- In this video which I like to call the Double Box Destruction of the Harbor Freight Icon Double Box Flex Ratcheting Wrench Tool Set. We will be testing multiple sizes 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 17mm and 19mm to failure. There are a few different areas where these could fail at and we will look at and review the yoke, pin, handle for flex and bending, and finally do we break or strip the internal mechanism. Remember these Double Box extra long flex ratcheting wrenches are not serviceable or repairable and have to be replaced when damaged and picking a company that allows for easy and dependable warranty is a major reason why I purchased this set.
The Icon Professional Double Box Flex Ratcheting Wrench is precision-machined for a perfect non-slip grip, and features a 90 tooth reversible ratcheting box end for easy fastener engagement without slippage and prevents fastener round-off, resulting in more efficient work. We use a premium chrome vanadium steel, with a tough and durable polished chrome finish that offers superior rust and corrosion resistance and prevents grease build-up. The flex box ends make it easier to work in tight spaces and reach around obstructions. Designed with comfort and efficiency in mind, the Icon™ Professional Double Box Flex Ratcheting Wrench offers a balanced handle design for a comfortable secure grip, and is backed by a hassle-free manufacturer's lifetime warranty.

You know you're a gear head when you watch videos of a guy breaking tools for science
The biggest problem with ratcheting wrenches is in the usage. They were not designed to break a bolt or nut loose , there are proper tools for that. These are designed to speed up the process after initial breakaway. Always use the proper tools for the task at hand and you will rarely have a failure... Unless you are buying your tools at the dollar store. An awesome review , very well 👍.
You are absolutely spot on. Your wrenches will last you a lifetime if used for their intended purposes.
👍🏼
I use them all the time for that work great but ok not the icons even cheaper ones
I felt this way for a while when I got the husky ones first. I saw the tech training me use the icons and I thought it was bad practice, but they are robust and can handle breaking a fastener loose. I still use the open end first if I have access, but I trust the ratchet end in tight spots.
Tools with lifetime warranties are like rental cars, if you don't beat the crap out of it once in awhile you aren't getting all the value for your money that you could. Just don't mention you had a 4' snipe on your 3/8" ratchet and bingo, fresh replacement.
"by hand"
*proceeds to use entire arm, leg, body, soul, and cosmic energy*
LMAO
OMG LOL Too funny.
🤣🤣🤣
For the price and the amount of torque applied to them before failure, they are a great tool.
I am very impressed with the high breaking torque. A 10mm nut would break far before 70- ft-lb is applied.
They have performed extremely well. I am impressed. You can not beat them for the price.
In my professional opinion as a mechanic for 20 years, this is a fantastic tool. The amount of torque applied before failure is well beyond what could be applied to nearly every faster of equal size on most vehicles, they would round or sheer well before the tool fails. Personally, if you're using this to break stuff free instead of a non ratcheting 6pt wrench, breaker bar, or at least a professional quality 1/2" ratchet and 6pt socket, you may want to rethink working on anything.
Yeah. These run to failure tests show that during regular use, you will not run to failure. Even the tiny size can tighten a lug nut...
This is exactly why I'd buy the icons. The warranty. I've own alot of extended (long) ratchet wrenches and they all tend to have these issues. At harbor freight you can just bring it back for a replacement
So should I get icon or mountain?
@@ktate2002 not that I’ve ever experienced. The only issues I’ve ever had there is cashiers that don’t know how to handle warranties.
@@ktate2002 just a phone number!
@@ktate2002 Only for returns or if you want single sockets/wrenches for lost tools. They only off the single socket/wrench ordering for the Icon line.
Warrenty is just walk in with the tool.
If you have a Matco student discount, I believe you can get these for right around the same price as the icon version
This test was very impressive, and interesting to see the results spanning from smallest to largest! These seem really great for leverage with stubborn bolts and nuts. Thanks!
This has sold me on the style with box at one end, ratchet on the other. Use the box to break it free, then swap and spin the bolt out. Long wrenches lure you into putting too much torque on a vulnerable mechanism.
Been lusting after these wrenches for a few years. And watching them break.
After watching you, still lusting.
Thanks so much for defining the limits of most of the set. Really very well done. Best I ever. Now I can see why the Harbor Freight wrenches can be harder to find.
Because Icon. You have a new subscriber.
Love the honest and in depth review. There’s another youtuber with all the icon tools and swears that he uses them every day and they hold up. He opens the drawers and they look like they’ve barely been used
We all know exactly who you're talking about haha, the guy with the entire wall of the green us general 44" boxes
Just watched it again.
