, especially with the motors and batteries that are now becoming available. There is a Korean company that converted a TJ or JK to electric sounded and acted a lot like a R/C Scaler!
If you CAN keep the 4.2 ( I assume you're swapping out a motor with a working bottom end and doenst have a hole in the block), and want a little more power. Just my two sense from a guy who likes motors on RUclips
318/360 magnum they are like 300 bucks now, basically indestructible
I had the 360 in my 1998 ZJ (lx) , they eat water pumps for some reason.
In any case, they are cheap because aftermarket parts and cost are much higher vs any 305 or LS swap.

An inline straight engine will out live a V type engine 6 to 1.

A 304, 360, 401 will bolt directly to the ax15, you just need the correct pilot bushing, motor mounts and radiator big enough to cool it.
A Chrysler 8.25 would work good and if you pull the right one you can stay 5 lug and rear disks
Seriously. I'm a chevy guy, but if the 4.2 runs good. Just keep it add FI and wheel.
My 4.2 runs great but the bloody highway speeds are painful. However, if its healthy its still fun
@Jbog07 Could be, i mean i do 70 fine. Besides, on that little death box i don't want to go any faster lol.
I love Jeep YJ's.
Mine is nearly finished... (finally)
1991 YJ 4.0L AX15. It had the high pinion Dana-30 in the front, but I swapped in a Dana-30 without the CAD from a '98 XJ. I also swapped an XJ Dana-44 in the rear. Watch the engine masters for the 305 they did. Actually made great power and was torquey af. Exactly what you'd want in an off road rig
no no no,you need low down torque,ie,6 cyl,go see a mechanic with brains, not speed,up his nose.ever heard of unimog,
harry walker an all stroke and no bore motor makes low down torque. And a similar displacement v8 compared to a v6 will make more torque and power every day.
I'd do whatever Dave says. His Ultimate Adventure rig was sick and he knows his stuff
ADVANCED ADAPTER HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE 80S!!!!

this is so obscure. It's fascinating and hilarious all at once.
I did the v8 swap, a 70s Sbc block with vortec heads and msd fuel injection.th400 np203/205 with Chevy 6 bolt axles. It works great.
I have a decision to make about my M-715 project, has the idea of using the military AMG 242 Transfer case.

SUGGESTION: MORE JEEP YJ IN SOCIAL MEDIA!!!!
I thought dave chappelle was black? 🤷♂️🤔😂
Chase Ventrillaquist Reynolds no, he's a black supremacist.
Chase Ventrillaquist Reynolds he is?
A 305, in modern times, would never be worth it. Hell, 305's sucked back in the day. I can't believe anyone even remembers those damned things, let alone would want to put one in a YJ as an expensive and time-consuming project.

But a 350 is so much better
Harry Balzack when you have money to waste who cares?
Harry Balzack mmmmmm
Harry Balzack Harry ballsack
I had a buddy with a yj shoved a 5.9 magnum with a ax15 and a Ford 8.8 in the rear and it works great
i really liked this Q&A i would love to see more in the future
Dropping in a 350, nv4500, full Chevy harness... other issues I may tun into?
Dave was also talking about going to a carb or aftermarket FI, the 90 YJ was still carb from the factory so what's the difference. 91 was 1st year for FI on the 4.2.

I LOVE THE JEEP YJ!!!!
Damn Dave Chappelle looks different now.
He got one of those sammy sosa treatments...
ALL YJS HAVE A HP DANA 30 with cad in the FRONT, NO YJS HAVE A LOW PINION 30.
Gealii No they don't.
the only change made to the yj dana 30 was the larger ujoints towards the end of the yjs run. All yjs have high pinions with CADs from factory
Gealii I read that wrong lol thought you said they have low pinion. Oops
Gealii no you are WRONG!!!!
prove me wrong then
Did he ask what motor to buy? Did he say he was buying a motor? So what dose buy this motor it's better have to do with it? You want the motor, you buy it.
Why get only marginally better power out of the 305? Just bore out and stroke the 4.2 liter inline 6. Great torque, stock, no carb, and much more power
I have a YJ 4.2 with a header with Howell EFI runs pretty good
Make sure it is an AX15. That should be a BA10 with the 4.2 engine
4.2L got the AX-15 mid-'89 if I remember correctly.
So I've been wanting to put the Mopar fuel injection on my CJ8! WHERE CAN I FIND THAT KIT?? seems like it vanished off the Aftermarket or something! PLEASE let me know! Thanks!
Build the 4.2 or put a 5.9 magnum if you really want to upgrade.
Hey FRED! Get a supercharger and put it on a wrangler TJ with the 4.0 i6. Get it dyno'd and film it... and stuff!
What's the point in putting a 305? Might as well just out a 350
Agree keep the 4.2
what about using a chevy 3/4 44 front and corporate rear? And would like to go 327 and th350 with 205 transfer case
I am building a 86 Chevy 3/4 ton and I was wondering will a rebuilt 350 have enough power to do every day hauling or be able to do truck pulls?
dude2001steve 454 swap...
But I also would like to pass the gas station to
Steve, you can run the 350, but would look for an LS engine over the Gen II SBC.
If you just plan to tow, I would find a Cummins 4BT or 6BT. Even a Detroit Diesel 6.2 or 6.5, they are stupid cheap.

