Ive seen this film a million times. I love it. But everytime i get to the end i think i really understand it. And i think about whatever craziness is going on in the world right now, and i realize I don't. And i may be a white man but it doesn't matter. This movie is meant as a wake up call to the black community, but its a wake up call to everyone. Look at the nonsense we let divide us. And i still think the best acting in the whole movie is the look on Julians face . Like he finally is waking up. Its subtle but so so powerful
Especially the last part of your comment I totally agree with. This world is sooo divided now and we ALL need to WAKE DA HELL up & truly see what is around us!
I think about this scene a lot ! As a black man and a college student, I still see the issues this movie addressed over 30 years ago today in my generation of black people and college kids ! Hopefully one day we can all unite and as Laurence said, “WAKE UP”!
I actually used this movie when I was a member of a Percy Jackson podcast to give the host a better understanding as to why some demigods joined the titans army
Spike's brother died while pleading. He wanted to make this movie to tell our people to stop with the pledging, they are basically gangs. ⏰ Brilliant film, much more than entertainment. Julian owes Jane an apology PERIOD. He manipulated her into sleeping with Half Pint. Poor thing was weak and he took advantage of that just so he could break up with her. What a loser and a coward. ⏰
1) Spike Lee said “a brother,” not his brother. 2) They’re basically like gangs, except that 2020 saw a historic increase of 2,429 Black Americans for a historic total of 9,913 Black American homicide victims in 365 days. That’s an average of 27 a day. 2020 also saw a 25% increase in Black deaths caused by vehicular accidents, a benefit of the Black privilege cultivated to commit crime. People like Spike Lee scapegoat and profit. Man made a film called Chiraq and cast Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, and Sam Jackson in it. Spike Lee is the greatest evidence that your race means nothing towards your knowledge. This man has made so many tone deaf films that completely miss the mark that it’s truly remarkable. Do The Right Thing is a great film, but then he ends it with two quotes that completely contradict each other from MLK Jr. and Malcolm X. Spike Lee cares more about dressing like an idiot than Black children being shot to death, you think the man gives one damn about the historic devaluing of Black Life that BLM brought about? Check out Glenn Loury and John McWhorter if you want examples of brilliant Black American men. The counter is Spike and his buddy Ibram X Kendi, whose birth name is actually Henry Rogers. I guess it’d be hard to profit off of race hustling as Mr. Rogers, the son of university educated and extremely successful people that guaranteed his post-secondary education long before he could conceptualize a disdain for his own name. If Black Americans want betterment, they’re eventually going to have to stop making excuses. They’re going to have to not defend outright criminals. Hell, Black Americans were defending Will Smith and saying White people shouldn’t speak on the altercation between two Black men 🤣 Y’all realize that there’s actually a long history in America of Black males not being charged for murder when killing another Black male…correct? That’s kind of what’s occurring now, except it’s the so called Liberals saying don’t speak on Black violence…”that’s our problem.” Turn your eyes from the outright animalistic savagery that seems inherent to use low lives, we just can’t help but assault each other, shoot each other, loot stores, beat women, and drive like maniacs while unlicensed! The KKK couldn’t have done a better job of sowing hatred while cultivating so much death and destruction…AND Y’ALL APPLAUDED IT! Spike Lee is really brilliant, and Black Lives Will NEVER Matter.

One of my favorite movie codas...would put it right up there with Jimmy Stewart left standing atop the Church belfry in Hitchcock's 'Vertigo.' And let's not forget the invaluable contribution Spike's father, noted jazz bassist Bill Lee, made to his son's early films. Lee's films lost an important musical ingredient when his father departed from the creative team.
I read somewhere the word woke was used in that context before this like as far back as the 1920s. I'm not sure though. One thing that I hate is how yt people have hijacked that word and use it incorrectly and ignorantly all the time.
It's not even thr first use, but it definitely made it loud and freaking clear what it was supposed to mean and helped it be known. If someone like Leadbelly could just say "Stay woke" in a song without describing the meaning, its got some serious history
I listen to this and think about the drug addiction and hustling lifestyle that is still being looked upon as a good thing in the hood or neighborhood.
