  • Last week • Sewing Cabinet with Ma... we completed the cabinet part of the Sewing Machine Cabinet, and this week we finish the project by completing the top, the lifting mechanism, the last door, and the fold down tops
    I was advertising to a friend that I was looking for some interesting woodworking projects, and she suggested that she would like a sewing cabinet with mechanical lift. Starting with pictures in magazines and google, working together we sketched out what she wanted. Our design was a blend of several ideas, with measurements tailored to her sewing room and other furniture. Here are some of the design features:
    1. Three position machine lift.
    2. Sitting on eight wheels the heavy cabinet is easily moved
    3. Removable cabinet top
    4. Five 100 percent pullout drawers
    5. Oak drawer fronts, oak frame, and oak trim on 3/4 inch plywood
    6. Two fold down table top extensions.

    Well made and thought out Sir . I only wish I had a little of your woodworking skills so I could confidently restore the lovely horn cabinet my daughter got me for Mother’s Day. Unfortunately minus the lift mechanism and machine platform top also minus the interior ledge for using an acrylic flat frame to drop the machine flat with the table. Love that you made a third option for using the top as a table as well.
    I have a Brad gun , jigsaw, many tools but not the tool you used to do the interior ledge rim. Saving your video in hopes I can either try to do it myself or get a handyman who’s willing to give it a go for me in return first payment and showcasing their talents . One way or another I absolutely must restore this lovely and helpful cabinet.

    I am envious of the recipient of this cabinet. I have looked everywhere to find this kind of lift. They where made in Germany and have never found a place where they where selling them. I even thought about buying a used cabinet with the lift to be able to finally have one. You have done a nice job and thank you for showing us.

    Wow, what a fantastic sewing cabinet. The pull outs holding up the fold downs are so much better than the original doors holding up the sides. The different insets for the machine hole is such a good idea. I have a canabalised 'horn' cabinet which is about 15 years old. I say canabalised because as I purchased new machines, they were bigger and bigger so had to make the 'hole' larger also. One big difference is that my lifter has side frames instead of a back frame like yours which has limited the size of the hole so I am in need of a new table now as my latest machine barely fits in. The other great thing is that you made not only the wooden 'lid' but also the plastic insert and they both are flush with the table top - making it easy to quilt as no ridges to get over (or gaps). The acrylic insert I had originally was never flush. I ended up having it cut to the shape of the front of my machine so there would be no gap (at least at the front) and stick it to the sides with blue tac which makes it easily removed. I'm trying to design cabinets to hold all my 'play' tools as I like to have them ready to be used but easily reachable (without lifting as they are heavy) but also need that flat surface for fabric cutting, quilting and embroidery hooping. I definitely will be borrowing some of your ideas and showing them to a few people here in Australia to see if they can make what I want. I'll be looking at more of your videos and perhaps I might even find one that would be within my limited woodworking skills.

    Hi, sir! I stumbled across your video and LOVE this sewing cabinet. I’ve read all the comments and see that several people have asked where the lift mechanism came from. You say your friend got it. If you could let us know where she got it, I would be beyond excited. My husband, also retired, said he will build it for me if I can find the mechanism. I’d hate for my inability to find it to be the only thing that stands between me and sewing cabinet happiness! Thank you for sharing your amazing talent.

  • @TheOnGridHomestead1
    @TheOnGridHomestead1 7 лет назад

    I like the way the project came out but I was under the impression that instead of folding up over the top, the side tops would fold down, which would allow the rest of the top to be used without interference from the folded up tops. Even in the video you mentioned that the side tops would fold down. At any rate and as I said before, your version of the sewing cabinet (in my opinion) is superior to the one in the picture.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад +1

      When I first started this project I naturally assumed the side tops would fold down. It only makes sense, for the reasons you mentioned. But mostly the sides would be up, or level, so I had to figure the strongest way to do that, which turned out to be the sliding braces and the one-way hinges. However, I'm still with you on this, as I think a better design would have been to fold the right fold out down, and the left up. (The left fold out could not be down because of the file drawer and shelf.} Live and learn, that is the name of the game.
      I only showed one picture in order to simplify the video, but actually I copied several ideas I found, plus I used the inputs from my friend. When I copy something, I normally copy it exactly, out of respect for the designer. But in this case I didn't feel obligated to follow that rule, since I was was inspired by several other designs, and the specific desires of my friend. Perhaps I should have shown some additional pictures. I tell you, trying to limit these videos to 20 minutes leaves plenty of background on the cutting room floor.
      Thanks for watching and commenting. See what I mean: fake views 13K last week, and 100 this week.. I prefer the real views, don't you?
      Easier project next week, which I already finished. Anyway, I just watched the video and I kind of like it, as I was able to concentrate more on the details. See you next week.

