    Memphis, thank you for doing such a fine job with your videos on making this sewing machine cabinet. I've watched MM 108 and 109 and learned a lot. All my best, sir!

      Thanks, I know what you mean, but I'm not a carpenter. I hold the various trades in high regard, and I would never claim to be any of them. Rather, I'm a hobbyist woodworker that likes to do lots of different kinds of projects. Thanks for the comment and the view.

    I just found your video today and I am so happy about it. My husband said that he will have our Priest build one for me. Our Priest do wood work and he told me to look for pictures of designs so he can plan on it. Your video will be a great help on this upcoming project.
    If I could I wanted to have a big one like this but I think I need to be contented to a sewing table without the cabinets so it is not too taxing for our Priest. I don’t even know if I should get the airlift mechanism since I have 2 sewing machines that will be using the table...arggg... :)
    I read all the comments and your replies, I wish there are a lot of hobbyist like you ^_^.
    Thanks for this great video!

      Thanks for the kind words, and I hope your project turns out well. Two sewing machines!!!! You sound like a professional. You are right in a way about the hobbyist part. Having such a cabinet made by a professional would be prohibitively expensive. However, finding a hobbyist, who is doing woodworking for fun anyway works out for everyone. Again, thanks for watching and commenting.
      My next video comes out tomorrow at 8 AM eastern, and I hope to see you there.

    This is a great build project and I watched Part 2 before coming back here to comment and give you a thumbs up. However, I have a question about your design. I noticed you centered the machine opening and lift in the foot well. I've used over a dozen sewing machines in cabinets, some with lifts and the rest with hinged bases that drop down. In each case, the machine is offset to the right of the user, with the presser foot and needle centered on the user.
    The photo you used as the basis for your project appears to be a mirror image, but it is clear that the lift and opening are offset (to the left in that image). This matches my experience as a user, not as a builder.

    I like your version of the sewing cabinet better than the one in the picture both for looks and functionality. The one in the photo uses the doors to hold up the leafs, which would make it impossible for somebody to sit comfortably in a chair and have their legs underneath the leafs. Your slide out mechanism to hold up the leafs leave plenty of room to sit comfortably with legs in front. Of course I've never used a sewing machine in my life and don't plan to, but that's my point of view. Wow, you sure have lots of views on this one. Very nice!

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад

      The views, I think, are fake. I hired an outfit to "promote" this video, as I thought it might have some general appeal. RUclips promoted my 70 feet of fence video for some reason, so I figured why not give it a try on this video, as I thought this video was better. But I checked it out, and all the views, over 5000 so far are all from the Netherlands. Notice I got plenty of likes, but no comments from these "so called" viewers. I can only hope that RUclips doesn't hold this against me, as they were starting to like me and promote my stuff.
      I broke my rule here of copying things exactly, as the design was really based on the desires of my friend, and clearly those "Door supports" were a bad idea. Actually, me and my friend hashed out the design for two days, based on her needs and several "google" pictures. Frankly, I only showed the picture at all because I had no prototype. In 2 of 2 I actually make some serious changes to the slide-out design, and when you see those changes it will become clear why.
      On grid, did you ever notice that I always reply back with longer comments than your original? It's because, unlike those fake 5000 views I paid for, you and several others are the real Memphis Monday family. Real people, doing real things, and I like that.
      Thanks again for watching and commenting. I say it every week, but I really do value and look forward to your input.

      I was wondering about all the views. Hopefully one day you'll actually have that many. Of course once you get that many views all the trolls will come along with it. I don't know if I mentioned this before but your videos are the only ones I comment on regularly because the comments are nice and tame and troll free. It seems like before when I did comment quite a bit on lots of videos, most of the replies were from trolls and I got tired of wasting so much time responding. It might surprise you to know that Troy and I are still friends and he understands why I don't comment on his videos or read the comments either. Sometimes my replies are late because I have to log in to YT on the computer to comment. The TV app doesn't show comments and doesn't accept them either, but I sure like watching videos on a wide screen TV, even though this is a 27" monitor here. There's a guy here on YT who I watch regularly and he has a hydraulic work bench that he can lower to the ground for heavy objects, then raise it back up to normal height. I was thinking something like that might work out good for you. Anyway, talk about long comments! I'm looking forward to part 2 and I'm sure whatever changes you made will still look better than the prototype/picture. BTW, thanks for the videos and your nice replies to my comments.

