    Here I give a review of Brush-On 40 mold making urethane rubber from Smooth-On. I demonstrate how I mix and apply it for small surface molds using a GW building. I share some tips and tricks for getting good results and show some completed molds that were previously made.

    sorry about the kitty. he was a highlight of some of the videos. I loved him

      Thank you. I've been a bit surprised at how much I still miss him. :( I've had a lot of cats over the years, but he seems to have made a special place in my heart.

    Cracking product overview! Glad to see you're converting to my way of filming .... one take with the out-takes in the middle! Looking forward those mold making tutorials mate

      Well, for this video it had to be one take. ;) But, I'm trying to adjust a little as a I go along. With the double camera set up, I really need to trim something somewhere. It has added a lot more to the editing than I expected.

    Your problem with the camera on the right is that you "cross the line" when you cut to it. Your hands go from being on the right hand side of the screen pointing left, to the left hand side pointing right. This is a continuity problem.
    Your screen position of subject matter should match from shot to shot.

      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      TheDMGinfo Thanks. I hadn't considered the continuity of the shot. I've seen that addressed in some video guides here on RUclips. I am going to move the close up camera to the left, but I'll look into the how to arrange them both to make the transitions have a continuous perspective. :)

      What might also "save" you time is shooting the visuals of the presentation and then doing a voice over once the edit is complete. Especially for tutorial type videos. For reviews, not so much. This way you can show a whole build in a shorter amount of time without having to reshoot because of audio issues.
      I can sometimes shoot 40 minutes of footage and just cut down to the the essential information which is only 3-4 minutes. Then I record the audio, which limits me to that 3-4 minutes.

      Interesting idea. I'll have to keep that in mind in the future. Thanks. :)

    Nice video, you might try running a 'print coat' first with a thin layer of rubber (not a brush on rubber, unless you thin it down). I brush it on even though its quite runny, but the lower viscosity rubber creates far less surface bubbles. Once you have the print coat, lay the brush on rubber as thick as you want. I know its two steps, but the thinned rubber will make a very very clean surface to cast into. Also, Smooth-On makes brush on plastic that would be perfect for the overhang you demolded in this video. It uses up less material and you don't have to fuss with something to hold your piece level while pouring. You do usually have to sand or grind down the backside to make it flat but it ends up costing a lot less in the long run for materials.

      I usually use a print coat when doing a brush on mold. Here, since the rubber starts as a brush on it didn't occur to me. (I usually use a thixotropic to thicken silicones for instance.) However, I have seen that you can thin Brush-On 40 with mineral spirits so getting a few good initial detail layers would be possible. It's an important step. :) Brush on plastics are something I haven't really experimented with. Thank you for mentioning it. :)

    lol mini review, usually people just read the product description :D
    I recommend you put the close up camera to your left or above...

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      lichtsuchender I did put a note in the video saying I would be moving it to the left. ;) I plan on having it a little more forward as well. And... I'm going to raise up the main camera just a touch and move it to the right. Then it will capture what I am working on with out my hand always in the way. :) I'll have to get used to it though, since I just seem to always think of the camera over my left shoulder. ;)

    you can clean your brushes with acetone, i work everyday with molds for my work and when we get in over our hands or other work material you can easely clean it of with acetone ;D just a quicktip :p

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      jochem petit Actually, that is a good point. I have cleaned smaller brushes in acetone when using them for mold making rubber or resin. I probably should do it for the brush I used as well. It has more Indonesian wood in it than the tiny craft stick. ;) Thanks for pointing it out.

    This was a really interesting review.
    You said you have to use it up. Are we speaking about months or weeks?

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад +1

      Within a month or two would be best. It can depend on the ambient humidity. Wait... I forgot I have some other urethane rubber that I have in a bag with 'Damp Be Gone'. That really helps its shelf life. I need to get it into that bag today. :)

    I personally like the live takes, you should do more of them.

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      exodous02 Well, if I do more 'in process' types of videos, re-shoots become a much bigger chore. ;) I'm glad you liked the candid nature. I take that into consideration.

    You're awesome. I really enjoyed watching this video. I actually stumbled on it, i was looking for something else.
    I already know how to make molds, but you are so amusing the beginning of the video, I had to watch the whole thing.
    Thanks for making this video

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      TT-Lenny´s Gaming News, Terrain & GamingTable Service I have to say, it's the best brush on mold rubber I have tried so far. Of course, it's a urethane so that comes with it's own considerations, but I think it is a good choice. If I had any real concern, it's that the shelf life is much shorter than a silicone. So it's a 'use it up!' material. :)

    Aren't you stirring the wrong part? The paste is part b says he label?

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      Hmm... You raise an interesting point. ;) I had to look again at the video to check. Seems I didn't follow the directions properly. *shrug* I didn't think the paste needed stirring since it doesn't settle. I'll add an annotation to that section of the video as a warning. Thanks for pointing it out... And I said 'I can read'.. ;)

    • @hedefalk
      @hedefalk 10 лет назад

      :) yeah, a bit weird to stir up a paste, right? Maybe it's even a typo and you did it right? Just noticed the labels was the opposite of what you said on the vid.

      Viktor Hedefalk
      Well, they are pretty specific. I had a Smooth-On rep come by and I learned that I had been mixing some things wrong. Not the wrong part, but not mixing it correctly. These things can sometimes be a little picky. :)

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      Karsten Fjellheim A viewer suggested it so that it would stand out a bit more. I played around with it for a while, and I think it looks a touch heavy handed, but I've got other things on the to-do list that I need to work on first. ;) Opinions on its look are always welcome.

    Great review! I could care less about the length of the video because I know that you're always thorough and you provide as much pertinent info as possible. I appreciate the effort. :)

      Thank you. :) I have gotten less concerned with the lengths of the videos, but since this is supposed to be a 'mini' review, I wanted to mention that it isn't. **grin**

    how do you cast a flat mold with no lip. I am having a bad time with that

    • @Terranscapes
      @Terranscapes  10 лет назад

      I built a clay dam around the mold. It worked 'o.k.' but I wouldn't recommend it for any type of regular casting. For a couple of quick casts, it did the job. The resin leaked a fair amount and de-molding and cleaning were more work than I expected.

    • @TheGrungy1
      @TheGrungy1 10 лет назад

      I tried that and had the same problem.
