One of my favourites aspects of japandi is that there is such a focus on texture, so you get a muted calming colour palette, but the texture is comforting and still interesting and layered
Fun fact: The scandinavian mid century furniture designers (and arcitechts) were inspired by Japanese aestethics. So in a way they were the first Japandi designers.
A great “wood” for Japandi is bamboo imo. It’s both light and distinctly Asian, plus it’s very sustainable, which is definitely a core value in both cultures.
@@naturegirl321 as a floor option bamboo is great, it’s actually harder than oak. But you’re right that it’s more difficult to use for say furniture carpentry. It’s also worth pointing out that bamboo absorbs more CO2 than most trees and release up to 20% more oxygen. Plus it grows very fast and can be cultivated on nutrition-poor soils! (No I don’t have stock in bamboo lol)

I really loved it when local brands collab with Japanese designers and bought my plates from a local Japanese woman who had this little store here (unfortunately not anymore). And of course I love Muji.

I think the practical element of Japanese low and simple furniture is useful for a small space too. When we would stay with my aunt in Japan in the summers growing up, she had a low table and we ate on pillows on the tatami floor. When we were ready for bed, the table was put away and replaced with futons on the floor in the same room for sleeping.

great explaination. my favorite. I like more Scandi with a few zen element. Like you explain different style. Make people discover themselves! I like minimalist idea but not into minimal style. Now I understand why. Thanks Nick!
I often find myself gravitating towards mid century and Japanese influences. It can feel very similar to this but much warmer in color and darker woods.
I just found out about the style. I came from a different channel and I learn about BoHo the other day. And then I learn about rustic. And now I just learn about Scandinavian. But this style japandi just took it to a whole different level. It makes Scandinavian look like a superficial little brother. It is so simple and beautiful 🥲
Yessss!! I've been waiting for this! You mentioned it in one of your previous videos and I've been curious ever since. I love how simple and classic it is

Beautiful! I would love to see a Scandi-California Coastal how to video. I am finding the Scandinavian design is pulling me in but I also am drawn to a very subtle beach design. I am not sure how to pull a blue ( love turquoise but am thinking navy might be a better color for this mix) into a Scandinavian living room but would love to try.

Excellent and perfect timing for me as we continue to build our new home and are getting to the stage of flooring, cabinets etc. Just ordered the Wabi Sabi book you recommended, thank you, will definitely be one I will use for this decorating journey plus it’s beautiful. My husband spent most of his career in Japan and China, he owned a import / export company, now we are retired but we both love this style bot for in our home but outside as well as we are building a Japanese garden on our new home. Again thank you, love your videos and recommendations re shopping options, so helpful. Cheers. 🦋
As a Scandinavian (grew up and live in Norway), and who loves Japanese culture (visited Japan summer 2019), I love Japandi style! Thank you for this. Finally I know what interior style I want!!! Besides totally slaughtering that term, there’s no -oo, nor -a sound, which we also have in Norway, and basically means “cozy”.
I’ve been in deep love with Japandi for many years.
Pleaseee please do more videos on Japandi! I’ve been looking for more on it since last year and ppl r only just starting to talk about it. Love that you brought up muji it’s one of my fave stores!
I love your passion when u talk about Wabi Sabi. Wish to be ur lover !
Im from white rock and I've got to go to old faithful 😍 I had no idea this existed. I've also recently learned of Japandi and have been adding touches of it to my already scandi place. Its gorgeous.
That was a fantastic video. Had no idea about Japandi but I love it. Thanks
How interesting. I like this style for a kitchen or bathroom or dining room. However, I like something much more cozy/colorful & comfy for a living room.
That makes sense. In areas that are consider the dirtiest you'd want something that makes you feel clean and not clutterered.
great explaination. my favorite. I like more Scandi with a few zen element. Like you explain different style. Make people discover themselves! I like minimalist idea but not into minimal style. Now I understand why. Thanks Nick!
As a dane, I loved that you brought in the meaning of hygge. So cute 🥰🥰
Fellow Canuck here! 🇨🇦. Great video, I love this design style and have saved this video for future reference 😁
Yay more Canadians! 🇨🇦
@@Nick_Lewis and another Vancouverite!
What a great video! Thank you for taking the time to make this and share it. I loved learning about Japan’s And I just love your personality.
I just found you and i'm.... like in love. This was so perfect and exactly as helpful as it needed to be. You're a great teacher!
I love how simple and classic it is
It ticks all my favourite boxes. ✔️ Natural Materials ✔️ Simple Furniture ✔️Quality Focussed ✔️Comfortable
I like the Wabi-Sabi part...日本人の誇り。こんなインテリアにしてみたい♪
I love this one. I was thinking "I wish he knew about Muji" and BAM! Muji
I've been fascinated with this style but didn't know the term, thank you. when I get a home I'll definitely use this style
Oh awesome!
Thank you so much for this video . I now know my style ! Also , your voice is so calming !
This video helped me identify what I was looking to do in my new place. I kept searching in Scandinavian design concepts, while close not what I was looking for.
for unique handemade amd uneven ceramics i also loooove studio arhoj from denmark 🙌🏻 fits perfectly with scandi obviously, but also with japandi. especially their „edo“ series 😍
Hey Nick!! 100K subscribers!! How awesome - you are exploding here on RUclips!! Congrats!! So well deserved.
Beautiful! I would love to see a Scandi-California Coastal how to video. I am finding the Scandinavian design is pulling me in but I also am drawn to a very subtle beach design. I am not sure how to pull a blue ( love turquoise but am thinking navy might be a better color for this mix) into a Scandinavian living room but would love to try.
japandi fusion mixed with MCM and pops of art deco is a lot of fun if tastefully done
Thank you Nick for your wonderful videos! I’ve just started educating myself in interior design and I’ve been binge watching you!!! I can’t wait to apply what I have learnt ☺️
I'm over the Japandi Scandi moon with this segment. 💞
I love these deep dives. Thanks for doing this series. Can't wait to see which style you do next -- would love to have better understanding of the transitional look.
More to come! Thanks for watching!
A very good explanation, finally i understand the style... 👍 thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
