- This demo will show one very simple and easy song project which takes advantage of the new Chord Mode feature of the 4Pockets Helium MIDI sequencer and also the new Tone Packets feature to generate a guitar song in 4Pockets MIDI Strummer. It's very easy to set up and use the new features and start making some really nice sounds.
To be clear the new features being demonstrated in this video are the new Chord Mode in Helium MIDI Sequencer and the new Tone Packets protocol, developed by 4Pockets in association with Greg Riker and David Collett. The Tone Packets feature has been added to a few 4Pockets apps already and more will be supported soon. The custom layout in Helium that is shown is a longstanding feature, and this version was created specifically for use in this project to enhance the performance, and works completely independently from the Tone Packets and the Chord Mode to control the playback settings of MIDI Strummer.
*Note: It is recommended to start your chord progression on Bar 2 to give Strummer a run-up for that first chord (as shown in the demos below) within AUM. This was a tip from Paul at 4Pockets himself.

Just follow the procedure described at the end of the video to copy the custom layout into Helium. Note that the top rows are simply comments on which CC values to send to control Strummer, and not for entering notes. The CC values would be sent via the CC control lane in Helium or another app. Also, uploaded a new version which does not display the MIDI numbers that do not have any function.
I know I gotta get my hands dirty but I do appreciate your explanation
I haven't watched this yet, but I am glad you're covering this new stuff in Helium. Looking forward to the knowledge drop!
Great video Ed!
Thanks for stopping by! 👍
Cheers Ed for this brilliant work.
Thanks much!
im telling you all, Ed is fantastic
Ed, really good video. Thanks! 😀
Thanks David! I'm a big fan of your work. Your paper "Circle of Colors" is fascinating, and it really helped me to think in new ways about how harmony works. The chord color diagrams and animations in the Progressions app are really helpful. 👍
@@edzielinski Thanks, Ed. 😺 Best to you.
Hi Ed, Helium already has a custom grid layout for StrummerFX built in! It's called Strummer....
Interesting! I did not see that in the list. Perhaps it was included with a later version of Strummer from the app store? I first purchased Strummer around 4 years ago. Then I recommend that Strummer users check their custom layout list and see if there's one included. Thanks for the info.
While I appreciate all the work you're doing here, Ed to me this workflow is a bit overwhelming. I like to keep things simple. I need to watch this a few more times to grasp this. Love your stuff. I agree with, audi's comment below.
Absolutely. This was a case where the demo was packed with as much stuff as I could do to showcase it. Sort of like a triple decker double bacon cheeseburger with BBQ sauce, lol. Thanks!
Thank you Ed! I saw Lumbeat items in your Grid layout list at 9:16 ... Could i ask you how do you control these drum apps from Helium?
Sure thing. The Lumbeat drum apps can be controlled by MIDI input, but only the settings and parameters such as starting/stopping playback, volume, reverb level, soundset and so on, but not triggering the actual drums.
@@edzielinski Thank you, understand
