    It's a pleasure to watch you rapidly develop into a very skilled and competent technician. Our field definitely needs an infusion of young people to carry on the proud tradition of tube technology......and I can think of no one better than you to set the standard.

      Not only do we learn about electronics and tube amps from you, we also learn that being nice doesn't require much effort and that pets are very appropriate in amp videos.

    • @zhou_sei
      @zhou_sei 3 года назад +7

      do you think it's still something we can learn from scratch and get into? like, i dabble with guitar pedals, but how much of a leap is it to tube amps, and could i start a career after teaching myself?

    • @rickmartin6817
      @rickmartin6817 3 года назад +12

      We also need more female technicians. I have worked with a few and always wondered why more girls didn't have an interest in electronics. Today, it is difficult to even get boys to take electronics up as a hobby. I hope she inspires more young women to enter the field, whether it's amp repair, radio, or whatever.

    • @rickmartin6817
      @rickmartin6817 3 года назад +7

      @@zhou_sei I'll poke my nose in and answer your question. You can learn a lot on your own, from books, online, videos, etc. Just be aware of one thing as it concerns amp repair. Guitar pedals work with low voltage, but guitar amps work with high voltage. Solid state amps have 120 volts present in the power supply, which is deadly if you touch energized components, and vacuum tube amps have much higher DC voltages that can be stored in capacitors and that can still hurt you even with the amp turned off and unplugged. I hope you pursue your interest, just please be aware that you must learn HOW to safely work on amps before tinkering around in them. I'll be glad to offer you more information if you'd like.

      School was a grey area in my life, I’ve always known my passions in music and nature, all school did was dampen those passions by occupying the majority of my childhood life; sitting in a broken plastic chair, hands rested on a greasy table, light blaring down above me, the cold classroom where some poor teacher is trying to teach me a topic I have no interest in. School in the UK feels like I traded valuable adolescent years of discovering what I love for some general topic knowledge and an unpleasant social experience.

      I took another guitar to the famous Pro shop on the Danforth called attack that the snot was pinching the strings on today. Please fix it. No problem to guitar home waited problem not fixed. Had to go all the way back. what gives. Another thing repair techs don’t tell me how great and wonderful you are anymore than I tell you how great and wonderful I am thank you.

And I like your strategy towards building amps of your own, with one amp to start. I'm in a bit of a similar situation where I've designed an amp that could see light of day in production (series of long stories). And though there will and have been all kinds of logistic headaches, I always feel better when I just sit down, plug a guitar into the thing, and play. The sound of the amp just makes me happy after a while. And it kind of makes it's own peace with me that way. I wish you this same good feeling. And I have little doubt and high hope that you'll be successful.

    Hi - just bumped into your channel and will have to listen later as its "late". One tip I heard about "tone" and replacing vintage power supply electrolytic capacitors. I was told the older capacitors even when new had higher ESR and inductance than modern electrolytics. So in order to emulate the old cap and effects upon "tone", a 100uH inductor with 5-10 ohms DCR would be put in series with each main cap. Single ended circuitry has a lot of interaction with power supply impedance(s)

    Keep up the great work. Best way to learn is to do. That’s how I did it other than an NRI home study course I took in the early 1990’s. That course had no tube technology involved. I’ve been a gigging guitar player for 43 years and always used tube amps. When my go to amp techs started retiring or unfortunately passing away about 20 years ago I started getting my feet wet into doing some of my own work. Guitars I learned how to do most repairs on much earlier because people never seemed to know my feel and touch and never set up my axe the way I liked it so I started doing it myself. For a day job I was a journeyman Tool and Die maker/CNC programmer so I had good skills on building and holding tolerances and at home an avid woodworking guy so the guitar work came pretty easy. The amp stuff I read a lot of books, watched videos later on and just figured it as I went. My math knowledge from my job was a big plus for electronics especially the trig and algebra. Now I have too much test gear lol! Became a scope and meter junkie. DMM’s, old Triplett and Simpson VOM’s, VTVM’s, FETVM’s, tube testers. I love rebuilding old test gear as much as amps too, you should get into that. Great place to learn too. Check out Joe Smith’s channel, Mr. Carlson’s lab and w2aew. Not so much amp guys but electronics chops us mortals dream of. The Radio Shop is great too. I’ve rebuilt about a dozen 60-80 years old radios. Great learning curve in that with doing alignments and such. Looking forward to your next upload. Mike

    An interesting story. Thanks for that. I was expected to keep the band gear going with no training at all, and did it. Taught myself to fix b/w tube tv's in the 70's. Still do some repair work, pc's, whatever. Never had a lesson from anyone. It's in the blood.

    One thing I notice about your videos is that you show a component you are about to install and then cut to the install where the leads are perfectly bent, exactly spaced for the eyelets and the component is perfectly centered between the eyelets. How about sharing your technique for this? I have my own, but am always curious to see how others do theirs. Your repairs & rebuilds take on a very professional look just by this one thing, (plus good soldering technique) which so many others miss. The person who mentored you did a very good job.

    Wow, I didn't know you came from Joliet/Chicago. I've been building and repairing amps as a side job for years in the Chicago area. Vero amps are also awesome, I might even know your dad and uncle. My day job (in Burr Ridge) is not far from Deltronics, and I've sent a lot of digital mixing boards there, much to Mike's dismay, lol. You took classes taught by Ian too at Specimen, wow (?) Awesome shout out to Uncle Doug (love him too), and thanks for the heads up on the podcast. Keep learning and maintaining your excellent humble attitude!

    A Chicago area native - me too. You might remember a line of amps named Fatboy used by such notables as Santana and Beck. The designer and builder of these Fatboy amps was my mentor, colleague and is a good friend. We are both building and repairing amps to this day.
    You have a great story and I wish you continued success.

    I love your channel. If I were going to design an amp. It would be a high gain Marshall master volume type. It would have a handmade bridge rectifier. Two EL34s. Four 12AX7s. No effects loop. No reverb. And no extra channels. Also it would have an easily accessible bias pot and test points. I think a lot of amps today are too complicated. At this point in time I can only change tubes and bias my amps. Maybe someday I'll build one.
