I fear everytime an idol market him/her self as authentic, because everyone who had been like that has died. For me, Sulli was truly changing something. She was opening pop-up stores for people, she wanted to open more for girls who couldn't buy tampons/menstrual cups. She openly talked about being "no-bra" and she received so much criticism that for some reason I can understand the fear of idols to show people how they really are. Sulli had a solid carreer. She was the IT girl with Krystal for years. She was the Wonyoung or Jennie from these days. But I had never seen so much hatred thrown at someone and I fear that many idols wants do something more with their platform, but they don't know how and they don't have the support.

I think fatou is a great example of keep move in silence. I think people already expected her to be different in terms of politics and social issues mainly because she’s a black woman, however fatou never states that she trying to change anything. Instead she just does it. She’s been vocal about social issues and speaks about her own ideas and values. But she does it in a casual manner, like it’s nothing crazy and just who she is which in my opinion makes her seem more authentic. I think these are similar in an opposite kind of way, they’re both held to higher standards one being not Korean and the other being American, but where yunjin set her standards to high where intentional or not fatou didn’t bother with setting any expectations and just went along with her own standards and lives up to her own beliefs.

I remember cringing when I read about her saying she would change the industry. To a certain extent it's HYBE identity to portray themselves as not like other KPop artists, so I don't know if it came from an exec board meeting for her persona or her. But it was a lot of pressure to put on her. How are you going to sign with a conglomerate and think you're going to change anything? And she's had haters on her back ever since. There's a good reason most KPop artists keep it bland.

Yeah it feels manufactured, I always had this feeling that Hybe tries to hard to make their groups "unreachable", like from their uniqness or ideals, but lets be honest, Hybe would never let their idols be independent or voice their own opinions on serious matters. But specially like wanting to resemble YG and their idols persona, many know that BigBang got in a lot of scandals but they never adressed them, or the "fight" between 2ne1 and SNSD (that were never true, just YG triying to create a feud to make 2ne1 even more intersting), the silence of the idols gave them a level of superiority that Hybe tries to imitate, but it doesnt work. At the end even idols like Eunchae and Sakura had to make public statements regarding past mini scandals, that could have been solved easily the moment it happened, like when Eunchae jocked about the students who had to wake early....and she got 1 year of hate until this year she apologized for it. Its just so bad managed. At the end the idols are the only suffering
Sulli was not ‘willing to bear the consequences for speaking against the industry’. She made it clear that the bullying hurt her. She was mostly criticized for going braless, having a public relationship, kissing her friend. Yeh she was a feminist and outspoken but the ‘consequences’ was that people were interpreting her posts as overtly sexual when she was just trying to live her life.
I didn't mean the bullying, I do not classify that as a consequence of her actions, it is simply a sign of weakness from those who attacked her online weaponizing the power of their anonymity, I meant the simple criticism, she knew that would happen.

Tbh I don't care for the whole situation, but I like watching you and tbh the 'she said she wanted to' ultimately doesn't change much, because it still makes her look like she wanted to benefit from the performative activism. It's a really thin line on is it a marketing strategy (which usually all these kpop companies sell is) or just her statement. Personally I never believe in the stuff people say in documentaries, because it's a always tuned up and cut in a way to make it feel tragic or special and for you to feel amazed or sympathy. It's a pure money calculation at the end of the day, so they won't say anything unfavorable to the profits. No matter Hybe or any other big company, there a lot of employees that get their money from the group and stuff so it's just a business for them. It is nice wish, and an amazing aspiration. Nothing wrong there, if anything, for awful it is, she did it already, after the whole fiasco in Coachella, idols started to sing more live. She is young, she seems to be learning to produce, she has time. Still if we judge her as a vocalist... I think she has failled till now, she can improve but that will take time and her taking more serious her vocal training while singing and dancing live at stage. It does not matter if she can sing on a studio, she must be abble to sing on a stage.

