- Previously we’ve explored using Alpha textures to sculpt details, and how to make such textures yourself. But what if you want to add intricate details to a curved or even cylindrical surface where you can’t use a texture stencil? This is where masking is very useful.

not sure if this feature was available when this video was made, but for people watching this video now: I would suggest using the mesh filter brush and set it to inflate to inflate the unmasked areas. Then you can raise the unmasked areas evenly and faster. You can then also smooth with the mesh filter set to smooth.
Definitely one of the most inventive methods I've seen. Really cool. Thank you.
exactly fast and clean
Like 70% of my progress in blender is thanks to this channel.
Thank you!
how do you calculate that ??
A beautifully succinct channel which leaves me in awe of both Blender and the folks who really know how to make it jump, unlike us mortals who only use it on a daily basis 😄😄👍
Everything this channel shows is so inspiring. I always want to drop what I'm doing and give it a go!
Very cool method. Especially for carvings like art, embossing. Never though of that before. Thanks!
Quick, easy and to the point. You've earned a subscriber!
Please make a longer video discussing the different techniques of “when to use and why”.
A more comprehensive video if you will.
Yeah, thinking about it!
Can you also make a tutorial on how you did the sword handle texture? the scuplted details arent dirty but the rest of the metal is! love your work
Well there is a better option than using the inflate brush which is using Mesh Filter set to Inflate :D
This way you inflate everything at once in the same proportion, then there is also a Sharpen mode also to the Mesh Filter which can be used to sharpen the edges.
Thanks for the tip, I didn’t think of the Mesh Filter!
Thank you 🎉
Blender has definitely also become a really good sculpting software now.
It's not bad! Definitely not yet as fast with large meshes as ZBrush, and I'd love to have a couple of good planar brushes but it's come a long way and it's great to have those tools available in a normal mesh modeling environment, like the Grab brush can be very convenient.
@@BlenderSecrets Right. Sculpting was, imho, the worst Blender's Achilles heel; how could we make proper 3D modeling without a decent sculpting function? At least Blender has a decent one today. Ok, for basic stuff but hopefully it will get even better.
Other than slightly better performance there's almost no difference between sculpting on blender today and 5 years ago unless you've embraced all the new tools added by Pablo Dobarro. If you don't use those tools much there's almost no change. If you think it's good enough now, it was probably also good enough 5 years ago.
@@myztazynizta It's surely better than 19 years ago. 😁
i love hearing the first few taps and then this guys accent, i know its gonna be a good tutorial every time
Haha, thanks :-)
Those short Blender Secrets vid formula is just too good, you hear me, it's TOO GUD ! XD
the most useful channel on the secrets of the blender
Thank you
How do you draw such beautiful designs effortlessly
it was THIS easy???!!! thank you so much
Thank you so much!! I have been struggling for days to find a way to sculpt the texture for a very thick sock in blender and this one minute tutorial is the best way!1
Blender Sculptpainting by Blender Secrets 🖌🗿, works great, thank you
to inflate everything at once use the mesh filter and set it to Inflate. ;)
Yeah this is an invaluable technique, but completely neglects what the mesh filter brush is for. Mesh filter does all your inflating instantly and consistently.
@@BlenderDaddy that little bit of 'human error' and variation in stroke has its place👍😎
Splendid as always
The best channel with short tips!
Thank you!
Thank you :-)
short and straightforward, great tuts!
Wonderfull little trick. :) I so much like your book and your videos. They are always an answer to the strugles I encounter. Please, keep on going
Why u so underrated iv been here since the days of few subs glad th see u grow this much since then
Thanks! Growing steadily, hope to reach 100K by the end of the year 🤞
I juste tried this on a dagger and it's awesom
Just helped me with exactly what I needed for this project, thanks!
Man, that's extremely useful. Thanks man.
Incredible. I thank you!
I was thinking about how did he draw beautiful ornament and watched the video.
In the video " Draw some masks" .
I was like...Hum...ok...
Haha... This is a great tips anyway.
Big fan here.
Thanks you for every videos.
This is absolutely fantastic!!!
INCREÍBLE eres todo un maestro.. Es todo un placer disfrutar de tus técnicas de diseño. Saludos
your channel is wonderful 🤩
i needed this so baaad
So basically it's like 3D Coat ... Damnnnnnn 🔥🔥🔥
this is fantastic! thanks so much man
Perfect ! Perfect !!
Thank You 💗
I alaways feel wonder after seeing your tutorials
pure&simple info.
thank you so much!
Your drawing is really cool
Thanks! I like drawing swirly lines...
Thank you sm!!
Awesome 😍😍😍👏👏
EXCUSE ME??!! THAT'S REALLY EASY AND REALLY SIMPLE
Brilliant!!!
Thanks!
EXCELENTE .. Saludos desde Chile.
so cool 👌
Should definitely be using mesh filter to get even extrusion everywhere rather than painting inflation
Depends on what you want. Not all stone carvings are perfect.
wonderful thank you for your WISDOMMMMMMMMMM : )
Amazing
There should be a way to bake that on a normal/displacement map, but i only know a way for projecting from view for flat surfaces. Can you please do tutorial for the curved parts? I think many would appreciate that
Okay, I may do this next week
perfect 👍
thank !
Why haven't I heard of this channel :O
Bravo 👏💖
wow that texture in the end looked nice.. made in blender too?
No, the texture was made in Substance Painter ;-)
@@BlenderSecrets ohh great!, it looks very nice, i really would love to do something like that, thank you.
Большое спасибо!
For fast and efficient inflate use Mesh Filter.
Is there any way to load a texture as we do in the materials tab and then use that as a mask, like a black-and-white texture
Wow 😯
VERYY NOOICCCEEE
Yes.
pro gamer move
The finishing material is very good. Is it possible to give it here?
