TWG Episode 3: SHE RUNS! SOUNDS LIKE HELL BUT SHE RUNS!

- After a little contortionist welding I manage to fix the exhaust enough to start the Camaro without enraging the neighbors! She runs, but it doesn't sound good
As many have suggested, pull the serpentine belt off so you can actually hear just the engine run. My bet is probably 90% of the sound you're hearing is the AC compressor.
After you get that done I would go through the typical stages of testing the engine from top to bottom. Do a compression test. Pull the upper plenum of the intake manifold off. Pull the valve covers off and check the rockers. There are a lot of things that you can do to test the engine to see if it's even necessary to pull it out of the car. Don't just jump the gun and assume you're going to have to pull the motor. Learn as much as you can about diagnosing an engine and you could save yourself a lot of money in the long run.
1.75 K subscribers after just 4 videos. Congratulations. That's quite the feat. Keep going, please. Very fun to watch and some of us are learning along with you..
Between the clicking sounds and chirping sound, I would take the belt off then run it again. Just to eliminate any noises from the belt accessories.
Agreed.
Sounds like lifter, pull the heads and check them before you yank the engine. Loving the videos!! Bringing back memories of my old camaros!
I hear you. I sold my last Camaro when our first child was born, I still miss it.
the one i miss the most is my 25th anniversary Camaro. White on White with that good ole' red interior. i wish i had that one back.
I had an ‘83 and also the ‘92 silver anniversary ed red w black stripes. Loved em both.
I still have my 91 z28
@@karlgrimm4428 nice!!😉
At least *some* of that noise is coming from one or more of the pulleys. Costs $0 and 5 minutes of time to pull the belt off the tensioner for 30 seconds and see if there's a difference. I love ruling things out by process of elimination.
I still have a lot of love for this generation Camaro, especially the IROC version.
Listening to it over the phone, it's difficult to tell. But I would take the belt off of the accessory drive pulleys. And see how much of the sound still persist. God bless
It's definitely hard to hear over a device but, in person, it's pretty undeniable. Bottom end noise that gets worse with RPM
Declan the optimist! “Well the backup lights work”…. Gotta. Love it.
Gotta have someone looking at the bright side!
Thank you for taking us along. I think most of us know how much exhaust system work really sucks! Good job!
It sounds like an old antique car in the early 1900’s hundreds
I have a 1991 Camaro RS. I love these cars. I bought mine brand new July of 1991. For your battery terminal issue, I used a coarse nut and bolt on each one. I use the nut as a lock nut to ensure a good connection plus the head of the bolt makes a good post for charging or jumping off the battery. Just my 2 cents. I look forward to seeing more progress on the Third Gen!
Enjoy the videos. Do what you want with the car and ignore some of the internet experts, someone really commented on a Fram oil filter? Scott at Vehcor has a whole meme about guys like that. Do not apologize for your welding or any lack of experience. Just do it with your son and have fun.
Cant wait to see some wetsanding ! feel like this is my own project..excited for you guys. n dont worry bout buggar welds, u can always grind them..😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
A grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't!
@@ThrowingWrenchesGarage YOU AND ME BOTH !!!!
Such a great channel ❤ I felt like I was laying on the ground watching you weld it was great camera work 👍
Thank you! So glad you’re enjoying it. We’re having fun making it!
Check your distributor and timing. Remove the serpentine belt to rule out accessories.
Sounds like a valve job, try the marvels mystery oil trick, fill it up with marvels and see what that does. The rest sounds like pulleys, belts and accessories. Tune it up and go from there. Probably a valve job, maybe lifters
I have a 90 iroc L98 g92 car.i had to put in a mini starter cause of heat soak.the mini starter did the trick, and now the car starts after a long drive no more waiting for it to cool down .Keep up the good work .
I'm digging the content so far, although....seeing your Chevelle sitting there with no cover on it while you grind and work around it is killing me! Lol.
Yeah she sounds like she's hammering id definitely pull it out and do a simple rebuild on her.. Nice welding job there was nothing wrong with that and i love your sons name its unique and awesomene!!! I do have hubdreds of small third gen parts especially clips retainers bolts and interior parts ill donate anything you need for your son if i have it.. It took me 5 years to restore my third gen camaro and build the nitrious engine i wanted so i have tons of parts and if he needs them just let me know what you need and if i have it ill mail it to you free of charge
Thanks! Thaf’s very generous of you to offer! When we start putting things together instead of taking them apart we might need you!
Talking from experience, you should definitely pull off the front bumper when pulling the engine. It gives you almost a foot of room, which you’ll definitely need if you’re using a cherry picker. Good luck on the rebuild guys!
Solid tip! Thanks
@@ThrowingWrenchesGarage My pleasure! I love watching you two work together, and I love seeing other young guys getting into older cars!
Dump a can of Marvel Mystery Oil into the crankcase. Or a bottle of Berryman's. Kinda sounds like valvetrain to me. Before you pull the engine you should drop the pan and check the crank and rod bearings after adjusting the valves. Good luck!
Loving this car and project.
Sounds like everything is knocking! Someone rode that poor car hard!
