I've been decorating Japandi not knowing it, it's nice to see there's a name for this mixed style. I'm Nordic and I love Nordic design, clean lines and natural materials but I've never really loved the "too" simple and light colour palette in Scandinavian style so I've been bringing dark, earthy tones to my interior. I really fell in love with Japanese interiors when I visited Japan. I really loved it when local brands collab with Japanese designers and bought my plates from a local Japanese woman who had this little store here (unfortunately not anymore). And of course I love Muji.
I really love the fact that you point out that they are a cultural style and as such have a deeper meaning , and that this style is a representation of that concept.

THANK YOU! After all these years of my love of black, beige & white and a hint of burnt orange and could never figure out what my style was. I look around and all these little treasures acquired over years that I adore are Japandi. Better late than never, I am 71.
What I love most about Japandi is that it makes Japanese Zen accessible to people with European-style homes. I always wanted to decorate in the Zen style but worried that it'd look ridiculous in the concrete 70s-style apartments we have here.
I live in Asia, and I would argue most of us live in apartments that are basically just concrete blocks 😂 but you can still absolutely include elements of Japanese zen while making them appropriate to the space. We do it all of the time here- show rooms aren't representative of real applications! Do what makes you feel comfortable in your own space and don't let that concrete box stop you!
Dear Nick, you are the best . Honestly speaking, I have created my home in this Japandi style without knowing there is a style call Japandi , thanks to you now I can proudly tell friends who come to visit where my inspiration comes from. Wishing you a great weekend.

However, now I live together with a Korean boyfriend, so discovering Japandi only a few weeks ago, this is definately a perfect way to bring an Asian feeling into our mutual home! Thanks for your video - it contains so much good info ❤️
As always, great video. And you mentioned, more than once, the Japanese concept of embracing the broken, represented in gold-mending of broken pottery. It's called kintsugi and it was a hit for a while.
Two things: 1) I can’t wait to see your farmhouse style overview. 2) how do you feel about mixing countertop materials? Butcher block island + quartz peripherals? Maybe soapstone and bamboo?
How interesting. I like this style for a kitchen or bathroom or dining room. However, I like something much more cozy/colorful & comfy for a living room.
I think the practical element of Japanese low and simple furniture is useful for a small space too. When we would stay with my aunt in Japan in the summers growing up, she had a low table and we ate on pillows on the tatami floor. When we were ready for bed, the table was put away and replaced with futons on the floor in the same room for sleeping.

I knew my style was a mix of Japanese Zen and Scandi but I had no idea Japandi was a thing 😍 This video was perfect and I love your breakdowns of Wabi Sabi and Hygge!
Muji stuff is high quality and long lasting. Their pulp shelving units are great. I moved house a few times over the years, and even after dissembling and assembling a few times they’re still good, better than Ikea furniture.
I only found you a couple of weeks ago but I am really enjoying all your videos and I am learning loads! I’m currently studying an interior design diploma and your videos are helping me so much! I had never heard of japandi before but I think it’s quickly creeping up at the top of my favourite styles! ♥️
My style is somewhere between Japandi and "old, rustic cottage minimalism." I like the modern, sleek look, but also want the character, slight imperfection, warmth, and craftsmanship of some older pieces. It gets even weirder with Muji; not only do they sell homewares and clothing, but they also sell skincare.
Thank you for the video! I’m Japanese that lives in the US for few years now, and I’m trying to decorate my place somewhat Japanese inspired! I agree that Muji has a lot of pieces, and I wish there was Muji near me 😱
Im from white rock and I've got to go to old faithful 😍 I had no idea this existed. I've also recently learned of Japandi and have been adding touches of it to my already scandi place. Its gorgeous.
I think I'm more of a partial MidCentury Japandi... I love the design shapes of mid century furniture pieces with warm woods, the clean bright Scandinavian touch in a simply tasteful Japanese space.
I’m 59 years old and think I’ve been decorating like this all my life - just didn’t know what it was called and I do throw in a bit of deco & nouveau in as well.
Excellent and perfect timing for me as we continue to build our new home and are getting to the stage of flooring, cabinets etc. Just ordered the Wabi Sabi book you recommended, thank you, will definitely be one I will use for this decorating journey plus it’s beautiful. Hi, A scandinavian subscriber here. I enjoyed seeing you describe the scandi style. I never consciously tried to make my home "scandi" but when i heard your description and looked with other eyes on my home I see i have a scandi home. I do use a lot more colour though, but when i do there is still a sleekness to it. I really like watching your videos.

