    Tyres: Michelin Anakee Wild
    Panniers: Bumot Defender Evos
    Handguards: Barkbusters
    End Can: Scorpion
    Bar risers: SW Motech

    Nice Video, thank you!!
    Just a few suggestions (I've this VStrom myself, she hits the tarmac less than 15% and I wouldn't really change it for the (more fragile... ssshh) Africa Twin):
    -get a centerstand, will definitively change you life
    -change the stock mirrors with after-market flippable ones (you can wait untill you drop it badly... those rigid ones get broken quite easily. Then change both of them with flippable ;))
    -you can rotate the clutch and brake levers downward a bit (or a lot) it will improve your comfort when standing, you'll really feel the difference and it's free
    -don't mount those panniers when you go for a one-day ride in the mud.. those sharp angles won't be friendly with your leg if the sweety falls on you. For short rides, go with soft (and light) panniers
    -suspension don't actually soften when adjusting the pre-load, you just modify the sag. If you need harder susps, change the spring(s) (and the mono)
    -the tank bag is very useful when you travel.. but on a dirt road it really cracks your nuts :)
    -the stock gearshift lever is quite fragile when the off-road. When it will bend, replace it with the folding one from SWMotech (it's also adjustable in length, leaving more room for the bigger boots)
    -if usually you're a lone rider, get a winch, she's slim but heavy ;)
    -I love the engine configuration... untill I don't have to remove/change the spark plugs... a nightmare!!!
    -I also love that with a set of tools below 3Kg, you can actually repair/change by yourself 70% of the bike (and a remaining 25% at home with few more tools :)) (try to do it with the, gorgeous as well I admit it, BMW).
    She's a lovely baby, isn't she?

    I bought the XT 1000 4 days ago and it is great, from the start I put a Remus titanium exhaust on, Led blinkers and a Givi trakker 52 liters. I Need it for road use and it does the job for now, perfect.
    My father in law bought a new 1200 GS 3 months ago and likes how VStrom is so simple and light to handle.

    I have been running Anakee Wilds on my 650 v-strom for a few years. Toured the Alps and Pyrenees on them last year through torrents. They are worthy on the tarmac and give great confidence in the road on road. But best of all they turn heads and draw attention. Even from the gendarme!

    Aluminum panniers are the best way to break a leg off road and usually one simple tip over will rack them bad enough that they no longer seal.

    Aah Nathan I admire and enjoy your posts, ethos and no no-nonsense attitude. I even met you in person and you convinced me to buy your book, jolly good read! But come on, changing preload for a firmer/softer ride is just not right, that is not its purpose. Don't be one of the hoards of bike journos/vloggers who misrepresent exactly what preload is for. It is there to adjust ride height for load (SAG). Changing preload is to keep the bikes attitude right and maintaining rake & trail. A little more rear SAG bias is often desired by off-roaders to extend the trail and add a bit more front wheel stability from the forces of obstacles and rough ground. Once you set your SAG, if you want a firmer/softer ride then add/remove damping and leave your preload alone (unless you change your load again). Maybe you might do a video on it, the V-Strom and Africa Twin are great candidates for explaining SAG/Preload settings. Still like your posts and no nonsense style, keep on riding.

      You certainly make an interesting point Terry and it sounds like you know your onions, far more than I. Oddly I made the changes with the advice and guidance of someone else who knows their onions so I don't think it's added anything other than more confusion to the already confusing dark art of suspension adjustment. The changes improved the bike off road, I know that much. But you're right, a video with a suspension expert might be just the ticket. With you perhaps?

    • @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff
      @terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff 5 лет назад +1

      nathanthepostman - I’m no expert and it’s not a dark art ( except competitive racing setups, beyond my scope). My knowledge stemmed from driving out of a dealer on a new Africa Twin and frightening myself to death with the handling. I ended up changing a rear spring, setting SAG correctly and the bike was transformed. I would be happy to do a session with you but it’ll have to be on your next trip to Ireland! I won’t hold you to it but if your ever over you are very welcome and you’ll be well taken care of.

