Yuval Noah Harari: 'There is a battle for the soul of the Israeli nation'

- Yuval Noah Harari has spoken to Sky News about his fears for the future of Israel.
The Sapiens author told Yalda Hakim he believes the biggest threat to his country comes not from Hamas, Hezbollah or Iran, but from the battle between Israelis for the "soul of the nation".
He said: "Personally, I fear most for really the soul of my country, of my nation in Israel at the moment.
"There is really a battle for the soul of the Israeli nation between patriotism on the one side and ideals of Jewish supremacy on the other side."

Why do people say they don’t know what Israel or Netanyahu’s goal is? Are they being willfully ignorant or in denial?
what is their goal?
I think it's deception...the goals have always been clearly stated yet they deny they're pursuing them.
Yes, intellectuals are "wilfully in denial" of the facts they see. Their answers are not without interest, self, and racial interest.
💯💯💯 it’s a great deception ....

though his background is history, it's not what made him famous.
Hes a pop historian whos ideas were never that profound and makes claims with little to no evidence. His explanation of rights where they come from shows a willful lack of understanding of concepts. He is just so concrete bound.
That means Avi Shlaim is not a historian nor Benny Morris or that communist Ilan paper. However Tauber is ignored because he shows there was no massacre in Dir Yasmin and the so called Nakba was self inflicted catastrophe by people who scared themselves into exile

First, when I read "Sapiens," I thought of Harari as a living person with feelings, thoughts, a heart, and soul. Now, when he tries to justify a genocide, I realized that the Harari I respected is just a "story" i told myself. He is not willing to accept that Israel is colonial project of western imperial powers and in order to sustain it, they will go to any length.
Now don’t forget that Netanyahu presented a greater Israel map in September without Gaza and West Bank. So no. It’s not just Hamas. That is disingenuous. Also Israel have never presented a fair peace deal to the Palestinians. Ever.

It was not until hearing him talking about Palestine after Oct’7th did I re-reflect on his book and realized that his book is rather a popular writing than a serious history research. Pity.
Yes, indeed, Mr. Harare books are popular writing w/o pretending to be scientific monographs - many more ppl may understand what his books are saying.
Sources? Where is it historically, factually wrong?
His writings have always been like that, but I enjoy his storytelling. He is more a historical philosopher than a historian.
yes, he is a popular writer not a serious researcher. Any serious researcher would say, there are no Palestinians people. In fact between 1904 and 1947 950K Arabs immigrated to the land of Israel. A Palestinians Arab identity did not exist until 1964. But this would be counterproductive to the narrow 1990s Leftist Israeli "narrative" which they tried to separate the Jewish identity of the state to a more radical secular, partial marxist state. For this they needed to shed the biblical connection to the land of the Israeli identity which blew up in their face as they put all their capital on the PLO's supposed effort to suppress the many other terrorist groups such as Hamas (religious rather than national) support among the "riffraff." This blew up in 2001 which ironically also saw the use of rocket fire on Israeli civilians from Gaza. Oct 7th seemed to have relegated the two-state farce back to the fringe of the fringe of Israeli public as it was before 1993.
Also israel has banned dna tests, i wonder why🤔
Amazing the lack of empathy expressed for ordinary families in Gaza, meanwhile.
Does Hamas show any empathy to the families in Gaza ?

The Olso Accords were not progress for the people in the West Bank, though many in the Palestinian Authority have done well out of it financially.
Both sides have messed up badly. Bad Palestinian leadership , Netanyahu and others definitely moved the Israel to a right wing used to a status quo comfy with the occupation.

There are many concepts of justice that both sides agree on, from tenets of their Abrahamic religions, to the Genocide Convention. Harari is disingenuous to say that it is very hard for different sides to agree on what is justice
There may be some, but the most important ones are the direct opposites. Therefore the only way will be focusing on peace, and only looking forward for a coexistence.

He says he’s worried about soul of Israel but he never condemned brutality imposed by Israeli government, settlers and army, not before October 7 not after. So he is part Israeli soft military.
Definitely, he talks like a spy
Super odd for someone who doesn't believe in the divine to be worried about the soul.
The concept of a soul is not strictly a religious idea. It predates organized religion all together.
The world can see this genocide being committed in Gaza
Yuval is a know it all. He chimes in on every topic like he is an expert in everything
But he has laid out his plans from the river to the sea at the UN(???)
What soul?
Stop the genocide.
Hamas did the genocide
Agree - what soul? Israeli barbarism is like something from the 12th century, its just not appropriate in 2024
@@sarite1652I think it’s not a good idea to have musical festival 5 km away from concentration camp.
@sarite1652 perhaps killing 1200 people is a massacre not a genocide. Not to make this a technicality, but, for example “Bloody Sunday” in Ireland wasn’t a genocide… a massacre makes the front page of the news. It’s a way of getting eyeballs… a publicity stunt 🤷🏽♂️ genocide doesn’t always make the headlines. The horror of Auschwitz was a secret until after the war ended. The same was true for the Rwandan genocide (890 thousand killed in 28 days with machetes and zero news coverage).

