- Since the beginning of the first Covid lockdown in Europe nearly a year ago, my life has undergone an unprecedented change. From losing all of my income at the start of 2020, I went on to unexpectedly earn six figures, which saved my chateau! Finding myself without work whilst my b&b was closed, I decided to redouble my efforts as a vlogger, and created over a hundred videos on RUclips throughout the year. But this seeming overnight success was 16 years in the making.
This is the rollercoaster story of my life at the Chateau de Lalande...
I'm uploading this story on Valentine's Day, as a thank you to all of our supporters who've shown us such love throughout the last year.

I just wish you titled this “How I saved my chateau” we watch because of you and the dedication you put into editing and creating
But I get it because Stephanie’s calling is clearly about building community. Her dreams don’t come true because of just her, because the dreams inherently center around community. She dreamed of having a chateau where all her friends and family could always come together, I don’t think she ever dreamed of being alone in one, so from the beginning, the vision of Lalande included other people. I think she is a born leader and the type of person who has always brought all types of people together, “the glue”, as they say, but her mind must have been blown when she starting seeing that the community she was building was becoming a global one!

I mean that, and two flats in London worth more than 500K and a family with a 7 room house in London (which is the most common thing in the world). I am happy for her but, she already started with the right cards on her hand. Something not to blame her for, but not to forget.

Dear Stephanie, I am writing to you with a broken heart. My grandson Peter went to heaven yesterday after only having 12 days on earth. I never got to see him in person, his mother and father never got to hold him or even nurse him. The only thing my son was able to do was tell him he was loved and how proud he was of him. I know you went through great grief so I feel I can share this with you. I will send a picture of Peter to you to put in the Chapel.He had such a short life I don’t want him to be forgotten. He was so beautiful I never saw him with his eyes open but I know they would de very kind.

We dont compare and argue well YOUR pain was not as great as someone who lost 6 family members etc etc. Each life is precious no matter the persons age etc We never discount someones pain by saying others have had greater losses so be quiet about yours. Think about it...

...and the Chateau helped so many people during these uncertain times. Stephanie and her cast of friends and family gave so many of us a happy place to escape to. Dear Stephanie, you say we saved you and your dream but you saved so many of us who lived alone during COVID! I am very fortunate with my two loving adult children but I couldn’t see them! So the very least I and so many of your viewers could do was returning the favor by becoming patrons! And of course we want to send gifts to our favorite chatelaine! I was one of the people that the algorithm recommended I watch 'Doing it Ourselves' and through that channel found yours. This was in the beginning of the pandemic, and I went through your previous videos to get more of a sense of what one of these Chateau's cost. I saw the video where you were excited to FINALLY be able to turn a profit in 2020 with your BNB and I felt so bad for you. But now seeing this video, I am so happy at this positive outcome a year later!
I had the exact same experience. I started from watching 1 video to see what it was all about to binge watching all her videos in 1 sitting one particular weekend in 2020 to watching her every time. ❤️❤️

Stephanie is right. Her video output on you tube is a full time job. She makes it look very easy, but as she say, she puts in hours of time to make us feel like a a part of her life. I am glad she has done so well. She deserves it. She is an excellent moderator, story teller and host to her life. There are always people out there to condemn or criticize, and I am glad Stephanie is savvy enough to rise above that and to keep on doing what she does best. She makes her videos interesting and informative. She does put effort into her work and it shows marvelously. Look at the number of people enthralled by her work. Good JOB!
I completely agree with you! On all points. She's doing a fantastic job of addressing some of the criticisms and doing it in such an accountable, transparent, and ELEGANT way. Thank gosh we've got Stephanie around to set such a good example...not just good, a DREAMY example. Imagine if all of us took on a dream project like this, we'd have the whole of the Earth whipped into magical places to change the world into mini loved home spaces everywhere, to take care of everyone and ensure early childhood development in all these rougher places was raised across the board.

It is mind blowing and inspiring that you have been able to pull this off. I am here because I am restoring a 6 bedroom house in New Orleans on a fifth of a acre, which is an utterly huge yard for New Orleans. I have in my mind how it will look when it is done, but man, will there be a lot of work to do. However, your videos make my situation much more manageable.

Sandra Westley I think because she sang professionally, that has given her what we would call the knack of talking to her audience as if they are all present, which a lot of people just haven’t got that confidence, but having said that she is way way above the others, in all she does. I think also her personality is just fun loving and so positive, she is just brilliant, I normally spend the whole time I watch her with a smile on my face, and she leaves you with a lovely warm and positive feeling that it was good to be part of her day.

I cannot even explain how blessed I feel to have found your channel during quarantine, I am an Italian girl living in Scotland and the impossibility of being with my family during those hard times was really hitting hard. But watching you during your daily life in the chateau was filling me with joy, every single video was bringing me to a happy place and during those minutes I completely forgot about the struggles we were going through our first lockdown. My sister (who passed from cancer a little over 4 months ago) and I would sit and watch your vlogs after coming home from chemo. You gave her a lot of comfort and made her happy. Agree! I know some people aren't fans, but it's crazy how people think they know how someone is from a few glimpses on a RUclips video! As a Scandinavian, I think there can also be an issue of cultural differences. Her honest no nonsense attitude can seem rather brusque, but it's not rude to Scandinavians.

