He’s looking like he’s finishing a lot stronger because he’s a higher caliber athlete than the field and those athletes are specialists in the 100m freestyle whereas Michael isn’t. However, because they’re specialists in the 100m freestyle, it’s going to look like Phelps has a strong second 50, when in reality it’s just that Phelps isn’t used to racing the 100m freestyle, whereas the lower caliber athletes that are specialists are ahead in the first 50m because they know how to race the 100m like how they’re supposed to.