      TR lost me when Joy went missing. I'm a dog-lover I guess, and I'm ate-up with it. As I told Hippie once, I stopped commenting on TR's channel as I was starting to feel like a troll, since now I know how hard it is to make videos and attract viewers. Interestingly, of the trolls I have had the last four years, few make videos themselves
      I just connect my TV to my computer with an HDMI cable, as I'm like you about watching videos on the TV. Fact is, I hardly watch cable TV, as I can get everything I watch right off the internet.
      I won't buy any fake views this week, unless the fake views from last week somehow trigger the RUclips algorithm to promote me (like they did with the 70 feet of fence video.)
      I'm liking that hydraulic work bench idea!!! Send me the URL if you think about it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • @PidasianHippie
    @PidasianHippie 7 лет назад +1

    First let me say, as someone who has done a lot of sewing in my life, that your friend will love that this is on wheels. It is very helpful to have your machine cabinet easily moved.
    The cabinet in the picture is awesome but your design should be much better. Your idea for the supports of the fold down tops is genius! I am sure that is a Memphis invention. This gives the user the ability to turn their chair around without hitting that cumbersome door! The lifting mechanism is totally unfamiliar to me and I can't imagine how long it took you to find it. It will be very interesting to see how it works. This "stretch" project is definitely one that I know you are more than capable of completing in usual Memphis style.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much for the kind words. Actually, the cabinet making wasn't real hard, as we have done so much of it. What was hard was that fact that my friend lives hundreds of miles away, in Indiana, and my only reference to her sewing machine was some measurements I took.
      "Your idea for the supports of the fold down tops is genius!" You did notice that I built a prototype to test my theory, and I learned from my mistakes. In video 2, I actually change the design of the fold-down supports a little. I bet you can figure out what changes I made.
      Always looking for those "stretch" projects, that I hope is what will make season 3 special. Remember, Star Trek only lasted 3 Seasons, so we may catch on and last for another 50 years.
      Again, thanks for the kind words, and get excited for 2 of 2, as it is pretty intense. PS, I've already delivered the sewing table to my friend, and she is quite happy with it.

    • @PidasianHippie
      @PidasianHippie 7 лет назад +1

      I can see that the distance apart would be a bit of a hindrance. Luckily, in this modern age we live in you could communicate with her quite easily. I bet you sent lots of pictures as you were working on it.
      Of course you built a prototype......It would not be a Memphis project if you didn't! Well, I am not sure about the changes, but I had wondered how you were going to build the stops for the supports and how you would pull them out.. Maybe you are going to do some kind of a fold out hinged mechanism??
      I hope this will catch on with these "stretch" projects. I did notice that this video has quite a bit more views than usual on a Sunday night. Maybe you are on to something. However, one reason may be that this could be a very popular project. Let's hope that Memphis Monday will outdo even Star Trek's success!
      I am very excited about part 2! I am happy to hear that she likes it. You should get her to take a picture or video of her using it and insert that at the end of the video.

      They are rather shy about videos I think. I took out my camera, and things go real quiet, real fast. I put it away, and things were okay. They are private, and I can dig it.
      You are real close on the braces. Problem was that the weight of the braces was completely on the top, so I put 45 degree bevels on the slide-outs so that the support is totally independant of the top. In the final edition, the braces work without the top installed. In part 2, I think it will be the first thing I detail.
      Numbers are way up. I think if I just make "Sewing cabinets" and "wooden fences" I'd be golden. But what I want to do is "everything," so that is what I will do, regardless of numbers. As long as you show up every week, I'm good.
      Again, thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