It sounds like something is making noise as it's rotating. I would remove the serpentine belt and run the engine again. There is a possibility that one of the following; smog pump, p/s pump, a/c compressor, water pump, alternator is locked up or the bearings are bad. The car will start and run on off the battery alone for at least 1/2 hour. The glitter in the oil pan and filter may have come from the factory timing chain hitting the timing chain cover and gouging out metal as its rubbing and rotating> ?
Keep the videos coming.
The noise definitely sounds like worn or spun bearings, camshaft is probably worn-out/rounded, and the valve lifters sounded like they were clicking or ticking. These are usually the top three reason for shavings in the oil in Third Gen. Camaro 305 small block. The crankshaft is probably starved for oil or has a plugged channel which why former owner overfilled it. On the plus side, it is a great opportunity for Declan to learn...a little at a time and Chevrolet is relatively straight forward, easy, affordable to work on. Unlike European cars, you'll never lack parts or suppliers. Subscribed.
Looks like she's got some fairly decent speakers in the car. When you get to the audio system. I gutted the Bose crap in my 03 Corvette. I replaced the speakers with polypropylene cone Kenwoods. I would highly recommend them in the Camaro. They sound good and can take a beating. With the engine. At least you're pulling it from a Camaro and not say... a Mercedes. Ez pz
Great project! I’ve been working on an 84 z28 for a few years now. I hope to be doing something like this with my son when he reaches this age.
I would look into all the easy engine stuff before committing to pulling it out. Could you perhaps on the next video tell us where your experience is, like what you do for work? You say you don't know what you're doing, but it seems like you're doing alright to me!
I cant believe you didn't do the patented Derek Bieri fire test when you hooked up the battery ! LOL
Yeah it sounds rough but hey you guys scored you cannot find them like that anymore . It's most likely turned a bearing but I would make sure that the torque converter is tight and the flex plate is not cracked or shattered. To me it does sound like it's got some noise coming from the flexplate. You don't have anything to lose by checking that's for sure. I've seen those flexplates crack where the 6 bolts fasten them to the crankshaft. If you pull the converter bolts out of it and slide it back as far as you can you might be able to see up in there possibly if not I would get one of those camera attachments that go on your phone with a 90° camera on it so you can see what it looks like
I am no expert, but may be a flexible pipe could’ve been used to replace the missing section. Great video.
Been loving the Channel keep going
Just friendly advice but if you do pull it mark and label every line, hose, etc. for making the install process smoother. Hopefully you don't have to but almost seems like that's the road it's headed down. Plus think of all that content for new subscribers 😉
Your welding is good. With welding the more you weld and fabricate and repair stuff the better you get at it. I would use 4 jack stands and get the entire car off the ground as high as possible.
..and you might as well put a kit in the transmission if your pulling the motor. Its not much more work. I put one in my 89 iroc and it was so much more crisp. And I had the 350 version
100% spun rod bearing
Pull it and rebuild it love the videos
As many others have said, I would start with the serpentine belt because it doesn’t sound internal sounds more like an exhaust leak to me maybe the smog system if there is one or a blown exhaust gasket, I would also check the spark plugs One of them may be loose.
Compression test would be good before pulling it.
Great videos keep it up
Sounds like timing chain is slapping, may be why it back fired also.Definitely lifter tick also.may have collapsed lifters, the 350s love to do that.🙂
I wouldn’t have saved that old exhaust system Noooo way i would have taken it somewhere and had stainless steel tubing with flow master 10’s put on it just behind the rear axle and wake that baby up i have them on my Challenger Hemi and my Z28 and they roar like a beast I like it fast and loud and I would put sound deadening in the interior before you put carpet in it
Pull the belt to isolate the engine noises.
It sounds like a piston rod knocking.
Check the lifters, then pull the heads..could be something bent or broken
Hooker makes (or at least they used to) headers that are a direct bolt-in. I had them on our 85, and they were fantastic.
You guys should invest in building some car cribs.
Eh, can’t really hear good compared to being there in person but, I would pull the serpentine belt off and have a listen and another problem area with those Z’s is the flex plate. The plate cracks around the bolt holes and sounds like bottom end is demolished? Someone cut that exhaust for a reason?? Hard to believe that 305 is toast? Although, shit happens.
Sounds like a rebuild
Noisy water pump bearing. I don't hear any bottom end noises. Just top end. Lifter/Valvetrain noise, it sounds like. To fast to be bottom end. Try the ol' vacuum hose stethoscope trick. If you yank the motor just save it in plastic wrap and ls swap it!
Chevrolet offered the IROC-Z trim model of the Z/28 from 1985 to 1990, its badge nodding to the International Race of Champions series that sprang from the brain of Roger Penske to become a fixture on ABC's Wide World of Sports. So the "Z" stands for Z-28 so you were correct in your original statement. Don't listen to all the keyboard warriors out there.
Before you pull the whole engine run some detergent oil though the engine with some Rislone and Lucas oil mixed in. You might just have a stuck hydraulic lifter, I had this happen in my Camaro years ago. I ran that thought it and then used Royal Purple and the lifter noise went away.
