Best Sunday school I’ve been to since I was a kid. Anything with Kirby artwork just makes me nostalgic and happy. OMAC and Captain Victory is another of my favorites from Kirby’s imagination.
Masterful reading, and exceptional 80’s Darkseid animated voice! I’ve been retreading this series and I marveled at how much the 90’s animated Superman show got right! They really did justice to Kirby’s vision. You can see it in the Prometheon and the episode where Kalibak and Orion come to earth. Might make a good combination with the total recall show reviews when you get to those issues.
trolls riding on wolves and being themselves wolves comes from norse mythology. with a lot of the norse stuff they used a lot of names interchangably and often did not have a master narrative between parts of the norse culture ,
I'm currently reading Kirby's fourth world for the first time. The absolute version dispite the glossy pages. Is amazing to read. Oversized Kirby art is a must own.
One last comment, the comparisons to MoTU and Starwars- - - maybe the thing New Gods needed to push it to the next level was a badass sword. If only he had given Orion a sword. Like if the only thing that could kill Darkseid was a legend of Zelda Mastersword
Also, with you doing the reading it’s becoming evident what the Stan Lee contribution is to Jacks stories. Jack is the Ultimate nerd, the God of Nerds and the last person who cares about nerdy stuff is Stan Lee.... I can imagine some of the line changes Stan would add to ‘dumb’ some things down. And i don’t mean that as an insult whatsoever
I agree. Kirby's ideas are great but his execution isn't always equal to the idea. Dialigue is sometimes painful and often a lot of the characters are indistinguishable from each other. Not slamming him - he is the King - but his strong suits are drawing and grand ideas.
I know that Marvel and DC have taken ideas from each other, but it is heinous that Marvel appropirated these characters and concepts for their own use after passing on Kirby's vision. Kirby's estate should be getting royalties every time Thaos shows up in media.
I believe Vince Colleta has been slandered. I’ve worked with enough inkers to know if one does something that’s unacceptable they don’t get worked with again. Jack KEPT working with Vince. You think about Dan Green- there’s a reason Silvestri and Jim Lee never worked with him again after a certain point . Jim Lee worked with a laundry list of also-ran inkers at Image but not Dan Green. And Dan Green is far more regarded than Vince Colleta

A new gods movie directed by james gunn would be awesome. Orion is such an underrated hero in DC.