Its unfortunate her statement was never about the industry, or the people working on it. It was about differentiating her from other idols, uplifting her for not going for the perfect princess image. Her persona is the genz, chronically online, witty westerner. Her "relatability", "uniqueness" and ambition are highlighted so shed come off as genuine in an industry infamous for creating dolls. But she's no different than any other idol in this gen + its not fair to judge artists who follow the standards of the industry they work on! At the end of the day, they're all just people doing their best to make their dreams come true. Yunjin said she WANTS to change the idol industry not that she’s going to. It hasn’t even been 2 1/2 years yet and kpoppies are acting like she is supposed to flip the whole industry upside down and change every toxic thing in this short amount of time. yeah she probably should not have said it but she wants to contribute to changes, including her songs, things she’s said “calories are just numbers”, “you are beautiful as you are” “your health and your happiness is most important” “you are so much more interesting than your looks”, posted for pride month and more. I’m not saying these things are directly going to change the industry as she doesn’t have the complete power to do that but she is making a difference. How can you state for a fact that she had cosmetic surgery when she has never confirmed or denied it? The standards that kpoppies have set for her is a wall she can’t climb over. I do agree that moving in silence is better and she has learned that as she has kept everything she does quiet now. But I believe she will continue to contribute as much as she can to changes even if it’s just one small change at a time.

The whole Le Sserafim concept felt like hypocrisy AFTER they ditched Garam after the bullying scandal, if I am being honest. It would've been more powerful if they held on to her, especially when she was proven to be innocent after all, but then again, they are HYBE's cash cow after all that Min Heejin fiasco so they had to make some tough decisions to ensure they are getting their ROI soonest 😅

I’ve been binging your videos for days now, and your explanations, flow, and editing have really filled in the social gaps I’ve always wished my parents would explain better, instead of just saying, “that’s just how it is.” While some things are “it is what it is,” I believe there are aspects that can be explained to someone socially inept like me. I straight up do NOT understand why there's an expectation for celebrities to do ANYTHING other than... their job, which is to entertain us. Celebrities aren't activists and I think it's a HORRIBLE idea to get your political beliefs from celebrities. Having a large fanbase doesn't automatically mean you're also well versed in the extremely complex and difficult world of politics or industrial standards. Yunjin's job is to dance and sing, I don't expect anything else from her. In the cases of the other women mentioned, most of those "industry changing" instances occurred organically. The girls (maybe minus Soyeon), weren't actively trying to light a fire, but instead reacted to a fire that had already been started. It seems like female idols are expected to be activists more than male idols. Female idols always need to be speaking up about something related to feminism and it's getting exhausting seeing how this only continues to hurt the female idols. How very... feminist... tearing other women down for not being good enough.
I also noticed it. Female idols are held to a higher standard and expectations than male idols. Every analysis video I've seen from kpop pages are female idols. Whether its about dancing and singing skills or visuals or being vocal about whatever issues. Male idols are given more grace and tend to be babied more.

Even boygroups that are known to the GP like BTS gets critisised for everything. There where lot of trending articles about Jimin’s encore just like there was about Le Sserafim’s encore. In my opinion, if someone wants to change an industry they do it through their actions not just through their words. Up until now Yunjin has said that she wants to change the industry, but she doesn’t have actions to back it up. Yes she has two songs that are really good, but she hasn’t done anything to actually change the industry. And even if this is her desire, I don’t think HYBE is going to allow it considering how manufactured their “HYBE born” groups are. The company wants certain idols to be relatable and at the same time wants to control them.
This exactly. HYBE uses her to tell fans that they are better than the rest of the industry, their idols will change something. But in the end, they still want their idols as their little dolls who behave.
IMO, criticism/toxic hate/ in Kpop is not very complicated. It is focused on the very best/most popular/most talented and the very worst performers who happen to be very popular. Example, Jennie Kim, talented rapper/dancer/singer/stage performer, who was the most popular female Kpop Idol from 2017 to 2019, when she was hate trained like no other Kpop Idol who never said anything remotely controversial. Jennie never responded to the hate other than upping her live performances (the focal point of the hate) to unquestionably high standards. And that is what Yunjin also needs to do, ignore the hate train (Mastering Silence as you suggested), comeback with hits and kill it in live performances. And all will be good. Also, make sure that the 3 least talented vocalists in her group enroll in intensive singing lessons.

