In real life, people wouldn't laugh at the sight of someone being 'pantsed', we'd all collectively cringe on their behalf.

Cthonis Princess in movies they never display cringe , like omg it’s just hahahahahaaaaaa 😂 like what, most ppl will not look at that and be awkward about it , i mean they’ll be ppl who will laugh but not the whole school, most ppl won’t ever see it , like maybe 10 ppl max and i’m exaggerating 😂

one is that everybody knows your name but doesn't necessarily like you except for your own small click, so more or less they choose to ignore you so you kind of just become everybody else.
Or two that you're actually genuinely a nice person and you may just have a variety of Interest so you end up with a large friend group or acquaintance group.

You're right no one in high school acts like this. Honestly everyone considers the losers to be the people who are genuine assholes and not the "nerds/weird kids". Hell, in my school people were a little impressed if you were smarter than average. High schoolers aren't even really paying attention to popularity anymore. I mean you have the well liked kids but no one's really concerning themselves with where they fall on the "social hierarchy". Everyone kinda minds their own business.

    • @jupiterdoe1776
      @jupiterdoe1776 6 лет назад +53

Menfhis24 I agree, for the most part, the "nerds" are respected for being smart. You cant really hate someone for being smart, people just get impressed and amusrd at how they did so well on a test or a project or something. I feel like friend groups are a lot more personality based rather than social standings and people tend to keep to themselves *unless* soemone is being outwardly offensive.
And yeah well liked kids or "popular" kids are just charismatic people who get along with people, they are liked because they are likeable and nice, not because they are snobby and rich

@@TwelvetreeZ I also agree, I think the trope that the popular kids basically rule the school and everyone else bows down before them is extremely over played. At my high school, popular kids kinda just do their own thing and there are popular kids in each grade and people who aren't exactly popular hang out with popular kids just because. Additionally, I hate the fact that in high school movies.only 2-3 people are allowed to be at the top of the popularity food chain when that's hardly the case.

Let's not forget that these movies encourage some crazy internalized misogyny in their female viewership. Like, how many of us went through that, "All girly things are rubbish, I'm not shallow like that, I only like GOOD stuff" stage? Popular evil girl tropes are almost entirely fictionalized, because generally IRL most popular girls are nice people, but these movies will never have that.
(I also have a little pet theory that a lot of the people who work on these movies project their own rubbish HS experiences in writing high school characters, and the cycle continues)

I really wish the "Popular Bitch" trope would die.
Most popular girls are popular because they're nice and have good personalities. And I knew a lot of popular girls in middle and high school who weren't even all that conventionally attractive; people just gravitated towards them because they were fun to be around. And, inversely, I knew of a lot of physically beautiful girls who didn't have boys eating out of their hand because they were either introverts or jerks.
Not to say popular bullies don't exist. But these movies tend to paint pretty/popular girls in an unsettling, misogynistic light. And as an adult, you can see how a lot of these high school movies were written by bitter adult males who are projecting their hatred of chicks who spurned them in high school by portraying them as sluts/bitches/sociopaths/etc.

    • @444-o2w

Wait, they're Jewish? Wow, okay. So, in truth, the Torah doesn't have anything prohibiting dating or premarital relations. That isn't to say the character's parents could've had a rule about him being a "good boy" but if the whole point is to make him the "Jewish kid" niche, then I sincerely have to question the directors' understanding of their own religion. Literally no one acts like that?? I.... I don't know what to say. It just doesn't add up.

Most of the people watching this show aren't popular and the assumed notion that they're fanbases are made up of kids who feel alienated because they aren't popular. The most logical antagonist to that protagonist is those who are actually popular is to villify them and show them as assholes' whose only redeeming qualities are their surface level attractiveness and physical ability

The "gay kid is the outcast" theme was a thing in this movie because it was written by a 40-year-old who was a teenager back in the days where gay kids legitimately lived in fear of getting their asses kicked if they were outed in school. He thinks gay kids are tortured in high school because that's how it was when he was a kid and he's too stupid to realize that teenagers have changed with the times

I watched this movie on a whim when it dropped on Netflix and oh wooowww it was so bad. You didn't mention this, but personally, the worst part was when they had the main dude explain to the girl and us, the audience, the premise of beloved anime Fullmetal Alchemist. I love that show, I enjoyed it a lot as a kid, but I was SO EMBARRASSED listening to this dude talk about it and THEY DIDN'T EVEN FADE OUT OR CUT TO A DIFFERENT SCENE he legit EXPLAINS the show for maybe an entire minute and I hate this word but I cringed myself halfway to death. It was awful.
And honestly, I have to disagree with you on 18:39 I think he has a pretty valid personal grievance considering they were childhood friends and she abandons him when he needed her. As a friend, one she's known for so long, she actually does have a responsibility to stand up for him because that's what you do for friends. That's actually what you should do for strangers, but not everyone is capable of it, so AT THE VERY LEAST stand up for your childhood friends. And while I don't think people are ALWAYS as bad as abusers when they let abuse slide, I think they're very close. Especially people in positions of power, like the girl, who was really popular and could've helped him considering being in 1 photo of her made him popular in the movie. Like, she could've done something, she just chose not to and that's pretty fucked up. Sorry, this is probably more thought that this movie requires, but I'm a firm believer of doing the right thing when you're in the position to.

Yeah, I agree that while I didn't see the movie... she probably should of said something considering the other popular people were being dicks. As in, you really shouldn't be a bystander of bullying.

I half disagree with you--I think she had the responsibility to stand BY him, not stand UP FOR him. I think it was his own job to stand up for himself, but she shouldn't have ditched him, and she should have told her friends to stop being jerks to her friend, and in that way she could have stood up for him. But she definitely shouldn't have abandoned him for the "cool" people.

Nobbie @ Nobbie Omg yes, that scene made me rethink my life choices for a minute there, lmao (still love the show tho)! Also, you are right about the whole standing by while people are being tormented by others. Either she or someone else should have said/done something about it.