I appreciate your non-judgmental approach in your videos. We are about to move into our first house and have a limited budget for initial shopping and updates, but your videos help give me little ways we can create better spaces even if they're imperfect.
for unique handemade amd uneven ceramics i also loooove studio arhoj from denmark 🙌🏻 fits perfectly with scandi obviously, but also with japandi. especially their „edo“ series 😍
This reminds me of the capsule wardrobe fashion philosophy. So you go very minimalistic and focus on a few neutral colours (like pick 2 or 3 from grey cream black beige brown denim navy camel) and then you design your wardrobe to be as few pieces as possible but like everything kind of goes with everything so you have oodles of style combinations. So the big feeling with that is to buy very few high quality pieces that are resistant to trends (preferably sustainable design in terms of materials, craftsman wages etc). but instead of having a boring canvas that you can bedazzle with cheap trendy pieces, your basic wardrobe must have personal style pieces that reflect you - like you can include a leopard print skirt that’s a bit more statement than neutral if it’s something that you can wear with a lot of other stuff. Basically what i’m trying to say is that while standard minimalism can make every house feel like a pretty but impersonal hotel room (could be anyone’s house), a japandi room (or wardrobe) has a few select (possibly imperfect) pieces that the owner loves and it reflects their personal style. But like also mix cream and grey and natural materials.