Nobody has done it better.
Thanks again, good job!!
Thanks for posting. Love seeing tools being out to extreme test
9:52 "Lets go ahead and finish this off". Sounded just like Freddy Krugger, this was like a tool horror movie. I liked it!
This set has been on my radar for a while now its definitely going to be added to my box ASAP!
Anything Icon makes has been pure gold for me . they are snapon good if you ask me .
Long reach ratchet icon wrench’s are awesome. They have been very good to me and have got me out of a pinch more than once
Icon is pretty impressive for the price and those held up really well
Awesome video Chris, I was waiting for clay to do something like this with his but I’m glad you finally did it. Your videos are very detailed and give real expectations when it comes to torque output. I’m definitely gonna pick some of these up now. Can you review the non flex double closed end ones now lol. Ratcheting ones
More visual detailed information on the limitations of these tools which everyone can appreciate considering the price point. Great good Chris .
I just bought these today and this video made me a little happier about my purchase
I am very impressed with Icon vs all of the other in store brand tools I've tried like Cobalt, Craftsman etc. They have some quality to them and the price with the warranty is great.
The little engine that could 10mm. The little brand that could. And the warranty is one of the best
It's a win in my book if they keep my knuckles from bleeding and pay for themselves the first day I use them. Which has been my experience for all of the Taiwanese Harbor Freight, Pittsburgh PRO, and Icon tools I've bought.
All impressive, the platinum tech is what convinced me to buy these.... I thought these were unnecessary until my buddy let me borrow them for a few months. They are unique and well worth, Ive cringed so many times watching him “trying” to break them in my shop. The gearwrench non-offset I had before these were absolute garbage! The 120xp had so much slop, and 13mm was closer to 13.5, 14m was closer to 9/16 etc, there were all slightly bigger.. awesome review thank you
As a harbor freight employee, I would've just laughed when you came in to return them. Like dannggg what did you do to them? Lol while grabbing another set for ya. You have them for life as long as you keep up with them.
The 10mm was the most impressive
It's the most important one
The 13 & 15 were a little less proportional but an impressive showing ICON. Cool video Chris
Be careful bro. One of these days one of those tools is gonna let go and you'll find yourself about a block from the garage LOL!
i think most people would not use there tools like this. This to me is a good way to judge how tough the tools are. So to me , i would not have a problem adding the icons to my tool box. love your videos...
Chris is tough on tools, but it is great to know the limitations. I have this set and am glad I bought them. They make a lot of tough jobs almost effortless. The HF warranty is too good to pass up and that’s why they are expensive.
I believe the bolt would snap before the wrench broke.
This man is out here risking his life, looking out for our best interest when it comes to spending money on tools. Hats off to you sire!
(I say risking his life because of the way he fell on the ground breaking that last one)
These are Dawm good wrench’s & I love them
Great video. This style of ratchet is my favorite. Moves my hands out away from getting banged up on everything. I wonder if the Tekton would hold up any better. They have the point ratchet not the spline Drive.
That shows a Strong enough to be an everyday work horse.
Go ahead and grab one.
I’ve had these for a few months. I don’t use them a bunch but the do come in handy every once in a while. That 19mm one works great when I pull the blades off my riding mower for sharpening.
It should work good for mower blade removal for many years✌️
If you jack up the front of your mower and hold the blade a 1/2 inch impact works a lot better
I really like all ur videos. Full of rich information. Thank u
Thanks man, I really like doing them assuming I have time. November and December get cold out and the holidays always make things crazy. Thanks for watching and commenting👍🏻
@@ClientGraphics just wondering? Do u have any battle of the cordless rachets video!? I've been in the market for one. But there are a lot to choose from. Huskey, ryobi, Milwaukee, kobalt, makita, harbor freight, craftmens, amazon, etc. That would be a bad ass video
Good experience with icon warranties so far.
these are better than i could have imagined. id feel like id reach for an impact socket if im nearing grunting force with these box wrenches.
Great. Another tested-beyond-reasonable-use video.
Yup, nothing but click bate. So desperate!
Unless you actually work with them every day.
@@kylesonsalla7620 ftfy - "Unless you misuse them every day."
Seriously - does this give you useful information? All of the failures are where the tool is being used well-beyond what they're designed to withstand, w/ cheater bars etc. If that's your every-day work situation, I'd like to make sure I avoid your shop...
Very nicely done Chris 👍💪💪 I think you may have stumbled onto a fun way to work out !!! LOL I keep worrying about you flying backwards and hurting yourself. Merry Christmas to you and your family !!!!!
