🎉 Happy birthday to Spike Lee. 3 20 I had to come correct for this. When I found this video, it was perfect. We thank you for your mirror of us in your work. We also thank you for never allowing us to sleep on ourselves. Have a blessed day ❤
This movie was 1 of Spike Lee's best film's!! Yes we all need to wake-up and stay awakening as our world is in constant chaos!! Stay focus on what's important to you and your life!!🙏🏽💎🙏🏽
This film came out in 1988. 31 years later in 2019 and we still sleeping on this. We seriously need to wake up for real for real yo. Let’s see what The Roaring 2020s and beyond has in store for us. 🙏🏾
I'm black born and raised in South Africa. My wish is for black Americans to apply for citizenship in developing African countries. My dream is that every black child finds his way back home to Africa. living in America is a form of sleep. We need Americans black Americans to open black-owned businesses this side. do you know how rich you would when blacks are the majority. Africa is not poor Europe and America just control currency but we are not poor. come to Africa brother
What I hate about how corporate liberals and the right use woke today is that it's now a dog whistle for oppressive and inhumane shit. The term has been used in the black community well before Spike Lee used it in film. All it meant was be aware, pay attention and get knowledgeable. Today, the right and corporate liberals use it to depress the idea of challenging elite institutions or to stifle challenges against racism and bigotry.
I went to the theater 3 times to see this movie plus bought the DVD. After 30 years I finally have figured out what Spike Lee was trying to accomplish. Spike pitted the Indigenous character against the Pan Afrikan character and he made the Pan Afrikan into the hero. This movie was released in 1988 which was the same year that Jesse Jackson coined the term "Afrikan American". The opening credits featured the famous slave ship picture which was a propaganda drawing produced by a British abolitionist Movement in 1808. The "Wake Up" ending sums up Spike`s message: He is asking us to wake up to the Pan Afrikan Movement! The movie is actually putting us to sleep while claiming to wake up us! Brilliant anti-propaganda, propaganda! You have to use reverse logic to grasp the message to get the real truth!!! Black to the Future!!
@stan orr - I have to rewatch this just because of this comment 🙏🏽👊🏽 I’ve learned so much more recently about the truth of our indigenous heritage and history and am essentially relearning and rewitnessing everything through that lens/info. Ty for ur comment 🙏🏽
@sano1062 Is there a way to get in touch with you? I am Amy Tarsis (F’ book). Thank you and Gd Bless You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only the truth can wake you up, which has to be searched with sincerity, but Spike Lee did only what he was allowed to which could be considered partly his best
Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, wrote the best music for his film....its not even close. Sad they parted working together over creative and other differences. Mr. Lee's music writing was and still is needed in Hollywood films.
We have to wake up and work together as a people and stop the light skinned, dark skinned battle because that is putting us to sleep. United we stand and divided we fall. We have to start loving ourselves again. Black is beautiful and we come in all shades. Lets stick together! We have been divided since slavery and that was by design. #powerinnumbers
The track is One Little Acorn composed by Terence Blanchard. It was featured on the soundtrack as well. I like the version they played when Dap was in the room with the guys after meeting with President McPherson best.
Wake up means a true message to not just Black people its all people of Color and Life also too no matter what young folks old and elderly folks disabled folks message meaning stop hurting and stop killing and stop rejecting and also stop putting folks of all color down look at today's Generation now
School Daze was a good movie in 1988 and it's show's African Americans what HBCU means and also when I 10yrs old first time watching it I didn't understand it but Now That I'm older but I realized to seemed to the New Generation of African Americans now Black Folks putting Black Folks now but It's need to stop now
All of the lazy right wing talking heads need to watch this movie and others like it from the era. Then for extra credit listen to Brenda's Got A Baby by 2Pac, Wake Up by Brand Nubian and songs like that. Absorb it all and then come back and tell us how the way they use "woke" relates to any of this. Those lames need to quit disrespecting our culture for their nonsense talking points.