    • @TheOnGridHomestead1
      @TheOnGridHomestead1 7 лет назад

      I think the specific desires of your friend are what's important and the improvements you made definitely made the whole thing better. Since I don't sew I wouldn't know what to do with a sewing cabinet anyway. Video editing is certainly a pain in the butt. Most people don't realize how much work goes into that or how hard it is to make cuts and still make the whole thing cohesive. As for the fake views, if that gains more real views I don't see a problem with it. I wonder if fake views increases video ranking and gains more actual views?

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад

      On grid! You are so smart. Never thought of that. Fact is that I only paid for 10.000 views, but I got 13000 views. So perhaps the additional views did increase the algorithm ranking with RUclips, thus giving us 3000 real views.
      ruclips.net/video/gyTQi8_fX10/видео.html But I'm still trying to figure out this video (The 80 feet of fence video), where we got 43,000 views out of the clear blue sky. But I'm testing this theory next week where we start a two part fence building epic. Let's see if RUclips promotes this adventure.
      I hear you on the sewing, which was one of my problems: I know nothing about sewing. Hard to make design decisions on a piece of furniture to which you are ignorant of the functions and requirements.
      Editing is hard for a weekly series, as I often shoot two or three hours of video, which then must be boiled down to 20 minutes. I would increase the number of videos, but not only am I too lazy, but it would degrade the quality.
      Did you see the drawer video yet? Simple, but I kind of liked it.

    • @TheOnGridHomestead1
      @TheOnGridHomestead1 7 лет назад

      I know in the past buying fake views increased a video's ranking but with the new algorithms YT uses now I'm not sure what it does. But hey, if you got 3K more than what you actually paid for maybe it still works.

    searching for information on the lift. my 40 year old hand crafted sewing cabinet had an electric lift that has just recently died. I am wondering if this manual lift would be a good replacement? Any model name or specs you can share with me ? By the way - I am now addicted to your videos :) Thank you

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  4 года назад +1

      I didn't buy the lift, rather it was provided by the friend I built this for. However, in part 1 MM 108 Marty Rose (in the comments) provided a good link.
      Yes, I think one of these mechanical lifts would work just as good as the electric model. First, there is less to go wrong, and second the mechanical lift is spring loaded, so it is easy to raise and lower.
      Hate to admit that I would be pleased with your addiction, but I am. I've been making project videos for 240 straight weeks as of this morning's video, so you won't have to switch to methadone (or weak sauce videos) for quite some time.

    Great video and great take-a-ways. On your projects (especially a hard one like this) I would love to know the cost of the different materials. Just an estimant. You might not want to do this. It might not be public information. I think it might be interesting for others also. Great job as always.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад +2

      The cost is mostly hardware. My friend provided the Machine Lift and the special hinges at for about $250 I think. Wood is whatever wood costs, but the real cost of a project like this is labor, which is why real woodworking, except for high-end stuff isn't economical.
      Since I provide the labor as my part in the channel (and my retirement from the real world), it all works out. But I'm not a politician, so I will stop avoiding the question. Total cost in materials was about $500, including the lift.
      But don't ask your local cabinet maker to make this thing for $500, as the non-retirement labor costs would be silly. Not only labor, but somebody has to pay the light bill, and all the tools involved.
      Frankly, a project like this is only economical if produced in a factory, unless you know a dedicated retired guy with all the right tools.
      In short, $500 for a DYI guy, but man, I'd pay to see the video!
      It's official Ohhiguy, you are a regular, so you get my long convoluted replies. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @ohhiguy
      @ohhiguy 7 лет назад

      I just love being official !!! Ha ha ha Your answer is what I expected. What you do is a labor of love. If I might make a suggestion, perhaps once in a while add some of these cost comments to videos. There are many who have no clue about the real cost. Some might have wrong exceptions and think they are going to save money.
      Anyway, my suggestion may not be a good idea. Perhaps other might add what they think. I just know that many times I find myself wondering the cost of materials, and how much the labor would be (at say only $20/hr.) Thanks again for another great video.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад +2

      Sounds like you know a little bit about this subject!!! But remember, labor cost are not computed based on how much the technician earns. Far from it. A ten hour labor bill is based on "standard hours," which is the amount it takes to keep the whole shop and all the equipment, and the technicians running for an hour. Basically, a "standard hour" is the whole cost of running a shop for a year divided by the number of hours in a year. The worker's salary is only a small part of that total.
      Frankly, I've had car dealerships charge me $150 per hour labor, and felt like I cheated them. And so it is. Even at what seems like silly labor per hour costs, dealerships still barely break even, but they don't care. What they really want is the easy stuff like servicing and oil changes, and buying a new car. They are prepared to eat it on major repairs in order to support customer loyalty.
      Back to woodworking, the same principles apply. If I were a "for profit" institution, then my customers would be paying the "Standard Hours" necessary to support my shop, buy all the materials, and pay my $20 per hour salary. I assure you that the salary would be the smallest part of the bill. And that bill would be silly.
      Of course, that is why, except for the occasional high end situation, there is no such thing as "your local woodworker."
      To be honest, I don't even change the oil in my cars, rather I hire somebody. I don't paint the interior of my house, rather I hire somebody. Etc, etc. My DIY efforts are not designed to save money, or produce better quality, rather my efforts are focused on things I like to do. Again, you can't beat a guy at his own trade, so don't try.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  6 лет назад

