It's funny, you say the team wasn't obsessed with realism when it came to the goggles... but apparently Tom Clancy was. The story goes that the team had to push really REALLY hard against Tom Clancy who wanted the multi-feature goggles to be separate items you'd have to swap in and out of because of how fantasy tech something like that was at the time. It took repeated discussions for the team at Ubisoft to convince him that it would slow down the pace too much before he relented. If only he were still kicking today to see the new thermal overlay night vision. Funny that he was up in arms about the goggles but not the quieter than an air gun 40mm grenade launcher that fires tiny cameras that'll put a man down in seconds from an aerosolized sleeping agent...
It was a compromise, not a surrender. The three tubes are for the three different vision modes. That way he doesn't have to carry three different pairs of goggles. I'd imagine the original design probably looked something like the binocular or biocular NVGs that were popular at the time, with the added science fiction element of being able to swap both tubes to other modes. What they came up with instead was a much more elegant and grounded solution. Also the PSQ-20A was invented two years later, although I hear it was annoying to use
I know what you mean man, but enjoy the quiet while it lasts because I'm 100% sure this channel will be huge sometime soon, talent like his dosent stay hidden for ever. It just takes that one video to get noticed and people will start flocking in
The ONLY annoying thing about Splinter Cell, was when it first came out, EVERYBODY I knew was acting like if a game didn't have destructible lights that would change the brightness of a room, it was somehow inferior. lmao. Great video as always, dude!!!
@ lol, I kinda get that. But this was people thinking something like…I dunno, Halo or Metroid Prime would somehow have been better if you could make the room dark.
Great job, dude. And I'm glad that you kept those early, older videos around. It was really neat to go back and watch them after finding your channel whenever ago. Foundations. Progress! I'm so sorry you had to play the PC version of Splinter Cell for this updated review...poor guy! 😆I did a proper SC/PT/CT back-to-back run several years ago and it was glorious. The ole classics, guv'nor. I too love the atmosphere in many of the levels, and as a resident of VA the CIA level just hits a certain kind of way, with the gorgeous foliage in the background being the same thing I see here in the Fall. Sneaking past the soft glow of computer monitors in dark offices after hours in a highly secure gov facility with a rain storm just outside the windows is freaking chef's kiss, man. The NPC conversations in this game were so damn good. Reminds me of the humorous dialogue from NOLF and other games from back in the day. I hate that games like this are considered too "risky" to make these days because production costs have ballooned so much that if it just makes an okay profit instead of OMG ma$$ appeal numbers, it's considered a failure. Seems everybody but the indie studios be chasin' them Nicki Minaj dollas these days.
@ facts and same with the pistol that turns lights off. I also liked how they changed the lighting system its not supper dark where you can’t see I also liked how each level you can do the objectives in any order tackle the mission anyway you like it was a semi open environment
After recently replaying SC, I gotta say I see more Thief influences than from MGS. SC, especially Chaos Theory is like the next step in the light, shadow & sound mechanics. As well, Ironside had the funniest interrogation dialogue in CT. It's so funny to listen to them to this day. Pandora Tomorrow I think has cool corner switching moves, and an underrated jungle camo suite. If the remake uses bits of pices from every SC game until and including Double Agent (corner abductions), it would be a great game.
Thank you for confirming the GameCube version is just a tad more difficult then the other versions. Played this with my dad back at launch on the cube. Love the vids and the tunes, keep kicking ass and making cool shit
You were right with predicting I’d love this! Expect an edit on this comment later 💀 Damn 10:00 25:56 extra fun fact, you may know this if you’re super active on the cut content side of the SC subreddit like I am, but Sam was originally gonna be given a UMP instead of the SC20k and there’s an actual model for it too. That’s if the plan succeeds, I doubt it will though. 44:36 exactly how I feel with Ubisoft, I hope they do turn themselves around at some point. On top of that I wish more of my generation understood why I love SC so much. (At least I’m finally convincing my cousin to try SC) Last of the edits I promise lmao
Ey bro, Really good vid. Even though I'm an MG Die Hard (koj gen, not now) I admit chaos theory and the og DA game perfected stealth in the espionage genre. While I played this on ps2 way back, and again on ps3 via there HD collection (1hr on pc), the first one never really left an impact on me as much as the asfor mentioned games. SC1 was really good yes, but it really didn't hit its stride yet. whenever I do dive back in for my nostalgia fix it's always chaos and DA. same deal with mgs1, the mechanics that really make mgs fun to play starts in 2. keep up the good work, look forward to the next
Fantastic start of a fantastic series of games. Very nice review! Every year I replay SC:CT at least once, this year I'll throw in the first one and PT. They're all still super fun to play and age very gracefully.
