@@MonikaMurd back in the 1980's, a woman done her apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic at Brambles Cranes & Heavy Haulage in Athol Park, South Australia. She went on, from what is known to me, to become a diesel engineer, transport trainer in many fields, she showed the 'men' how to operate triple road trains in and around Moomba. She is a professional in the true sense of the word, but, managed to get lost coming to me so that my Certificates 1 - 4 in Road Transport and Distribution could be done in the one very long day! She also admitted, that after spending a day with a crazy man, that she had learned a few new tricks!
The one trick that had her completely stumped was an operator sitting on a tractor forklift, back to the mast, and not turning around to see where the forks are when unloading from the truck. It is all done by smoke and mirrors!

When I worked for Caterpillar we had several female drivers. Back in the 70s it was unusual and the ladies were often labled with some very disparaging names. I found that they were more reliable than men and had more patience and less attitude. Years later in the military i had 5 women at night in a machine and welding shop. It was the best crew I ever had. All the guys on day shift told me how difficult they were and being the newest troop in the shop they put them with me as a joke. I had no problems at all. One night before getting going I got us all together and ask them why the day shift had told me that and not that way with me. One stepped up and said
"You ask us to do stuff instead of tell us. You also don't try to get in our pants all the time!" What a crew. They always got off shift early because everything was done. I miss those days........

Ok. But that doesn't mean that there aren't women coming into the industry now who want to feel special. It seems there were always women in industries and made it by doing the same as everyone else. Now there are lots who want special treatment, but they never last long. Those that last would have been there without the need for discriminatory hiring, like all the good ines before them. It is unfair for the good ones that people will judge them by the actions of the bad ones. Filling the industry with women isn't a good solution because the average woman isn't suited to it any more than the average man is suited to traditionally female roles, where there have also been a small number of men.

Miss you forgot about John Rackham Henri Nyberg two talented engineers working for Associated Equipment Company (AEC) Southall Middlesex UK. In 1932 between them built the Model O853 'Colonial' an 8x8 Tractor with steering first and fourth, axles on oscillating bogies. Designed to tow two self tracking eight wheel double bogie trailers built by Roger Dyson of Liverpool over the worst goat mule tracks you can imagine, linking Australia,s isolated settlements with the outside world. It is this pioneering road train that saved Australia from Japanese invasion during the dark years of world war two. Grossly overloaded it transported vital war materials ,on less than 120hp provided by an 8,8 litre AEC A180 direct inject diesel.

Relax a little when you shift, don't force it. Just a tip to help you change smoother.
Don't pull on the stick to change gear, as soon as you release your foot from the throttle you only need the weight of 1 finger & it should drop straight into neutral & with the weight of the same finger on the stick a tiny amount of pressure but don't force it, it will drop straight into gear as soon as the revs drop to match the road speed.
Remember No matter how many years any of us have been driving we still all grind a gear every now & then just some of us manage it when nobody's around.
    Keep up the good work..🤙🤙

As someone that's been in this industry a long time, i can tell you that it's good to see more women becoming truck drivers. I understand it's a male dominated industry atm, but i can also understand why. When driving on the roads with 3/4 trailers and you have a tyre blow out, those tyres can weigh as much as some women out there and Can cause serious injury to the driver that has to replace them. Luckily for us both we have tyre fitters on sites that do that hahaha. Respect for doing something that could be considered one of the most dangers jobs out there. Controlling 150 tonnes at 80kmhrs is no easy feat. Props to you! Maybe i'll see you on the road out there sometime soon!

Road trains started in the thirties. They were required to haul , I think , copper and manganese ore to the waterfront in north west Aust.. After the war engineer friends of mine in Melbourne were approached to design and build traction engines powered by steam that could pull a number of trailers through rough country. This was because the roads, if you could call them that, were continually covered over with dust and drifting sand. They had to decline the offer due to lack of finance. They went on to build a steam unit for motor vehicles, that was and is to my knowledge the lowest emission engine in the world. I could be excused for believing the Australian govt. went out of their way to send that company broke. When young people discuss their future I tell them to get out of the country.
