Sometimes I wonder how this band even got off the ground. Like there's only a handful of places to perform metal shows in Hobart, Tasmania. In order to play a show out of town, you basically HAVE to fly into mainland Australia, and speaking from experience, when you start a death metal band, there isn't generally a lot of money to be made to pay for flights, car rentals, etc. Mad respect to these dudes for overcoming their obvious challenges when starting this band. Also the songs rip.
Hell yeah Psycroptic! Huge fan of theirs. I think the combination of awesome, unique talent and a ridiculous level of commitment allowed these guys to somehow break out of Tasmania. They just couldn't be contained. Even all these years later they are a fairly niche band, yet they pull off tours outside of Australia. I got to see them in New Jersey two years ago at a small club, yet they packed the house and got an insane pit going even though it was a Sunday night.
My band opened for them and fallujah a couple years back. Scott introduced me to Joe back stage; I asked Joe how on earth he writes such heavy riffs in just drop D. His response was just “you take your e string and you tune it to D” Gotta love deadpan Australians
Speaking of death metal from remote places, i would love to see you try to learn (or just react in general) some Ulcerate! i feel like they are a band that's really pushing the boundaries of death metal technically and creatively.
Cutting the Throat of God is probably my album of the decade unless something miraculous happens. I end up listening to it front to back a few times a week at least.
Psycroptic has such amazing riffs. Joe Haley just takes us on a journey through the fretboard and we're along for the ride. Also they somehow have so many incredible intros. Cold here in this video, Upon These Stones, The Prophet's Council, and Initiate are all absolute bangers.
Truly one of the sickest riffs I’ve heard in a long time. Some say Opeth, some say lamb of god, some say Gojira, some say Dimebag. I say it’s his own beautiful riff.
Whoa - how did I never notice in the 100x I've spun this record, including live shows lol I think I went from Blackwater Park right to original Chalky-led Psycroptic when I was a kid
Don't know too much about Psycroptic/Joe but his riffs always make me think of a "modern timed" Dimebag. Just so catchy and groovy. One riff that always gets me is the one that starts about 30 seconds into the song Exitus. Such a sick riff.
Heck the frig yeah!! I had the privilege to play before Psycroptic at Blacken the Globe festival in Alice Springs. Now that is even more remote! Great band and great blokes.
What an absolutely killer riff. I gotta do my due diligence and check out more Psycroptic. Would love to see some Vildhjarta on the wheel too, especially since they’ve got official tabs out there now
One of my favourite bands. I saw Psycroptic recently in Launceston. Third time seeing them live and they never dissapoint the home crowd. Got me into death metal also. Rep you local scene and you might see some bands take off!
Yeaaah! This is so cool to see! I always wanted you to do a 4 levels of Psycroptic, Joe is a monster player but he's right in your wheelhouse with all that hybrid picking he uses. Saw you both at the Dome in London UK a while back and THAT was a killer night. Great job dude!
Been looking forward to the wheel landing on this band. Totally sick musicians and pretty okay blokes too. 😆👍 Where's Dave's Archspire audition video? Ha ha ha. Look forward to seeing you down here with them again when you're back on the road. Good job learning the riff too 🤟
"This is like, the riff...." That riff is definitely the riff, indeed... It was an immediate "must learn" riff when I heard this when this album came out and I first heard it. Psycroptic is just too sick
I photographed you guys in Adelaide, and recently did Psycroptic too! absolute legends. Dave, the drummer - is an absolute machine. He's in every big DM band in Australia this point. Audition that fool!
Something to be said about bands with siblings on guitar and drums. Love psycroptic. More people need to know about this band! Thanks Dean. Great episode as always
you should check Ulcerate from New Zealand some time. I think you should like and be interested in checking their unique kind of tech-atmospheric death metal
Bro, we just vended at Froth and Fury Fest in little ol' South Australia, and managed to get away from our stall just in time to catch Psycroptic's entire set. It slapped so hard. They still got it fo sho!
This is awesome! Gwan Dean ❤ Psycroptic are one of my fave bands of all time, I freakin love both Haley brothers' playing, super inspiring. For anyone who hasnt heard Psycroptic my fave albums are the self titled and Divine Council and my fave guitar part is the super legatto part to A Calculated Effort
I fucking LOVE Psycroptic. I discovered them back in the day on the same day I discovered Meshuggah, I bought a Metal for the Masses CD in Hot Topic and it had Immortal Army of One and Bleed on it. 🤘💪
That riff was indeed very sick. Seems like it would be boring watching a guy fumble through learning somebody else’s music. But it’s not. Fun stuff. And definitely downplays how good Dean actually is at playing.
I found this and on some random wordpress metal blog in like 2008-2010 somewhere, they're pretty cool I had no idea about where they were from etc since I never extensively looked into them but they have some good material
‘Cold’ would have to be one of their best openers .. i’ve been seeing these lads live since 2000 (50 + Shows and counting) 🤘🤘the Haley Brothers are insane .. Chalky mate please do a sneaky reunion for ‘Scepter and ‘Disenchantment
Great vid great bald great band. Aussie metal owes a lot to Psycroptic, the Haley brothers are Tasmania's best and only non-fruit related export. Growing up I learned "Battling the Misery of Organon" on guitar from their second album and it makes me feel powerful thinking about it. 5 stars.
I found out about this riff from Psycroptic from a very random video testing a guitar and I think it has changed me. I still randomly think about it randomly at times.
By the way these guys have printed official Tab Books on Lulu. But be warned...it's tough to learn that stuff...Joe's style is very unique. But that's what them makes so interesting to listen to
Learned about them like 10 months ago, Divine Council is my weekly listen since day one. Rend Asunder has one of the best chorus riffs I've heard in years.

