For nearly two years, investigators checked the records of every major pawn shop and gun dealer within 150 miles of Macon. They interviewed every person who had sold or pawned a Colt AR-15. After over 2000 leads, investigators received a break. After following up on pawn shop records, an investigator questioned a twenty-two-year-old man named Andrew Allen Cook on November 27, 1996. Cook acted suspiciously during his interview; he claimed that he had gotten rid of his AR-15 in April of 1994. However, the investigator noted that he had not purchased it until August of that year. Cook became defensive and said that he would not cooperate until he spoke with his father, who was an FBI agent. Investigators decided to look into him more thoroughly.
They discovered that he owned a Honda CRX similar to the one described by eyewitnesses. They also learned that an acquaintance had purchased him a nine millimeter Ruger handgun one year before the murders. He was put under surveillance for a week before he was arrested on December 4 on a hunting violation. After the arrest, his father told investigators that Cook had confessed to the murders; the couple were apparently random targets. Several friends also stated that he had confessed to killing the couple with an AR-15. He allegedly told one friend that he killed them to "see if he could get away with it". Ballistic testing determined that slugs from his rifle matched those found at the crime scene. Further testing determined that his Ruger handgun was also used in the murders. Finally, DNA testing connected tobacco spit on Michele's leg to Cook. In 1997, he was charged with the murders. In March of 1998, he was convicted and sentenced to death. He was executed on February 22, 2013.

Gary's murderer(s) has never been caught or identified nor has the author of the messages. However, his father recently found a tape which contained two 911 calls about the case. The first call occurred on March 8, 1986; the caller claimed to be the killer and asked about receiving a reward for turning himself in. He ended the call by stating that they would never catch him. The second call occurred on June 2, 1986; the caller claimed that Gary's killer had confessed to him. He claimed that the killer had committed the crime because of an arrest Gary Sr. made. The caller has never been identified and it is unknown if he is actually involved in the murder.
Gary Sr. still believes that Carl Mason had some involvement in his son's death. He believes that he most likely witnessed the attack and knows the perpetrator. However, no other evidence has been found to link Carl or anyone else to the crime.

I believe it was accidental. Anyone who has epilepsy knows how difficult it is to get to effective dosage with the meds. She may have thought if she took more it wd control her seizures. I'd like to know if she was having stronger and more frequent seizures in the weeks leading up to her death.

It says in the article she never reported him missing. She was hard to get a long with and estranged by her family for 10 years before her death.

If you convince yourself that suicide is in the family, you going to eventually believe yourself and harbor these thoughts, and in the end do something bad to yourself. If the Hemingway girls didn't know anything about their famous grandfather and the stories of a Hemingway curse, nothing would have happened to her and she would not have committed suicide. Because all people are given a free will of their own. Suicide should not be seen and spoken of as hereditary and a curse