He eat shit on that 19mm lol take a look.
Thanks for another great video.
I've had the same set for over two years, and believe me I've put em through hell with many of the nuts and bolts I removed from cars and trucks I dismantled and so far they've held up pretty good!
The only regret I've had about buying this set,was not buying them sooner. They truly make hard to reach and wrench nuts and bolts less difficult(If not easy).Originally I thought this style of wrenches could only be found on the tool truck for about $500+ from one of the tool trucks. But I got mine back in '21 for just about $224 with a coupon.
If you're considering this set,DO IT!
I just picked mine up today 01/19/24 with a coupon for $180 out the door with taxes $192 n change purchase well done if u ask me
I have found over the years that cheap tools will wear out or break before more expensive ones, usually, no matter what people on the internet say. However, tools not taking much abuse, or being used often still justify trying to save some money. And sometimes the cheaper tools can outperform more expensive ones….sometimes.
But when people (usually in the comments or sponsored videos) try to make believe the cheapest ones are just as good it proves they probably don’t actually use many tools. :)
Service in the form of warranty is also a factor.
with respect to you. ICON are not cheap tools. They are snap-on branded for harbor freight. I have been a marine mechanic for just over 50 years. I use snap-on, Mac, Matco, Cornwell, Craftsman and for fun I use Metrinch. OF all the brands I have used Snap-on and Matco break many times more than any of the others. I have a silly set of metrinch that has lasted me now almost 25 years and not a single one has broken... take that back, one wrench which they immediately replaced about twelve years ago.
The ones that broke the least? Craftsman, and I can just take those anywhere now and replace them. No waiting for that truck and no crap from the drivers.
Snap-on is so over rated it is not funny as are the other three majors. All cost way too much and are zero percent better. When I started going Craftsman etc I was able over the last 20 years to buy a much nicer home and vehicles, take family on vacations around the planet and all from the savings from NOT paying tool trucks every week for crap that costs sometimes 20 times or more what they should cost.
Ok haters lol have at me :-) Ill just sit back in my Ram 3500 or my nice house and smile while you go out to that truck again and get sucked into another tool that is way to much money.
Been waiting on this video for sooo Long! Nice one!👍
ICON Brand, worth every single penny nice video thanks,
doing field service on machine shop equipment , I keep a set of harbor freight metric tools that I very often have to cut in half to fit into tight spaces
The only Icon tool I bought so far are breaker bars(including the $100 3/4" x 36") and so far I am thoroughly impressed with them.
I found those to be very impressive!
I've had to return a few Icon ratchets because they would only rachet in one direction, or the direction switch would change position while using it.
My local HF had no problem swapping any of them out. The only thing I was asked is what problem the tool was giving me.
Those Duralast gloves hold up very well.
Just got these and glad I did. With labor rates approaching $200/hr. These will pay for themselves.
Great video!👍🏻👍🏻
That was a very impressive video. It makes me want to buy a set of wrenches. Lol!!
Same here. just seen em and didnt think much at Harbor Freight but now i want some lol. I bought a 1/2 inch rachet and a 3/8 with the red grip and they are working fine.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years chris and the family @ClientGraphics
ClientGraphics.. That's somewhat impressive for Icon. That's why I like the wrenches that are the same size on both ends with one end being the regular boxed wrench and the other end being the ratchet wrench. That way you can break it loose with the regular boxed end and then use the ratchet wrench end to finish.
Yea Gearwrench ones are Awsome, I’m sure the Matcos r good too but very expensive
@@jaydee2620
Matco is Gearwrench, they're the same company now
@@kylesonsalla7620 No they aren't. Fortive owns Matco, Bain owns Gearwrench. There might have been some mix there around 2012 before they sold Cooper and Danaher.
That’s the way they’re intended to be used. I feel like a lot of people don’t understand that you shouldn’t be using any ratcheting tool to break free frozen fasteners.
I like that he points out to use your tools appropriately.
I love the icon tools
Great. These are on my Christmas list. :)
I’ve had solid luck with icon and I use them professionally.
Very good info!
I’m going to have to pick them up
I love your take it to failure tests. Lol it's funny to realize that there are still people out there that apparently don't know what a breaker bar is and why we use them. Takes a brick with lips with ape strength who has an uncle Daddy and aunt Mommy to break these wrenches, especially when you get into the bigger ones. I bought a 10 pc set of the long handle Icon double box wrenches and they are great. Non flex so solid shaft, regular box on one end, ratchet box on the other. They are absolutely Kabo wrench clones. Stay off the tool trucks and try them.
Good job!
