I love how like 90% of fairy tales are just some kind of fairy creature saying “hey human, don’t do this one thing” and then the human proceeding to doing that one thing anyways.

There’s a Mermaid Saint in Ireland.
She was a human but due to leaving the lid off a well, her village was flooded and everyone drowned, except from her and her dog. She turned into and mermaid and her dog an otter. They lived happily in the new lake for a few centuries till she got tangled up in the fishing nets of some monks. They offer to baptise her regifting her a soul but she would become mortal, where as if she doesn’t get baptised she’ll stay immortal but no soul. She chooses the baptism and the soul, and dies almost instantly.
No record is given about the fate of the dog/otter.

I'm from Czechia and we have a very strong folk tradition of vodníci - vodyanoi, as a landlocked country these lived in ponds and lakes, not the sea, but the reason why I bring it up is because the plot of the The Ballad of Agnes and the Merman sounds pretty much the same as Vodník from Kytice by Karel Jaromír Erben. He was one of our most important Romantic writers, also a poet and a folklorist. If you're interested in Slavic/Central European folklore, his Kytice is a collection of poems inspired by spooky folk tales, it's full of ghosts, noon-wraiths, magic, murders, etc. It's one of the most important pieces of literature in Czech history and it's interesting to see the influences or shared folklore that inspired him.

Ah Melusine! One of my favorite mythological characters. I think it is interesting that the two tails and its correlations with more ancient female images displaying female genitals has been interpreted as representing the sexual feminine mysteries in the context of seduction and power over men, when it is so clearly a veneration of fertility. It is always stated that Melusine bore many children. I think that her role as a reclaimed ancient fertility symbol is significant here. The whole story starts with a fertile birth of triplets, and continues within the context of a mothers love and rage for her spouse and eventually her children which ends up happening again in this feminine cycle of transformation. I love the many layers of this story. Thanks for this one!

Yeah, here in Brazil we do have 2 main mermaids, Yara, from indigenous roots, as the goddess of Amazon river, and Yemanjá, the mother of seas, brought to us from enslaved africans. They also brought Oxum, the goddess of rivers and sweet water.

Ireland in and of itself is riddled with stories of Mermaids and Mermaid adjacent beings and creatures, from the Merrow folk of the south and Southwest, to the Selkies of the North and Northwest, to various deities that could be considered as merfolk, to the spirits of humans who died in some body of water, etc. Could probably make a video just on that, honestly, haha.
And there are similar tales to woman being transformed into a dragon, save for only certain periods of time. Only it's usually a swan and not a dragon in the Irish stories (Caer Ibormeith comes to mind).

I believe the earliest modern mermaid comes from a king's mirror written in mid 13th century Norway. It describes mermaids as one of the wonders found in the waters around Greenland, with the ability to bring either good or bad luck to a passing ship depending on how she approaches it.

Oh I was waiting for this! Your research into the folklore and mythology of all figures and creatures that formed the modern mermaid concept is astounding, thank you so much for such a fascinating journey through the history of this creature.
Random information you may find amusing - from what I’ve learned in modern Greek, the words for siren, mermaid, nereid, and nymph all represent different things:
    - ‘Siren’ still has the same sort of reference to the mythological creature that Odysseus encountered, the bird lady creatures
    - The word for ‘mermaid’ is the same word as for ‘gorgon’ (Ariel as The Little Gorgon… try marketing that, Disney). A catch-all term for scaly monster ladies, I suppose.
    - The word for nereid can mean ‘fairy/sprite’, and I’ve heard it used as a term of endearment for a baby girl to describe how cute she is
    - The word for ‘nymph’ shows up in ecclesiastical writing as a word for ‘bride’ (e.g. Mary mother of Jesus is referred to with this in the paraliturgical chant ‘Agni Parthene’). In fact our modern word for bride is also based on ‘nymph’.

Really enjoyed this video but the music playing over the top of it was a bit much for me. I don't know if it was too loud or what but at times I struggled to concentrate because the music kept grabbing my attention away from what you were saying.

My family comes from the regions of France you mention in this video. We don’t know much about our French family aside from the regions they lived in. I came for historical mermaid references and left knowing fairy tales are part of my genealogy. Cooooool!

I fear I may be enjoying listening to you tell stories about dark mermaids slightly too much, If indeed that's possible!

This was so interesting. ☺️ Politely though Sile na gigh in Irish folklore was believed to fend off evil spirits and is often found on old churches. Many 'pagans' wear necklaces with a sile na gigh on them for fertility and protection ☺️

Well, interesting topic: it's actually unknown where they originated from and it's still up for debate in academia. Whilst it's largely known in Ireland, the figures only appeared there in the 12th century, and there's more evidence that it existed across Spain and France in the 11th century, and thus isn't Irish in origin. There's a lot of debate around it because it's so renowned in Ireland, but from dating, it would seem, to have come across from France/Spain. There's an excellent paper on it here: www.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:1143857/FULLTEXT01.pdf

Thank you for the video, very informative. I am however wondering where your source of information about Sheela na gig comes from, as I thought that the image was used to ward off death, evil and demons.

my dad is from a very isolated and backward village in India. He had a friend who used to tell me about the mermaids he used to interact with when he was a kid. Although they were supposedly pretty small in stature, they were very human like. Apparently the mermaids and the humans used to interact with each other alot and they used to help the humans in fishing but they stopped showing up when the population grew and society became more modernized and connected. There were alot of creatures in my dads village but they stopped showing up or maybe moved further away when the roads were built and communication and transportation became a thing. And I truly believe him because most of the older generations who are dead now, communicated with all those creatures as well. Mind you, my dad's village was very backward and isolated. It didnt even have electricity and nice roads until recently. It seems the more nature there was, the more they showed themselves but modernity and technology pushed them away. Another thing was that my dad's village was very much into ancient magick and they worshipped ancient Gods and Goddeses but now they are all Christians. Christianity reached them very late. Maybe that has something to do with it idk.

I personally dislike the musicloop though. It only adds noise and nothing else (for me).