      It was so easy that I didn't show it. At 14:40 you can see the plexiglass insert, which was simply cut out of a sheet of plexiglass with a jig saw. The only tricky part is making sure you have the right shape. I spent considerable time making a template using the machine she would be using. Not much room for error, as the insert must fit exactly in the rabbit we put in that oak trim.
      On second thought you are right, I should have shown that part of the process. Sorry. In any case, you can make an insert using plexiglass, which will cut with about any saw.
      Thanks for watching and commenting/.

    • @VoltisArt
      @VoltisArt 4 года назад

      Just as you might do with sewing, a paper pattern (that may be what Memphis used as a template) can make shaping the insert a lot easier. Trace the top edge of the machine's deck carefully, watch out for angled sections, and get the pattern just right before transferring to your insert plate and cutting. The insert can also be made from a nice plywood or something more sturdy (not too heavy for convenience) if you don't like the look of acrylic, or want to match the tabletop.

  • @PidasianHippie
    @PidasianHippie 7 лет назад

    I am VERY tardy this week. Let's just say that my hiking shoes have a lot more miles on them this week. You have officially totally blown my mind with this project. I know it is because I have done a lot of sewing in my life, but the many details of this project is amazing! I am very curious about one thing that my eye kept being drawn to. The handle on the door above the file drawer does not seem to be centered. It appeared to be closer to the bottom. If that is the case, what was your reasoning for this?
    Your comment, "pay no attention to the wood filler" for some odd reason made me think of the Wizard of Oz.....Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Hahahhah
    Did the picture of the original cabinet show the inserts for the hole in the top or was that another brilliant Memphis design. I especially like the plexiglass insert. How is she finding its functionality?
    I read in your comments that she provided the lift. That seems to be a very specialized product. Where did she find it? I keep saying "she" and I guess that makes me a little sexist. There is no reason your friend who sews is not a man.
    Your brackets to line the hole up and mount the top is another genius move. It is doubly brilliant that you drilled all the holes for the screws and putting them where you could reach them through the hole. Attention to detail was countersinking the holes so the screws would be flush with the wood.
    I could detect a note of pride in your voice as you completed sections of this build. It is well deserved. This may not have taken the tedious precision that checkering the shotgun stock took, but it took a lot of thought to design and engineer this. There is no doubt in my mind if you had not been provided the lift, you would have been able to design and implement one. Well Done. You should take a bow with this one.

    • @MemphisApplegate
      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад

      The handle is an illusion I think. It sure looks lower to me also, but I put it in the center.
      Yes, I saw on FB that you were out on the trail. You are tough.
      "She" is correct, since that is what I say in the comment section. So you aren't sexist after all.
      Thanks for all the kind words on this one!!! You are going to make me soft.
      The picture didn't show an insert, but I got both the insert and the plexiglas idea from other cabinet pictures. However, I am taking credit for the slide-out braces and the top attachment system. That being said, I'm careful in google images, as I know neither of these two ideas started with me (they never do).
      She really likes it, and in terms of functionality, she said that there is nothing she would change. Which is nice, as that was my worry during the project: that it wouldn't be what she really wanted. And the worry was scaled up a little by the fact that she had such confidence in me.
      Smaller project next week, as this took so long. But that is good in a way, since I don't have to skip too much.
      Thanks so much for your always kind words. PS, next time I'm at my friends house I will check those handles. Maybe even do a Memphis Answers video on them. Curious.

    • @PidasianHippie
      @PidasianHippie 7 лет назад

      It is weird that the handle looks that way. I wouldn't say I am tough. I am a long way from that. However, the hikes are getting a little easier.
      There is no way you will be soft. You take too much pride in your work for that.
      You may have taken your ideas from pictures, but you had to figure out how to implement each one. I have never seen those slide out braces and I am sure that they make the fold out part much sturdier.
      I am happy to hear that this is working so good for her. Maybe you could get her to make you a fancy Hawaiian shirt for your effort. It would be quite festive with your paper hat.
      You deserve a break with a smaller project after the magnitude of this one. I look forward to seeing what you are up to.
      I like your Memphis Answers videos. Good Idea.

      @MemphisApplegate  7 лет назад

      I think at either tractor supply or lowe's. You want "Hot dipped" galvanize if you can get them; hinges that specifically say they are for exterior use. However, hinges outside stay pretty dry anyway, and would take a long time to rust out. But remember, these are not "gate hinges" really. Actually, they are hinges designed for heavy doors. I find that gate hinges sag too much, at least the one's I've tried.
      I got the idea of using these hinges from watching a gate building video on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/VcwDWegbl5k/видео.html