Can get ferry over to Melbourne which is arguably the best place for metal shows in Australia
My band opened for them and fallujah a couple years back. Scott introduced me to Joe back stage; I asked Joe how on earth he writes such heavy riffs in just drop D. His response was just “you take your e string and you tune it to D”
Gotta love deadpan Australians
Sylosis is heavy as hell in E standard. Tuning lower doesn't necessarily make riffs heavier.
@ I’m well aware. It was a conversation starter
Amazing 😂
@@KalosPVP Sylosis quit playing in E. They're in C# standard these days.
@@KalosPVP Vektor play(ed) in F and it sounded SICK
Aussie here, I love Psycroptic and they are criminally under-rated it's unreal.
FINALLY PSYCROPTIC! LETS GOOOOOOOOOO!!!
You know i would kill for a levels of death metal with Joe Haley
Fuck yeah! I've been saying this for years haha legend 🙌
Definitely, how gooood would that beeee
They are local heroes here! I'm so stoked to see them getting some love on this channel. Kick-ass riffs galore.
I knew based on the title it was Psycroptic. Joe Haley is an absolute riff monster, and highly underrated.
Speaking of death metal from remote places, i would love to see you try to learn (or just react in general) some Ulcerate! i feel like they are a band that's really pushing the boundaries of death metal technically and creatively.
Literally THIS 💯
although finding tabs might be kinda difficult
Cutting the Throat of God is probably my album of the decade unless something miraculous happens. I end up listening to it front to back a few times a week at least.
Hellyee
I wish Ulcerate would come to Hobart, a show with them and Psycroptic would be sick. They stick to the bigger cities when they visit Aus though.
These guys have been one of my favorites for like 14 years. Observant is such a perfect album.
Scepter of the ancients is a must listen.
holy shit im so glad you did this song and i got to watch it. I'm from Australia and this makes me proud af
PSYCROPTICCC. God Tier band, love them dudes
I’m born and bred in Tassie and have seen Psycroptic a handful of times. Truely nuts
YESSS these guys were my first tech death band band and they're the reason i found Archspire!
Psycroptic has such amazing riffs. Joe Haley just takes us on a journey through the fretboard and we're along for the ride. Also they somehow have so many incredible intros. Cold here in this video, Upon These Stones, The Prophet's Council, and Initiate are all absolute bangers.
Knew that riff in a second. Psycroptic rules and "Scepter of the Ancients" is in my top-10 death metal of all time.
Damn, what an album hey. Sooo gooodd.
Cruelty incarnate was a fucking jam
Truly one of the sickest riffs I’ve heard in a long time. Some say Opeth, some say lamb of god, some say Gojira, some say Dimebag. I say it’s his own beautiful riff.
That riff sounds like Opeth as fuck.
Whoa - how did I never notice in the 100x I've spun this record, including live shows lol I think I went from Blackwater Park right to original Chalky-led Psycroptic when I was a kid
Yeah, I hear that too...it's just beefed up 💪🏾💪
Sounds like if Opeth and Lamb of God had a baby
No… no it doesn’t
Literally had Ghost of Perdition pop in my head when I heard this.

What an absolutely killer riff. I gotta do my due diligence and check out more Psycroptic. Would love to see some Vildhjarta on the wheel too, especially since they’ve got official tabs out there now
Man those vildhjarta songs are so hard. The style of playing is so weird but that’s what makes it good
@@Goose21 And that's why I wanna see Dean try to play them 😂
Would be really fun to see the speed riff man trying to learn some bendy odd time waddles
One of my favourite bands. I saw Psycroptic recently in Launceston. Third time seeing them live and they never dissapoint the home crowd. Got me into death metal also. Rep you local scene and you might see some bands take off!
He has such an unique sound and playing too, great band! That whole album is awesome riffs back to back.
Yeaaah! This is so cool to see! I always wanted you to do a 4 levels of Psycroptic, Joe is a monster player but he's right in your wheelhouse with all that hybrid picking he uses. Saw you both at the Dome in London UK a while back and THAT was a killer night. Great job dude!
These dudes are what pushed me into the extreme stuff, and it started with this song. All time favorite.
Been looking forward to the wheel landing on this band. Totally sick musicians and pretty okay blokes too. 😆👍 Where's Dave's Archspire audition video? Ha ha ha. Look forward to seeing you down here with them again when you're back on the road.
Good job learning the riff too 🤟
Hell yeah this made my week. First psycroptic song i ever heard and still one of my favourites
FINALLY SOMEONE BROUGHT PSYCROPTIC !!! Love you Dean Greetings from Türkiye
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. Nice work