I'm so glad! Yes it's important to respect that culture impacts design.
Thank you for sharing your expertise, Nick, and for encouraging people to buy from their local artists or even give it a go themselves. God bless you!
You explained the concept of japandi and the meanings behind the design style quite eloquently. Yo/ your site is a great find. Thx
„Cultural traditions that I think you need to respect“ YES, THANK YOU
Thank you SO much for speaking on supporting local artists. I am in love with this design style, and I'm very excited to go to my local shops 😍
Of course! This style is all about a few beautiful, handcrafted pieces that you can sometimes only get from local artists.
@@Nick_Lewis 😊 I'm already scoping out local pottery! Your videos are such a joy! Thank you for sharing your insights 👏
I just wanted to tell you that I discovered your channel yesterday and I subscribed and now a bunch of my friends have subscribed as well. I find you to be a source of refuge and gentle humor with all that is going on in the States. You have no idea how much I appreciate the escape. Thank you, Nick.
Yaaaaay, a new Nick video! Perfect thing for with my morning coffee ☺️
And here I am answering all of your questions with my morning coffee! ☕️ cheers!
japandi fusion mixed with MCM and pops of art deco is a lot of fun if tastefully done
I would love to see an Art Deco style video next!!
Yes I love art deco! So much beautiful design, not enough time to film them all!
I love Art Deco. In small quantities. I've seen too many places just smear it everywhere and it makes my eyes bleed!
Yes. Is Art Nouveau coming back too? I love elements of both.
Same! I think that’s what I’m trying to achieve in my bedroom but I like too many styles and it all gets jumbled 😣
@@ravenm6443 same here! My husband is a mixture between japandi and modern 🤣
Thank you for the video! I’m Japanese that lives in the US for few years now, and I’m trying to decorate my place somewhat Japanese inspired!
I agree that Muji has a lot of pieces, and I wish there was Muji near me 😱
It's very cool! Love Muji!
Japandi is almost perfect for me. I want to live in a Miyazaki film but with little pops of cutesy things my husband cant seem to stop buying.
Im from white rock and I've got to go to old faithful 😍 I had no idea this existed. I've also recently learned of Japandi and have been adding touches of it to my already scandi place. Its gorgeous.
That was a fantastic video. Had no idea about Japandi but I love it. Thanks
I think I'm more of a partial MidCentury Japandi...
I love the design shapes of mid century furniture pieces with warm woods, the clean bright Scandinavian touch in a simply tasteful Japanese space.
Yes!! Thank you for bringing the beautiful Japandi / Wabi-Sabi more to the front of the class!!
My pleasure! Beauty in imperfections!
My husband spent most of his career in Japan and China, he owned a import / export company, now we are retired but we both love this style bot for in our home but outside as well as we are building a Japanese garden on our new home. Again thank you, love your videos and recommendations re shopping options, so helpful. Cheers. 🦋
Thanks for talking about the Wabi Sabi aesthetic!
I’ve been teaching about the concept in therapy and meditation sessions.
I’ve been in deep love with Japandi for many years.
Really appreciating your videos - this is exactly the style guide I needed as I decorate my home. I also loved discovering you’re in Vancouver! So great to feature some amazing local retailers and small businesses. 🇨🇦💕
Fellow Canuck here! 🇨🇦. Great video, I love this design style and have saved this video for future reference 😁
Yay more Canadians! 🇨🇦
@@Nick_Lewis and another Vancouverite!
As a dane, I loved that you brought in the meaning of hygge. So cute 🥰🥰
Being a Finn who loves Japanese culture, this style is made for me lol.
Looooooove this style. I think you are one of the only ones ever talk about this style
I'm over the Japandi Scandi moon with this segment. 💞
Love how you break it down so it's easy to understand the style. Thank you
A very good explanation, finally i understand the style... 👍 thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Pleaseee please do more videos on Japandi! I’ve been looking for more on it since last year and ppl r only just starting to talk about it. Love that you brought up muji it’s one of my fave stores!
Yessss!! I've been waiting for this! You mentioned it in one of your previous videos and I've been curious ever since. I love how simple and classic it is
It ticks all my favourite boxes. ✔️ Natural Materials ✔️ Simple Furniture ✔️Quality Focussed ✔️Comfortable
I had no idea this was a thing, but it combines two of my favorite styles! Love it
It's pronounced more like "hig-eh" 😊
Source: Canadian who has lived in a Scandinavian country for 7 years
Great video!
The first part he pronounced very well,
I do not agree with the hig- part. The -eh part yes.
The 3ed time he said it was almost a perfect pronunciation of the hole word.
-Im Danish
@@TheaSBwadt Perhaps in Danish, but that's also the least pleasant sounding Scandinavian language *insert potato throat joke here*. In Norwegian and Swedish Hygge or Hyggelig are a "hig" no "hoog" sound.
When we lived in Japan we bought a lot at MUJI. Little more expensive than other stores but the quality is definitely there for both housewares and clothing.

Wow Nick, Im so glad I stopped at your channel, very educational & Thank You!
🌿Now Ive always loved the Japanese culture, style & food, Japan was my DreamCountry to visit one day as a teen but time has gone by & my destiny didnt call on it, although my youngest brother was able to go in the 70s as a Exchange Student for 3mos & Dad went while in the Armed Srv. Anyway my brother returned with 3 hand paintings, gorgeous & since I've built my home interior around the pics.
🍃My colors are Black sofa, beige Walls, my Carpet is beige & black, End tables & Coffee table in Black metal. I have splashes of Red & Yellow throw pillows & flower arrangements. No mirrors or clocks, a few family pics on a Black 5shelf garden rack.
🍃I Love it & feel so at peace with my space.
Please bring more
Japandi videos.
Bamboo and birch tree are great to connect Japanese and Scandinavian
As I get older, this style is what I’m looking for!
Right? Especially with all the chaos outside - I need some more tranquility in my life!
@@Nick_Lewis that’s it! Calm home, calm mind. I look back at my first apartment and the colours! All the rooms different bold colours! Hurts my eyes lol!
I love this one. I was thinking "I wish he knew about Muji" and BAM! Muji
Tip for tableware, vases etc. - H&M Home! Reasonably cheap but looks the part ❤
I love your passion when u talk about Wabi Sabi. Wish to be ur lover !