I'm pretty sure with that much torque any truck brand would bend or pin would have failed, give or take a little torque.. But or the price and not having to fight with a truck dealer to warranty these are a very good buy, Just my opinion. I'm not trying to hurt any tool truck brand fanboys' feelings, trust me I was also a toll truck fanatic before I realized I to put my kids thru college.
These are all very impressive, I'd get more nervous when they're ON the angle. Try the SAME set again, but with all of them at say 30°/ then you have some broad interesting info that you could apply to EVERY ratcheting wrench that pivots 🤷♂️
That would have been pretty interesting to do. I might have to get some flex head ratcheting wrenches and try it sometime.
Great video sir , I would definitely buy them, they are strong.
I have this set and it is awesome! Money well spent imo
Just so y’all know, mountain, icon, Carlyle, Matco and a few others are all the same wrenches...same patent being used for all of them. I went with harbor freight for ease of warranty.
Sounds like a pretty badass tool factory down there in China
@@Lee-lb9qh Taiwan* but yes actual quality and badassery
@@SnD340
Taiwan > China
@@An_Appeal_To_Heaven I agree. Taiwan actually makes great tools for the money.
Kabo is the manufacturer and Patent holder. Very good tools.
I've had excellent luck with icon tools I use them 6 days a week on transit buses. While I won't be using the ratchet wrench to break bolts that tight. I did break my icon 1/2 drive x 18" flex head ratchet at the screw I just replaced the screw and have been running with it for over 2 years
The tektons i have noticed using them they don't bend but they skip teeth with very little force were the icon bends and dosen't skip teeth @ClientGraphics
I bought these completely blind not knowing a thing about them. I only got them because of the price point between these and the tool trucks. I have absolutely no complaints on them and would recommend anyone give them a try! .... I hate to throw exact numbers but I paid like $150 at HF compared to $500 plus on the snap on truck and $300 plus from my matco guy.
Great video Chris @ClientGraphics
I’ve been wrenching for over 30 years and professionally for over 20 years, I’ve went through a lot of tools. Now that I’m a HD equipment mechanic for a demolition company reliability is a necessity. Everything is much larger and a lot of carnage is done not only to the equipment but to my tools that fixes them. I’ve had tools from a lot of different brands. I’m not a “Brand” guy by any means. The Icon brand has really propelled itself into the talks with the likes of Snap On, Matco and Mac (which I have a variety of tools from them) The variety of tools and equipment from these three is what gives them the advantage over the Icon brand however I’ve started replacing my aged tools with Icon. For the money, these tools are outstanding. I won’t knock the big three or anyone that buys from them but I don’t have to mortgage my house to stack my service truck or my garage with quality tools. This channel really helps us, the consumer to make a fair decision on our purchases. Keep up the good work.
In all honesty I’m impressed....when you reach for these type or wrenches your not gonna be putting this amount of torque on um. I’m just curious over time how weak they would get out of daily use. Another thing my local harbor freight has always been great/no questions asked in warranty. I’d say these are a win👍
I'd agree.
As a mechanic one older guy in my shop has snap on everything his sockets are all at least 15 years old he has never broken a socket however from use the sockets are so used and worn the side that snaps onto the impact gun is loose and the sockets fall off if you point the gun down snap-on will not warranty your sockets for this reason unless they crack or break.
Excellent test and glad to see how they hold up especially since I just purchased this set. Great video as always Chris.
Afte you made your video and posted on why you purchased them I had to get moving and finish this one. Thanks Clay for the motivation!
Love these worth every penny I wanna buy another set for home!!!! LOVE YOUR VIDS KOON!!!! Its Friday!!!!
I saw your video
Were these the same?
Harbor freight employees, “wtf how’d he brake every single one of them”.
Nice to see a strength test on these and that Harbor Freight honored they're warranty. I personally purchased these wrenches about a year ago and have used them a lot and have been very glad I did. When you need that flex head they are invaluable and considering they are priced $150 less than the Matco equivalent I'd say they perform very well.
The matco equivalent is the same tool. They’re made by mountain. The same as those Carlyle wrenches he had, same as cornwell
The matco equivalent is the same tool. They’re made by mountain. The same as those Carlyle wrenches he had, same as cornwell
In my thirty plus years as a DIY guy keeping his cars running, I’ve only broken one tool. My Husky brand 1/4” ratchet.
I bought 1/2 dr sae impact swivel socket set ICON & in one day of use I was removing several 8 bolt flanged valves that had 3/4 inch bolts so a 1 1/8 inch socket anyway after about 30 or so bolts my ingersoll rand w7152 managed to snap that 1 1/8 inch ICON swivel socket so I got off work & warranty out no problems still using it for about three months
I heard some of the original Icon Impact tools had problems but were improved in later runs. That’s probably why your replacement is still running.
