It plays really well into the philosophy that life is tragic and brutal in an acute sense, but when you zoom out and look at life it can be quite comical. You can definitely feel and hear that duality in the heavyness of their songs alongside the whimsical fuckery they play. I love it.
Well that and the fact that they are "all" mostly classically trained, Serj is very smart about music and uses that to mix genres and themes, the rest of the group are also incredibly talented and intelligent about music and the metal genre as a whole, put that together with a little bit of Armenian history/politics and you can get some very interesting themes. They really do everything because Serj and Damian pushed the writing so hard sometimes. Damian literally took a generic idea, using a old home video as a catalyst and then the mixed like 5 genres of music into it, yet it was done so well that Radio/Video remains as one of there tops songs. They are not only incredibly talented but they use their own personalities and intelligence to the fullest.

Like come on they wrote a heavy ass song about being addicted to PIZZA PIES with pepperoni, green peppers, mushrooms, olives, and chives because of that pizza’s advertising and now have to go to therapy to undo the effects of the advertising campaign’s hypnotic effects to constantly consume Pizza Pies. it’s fucking genius.

The craziness like that is what made Serj and SOAD special to me. Yeah I love heavy metal more than anything; but when u add the comedy, something that most people would probably never think to do, your like WTF? And who doesn’t love a good WTF moment? That’s what made them special and unique; I like different, I like unique. The rest of the band should appreciate that, I can understand the fear of not being taken seriously as a metal musician; but they made incredibly heavy, yet funny and sweet heartfelt lyrics. I laughed, I rocked out, I was educated, and to some I cried. Give me an emotional roller coaster, make me feel something I never felt before, make me think of something I never thought of. That’s why I will always love SOAD forever!
There's a video i watched with a comment saying "Soad is the type of band to write a song named 'puppies' and it being overthrowing the government" and i agree even more with this now seeing this.
At a certain point, you just start playing with shit. You might break a few things, but the worst that could happen is starting over. You break things enough though, and you start getting a feel for what works. And sometimes, you can go past breaking it and just start rearranging the pieces into absolute godsdamned ART. I think that's a problem with a lot of people past a certain point of "professionalism", they don't let themselves experiment or risk or have fuckin FUN, and they drag that onto everyone else for some forsaken reason!!!

As a metal fan, taking it too seriously is a huge mistake. Most metal songs have a strong, serious message, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with throwing in a little wackiness in there once in a while. Fun is also pretty metal.
I saw them at Harpo's in East Detroit opening up for Slayer, before they really popped. The Slayer crowd boo'd them offstage. They were great though. Tough crowd.
