Back in the 70's my graduating thesis for my Environmental Design degree was, "Japanese Versus Scandinavian Influences", which included a slide presentation as well. My teacher was so impressed, she asked if she could use it in the future for her classes. I wasn't aware of any "Japandi" design style at the time. Who knows, maybe I ushered in the trend! Christa Reed
Me and my fiancé always talked about combining the Scandinavian and Japanese style together I love this concept. I am half Scandinavian from Iceland and he is Japanese Polynesian. We both share the love of minimalism and I am very excited to put this concept into the apartment we just moved into. I think also Ikea is a great store to check out for this style too :)
@Soa Lena Tjøstheim Eide That's geographically definitely true. Though worth to mention here, when talking about Scandinavian Design, Finland & Iceland have arguably had even more influence on the Scandinavian design modernism movement than some of the actual - geographically - Scandinavian countries.
This Scandi has always thought that Japanese interior design looked so much like what I know from home. I sometimes (more often than I would like to admit tbh...) have trouble telling wether a room is Japanese or Scandinavian. A lot of Danish design is very popular in Japan and if you know what to look for you can spot Danish pieces in almost every Japanese room tour! It’s fun how more or less the same idea can originate in very different cultures located so far from each other. Side note: I also see a lot of “home” in quite a lot of Korean interior pictures/videos - I’m not sure if it’s because Japanese/Scandinavian decor is popular there though or if it’s yet another similar style of its own.
I LOVE THIS VDO of YOURS! Its the best explanation story of japandi style in youtube!! Im obsessed! Thanks for creating this content just in time for my home interior development stage. I have a question on Wabisabi style, i also kinda like it too but no good vdo is found about it yet.. can u help explain more briefly?
I am going through a lot of videos which teach Japandi style, I can honestly say your explanation and points out-beat most! Will watch more of you now on! Awesome work
As someone who has lived in Japan for over 16 years I have yet to truly see the Japandi style here, especially in all the examples shown (which are more Western versions of the concept). Wood slat walls? In hotels or other public spaces, sure. Inside homes? Not so much. Dark walls or patterned wallpaper? Again, very very rare. Most walls here are off-white, and EVERY wall, including the ceiling, is wallpapered (it's a textured wallpaper). The only exceptions are in the shower/bath area and parts of the kitchen. I love Japandi style but it's actually quite hard to do here. Most homes are built cheaply out of cheap materials and only meant to last 20-25 years, so unless you are really rich, it's hard to have a home full of natural materials like real wood. Not surprisingly, Western trends like shabby chic, glam, farmhouse, and boho, are much more popular here, especially with younger people.
Regarding rental housing, you are right. As for the detached house, people are free to choose materials and designs. Modern concrete homes are popular, but real wood homes are still popular. Especially second houses in summer resorts such as Karuizawa are often made of fine wood.
Lol As a Norwegian, there's mo word such as ''HYGGA''. There's no -A in ''hygge''. Hygge means the same in Norwegian as in Danish: cosy/good time. I assume you've heard the Danish version, and can't pronounce it, so it turned into Hygga...
IMO that remark regarding using shoji screens “literally” is “cliche”, is obnoxious. There’s nothing bad with using an item the way it was traditionally designed to be used ... putting a “cliche” label on it just sounds like you’re looking down your nose at the traditional concept of the piece. Highly unnecessary & idiotic. Might as well tell me I’m cliche for wearing pants on my legs. Be creative and use it in new ways for sure, but don’t dismiss using it for the purpose it was designed for at the very beginning.
I was literally decorating my living room this way, thinking I made it up 😭 I was like "oooo this is such a good mash up I'm a genius" 😂💕 I'm a Canadian making their home aesthetic Danish and Japanese lol 🇨🇦🇩🇰🇯🇵
Technically, if you came up with the idea by yourself without hearing of it somewhere, you are a genius even if somebody came up with it before you So you can still pat yourself on the back 😅
🍃Posh Thank for a complete Janpani description & definition. My home is a 3bdrm home dressed in Japandi Style. I feel complete, warmth, cozy & well setteled. I have Beige Walls, a Black Sofa, beatiful Beige & Black 6×9 Carpet & decor colors of Red, pinches of Yellow, Wooden fireplace & Hardwood floors. I do love my Space.
Thank you so much! I literally just learned the term Japandi yesterday and plan to decorate my living room and bedroom in this style with the exception of low-to-the-ground furniture. I’m 5’9” and it’s too difficult to stand from a low couch or bed.
This is the best Japandi video I've seen because it gives due weight to the Japanese side of the style. All other videos I've seen on here are very Scandi-focused. Thank you for your thoughtful treatment of the subject.
