I've been enjoying the Prof's video lectures and papers ever since I read his recent translation of "Job". Amazing stuff that really ties into mysticism of all cultures. The whole balancing of "civilized" vs "natural" elements of humanity is the same problem we struggle with today! In Hebrew the word "arum" is used both for the serpent being the most "clever" of the animals and for the humans being "naked". The pun underscores the notion that at this point in the story, the serpent and humans are on the same level: the serpent is upright, can speak and reason, is clever; the humans, like all the other animals, are naked. In the course of the story, the humans will become more human (wearing clothes, having to work for a living, suffering the pain of childbirth) and the serpent will become like other animals: no longer speaking, crawling on the ground. The story deals with the transformation of the first humans to civilized humans, further distinguished from the other animals.