The old school 350 can make decent power. But the diesel swap would be best for towing and truck pulls. 454 terrible idea. Newer LS is better than a big block.
Jay Graham I would like to keep the 350 plus I would be plowing my yard with it and what towing I would do with it wouldn't be long distances
You guys should build that 4 cyl you have at home with an sbc 350, and make an episode of it
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
What if they made the video and the guy who did the question doesn’t even see it
H.O. Ford 5.0 paired to a borg Warner t18 4 speed out of a 81 f150 in my YJ. Leaps and bounds better than the 2.5 in reliability and performance.
I had the a 87 Yj and loved the 4.2L just my .02c
Idk I hate people who say first
Let the hate flow through you
Eli Livezey um what
I have a 305 as well but a 2001 jeep wrangler tj. With a 2.5 liter with a 5 speed manual. Would i use the same thing as Brian Wing
Fred, do you know anyone making the ford 4.0 to 700r4 adapter kit?
YJ Dana 30s are high-pinion. Really surprised these guys didn't know that.
IF YOU GO WITH A V8 PUT A 454 OR OTHER WAYS STAY THE WAY IT IS , THE 4.2 IS NOT BAD MOTOR , NOT THAT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCES THE 4.2 AND THE 305
Hello from birmingham!! Y'all by sloss furnace tracks?
I'll add to the group... why the hell would you go with a 305?
We need more yotas build!!!!!!! Amen
Build a green Tacoma!
My yj has a high pinion with center axle disconnect. I thought they all were the same on the yj.
All yjs and renix xjs had disconnect high pinion dana 30s
Why don't you guys put a 318 or a 360. It would be easier to swap and you'd actually have some power.
The guy writing in said he has a 305, they never said that was what they would run.
I love these guys
Fyi every yj from 87-95 had a high pinion front Dana 30 with the “cad” these axles are tough watch my videos for proof
My 305 makes 325hp but it is bored .30 over so take it as that is
4BT all the way, I regret not doing it sooner.
Too heavy. Get the one thats in Tube Sock
Dude get a 360 and be done with it. Or a Cummins 4bt
Do you know how heavy a 4bt is? A 305 won’t tear it apart. And there is a Chevy sbc for literally everything. And 305 is one of the most common engines.
If he wants 200hp just put a 4.3 in it. If he wants more get a 350.
Allen McKinney or he could just put a 4.0l in it, those are close right off the shelf, and everything should be easier to swap.
I miss you guys
yjs have high pinion and reverse cut gears
So swamped a 88 Cherokees engine into my 92 yj and now can’t get it to start I used all the yj parts onto the Cherokees engine except for the flywheel witch I left from the Cherokee any thoughts on what’s going on with that?
Probably the canuter valve.
6.0 ls and a 4l80e with an adapter plate for the transfer case
Agreed.
Even a 4.8 would be better.
He could PAC spring it, put a China turbo on it.
Drop a 4.0 HO head and EFI on the 4.2. That thing will smoke a 305 with less work.
Absolutely. The 305s are not a engine I would swap into anything
Thought 100% of YJ’s came with high pinion dana 30s? TJ’s and later model XJ’s had low pinion? No? Is my whole life a lie?
The transmission final drive ratio and the differential ratio determine how fast a vehicle will go. Not the size of the engine.
I see morons on jeep websites who want to put disc brakes on an old Willys 2A or 3A!?! Why? Your top speed is 40 mph. Why do you need disc brakes?
305? Why bother? Pile, get a real motor.
Wes R because you can't beat an American v8
herrick75 ......Nothing wrong with a V8, I love them but 305s are barely a V8. Should have done a hemi swap or a 350.

Is Dave's nickname Dirtbag Dave or is that only in my head?
Its Dirthead Dave
I am in the process of swapping a Ford 5.0L into a 1992 YJ. I'm scared
Hey can someone tell me pleas what diffs do the 1986 thru 1996 2.4 Nissan hardbody have and the 1986 thru 1996 v6 hardbody have ???pleas
i traded my 94 hardbody for a jeep. i still see it driving around town on occasion. also, i hope santa is real and comes tonight
4.2 can pump out way more torque
You dont have christmas in your country ??????
No YJ had an LP30...
Really ? Done this for years .
I like the Chevy 4.3 5.0 and 5.7 and him going with a 305 is better than say the lt with the optispark those things are turds
I'd love to hang out the next time y'all are in Birmingham. Shoot me a message.
Brandon Gray shit I wish I knew they were here in town! Would have been cool to meet
Paul Hudson the Alabama Army truck episode was filmed mostly at Off-Road Connections in Fultondale, I pass by there on my way to work every day.
It's all in the gearing lol
They trolled this guy so hard😂😂😂
Awesome
Nice
hey guy !!buy a k5 and youre done!!

I like how most commenters are far from being helpful. instead they say do it my way insert my favorite engine here.opinions are like assholes everybody's got one,and It's what you are being when you say shit like that.
Daily mine dish string low aid make associate isolate gifted environment.
LS swap!
Boundaries Unlimited Nah hemi's are a man's swap
What hemi? They new ones that dump the bottom ends out?
Not a rod or crank issue, it's a block issue.
The only reason to have a 305 in your vehicle is because it's the original engine that came in it.
Had a 305 once made a good boat anchor
Its dirtier every day not dirt every day get your grammar right
I was born in America
'murica
David gets it
lose the 305. if your going old school SBC, build a 383 instead with AFR 165 CC heads a small off road design hydraulic roller cam like a comp X4-258HR or X4-260-HR.
That's a shit thing to say.
Glad your "above 90 IQ" didn't require an edit of your post.
dave chapelle in white face smh
go with electric motor for a high torque rock crawler
David Knauss That could be pretty awesome, especially with the motors and batteries that are now becoming available. There is a Korean company that converted a TJ or JK to electric sounded and acted a lot like a R/C Scaler!