    This or your new V85TT? And when I say this I mean the V-Strom 1050XT with its electronic cruise control to match the Guzzi's, but basically the same bike. For road riding only. Cheers!

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  4 года назад +1

      Great question and I considered a new vstrom instead of the Guzzi. I've not ridden the new one but have always liked the strom and I think in many ways it'll be a better bike than the Guzzi. Most certainly more dependable. There are a few niggles creeping through on the Guzzi owners forums. I think the strom might also be a more engaging ride on road although I think the Guzzi is more set up for moderate off road. I guess I went for the Guzzi because I couldn't bring myself to spend that amount of money on a strom. The Guzzi is different, odd and a nice bike. I don't regret the decision just yet

      nathanthepostman thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it. I'm going to have to try to find a V85TT to test ride, but not easy here in Sydney, Australia. I currently have a 2012 V-Strom 650 that I've had since new and still really enjoy riding. However I'm starting to do more two-up riding and finding my bike a bit under powered and it's not the best under hard braking two-up either. (Fine solo riding). Because of the beer flu, the new 1050 isn't going to be here till November... :-( Oh well... Thanks for your feedback and stay safe mate.

    1:24 this huge pocket for mud is big mistake. Designe of exhaust pipe with lambda and oil filter is good for road bike, but it is wrong on "adventure" bike. Suzuki should make pipe more closer to engine.

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  5 лет назад

      Yeah I guess they just used the engine they had from the old TL 1000 sports bike and didn't invest in a redesign for the vstrom. I suppose in fairness to Suzuki they never marketed the bike as an off roader, more road based 'adventure' bike but agreed, it is something that lets it down a bit

    I have tested one of these last weekend and I didn't like it too much, to be honest. I couldn't help but finding it a bit lifeless. The switches and the dashboard have a cheapo feel and there simply wasn't enough space for my almost 2 metres. The engine is not very smooth or powerful but very usable though. The Honda AT is the better bike. But I prefer the Super Ténéré anyway...

  • @gattonpc

    You really CAN'T compare the 1000 xt Vstrom with 1000cc Africa twin.. Africa Twin 1000cc is in her own class..Trust me.. i own both bikes.. and there is no comparation for those two bikes. I will sell the V-strom and keep the Africa Twin.. is just an amazing bike..and a round the globe bike for that matter too.

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  5 лет назад

      Yeah different bikes for sure, but for power and weight they're nigh on identical. To me the biggest difference is the amount of suspension travel and wheel size. Change that on the vstrom and I think you'd have very comparable bikes. As they are standard, I'd have the vstrom over the Africa twin if I was only doing road work. If I was doing more off road work I'd probably get 1090 R, and if I was going around the world, then yeah, probably an africa twin!

    • @gattonpc
      @gattonpc 5 лет назад

      @@nathanthepostman You've compared the bikes from the "standard" point of view" in the video as i saw.. If you start and modify any bike to fit for adventure and offroad/onroad then you preaty much can go with any bike, but that's not my point.. as a standard bike like the one in the video and a "standard" africa twin there are no comparation.. Africa Twin comes standard from factory as a "start and go" anywhere. V-strom don't. You just can't go with a standard V'strom where you go with a standard africa twin. V-strom is not even close to that.

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  5 лет назад +2

      @@gattonpc yes and I'm not arguing with that. The Africa twin is the much better off road bike. But I think the vstrom is the better road bike, which is where most of these types of bikes stay anyway. So what I'm saying is that it's a shame it gets overlooked, and also a shame that Suzuki didn't try harder to make a modern Dr big version as I think the basics are there. It doesn't help that I'm not a huge fan of the Africa twin. It's a decent bike, but Honda were capable of better. But as long as you like yours that's all that matters
