I was thrilled to hear Victor mention Heinrich Brüssow and give him his flowers because Brüssow was the most talented fetcher of his generation. He was so lethal at the breakdown.
In that period, we were treated to the best two teams in the history of the game of rugby. (First part the Springboks, second part the almighty All Blacks. What a time to have been a [SH] rugby supporter. So much class!)
@@kainoizking 2013 3rd test in SA omg what a glorious game! Even though my Boks lost in the last 5mins it was one of if not the best games I've ever seen!
Awesome one lads, getting Legend Victor in, now i think its time to get the enforcer himself Bakkies Botha in , i can tell you will be in for a treat, please get Bakkies in.
59:39 That was a solid Springbok 15. 🇿🇦 Heyneke Meyer's biggest mistake (besides losing to Japan 😂) was overlooking Heinrich Brüssow, 💪 because he thought he was too small for test match rugby.🏉
Behind the scenes its well known that Brussouw was physically the strongest of them all ,him and his dad were in the housebuilding trade, laying bricks, hauling wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow full of concrete,go check that england or lions game when he just picks the guy up like haybale and throws him to the side
This is probably one of you guy's best interviews, a really great legend of the game in Victor Matfield, he has great insights into the game and is definitely worth listening to
Ryan you have been a great ambassador to Glasgow Warriors and Supporters and Scotland , I had a great time since Firhill to Scotstoun has a former Rugby player and supporter I wish you and your family all the best and what you going to do after Glasgow Warriors 🏴 WE ARE WARRIORS you will always be a Glasgow Warriors and a Weegie WE ARE WARRIORS
Brilliant episode! His team is basically what I'd pick with the same issues at 4 and 12. Brussouw getting his flowers! Amazing! He outplayed McCaw every time they faced eachother. He was something special! Deserved way more caps than he got. Keep the legends coming!
Not heard Victor Matfield being interviewed before and really enjoyed it. His take on Simon Shaw in the Second Lions test was really interesting. Great guest and show 👍
The best lineout poacher the game has seen IMHO, surprised they didn't ask him about that. You never see this type of thing these days, perhaps the game has changed.
Ryan Wilson must come and join the Bulls we already signed englend lock for a short stint at the bulls, come ryan, you will love pretoria, and the bulls culture
If I (Rangers fan) had to walk into a Celtic pub and start a Rammy I would want Bakkies Botha next to me a nasty Mudda fudda who would tackle his granny and leave her wondering WTF and a brilliant Rugby player
Ironically kick and chase rugby is NOT traditional South African rugby. It is in fact traditionally just associated with Bulls/Northern Transvaal rugby. The other teams in South Africa, especially Western Province and Natal, and later the Lions, were more attacking and expansive playing teams (although this changed and waxed and waned as the years went on). But Matfield implying South Africa's traditional approach was the kick and defend type of rugby, is completely wrong. However from his point of view, being an ex Blue Bulls player, it is not difficult to understand why he thinks it is traditional. Coaches like Nick Mallet clearly showed that South Africa could successfully play attacking rugby, even going on to 17 straight test victories. Ironically, his teams were stacked with Western Province and Natal players, at the time. Which were also the more expansive and attacking teams in the country at the time. But this idea of South Africa being a boring kick and chase and defend team, is mostly due to the dominance of the ideology permeated by coaches who bought into the blue bulls model in the country.
I'm a bit disappointed to hear about all of this cheap shot "sorting out" of the hookers and props when they are effectively defenceless in a scrum. Not sure why he is so proud of himself.
Dont worry the hookers got their own back! And knew exactly what was waiting for them on the pitch. Real hard men that go into those scrums so I am sure they wore it as a badge of honour

Brussow was an animal. born to fetch
Was always pissed that he didn't get way more caps...
Changed the 2009 Lions tour. Great player. A fair Bok too amongst the thugs on that tour.
@Nicky Butt hurt
The greatest, no doubt...
Matfield is a legend. Hugely respected over here in NZ. God I miss the old days. 2005-2015 saw some glorious rugby.
In that period, we were treated to the best two teams in the history of the game of rugby.

@@Keizer_Soze 💯💯Those Springbok vs AB battles of ‘09-‘10 were absolutely insane. 2 squads chock full of legendary players.

This is the first time I've seen another person at Matfields' eye level.

Free state???
He signing for ponty isn’t he
Nah not in his fanclub. He joined in the tactics to intentionally injure opposition. Legacy no freakin way.
Why the English whoevers? Your title means people watching rugby will watch it
Eben much better than both

Is RugbyPass owned by a Saffa?
Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha were the most dangerous locks in the game