Thanks! I’ll see if I can do some topics about creating nice materials.
@@BlenderSecrets it would be great
i must admitted to your so usefull for blender people. easy fast and usefull ... also your voice fking relaxing dude ... try some audio books :D
Thank you!
@@BlenderSecrets GG man
" tutorial s that work for all versions " mostly for users like me that still using 2.79 this mask one was awsome
I feel like you guys are watching me and giving me tips on every problem I run into
Very useful! How did you texture the sword?
Substance Painter ;-)
@@BlenderSecrets Oh ok, thanks!
Is there a way to draw straight lines with the brush?
Is it possible to make those strokes without a tablet?
Hmm, I'd say that's quite a challenge! In that case I'd try to use the previously explained method of using alpha textures. Or you could use curves and lay them directly on top of the surface, I also explained that process before: ruclips.net/video/IQrLlJFdwTY/видео.html
Is there a way to do this with only the maps? Like, I love details like this but I need to keep my models very low poly. Can I still use this but not keep it on the finished model itself?
Ok this beautiful but... Isnt there a simpler way, let's say to scale the whole thing out? So that All the Details extrude evenly?
can it be engraved and not surface graved? i would like to make a design but i want it engraved not on the surface please let me know if you have a video on this thanks
Do you still have retopo after making the details?
Is there a particular setting for the brush to be so clear ? Or is it the geometry?
How much book cost?
How long you use Blender?
The Blender Secrets e-book costs 35 EUR (+ VAT in some cases, depending on your country) You can find out more here: blendersecrets.gumroad.com/l/IxofeY or here blendermarket.com/products/blender-secrets I don’t remember how long I used Blender…
Can i use this function by adding a B/W image and using that image as Mask?
what if I want to carve instead?
Awesome , there is something i wanna ask do you use graphic tablet ??
For this yes, an old (but still very good!) Wacom intuos 2.
Muito legal
Please share some tips about shader or material making . texturering secrets
I’m thinking about some topics like that!
@@BlenderSecrets thank you so much 🙏
I really love your content It's really very helpful.
gents , how i can apply the sculpting ? when i return to object mode the drawing hidden and only showing in sculpt mode please advise .
Yes, it's a sculpt mask so it makes sense that it only shows in Sculpt mode. What do you want to do with it in Object mode?
👍👍
how do you make the dirt between curve. thanks
The easy way is to just bake some masks - ambient occlusion, bevel, etc - and then use those to drive masks so you combine materials where needed.
@@BlenderSecrets Thats really helpful, thank you
❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥
Can we use the mask to seperate the both parts for adding different materials?
Laso mask can be used to actually split the model in 2 different 3D models. But adding different materials is better done while texturing where... yes you have to use 2D texture mask there too.
Is there a way to save the mask as a texture or something to use again later?
That’s a great question! I posted it as a question on Twitter, if I get a good answer I’ll reply here.
Since im not good at drawing, is it possible to use a picture as a mask and place it on the object?
ruclips.net/video/6xcUQNwDRps/видео.html
@@BlenderSecrets thank you!
I would like to know how finely divided the polygons are in the sword model.
Oh, this was originally a very dense model, 15 million-ish Faces. Then reduced with decimation to about 250k. It’s easier for sculpting and even for texturing in some way (procedural masks for cavities etc like more geometry). You can always bake it down to a low poly mesh.
@@BlenderSecrets Thank you. I will study more based on that information. : )
And don't forget to decimate
why clear mask if it can be mask for texturing? or you paint mask for shading again by hand?
Yes, if you want you can use it for texturing as well! In this case, I didn’t.
now if only I could use so much geometry in animation without retoplology and baking, that would be awesome lol
Hmm, I guess you could just use a proxy mesh in the viewport, and render the high res version?
@@BlenderSecrets what? Never heard of it, maybe a material for a next video? :)
anyway, sometimes render crashes with big scenes, so if it`s only for viewport it doesn`t make much sense
plz i want to know how did you texture like that?
I used Substance Painter on this one because I was in a hurry, but you can also do this in Blender. I’ll see if I can do some topics about that.
Thank you for the reply! And plz do
Hi. The mask brush does not do what yours does for me. What else did you do? It is not leaving nearly as defined color if any at all.
How did you make it look so fine (mine is pixelated)
I think it depends on your mesh resolution. As he said in 0:11
Try adding subdivision level if you use multires modifier or use smaller voxel size if using remesh.
I'm not expert at sculpting though...
it doesn't help. They look like disconnected diamonds and triangles, it is a whole mess :(
It you can see triangles you definitely don't have enough resolution. But also it sounds like there might be more going on with your mesh. Like maybe it's got very variable geometry like a decimated mesh, or a 3D scan. Hard to say without looking at it.
Maybe you are using Dyntopo? 🤔 Dynamic Topology, where the density of geometry is only concentrated on some place where you polish it.
Mainly there are 2 ways of sculpting approach: dyntopo and multires modifier.
Try watching Grant Abbitt's video about sculpting for beginners.

Is there a way to save the mask, so that you can make other masks. Then later on you go back to the previous mask?
That’s a great question Nathan, thanks. I believe this is possible by converting the mask to a Vertex Group. Using the Mask Tools Add-on. I’ll try to do a video on it next week!
@@BlenderSecrets thanks, very much appreciate it
I’m using blender 3.3.0 ....every time I use the (Mask) >>> blender shutdown directly....... anyone here had the same problem and solved it?!
Your truley fucking insane bro
👍👍👍👍
Forget about that, can I have you drawing skills?
Heh heh, it’s no skill, just some mindless noodling with the pen!
@@BlenderSecrets Well, I wish I was that mindless.... with the mouse :(