To be honest I think that her little contributions like 13:22 her song I≠Doll could have been used as her changing the industry through her music and expressing her thoughts through her music. I think Source music should definitely continue to encourage and release her solo songs with all the issues she thinks are problematic things in the industry. Like how different artists like use music to talk to the audiences (we can’t be friends by Ariana , Nice by Beyoncé and Jay-Z) these songs all express the relationship between them and and how they’re viewed without them ever talking about it. They just sing about it.
When she released that I immediately thought "oh okay, yes, she is starting to express herself through music" but after that... pretty much silence. It should have been used as a starting point and continued in that direction, slowly highlighting issues within the industry and bad experiences Yunjin had in more and more depth.

Qwer has a mostly male fanbase. Which makes me question the member's real view of feminism. At the same time, many feminists take it too far and forget the ultimate goal of feminism: to have equal rights to men. Women in Korea actually have it better than say, Saudi Arabia or Qatar. But the point is, is she really against everything feminist, or she is playing the part of an anti woke woman because the fandom is 90 percent dudes.
Fair analysis, I don't know accurate this information is but it is claimed that she said it before she was part of the group, in 2018 when she was attending an all girls university, so I think this is just how she views feminism in general.

I understand that it's her goal, but being a long time Kpop fan herself, she should've known better that saying sth like that is a double edged sword. LSF is just 2yo group which is hard to make that impact is true, but that people dont consider it. As a long time kpop fan let me tell you. The industry changed. Le Sserafim are able to do certain concepts becuase groups like 2ne1, Mamamoo, f(x) and more changed the industry. In current days idols are way more free in their image (healthy bodies, tan skin, sexy, tattos, unconventional beauties) than ever, they can almost be compared to western artists.
Ppl fail to understand that change is gradual and takes time not always fast. Her statement alone and songs could also reach the hearts of more changemakers who will be inspired and work towards change. Throughout history changes didn't happen quickly it became full blown with time. I don't even get why ppl are making her statement a big deal and punishing her for voicing out her wishes and goals.

She very much was expected to change everything bad about kpop. If anything I think New Jeans Hanni is changing the industry whether she fails or succeeds. She didn't have to attend or testify at the National Assembly audit but she chose to as she felt it was her responsibility to stand up for her group member's future sake and for anyone who chooses to enter the Kpop industry. She has a nice wish, an amazing aspiration. Nothing wrong there, if anything, for awful it is, she did it already, after the whole fiasco in Coachella, idols started to sing more live. She is young, she seems to be learning to produce, she has time. Still if we judge her as a vocalist... I fear everytime an idol market him/her self as authentic, because everyone who had been like that has died. For me, Sulli was truly changing something. She was opening pop-up stores for people, she wanted to open more for girls who couldn't buy tampons/menstrual cups. She openly talked about being "no-bra" and she received so much criticism that for some reason I can understand the fear of idols to show people how they really are. Sulli had a solid carreer. She was the IT girl with Krystal for years. She was the Wonyoung or Jennie from these days. I think fatou is a great example of keep move in silence. I think people already expected her to be different in terms of politics and social issues mainly because she’s a black woman, however fatou never states that she trying to change anything. Instead she just does it. She’s been vocal about social issues and speaks about her own ideas and values. But she does it in a casual manner, like it’s nothing crazy and just who she is which in my opinion makes her seem more authentic. I think these are similar in an opposite kind of way, they’re both held to higher standards one being not Korean and the other being American, but where yunjin set her standards to high where intentional or not fatou didn’t bother with setting any expectations and just went along with her own standards and lives up to her own beliefs.