Coming from a Jewish background, Harari still hold unconscious biases.

Incorrect. In this sense, your argument is that he comes from a Zionist background. To be Jewish and to be Zionist are two very different things, arguably incompatible…
The mental flexibility, the uncertainty, the permanent stress of anticipating the waves of change, the necessity to keep being relevant has been reality in the corporate workd for the least 30 years. It is not the future, it is the present. I am the living example of it. Today, I beat and teach the AI. But I am over 60. Suddenly everything is more of an effort. What happens when we meet the point of rupture ?
Yuval, the stress comes from thinking about the future. Here and there is the only solution. Here and there, the AI makes a lot of mistakes. Let it come, it will make me look good and intelligent.
The individual soul is beyond location identity
What soul? Those representing the government already lost it and sadly, for the younger generation of Israelis, they have spent the majority of their lives under said right wing government to the point that they themselves have already been indoctrinated to the same disregard for Palestinians and the notion of peace between them. They've already lost it.
The soul????
he is the monster ....
The skills and qualities to develop for the future: moral judgement, critical and independent thinking, courage, ability to live with uncertainty while still building something of human value.
History started on 7 Oct 2023 or nth February 2022 depending whether he's talking about Russia or Israel. Otherwise it started 30,000 years ago when we had to be sure there were no Tigers under the bed ?
I don't think I have time for this.
What the 25 year old US Air serviceman Aaron Bushnell said before his self-immolation ‘’My name is Aaron Bushnell, I am an active duty member of the US airforce and will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m in an extreme act of Protest, but compared to what the people in Palestine are experiencing at the hands of their colonisers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided is normal’’
This scene had me weeping for hours after I saw him set himself alight and died afew hours later. Please watch this footage on RUclips
It’s very shameful that most of the US media has decided not to post this incident
The US and other Western mainstream media is Zionist corporate funded, as part of the Zionist Propaganda Machine- HASBARA. "hasbara targets diplomats, politicians, business leaders. celebrities and the public through mass media and numerous other institutions, both public and privately funded". So that's where some or our taxes are going and it's no wonder that we do not have enough funds to tackle our socio-economic issues".
I couldn’t stop laughing.

I feel bad for any mentally unstable person who decides to kill themselves. But I'm certainly not going to make decisions for a country based on what someone who isn't right in their right mind says right before they kill themselves.
Almost everything he said before he killed himself was incorrect. Just because it's sad he killed himself, doesn't mean that we should follow what he said.
If he said Biden is stealing everyone's left sock and then killed himself, should we take Biden to court for it?

And, more basically, to read, write & express oneself effectively as a citizen of Earth, to do which one needs to know some history, geography, biology, ecology & literature, within a framework of civics, government & social science.
The American scenario of polarization to the point of demonisation of political opponents, of obstructionism over compromise to solve problems, risking democracy & social order, reflects a game like, or tribal approach to civilisation; understanding of how societies function, what is important to their sustenance: this knowledge needs to be renewed.
Individualism, tribalism, selfishness - these can not be the new gods, for they lead only to the medieval past!
Glorification of the past, via grand national myths or historical revisionism is useless, dangerous - justice is a backward looking concept; the focus must be on the future, how to make it better, fairer, more sustainable - ecologically & socially.
Take stock of what is, plan to get to a better place, act, evaluate honestly, reformulate etc.
Forget about the past, it can't be fixed, be just, fair & reasonable about the future.
Ibn khaldoun said nations are built on justice, no justice no lasting nations...very simple very true
What has this dude said about his people and government when they keep committing horrible crimes against innocent Palestinians?

@@yonimaor1005 I made way too many to reach this conclusion… for instance, it’s super ahistorical to link the current conflict to Iran, as if history doesn’t tell us that it started long before the Islamic revolution! And in fact Iran has nothing to do with the current events and that they fundamentally disagree with what happened… this is just a simple example! There are way too many others
