  • What makes conspiracy theories so appealing? Why don’t humans always use wealth and technology in ways that benefit humanity? And why is the ‘New Right’ turning on conservative traditions?
Watch MSNBC’s Ari Melber speaking with ‘Sapiens’ author Yuval Noah Harari about a huge array of topics in this extensive conversation, including: recent AI developments, global political trends, how history is written and interpreted, storytelling and ‘fictions’ as a force in society, the existence and meaning of God, the enduring impact of America’s ‘founding fathers’, Harari’s views of his own intellectual reach and criticism of his ideas. Recorded for MSNBC on November 14th, 2023.

What impressed me about Mr. Harari is his ability to keep his clarity of observation and not allow the thought process be corrupted by the information he consumes.
He always manages to stay grounded in basic humanity.

Soul is the subtle body which inhabits every sentient being. Humans have the widest individual evolutionary variance within species. In the circumstances of existence, in capacities and inclinations, in personality and destiny. In Indian philosophical traditions including Buddhism, the subtle body could just as well be involuted into one of a lower species.

A postmodern view of religion acknowledges that religion has nothing to do with scientific fact. It is rather a cumulative cultural product of people. But people are the receivers of a religious tradition that gives us cultural, moral, and ethical orientation in our lives. The problems with religion in our contemporary society happen when people equate religion in the same level with science and fact. Religion then becomes fundamentalist, literal, and highly destructive to its followers and others.

Yuval brilliantly frames human history and the implications of our decisions that we are experiencing today. His prediction on the exploding "useless class" are coming to life in our cities across the country.

I love listening to Yuval. The depth and sheer novelty of his thought is immense and powerful. However, when it comes to AI, from my own personal perspective, I think he gives it way too much credit. Not only is AI not conscious, it is not, at least as of this writing, intelligent. This subject is admittedly a rabbit hole so, briefly, I think Yuval would benefit greatly from pursuing the full spectrum of opinions about AI.

I guess it would depend on how one defines "intelligence". AI could be considered "intelligent", but definitely not conscious or sentient.

No consciousness at all, but a simulation of intelligence. Still valuable...things could change radically in the next 5, 10, 20 years.

Excellent Explainations from Y N Harari IMHO outstanding interview. History as change rather than traditional folky story approah we learn as kids is refreshing. And more workable approah for our times and challwnges. Brillant insight. Big Thank You for that. Small point from me. The distinction on the different perspective of what is " soul" for jews and catholics LOL Remember ~ recall it was Telliard De Chardin who posited that maybe even rocks had a primative soul or spirit nature. In this perspective of course what evolved latter also known as plants and anaimals etc also have an intangible soul nature as well. Chardin career as respected geologist is accepted As respected Jesuit Thelogian very much less respected and accepted (especially in Catholic church of the 20th century) Yeah the history or fictions we invent for ourselves can be improved I agree.