Your videos made me start playing splinter cells and seeing them using mouse scroll for moving speed was a really interesting choice that I loved. Well that and crouching while falling to do a silenced landing
The biggest issue with going back to the old Splinter Cell's isn't graphics, atmosphere, story-telling, etc. It's simply mechanics. It's just not very ergonomic by today's standards. More than a remake, (which I lack faith that Ubisoft could even do well) I'd be so down for an overhaul mod that simplified and smoothed over some controls.
That’s primarily my gripe. The gun play just feels cumbersome, use of melee feels off, and the control scheme is just odd. Still think Splinter Cell is bar none the most neglected IP. I really want it to be revived.
i dont really agree- the first and second games are more like a puzzle game than they are a power fantasy (like the 3rd entry onwards). to me, the rigidity is a central part of their charm.
@@epochphilosophy yeah so the gunplay, had too much bloom and the aiming controls were weird, i'm not gonna lie. i dont know if you've played the last of us 2 but the gunplay should be like that ideally. and the melee system is bad in this one, agreed. i suppose it was the first one thats why but something like chaos theory melee in the remake would be great. the controls do need updating. agreed and it is the most neglected IP - hope its brought back in a great way
This got recommended by RUclips to me. So many good memories with these games when i was a kid. I remember running out of ammo in what I think was the CIA HQ and having to rely on shooting enemies in the face with cameras to knock them out. Besr stealth game i've played besides Thief Gold
So... regarding the finicky cable slide on the oil rig, all you have to do is press the crouch button so Sam lifts his legs and slides faster. That will prevent you from falling into the water at the end. Simple. Also, that path on the beams leading to the boat is completely new to me (23 years! lol). The "correct" one for me was always climbing up (I think there are two options, one of which will always get you spotted, but the other is fine) and then using the pipe to get to the other side. Edit: In the CIA HQ mission, the entry with the fans is on the opposite side, in an area surrounded by a fence. The roof-to-lobby path you take in the video is the "optional" one in case you can´t make it before the fans start again. Edit 2: I wholeheartedly agree on the soothing, slow-paced nature of the game, especially the rainy nighttime office levels (CIA and Shanghai ftw!). It´s one of the (many) reasons I love coming back to it.
What a great video and music...well said in all chapters! The way you play Splinter Cell I think is very close to what the devs intended...to feel being there, to make a movie with it...inside the matrix they so carefully created as you pointed! I hope as well the new remake will be "true" rich in content done with passion...with heart! Again well done and said!

red cells pretty crazy, i think its a good thing we have something like that, to test our homeland security. its probably a fun really sought-after job.
So let me tell ya. I loved the 1st Splinter Cell Game, which I played it with the german voice over, which wasn't bad. But the story wasn't to me exciting enough, so it was more the Gameplay and the Stealth Mechanics. Gamecube Port is a framerate desaster same like a Rainbow Six Game on GC. Splinter Cell 1 & Thief 3 were the Games I was completely into stealth games. Why so late, cos Hitman 1 broke me & 2 was strange with the mission with the ninjas in the house. I was more happy with Blood Money which I finsihed it years ago.
i bought this game on steam but not sure if i should maybe play chaos theory first since everybody praises it so much also, very enjoyable vid as always
You should look "Chameleon". A stealth game published by Illusion Softworks only in Europe. It has really good art design, similar mechanics to Splinter Cell and pacing. It uses the Mafia's engine. Good review.
I got into splintercell when I was around 12 on my school loaned computer and I would play it in about any class I could, I unfortunately for the most part experienced both pandora tomorrow and the first with no sound as headphones weren't and are still not allowed and the same goes with slacking off, I'm turning 17 this year!! I'm so glad SC is getting a netflix series, I ws so happy to see the teaser, to see shetlands name, I love splintercell with a passion and it sucks the series is basically dead. I keep coming back to the series as nothing quite scratches that itch like SC does, I really hope the series re-emerges from the shadow.
I always compared Splinter Cell to Metal Gear Solid in a lot of ways too. I only ever played a smidgen of both and for years I would constantly mix them up in conversation about one or the other 😂
i don't know if the remake is ever even gonna happen at this point, but god it would be so good to get a full return to form for Splinter Cell. also, how do you feel about the Thief series?
What’s with the ubiquitous open world slander all of a sudden? It feels like it got really big some time in 2024? I’ve been on that soapbox for over a decade feeling like a lunatic, man! I’m glad we’re finally getting some more linear games again, but what’s driving this shift now?
you see how long this video is?? that's how long you should make a video. i saw a 4 and half hour long video from fuzzy slippers about red dead 2 and its just too long.
Love the first 5 "Splinter cell" games, the remake will be a huge bag of shite riddled with white guilt and identity politics. Metal gear solid delta is the only stealth game I'm looking forward to.