    • @PidasianHippie
      @PidasianHippie 7 лет назад

      I understand about the camera so will have to only imagine how it will look in use.
      I had wondered about a 45 degree support. It will be very interesting to see what you come up with. Whatever it is, it is a great addition for extra work space on this cabinet.
      It makes me very happy to see your numbers up. You deserve that more than anyone else I watch. You do fantastic work and take a lot of pride in the construction of your projects. You aren't going to get rid of me! I don't think I have told you that I am in the market for a small Class B RV(I know you don't think they are economical, but I want to do some extensive traveling and this is the way I want to go.) Even when I am traveling, you and a couple of others will be on my weekly lists to watch no matter what.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад

      Yep, you probably noticed from my videos that I'm a rather conventional and boring guy. Perhaps too logical; not enough vision.
      Fact is, I owned a motorhome, and that logical and boring guy thing kicked in, and ruined the motorhome adventure. After finding an RV campground, setting the thing up, and paying the RV campground rental, I realized that I could stay in the finest hotels about 1500 nights for the same price. Remember, the RV burns more gas, and you still have to rent a spot to park it. For me, drive a car with good gas mileage, and pick a nice place for around $100 per night, and you will beat the RV deal every time.
      However, who cares about practical!!!! If you have a peck of hard-drinking party animals to travel with, then maybe an RV is the best choice. Man, I hope you invite me along!!!

    4:30 "I have trouble working on the ground." Ha ha ha Only 18 year olds do not have trouble working on the ground. I am glad you said it out loud. I am glad you put it on a table. It would have been hard to watch otherwise. I use the expression, "it is uncivilized to work on the ground." I just think it is a low class, barbaric, lazy way to do things. I love the thought process on how you are doing this. From the detailed step by step process we can see how your plans come together. Thanks for letting us in on your secrets. Very well done. Good job as always. Lots of take-a-ways.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад +2

      I don't know about "uncivilized" all I know is I can't do it anymore. Remember those "good old days," when we were 18 and it didn't matter where the project was situated? Let me sit, or let me stand, but don't ask me to squat down on the ground for hours. Frankly, the "good enough" answer would tend to come too early in the process. Moreover, design decisions should not be based on the pain and discomfort experienced by an old guy. In short, the 20 minutes I spend building that low workbench saved me hours of work time, while, I'm guessing, improved the finished product.
      Next week is intense, as we turn this cabinet into a sewing cabinet. Make some real changes to the braces, install the lift mechanism, design and install the top, etc. etc. Hope to see you then.
      I remember you told me your age last week. You are the same age as my brother. Isn't it amazing that we can look at an age of 65 and count that as young? Perhaps it is instructive.
      Thanks again for watching (so closely) and commenting. It means a lot to me, and the whole Memphis Applegate team.

    • @ohhiguy
      @ohhiguy 7 лет назад

      "...design decisions should not be based on the pain and discomfort experienced...the 20 minutes... building...saved me hours of work time... improved the finished product." YOU said it better than I did. I only summarized by calling it "uncivilized... low class, barbaric, lazy way." You are correct. To rephrase with my words, design decisions need to be thought out with skill, experience, and production as a central roll.
      In my opinion, one of the things a civilized society needs is a productive mindset. Everything about your channel is an example of this and points to production vs consumption. If you spent as much time on consumption and entertainment (eat, drink and be merry,) you would have a much more popular and famous RUclips channel.
      Instead, you just consistently, and thoughtfully work right along producing, and make the world a better place. May your tribe increase. Thanks for the example.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад +3

      Yep, trying to jazz up my channel would come off as fake, even if I knew how to do it!! I don't golf or fish or garden or whatever else retired people do. So every day I get up and go to work, just like I've been doing for the last 50 years. But it's even better now, as I get to choose my work.

    • @ohhiguy
      @ohhiguy 7 лет назад

      I am guessing you know this: I have read several places over the years, that the average lifespan for men who retire in this country is 18 months. Some die sooner, some later. Not very good odds. We all leave a legacy, one way or another.
      You are choosing how you leave your legacy. How terrible is would be to have people bitterly hate you and can not wait till you die, so they can piss on your grave. Productivity plus "do unto others," goes a long way. Again, I am guessing this is not all new to you.