I always do too. Stephanie’s face lights up whenever she talks about her father. How I wish he were still alive to share that chateau with his daughter. He painted so much beautiful artwork 🖼 ENOUGH to go around into every room in that castle and remind her of him. Also, all the gifts he bought her to and that she has strategically placed throughout...the beautiful cream bedroom set, the fountain (not up yet), her gorgeous copper bathtub....and so many lovely things. What a special man he was ✨ 🌟 💫
When she talked about the good times they had with the renovations, the type of things not everyone gets excited about, and his belief that it all would get done one day and she would find a way... wow. It definitely reminded me of my own parents, they would be the type to jump right into a family project on this scale if one of us dreamed it up!
I always get emotional too because I lost my own father who was an artisan as well. He died almost 22 years ago so I know for Stephanie that it seems just like yesterday. If you haven't seen it, in one of her recent vlogs she talks very candidly about her eight years of what she now knows was a depression. So uplifting! She always makes you feel like she understands your pain even though she really doesn't know us. That is why I love this community. My daughter brought me to her channel by sending me her Sunday at the Chateau video about Blue and White Spode because I am a collector of Blue Willow. My daughter had been watching her since the beginning of her channel and had been talking about her. All it took was that one vlog, and I was HOOKED! LOL
@@rhondathomas7952 oh that is wonderful. Interesting, I’ve been watching since start of COVID and spent 5 plus hours per day just catching up. My dad too passed a year before hers and I swear I went through 8 years of gloom. I thought I was healing but in fact I can now say it was depression. I get ready-eyed every time she mentions him because I am reminded of my special father. I bought my home 🏡 a year before his death, and whilst it is no chateau, I miss him being around to help me decorate and show him what I’ve done. I’m glad your daughter introduced you to her channel. I must say this show was therapeautic for me in so many ways like “therapy” for the soul. Enjoy and blessings to you and your daughter :)
@@beautymaven3952 I am so sorry for your loss. It is especially hard for Daddy’s girls! For years I would cry a little every day when he Daddy crossed my mind then gradually my thoughts of him would make me smile. I often think when I am with my kids and new granddaughter that Daddy would have just loved this all then I think, “He was a Christian, so I think he is smiling down on us from Heaven!” I like to think so at least. 😊 I have dreams about him sometime and wake up remembering his work worn strong and big hands. So capable of soothing a hurt, chopping down a tree and creating something beautiful out of it. Wood was his medium. Furniture, floors, banisters, inlaid special one of a kind pieces. I have several in my home that I cherish. I hope you have things around you that you cherish of your Dad’s. That helps. Good luck on your projects! I wanted to mention if anyone reads this and cannot be a patron but still wants to help finance the restoration WATCH THE ADS. DON'T HIT THE SKIP BUTTON. It makes a difference in the amount of money a creator receives for the ads. It's a small thing but makes a big difference for ad revenue. Imagine if all 120k people didn't skip ads. VERY GREAT POINT! I do this for content creators I love to watch just so they get the ad revenue, I just speed up the rate to 1.5 times faster replay. Works pretty well.

I would love to know what happened at Lalande up to and including the French Revolution? Were the Marguis’s family imprisoned or worse? Insurrections by the local peasants, perhaps? It would be really interesting and an ideal subject for a Sunday at the Chateau.

There is an older vlog where Stephanie tells us the story of a murder in the area. There was another chateau in the nearby vicinity which is not there anymore. I can only remember snippets of the story. I will have to go find it again and watch myself. I know I was enchanted by how Stephanie told the story.
Might take a good deal of researching, but would be well worth it, and no problem I am sure for the Marvellous Miss Jarvis. An excellent idea for future production.

I watched Escape to the Chateau DIY when it was first shown in the UK so was introduced to Stephanie and Chateau La Lande back then. I recently watched a rerun if that series and was reminded of a young woman who didn't always look so comfortable being filmed and presenting the work being done at the time.
Now, we see a very confident woman who has taken to the whole presenting, filming and editing, and providing content of interest, like s duck to water.
Sadly, too many others have been inspired to copy her success but do not have the charisma, or real interest in their viewers, to pull it off. However, good luck to all.

I had never heard of this edge of the youtube universe -- French Chateaus until, for some reason, Michael's first vlog of Doing it Ourselves was suggested here. I was absolutely floored by the beauty, skill and intimacy of his production -- and it introduced me to this vlog, Chateau Diaries. I came in near the beginning of shutdown and I can't tear myself away. For a long time I satisfied myself that I was helping by watching the advertisements, not skipping them. Finally, I made the plunge and am now a Lady of the chateau -- lowest rank of the aristocracy but it's my pleasure to be here. Thanks Stephanie. Your vlog is a highlight of these isolated days and along the way I've learned so much.

Thanks so much for this summary. Some of the bits of information are new and much appreciated. While I watch mot of the other chateau channels at least occasionally, most of them are not as well-filmed and well-edited as yours (only the Petherick family channels are equal to yours in quality). It is your quality and determined cheerfulness which has caused you to flourish so remarkably. You might add this channel to your list: Not Quite a Chateau. It's a truly derelict relais de poste, similar to Monmagner.