I remember cringing when I read about her saying she would change the industry. To a certain extent it's HYBE identity to portray themselves as not like other KPop artists, so I don't know if it came from an exec board meeting for her persona or her. But it was a lot of pressure to put on her. How are you going to sign with a conglomerate and think you're going to change anything? And she's had haters on her back ever since. Tbh I don't care for the whole situation, but I like watching you and tbh the 'she said she wanted to' ultimately doesn't change much, because it still makes her look like she wanted to benefit from the performative activism. It's a really thin line on is it a marketing strategy (which usually all these kpop companies sell is) or just her statement. Personally I never believe in the stuff people say in documentaries, because it's a always tuned up and cut in a way to make it feel tragic or special and for you to feel amazed or sympathy. It's a pure money calculation at the end of the day, so they won't say anything unfavorable to the profits. No matter Hybe or any other big company, there a lot of employees that get their money from the group and stuff so it's just a business for them. Its unfortunate her statement was never about the industry, or the people working on it. It was about differentiating her from other idols, uplifting her for not going for the perfect princess image. Her persona is the genz, chronically online, witty westerner. Her "relatability", "uniqueness" and ambition are highlighted so shed come off as genuine in an industry infamous for creating dolls. But she's no different than any other idol in this gen + its not fair to judge artists who follow the standards of the industry they work on! I straight up do NOT understand why there's an expectation for celebrities to do ANYTHING other than... their job, which is to entertain us. Celebrities aren't activists and I think it's a HORRIBLE idea to get your political beliefs from celebrities. Having a large fanbase doesn't automatically mean you're also well versed in the extremely complex and difficult world of politics or industrial standards. Yunjin's job is to dance and sing, I don't expect anything else from her.
In the cases of the other women mentioned, most of those "industry changing" instances occurred organically. The girls (maybe minus Soyeon), weren't actively trying to light a fire, but instead reacted to a fire that had already been started. It seems like female idols are expected to be activists more than male idols. Female idols always need to be speaking up about something related to feminism and it's getting exhausting seeing how this only continues to hurt the female idols. How very... feminist... tearing other women down for not being good enough.
I also noticed it. Female idols are held to a higher standard and expectations than male idols. Every analysis video I've seen from kpop pages are female idols. Whether its about dancing and singing skills or visuals or being vocal about whatever issues. Male idols are given more grace and tend to be babied more.

In my opinion, if someone wants to change an industry they do it through their actions not just through their words. Up until now Yunjin has said that she wants to change the industry, but she doesn’t have actions to back it up. Yes she has two songs that are really good, but she hasn’t done anything to actually change the industry. And even if this is her desire, I don’t think HYBE is going to allow it considering how manufactured their “HYBE born” groups are. The company wants certain idols to be relatable and at the same time wants to control them.

IMO, criticism/toxic hate/ in Kpop is not very complicated. It is focused on the very best/most popular/most talented and the very worst performers who happen to be very popular. Example, Jennie Kim, talented rapper/dancer/singer/stage performer, who was the most popular female Kpop Idol from 2017 to 2019, when she was hate trained like no other Kpop Idol who never said anything remotely controversial. Jennie never responded to the hate other than upping her live performances (the focal point of the hate) to unquestionably high standards. And that is what Yunjin also needs to do, ignore the hate train (Mastering Silence as you suggested), comeback with hits and kill it in live performances. And all will be good. Also, make sure that the 3 least talented vocalists in her group enroll in intensive singing lessons.

To be honest I think that her little contributions like 13:22 her song I≠Doll could have been used as her changing the industry through her music and expressing her thoughts through her music. I think Source music should definitely continue to encourage and release her solo songs with all the issues she thinks are problematic things in the industry. Like how different artists like use music to talk to the audiences (we can’t be friends by Ariana , Nice by Beyoncé and Jay-Z) these songs all express the relationship between them and and how they’re viewed without them ever talking about it. They just sing about it.
When she released that I immediately thought "oh okay, yes, she is starting to express herself through music" but after that... pretty much silence. It should have been used as a starting point and continued in that direction, slowly highlighting issues within the industry and bad experiences Yunjin had in more and more depth.