Hell yeah from Tassie! Grew up going to Psycro shows. Tassie have heaps of amazing bands
Pretty sure I heard about them during the pandemic watching your videos and now I've been a fan.
The part right after that one feels soooo good to play too!
Love this! The riff at the end of The Shifting Equilibrium, is just SO tasty!
What a riff!!!
Psycroptic rules! Joe is the reason i play Ormsby. Killer riffs and killer guitars! Thanks Dean
The watcher of all by them is phenomenal! Easily one of the catchiest most creative riffs to come out of modern metal.
you should check Ulcerate from New Zealand some time. I think you should like and be interested in checking their unique kind of tech-atmospheric death metal
i played with them a couple of weeks ago in frankston victoria with trepacide, amazing people and really cool music
Bro, we just vended at Froth and Fury Fest in little ol' South Australia, and managed to get away from our stall just in time to catch Psycroptic's entire set. It slapped so hard. They still got it fo sho!
i was there for fear factory. taim sounds good with the new vocalist
@tfwnoyandere my fav. set was Pizza Death :)
I haven't even watched yet and I know in for a treat. I've been dying to see how this riff is played
Seen them live a few times in Brooklyn. Good stuff!
I mean whatever the band, we gotta admit Dean's fast and complicated playing got him warmed up for fucking any band out there.
This is awesome! Gwan Dean ❤ Psycroptic are one of my fave bands of all time, I freakin love both Haley brothers' playing, super inspiring. Hellyeah, ObServant is still my favorite album of theirs after all these years, goes so hard, Cold is definitely a sick song, crushing riffs.

YES! YES! YES!
Psycroptic are awesome
Thank you for introducing me to this , wow!🎉
Ive been dying for you to cover some psycroptic! Joe Haley is the riff God
Psycroptic is probably one of the best bands ever been listening to them from the beginning
Add Obscura or Spawn of Possession to the wheel, both crazy tech bands.
cool

Hey Dean..could you try to play Wintersun tracks? 🙏
Fuck yeah, my favourite Psycroptic riff. Also sounds sick on acoustic.

I had no idea about where they were from etc since I never extensively looked into them but they have some good material
Joe Haley is one of my favorite guitarists! Hope Revocation comes up on the wheel soon!
Yes! Finally Psycroptic haha. Top
Tier band to this day even 20 years after I first saw them.
Sexy riff! Would love to see Gorod on the next wheel, it MUST happen. They are a riff madhouse clinic.
I love this series :)
Psycroptic's sceptre of the ancients album is so damn good.
Swe them twice and the second time it was woth archspire. Was a great fricking show
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH Psycroptic has like an absurd amount of good riffs
that guitar tone is butter in my bread
Wow, that ending too!
psycroptic is the shit and I love anyone enjoying it.
Great vid great bald great band. Aussie metal owes a lot to Psycroptic, the Haley brothers are Tasmania's best and only non-fruit related export. Growing up I learned "Battling the Misery of Organon" on guitar from their second album and it makes me feel powerful thinking about it. 5 stars.
One of the best riffs ever
This band makes me feel the felt listening to metallica at the begining of my metal journey
Dean lamb has no fear 🤘
I found out about this riff from Psycroptic from a very random video testing a guitar and I think it has changed me.
I still randomly think about it randomly at times.
I’m seeing Psycroptic this January along with Embryonic Autopsy, Nile, and Six Feet Under.
By the way these guys have printed official Tab Books on Lulu. But be warned...it's tough to learn that stuff...Joe's style is very unique. But that's what them makes so interesting to listen to
i want to hear Revocation and Skeletal Remains soon!
Cruelty Incarnate has an insanely sick, weird opening riff. Killer band.
Thanks for showing me cool band
OMG, intro acoustic riff is so awesome
this riff is insane
Holy smokes that riff and those chugs
Dali thundering concept on the wheel would be awesome!
Just saw them live!

Rend Asunder has one of the best chorus riffs I've heard in years.
i love this series
Let's get some Gorod on that wheel?
Dude! Psycroptic and gorod are probably my 2 favourite bands.
I have a playlist of just Gorod, Psycroptic, and Revocation. Just for the riffs
Hell yeah! Cold is so fucking good
What a killer riff.
Waiting for that Protest the Hero lol But this riff fucks
Protest, BTBAM, and Human Abstract are the bands I'd love to see. So many sick riffs on HA's Nocturne
