WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY MERCURY OUTBOARD!! REPLACING SOLENOID, STARTER, IGNITION, AND BATTERY

- Here's another crazy boat story where something is always breaking down. I thought it was the starter but a repair place got it to jump over so we thought it was good but nope, so I bought a solenoid and put it on but it break on the first try. Order a new solenoid but didn't use it instead I used the old one while putting the new starter on to see if it was really that and bingo it was the starter. I bought the ignition just in case it was that so I kept it for the future of course. Thanks for watching and enjoy.

Thanks for sharing. Perfect vid for what I was looking for. Loved leaving in the stuff that didn’t work. That’s real life. Nice job
Like that little smile to camera....ya looked like the cat that got the cream. Good job mate.
Great video... Thanks! I'm taking in as much info as I can right now. I definitely need a new starter (took it apart and the brushes were BAD)... but I also have some spark issues I'm chasing down. It's been frustrating, but I will know so much more about my motor after fixing it myself.
Man. This is exactly what I needed to see. Thanks for sharing bruh. Just saved me time and money!
Starter turns but won't engage.
and dont forget to check the wires at the starter and the solenoid for voltage drop from the battery cables
Yep, disconnect battery... learning hard way... 😁 good work on the motor. 👍
Nice job! I changed out my mercury starter and solenoid yesterday. It did the trick!
man i know the feeling! i hit a log on rodman and it ended knocking my flywheel out of alignment but i must have rebuild the lower unit 4 times before i check the other end of the motor.... glad you be out in time to get some spawning bass!
ted lincoln's fishing life that place looks awesome but dangerous as well. I had to replace my flywheel and stator and middle section lol. Crazy thing is I’m down again after this weekend trip my motor it started making a weird noise and shaking hope it plugs.
Fernando Fishing Florida old motors! I bought a bigger old 48spl to put on my boat but haven’t started working on it yet.
Motor starts=Happy Man👍👍
It seems to me that mercurys are just finicky especially when they have a little age on em. I've got a mercury 90 and im always working on it. Next time I buy a boat I'm gonna try Yamaha I've heard they're the Toyota pickups of outboards
Great video my friend thanks for the instructions
Working on my first boat. Thanks for the info
Good Job
Bypass the solenoid with a jumper cable. Just bump it and see if she reacts. That will save you the trouble of replacing a good solenoid or guessing. It will spark so make sure you don’t has gas around. I would rather replace just the broken part. I just installed a new solenoid yesterday.
You are right
I have a 40hp mercury 2004. Just got the boat from a relative and the starter bendix wouldn't engage. direct jumped it and it makes a bad worn bearing sound. I bought a new starter (cheap enough) and the bendix still won't engage. I direct jump it to a battery and it will engage fine. So that tells me that the solenoid is probably not right and not providing a full 12 V / amps to the starter. But even direct jumped with the bendix engaged the starter will not turn the fly wheel. It will turn about two teeth and stop. Any ideas. I have pulled the plugs and the engine doesn't seemed seized and will turn with the rope and with the starter.
@@JAW_73 Try a new battery if yours is old and due to be changed.
And replace to solenoid.
@@AK-xu5sj I tried 2 different batteries, a jump starter... Actually just found out it was due to a bad ground. Fixed the ground cable and it turned right over . I'm happy but I have no idea why it would not turn over jumping directly to the battery .
Buy a manual, all test procedures explained, much cheaper that way, glad you got it fixed!!
Time to catch them mondos
Man I hope to god this is what’s wrong with my boat. I’ve been spending money like crazy on this damn thing. New battery, new starter, still no crank, not even turning over, hope to god it’s the solenoid. I just ordered one. 300 dollars down and haven’t even fished out of it yet.
I know that damn feeling....I went through the same thing with my mercury. Finally got it fixed.....it's not perfect yet but it's good enough to take out on the water. Did you ever get it figured out?

Terry Wilson I did man it was the solenoid, got her running and it would still have trouble starting once I turned it off after about a 20 minute boat ride lol. Got stuck in the middle of the lake, small aluminum boat on a very windy day lol. I floated towards a rock wall and was banging up against the rocks. Had to be pulled out. I decided to sell the motor, now I’m saving up for a newer 4 stroke. When I have my heart set on fishing that’s what I’m gonna do damnit lol. Tired of not having a reliable motor. It’s just old.
@@The_Great_White I hate to hear that Its always satisfying to hear guys were able to get their problems fixed but anyway I have an 83 mercury 90 and im constantly having to work on it and it's still not how I want it. I heard mercurys are bad about that as they get older. I don't know what motor you're looking for but I've heard from many people that Yamaha is the most reliable motor on the market but good luck
New subscriber great video thanks
My "starter " problem ended up being a loose battery connection. Enough juice to spin but not engage.
I only came for the thumbnail 🤣
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM I HAVE A NEW SOLENOID /STARTER JUST TICKS I ORDERED ANOTHER SOLINOID ON AMAZON BECAUSE THERE IS NO CURRENT AT THE BOTTOM END ON THE NEW ON I GOT . HOPE THIS WILL FIX MY PROBLEM I AM READY FOR THOSE GA CRAPPIE I BEEN MISSIING AT NIGHT .
Questions do you work on this motors ?
A bad neutral safety switch will cause the same symptoms, it it is a stupid switch inside the control box and if it goes bad you will have no way of being able to start your motor, unless you bypass the switch but then you have to take apart your control box and that's kinda a pain in the ass on the water and if you have the tools right then and thier to do it.
Any idea how to test the switch? I'm dealing with this right now
@@SecularReasons if you shifter/gear box is like the one shown in the video, you will have to open it up and theirs a little black box with I think the wires are yellow and black, but you can by pass it and just connect the wires together splice them or whatever and then try starting your motor with the key, but make sure your in neutral because after you bypass that switch you will be able to start it while in gear, but that's really the only way to test that switch to see if it's bad or not. Also check your kill switch if that goes bad it can also cause the same issues.
@@mattshafer6644 makes sense. Thank you so much!
Thank you God!
I’ve got mixed emotions about this lol, I’m glad you got it to crank over but there’s so many things you could’ve tested with a multimeter and a jumper wire and saved money
I need to know how to put the wires back on the solenoid and the relay for the power trim on a 70 horse outboard motor
Why didn't you just jump across the solenoid with a screwdriver. That way you could have found out if it was bad or not without taking it off.
I did do that ofc and it was bad

acted more like the shift had neutral safety switch out or misalined. Curious if it is still ok or if you have intermittent issue?
It turned out to be a bad solenoid and battery lol. I really think my battery was just bad but I replaced everything anyways bro.
now you get to replace the impeller
Lol, right. At least it's cheap smh.
Hey man where are u from I’m from Gainesville and having this issue right now first boat so I’m still learning DIY
I’m in Tampa, each part is cheap but start with your batteries, then your starter then check the solenoid.
awesome
Neutral safety switch ?
Dont catchum all