Yeah another video 🥳 Scandi and Japanese design! What could be better? 😍 Great video as always my friend ❤️! Love the music choice! I didn’t know much about Japandi 🍙 before you introduced it to me!! Love it!
This is exactly what I was looking for.. you have beautifully explained the amalgamation of two similar yet micro distinct design profiles. Glad RUclips recommended and I listened😃… Subscribed👍🏼
New sub, great RUclips recommendation ! Some quality, informative videos. You mentioned places to shop Japandi, are there any budget places you could suggest please 😬.
I always look forward to your new uploads. I absolutely adore your videos. They are so well put together with the edits, photos, and soft background music. It shows that you really put a lot of thought and effort into making them. Also, your way of breaking down the styles, giving thorough proof and explanations, and even more your passion for home decor is inspiring! 😊 As long as you keep uploading, I'll keep watching. Much love! ❤
Traditional Japanese style is one thing. But in fact most Japanese people living in cities have very small spaces crammed with stuff and very little decorating aesthetic. It's a ruse, nothing like the reality of how most Japanese people live. They do not have minimalistic apartments. I know because I've lived there and have seen the reality of how people really live there.
For the ones interested: (vertical) wood slat walls and room dividers are ALL the rage in Scandinavia right now. All living rooms shown in local interior decor forums this past year have had them or has been about the get them installed 😂
Great video! So informative I watched it multiple times. I’m a big fan of Scandi/modern but wanted a bit warmer color palette. Love the Japandi muted earth tones & especially those wood slat walls!
Wow. This was really informative and inspiring without being cliche and shallow. Appreciate the images used as examples and also the pointers on where to shop!
It is so refreshing to see a video that not only conveys a sense of style but also captures all the elements for simple living. We are in the process of moving from our current home and looking for other options in creating a home with less clutter. I have alway been a fan of minimal living but have to also incorporate the love of a cozy home for my husband. It will be a new chapter and keeping my fingers crossed that we will find something that we will both enjoy together. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and will share your ideas with him. Thank you for sharing.
Now I'm not an expert, of course, so I can't say if this is on point or not. But as a complete layman wanting to understand japandi, this seems like an excellent video. Haven't come across another video yet that was so in-depth and accessible. Very helpful! :)
finally find out the name of this home style, before this i just search differnt key words like "japan home style" and "skandinavi style" but never fit, and then japandi so fit with my style
I love that I discovered Japandi I’ve always been a fan of both Japanese and Scandinavian homes and never thought of combining the two Definitely my goal now lol
I'm in Japan moving to a new flat so am searching through American interior design channels since I thought ppl there are way ahead in this field than in Japan. Then I find this Japandi introducing Muji and Karimoku...gave me something to think about our own brand...which I thought was boring. lol
yes yesss yesssss!!! I LOVE THAT THERE IS A NAME FOR THIS STYLE NOW! I've always been a fan of Japanese style interiors, but not the hardcore tatami room and bamboo everything style!
it is beautiful and warm and simple. The low furniture however can become a problem for some older people, struggling to get up from low furniture, there are lots of them who love modern furniture. I see this time and time again with the older generation, from 65+ sometimes even younger and also disabled people.

This is definitely my style and I didn't even know it has a name!
Snap.... I have done the same & never knew 😂🇬🇧x
me too
Same!
I used to call it something along the lines of 'earthy minimalism'.
💛Exactly the same
Aha! That’s why IKEA is doing so well in Japan 😃
IKEA does well in any country/culture 👍🏼
If they where here on Brazil they would sell a lot! The problem is our money is currently worth nothing hahahahah

Polynesian would go nicely in the mix, I would think. Natural colours and textures, and the woven grasses etc.. 😁😁👍
@Soa Lena Tjøstheim Eide That's geographically definitely true.

You look like a young Uma Thurman
Okay, the emoji at 2:38 was hilarious...
😏 🤭
I had to go back and laugh at that....after asking what is that
Ahahhh same here!😅
Best Japandi introductory vid out there! 🙌 Could you please do one on Junglalism and Jungalow?
My video on boho decor would cover a lot of what makes up jungalow :) I'd recommend starting with that!

I love that, too. Ultimately, no one can claim an idea as their own. All ideas belong to Inspiration.
Never knew my indescribable preference had a term ..... ❤️✨
And there I was trying hard to decide between Scandinavian or Japanese interior design 🤣
Ikr! Both styles look so good