20:14 Floor It Dude! Lololol
Its a 305, there junk. Swap it put for a blueprint 350. I'd take it down the road and check all the gears before pulling the motor.
Remove the belt and try again just out of curiosity, BUT as soon as I heard this engine run I was immediately thinking it has spun the main bearings and will for sure need a rebuild. I can hear the exhaust and A/C making noise as well but this is very familiar to me. I've owned 2 of these cars and one of them had this same result. My opinion is to get a remanufactured engine and give that one as a core, or find a good donor car with a good engine if funds are an issue. Although a sad situation, your son will definitely learn a lot.
I was wrong from the last video because I thought i seen through the engine hood flairs and thought someone had cut them out and was concerned about rain getting in them but it’s fine
Sounds like cam and lifters
Love the channel but you could have went to your local parts store for battery bolts #My2Cents
Sounds like a lifter problem sticking try putting a little kerosene in with the oil to lessen them
Hope it's not a rod bearing, maybe a lifter collapsed but I'd tinker with it a bit before pulling the engine.
Sounds like lifters and pullys
IS THAT WATER PUMP OR TIMING CHAINE OUR A LAZY LIFTER OR TWO
Take the belt off then see what it sound like.
PULL IT OUT ITS DONE
My friend welding would've been the last thing on my mind I'd put that piece back in place and taped it close as best as I could and then attended to the engine noise everything should operate off of that engine and then worry about the exhaust won't you find out whether you need to get a short block or not just saying By The Way I'm highly Jealous that's a Gorgeous Iroc z 😎
I had a welder but I didn’t have muffler tape. Believe it or not, the welding was the lazy way out! I only repaired it to make it easier to hear the engine noise and to avoid pissing off neighbors. It definitely was not a “repair”
@@ThrowingWrenchesGarage However you make it work ,let it work. You and your son enjoy the project truly you guys look very HAPPY 😊 keep us posted Thanks 😎
I would get the underneath blasted
Be a good chance to clean the engine bay while that motor is out.
Lifters and valves
You're grinding near that chevelle and not covering it up ... that's a rookie mistake my good man
Someday I’ll do a close up video on the Chevelle’s paint and you’ll know why I don’t sweat it too much 😜
oh, those mud flaps have got to go
Yep but it was such a period correct thing. Like having the LeBra for the nose.
@@jeffs4690 at this point I'd wrap the nose and the rocker-panels if I was worried about scuffing them, that bra probably traps more heat too besides scratching the paint
Agreed they are horrible on the paint. Had a few on my late 1980s TAs back in the day. By the same right if you had front end scratches, paint peeling or worse they could hide the damage. As far as heat that wasn't a problem with having one that I ever recall. The LeBra was the higher end brand to have and had ventilation built in if needed for other models. Wasn't necessary on a TA though. You did get individual headlight covers for the flip up headlights that usually rubbed and came off eventually.
Don’t sit and waste your time pull the engine bust it down see what’s up . Get the heads reworked , see what’s up with the block crank and bearings. Stay with a stock grind cam you can thank me later!
Just clamp it for now
Sounded like a pulley how was oil pressure?
Around 50lbs if the gauge can be trusted but that’s with a heavy weight oil with additives and we didn’t run it long enough to warm up. The rattle is awful. There’s definitely other noises in there but the sound of connecting rods rattling is pretty obvious in person
did we check or even change oil??????
We did in the previous video here: IROC Z28 DEEP CLEANING AND SCARY OIL!

Enjoying the father son project. Please consider losing the music altogether. I know it’s tempting to think it adds entertainment value but it’s just distracting and bit hokey.
Hi Friend, Your vids are awesome! This is Alloyworks! We specialize in the production of automotive radiators, heat exchangers, and cooling system components. We're wondering if we could collaborate. Would you like to put our products to the test and review them on your channel?
You can message us at tom@throwingwrenchesgarage.com
Not interesting your son should be committed his project car he still a kid yes oh well
throw that auto in the trash and manual swap it
Sounds like rod bearings I had 86 sounded same
From the oil change last video, you have either a spun bearing on the crank or a cam bearing is wiped out... It now comes down to your budget, to rebuild or replace with a 350, you should be able to find a good motor on marketplace for a decent price... I wouldn't go back with a 305.. Back in the 90's when I had my 3rd gen I swapped the tired 350 tpi with a build 383 stroker from a monte carlo that a guy crash out running the cops... I didn't have any of the build spec's of the internals but I tell that engine had some hp's behind it, the car got stolen and the guy was toying with a detective going down the highway and it turned into a hot pursuit and they caught him with spike strips and he ditched the car tearing the front end up.. Sorry I got caught up in the moment there lol... Anyways good luck with pulling the engine..
Trade it in for a TESLA and be done with it.
the IROC isn't a pile of junk like a tesla is, and it won't burn down the house like a tesla, so you can have one
😂 hysterical reply , dumb but funny
@@-DA3 yea all those fires and skyrocketing insurance for a car that can't go any further than a golf ball before it needs a recharge
then there's the cold that kills the battery, yea dumb as can be, the ev scam is coming to a crashing burning end literally