Qwer has a mostly male fanbase. Which makes me question the member's real view of feminism. At the same time, many feminists take it too far and forget the ultimate goal of feminism: to have equal rights to men. Women in Korea actually have it better than say, Saudi Arabia or Qatar.

They are also authentic as musicians and performers who have never once lipsynced in their entire career and even when theyve lost their voices from illness would rather let the crowd sing for them then do something that betrays the core spirit of music like lipsync does

As a long time kpop fan let me tell you. The industry changed. Le Sserafim are able to do certain concepts becuase groups like 2ne1, Mamamoo, f(x) and more changed the industry. In current days idols are way more free in their image (healthy bodies, tan skin, sexy, tattos, unconventional beauties) than ever, they can almost be compared to western artists.
Ppl fail to understand that change is gradual and takes time not always fast. Her statement alone and songs could also reach the hearts of more changemakers who will be inspired and work towards change. Throughout history changes didn't happen quickly it became full blown with time. I don't even get why ppl are making her statement a big deal and punishing her for voicing out her wishes and goals.

Every time her popularity starts growing, yall come out with this same hit piece topic on repeat to drag her for not being the Jesus of kpop. She very much was expected to change everything bad about kpop. People gave whole lists about things she didn't fix to criticize her and it was major things like slave contracts, idol mistreatment, bullying and so on. That's why she questioned if her ideas were big enough and why her fans told people they were asking too much to defend her. They weren't all just being delusional. To come back now and pretend she was just asked to for the basics is rewriting history.
Also, her having a show is not a new idea. But how could that happen when any Le Sserafim content has always been spammed with hate. Sakura stopped doing her show. Eunchae was under contract and had to do hers. You have to stop the rage/hate first and kpop rehashing this topic every 3 months to relive her criticism doesn't really help like some think it does.

I struggle with anxiety and depression and know how that feels. But in the real world, you have to grow up because not every boss is going to want to deal with that. Instead, they would replace you with someone who can get the job done. It sucks, but that's how it is. I agree moving silently is the way to go, but it’s strange that with Americans not even doing that will keep the hater at bay. Chanelle from the redebuted fifty fifty, they projected themselves onto her while she was on RUNEXT and when she was revealed to be part of fifty fifty they turned on her. They said they were disappointed in her for joining when she had never spoken about her ideals or her morals or anything that would have told anyone what she truly thinks. Twitter stans were boycotting and she had a Twitter account 4 years ago so that means she more culpable than any of the other girls who also joined. If anything I think New Jeans Hanni is changing the industry whether she fails or succeeds. She didn't have to attend or testify at the National Assembly audit but she chose to as she felt it was her responsibility to stand up for her group member's future sake and for anyone who chooses to enter the Kpop industry. She didn't ask to change the industry or want to, things just happened between HYBE and ADOR which led her to this moment. I know people are saying what happened to her seems like nothing compared to what past idols/ groups went through but the thing is things can escalate and the future is unclear. Maybe the past idols/ groups didn't want to speak up or wasn't given the opportunity to speak up but they can get some closure that someone is speaking up now, that they are heard and things like this can be prevented for people working in the Kpop industry now and incoming Kpop idols and future idols in the making.

She has a nice wish, an amazing aspiration. Nothing wrong there, if anything, for awful it is, she did it already, after the whole fiasco in Coachella, idols started to sing more live.
She is young, she seems to be learning to produce, she has time.

I swear to God, the only company that seems to give a shit is Happyface/Dreamcatcher company. The industry should look at the system there because they seem to be doing things right. Dreamcatcher re-signing early, still dorming together, making first-class merch and some of the best CD boxes, giving them a fair mix of promotions and touring, etc.