I would never abuse a tool like that but very cool seeing someone else do it 🤣 two thumbs up! 👍👍
A trip to HF and he gets them replaced for free. They have a lifetime warranty.
@@seephor yeah and videos like this is why we about to have LIMITED lifetime warranty on tools lol!
My comment should b first bc had them 2 years....
I just bought the icon line up for my job they are the truth…
I am no pro mechanic but you have to admit lifetime warranty for about the same price as truck brands and you can possibly get the same tool the same day at your local hf is a game changer and with for the most part a no questions asked warranty instead of waiting for the truck or sending it in the mail
Great advice on the clearance. Nothing worse than hitting the ground with a tool that’s too long.
I though I would used them more than I do, but ground clearance can be an issue if you are in tight places. People need to be aware of those things before they buy more expensive tools otherwise they just sit there collecting dust👍
I use my set on my pickup even when it’s not jacked up. But keep in mind these are expensive specialty tools. They can’t be used on every job because of their length, but that length really makes difficult jobs easy. .
ICON seems to be a fairly reasonable option for tool-truck grade tools at big box prices, and probably wont give you summer teeth.
Can you try the review pro stormer 14-piece flex-head ratcheting wrench set,
Just for relativity, what does it take to twist off grade 8 bolts of each size?
Art
I used the metric flank open ends to do alignments for a solid year, thousands. The wrenches held up great, the 13 showed the worst wear, white it still worked good it was missing all the teeth on the open end. Swapped them out for a nice new set with warranty.
I’ve only broken 1 harbor freight tool, and it was a Pittsburgh pro 1/2” ratcheting combo wrench. Bought it before icon came out, and harbor freight replaced it no problem
i might need to "upgrade" . i like the flex head . Right now my Kobalt "gearwrench knock offs" do the trick
good for HF to Warranty! I'll now get a set!
Make sure you really really need this set -vs- wanting it before running out and buying it. It’s a good set but it’s a lot to throw down for a DIYer
@@ClientGraphics I've been looking at them since they came out but will wait for a coupon that works with icon!

What size of hex bit? The hex socket ones or the L shaped Allen keys. I’m still behind on thing but I can put it on the list
@@ClientGraphics Oh hex bit sockets, also be neat to try a torx bit socket with spline style wrenchd.
Its nice to know there are people out there willing to sacrifice shiny new tools to gain knowledge on how much abuse these brands can take before it reaches the breaking point.
He didn't "sacrifice" anything; he wantonly destroyed tools, knowing they would be replaced. And it's not hard to suppose why these are now $225 in store instead of ~$150 like they used to be. Look, I appreciate knowing the limits of the tool, just as much as the next person, but it's not ethical to accept a free exchange, even if the exchange itself was part of the "test".
@@jonathanreeves4700 the rise in the cost of tools is due to our insane politics. Everything cost more in case you haven't noticed.

I love my ICON TOOLS, have not broken one yet
To stop the failures at the yoke . Need the manufacturer to change from pressed pins to custom Allen cap screws or rivets in counter bored holes to prevent spreading of the yoke. I have a great neck 38002 1/2" x24" breaker bar that way I cannot seem to break.
Might add a little thickness to get some good thread contact. It would help to make them field serviceable or to be able to swap heads. I know some companies have wanted this (Cornwell and Matco) but the manufacturer has been unwilling to make changes. Great potential just need a manufacturer that is open and willing to front the R&D cost
I just noticed that overhead camera. Is that new cause very cool.
I wanted to try and capture the visual on how much wrench flex there is depending on the size and torque. It’s actually a lot of work since it’s really like editing 3 videos that you have to sync and edit.
@@ClientGraphics The flex is why I noticed the camera. Maybe you can use a sharp finger snap. It can be easily cut out and should show up in the audio track of both cameras for alignment. You can set the overhead audio to zero when you don't need to alignment segments while editing. Just make more "snap" references where you think you'll need them.
I had bad experience with the Icon 1/4 inch flex head ratchet (jammed at times) and 3/8 deep sockets (8 of them cracked from light use). Albeit it was when they 1st came out so I assume it was probably lower quality when they 1st came out. I’ve heard mostly great things from them recently.
Chris G10 the Icon flex head ratchets and sockets did have some serious problems when they first came out. I got the non-flex head ratchets and they were fine. They are not my favorite from a price or quality standpoint.
