  • Across the country on Monday, people looked up to catch a glimpse of the eclipse. Steve Hartman was more interested in the sight on the ground when his astronomy-loving son got to see it. They went "On the Road" to Nebraska for the experience.

I really look forward to Steve Hartman's pieces. They're not about politics, fires, floods, death & mayhem. They portray what life is about, what concerns the common folk of America. They tell how children feel about life, about the poor, veterans, and the factory worker going to buy his first brand new car. About random acts of kindness. That's the kind of news I'm interested in. Regardless of what salary CBS is paying him, he deserves a raise. He's the kind of guy I would like to share a burger & a beer with, to have as my neighbor, to confide my deepest, darkest concerns with. Just a really nice guy.

I remember the story Mr. Hartman did about his infant son and babies and how cute they are (or are not). His son's focus and love of astronomy I'm sure is difficult on a daily basis for his little brother but I'm sure he'll appreciate his big brother more and more as the years go on. :) Thank you for the many stories that connect us to each other. We certainly need those stories more than ever. May God bless you and your family always.

A "shrewd" idea... haha kids are the best! you literally can't make this stuff up! Steve Hartman is such a great reporter and human, and now we can add father to that list!

I enjoyed this segment. George was more than happy to share his knowledge of astronomy. This was a great Dad moment for Steve. Thank you sharing that will all of us.

He sounds very mature for a 3rd grader. Reminds me of myself when I was his age.

4 thumbs down as of Feb 2019, perhaps if they’d had the paternal influence and nurturing kindness of a gem like Steve, things might be looking.....“up”

My daughter was exactly the same, only her area of interest was animals, from reptiles to sharks and dogs and cats. She didn’t read only reference books until 2d grade, and even then her fiction boks even were all the Harry Potter, one right after the other. She, too, could talk about her fave topic endlessly. Adults used to consult with her about which dog they should get for their family because she knew so much about each of the many breeds. And today? She breeds Bedlington Terriers and one of her dogs won an Award of Merit at the Westminster Dog Show in NY. I wonder where Steve’s son will go? It will be tough, no doubt, but having his parents fully support his interest is very helpful.

We are planning on going down to Texas for the next one...good time with your sons. It was well worth it.

Nice story indeed. I envy those kids who have a father that actually cares and spends time with them. I hope someday that they know how truly lucky they are. Now Steve do you think it is too late to adopt a 61 year old so I can do cool things with you?
