You know a song is good when it makes you feel nostalgia for a generation you never lived in
I tell all the kids you should'a been there
I was trying to explain this to someone the other day on here. I couldn’t think of how the fuck to explain it to some keyboard warrior. This does it cheers! Thanks
Right on

or did you?
One of the greatest country songs ever written
You know that's true because the greatest country songwriter ever... also covered this song. Townes Van Zandt
@@chriskucholtz6967 Haha, Have to agree with chris
This isn't country at all but it is a phenomenal song
@@zacharyhinson689 I think it's the Stones making fun of country music. Just listen to how Mick sings the verses. All, "shucks ma'am"
Of course it's country.
An entire genre of music will be lost when Mick or Keith passes. These people were Gods gift to our generation. Saw them 7 times, starting in 71. They defined my life with their music. Took me through a lot of hard times and confusion. Thanks God.
I feel ya!!!
Ma da danced like Mick Jagger and played the drums like Ringo Starr god bless old pistol Pete we forgive you pistol

a country song about shooting up. prob the first of it's kind. The best rock n roll band of all time has one of the greatest country songs ever. brilliant
Its just about pain and self loathing
@@jonbaszkiewicz It is about a needle and spoon too, though
It was written by Townes vanzandt and yes those are heroin references.
Townes 😮
never really got why my dad liked these songs..until he passed away now I feel this song very deeply
You know I stumbled on to this track cause I was thinking about my older brother who was a big stones fan, he took me to a concert in 89'. My brother passed 12 years ago when I hear these songs I think of him.
@@Kegga_6 my brother passed away in 2008 suddenly and he introduced me to all of the music I know and love , sorry for your loss x

It'll be alright
Rest in the Stillness and know he is with you
Hmmm.... its like it was yesterday when i bought this 8 track. I didn't know what it all meant. I understand now. I bought it in 1971 before i went to Vietnam. Now im an old man. That was 49 years ago....🥀
Glad you made it back brother. 🇺🇸
Thanks for your service brother!
Glad you made it back...thank you for your service. Y'all didn't get the appreciation you deserved when you got home but we can thank you now.
Respect from the UK soldier. Stand easy your tour is over
I read your comment and burst into tears. Dunno why. I'm an old man too.
I'll never forget one day when I asked my dad what his favorite Rolling Stones song was, and he said Dead Flowers. I'd never heard it so he sung a few bars from the chorus and let out a small sob when he sang "and I won't forget to leave roses on your grave". I miss him every day.
Love this version but Townes was one of the greatest singer/songwriters of his generation.
@poops - 100%. Add John Prine and I'm in lyrical heaven.
I think every boomer feels a stab in the heart when Mick sings that lyric about roses on your grave that last time .. because all our mothers are gone now. And every Christmas, I never forget to put new roses (actually pointsettas) on her grave
Then I take a pic of it and text it to my seven brothers and sisters. And it was this song that moved me to do it
@@poops_talk_to_me7941townes covered this not the the other way around...this is a Stones song

Joe Darcy I agree.
Joe Darcy It may not be the best Stones song, but it is one I enjoy the most!
Joe Darcy one of my favorites by them.

42 now! Congrats man.
Congratulations mate
Charlie’s double ding on his ride bell to cue the end of the song is a lesson in and of itself on how to be the drummer in a band. Nuff said…thanks, Charlie
Much respect for Charlie.
charlie was a very inventive drummer on every track his own style was pure original,,,,, god bless charlie you are missed
For sure. Charlie was a pro and he was always on top of it.
Just impeccable
They were closing the bar....thats all it was!!
Few songs bring greater peace and joy. We got high together almost fifty years. And almost everytime between freezing dippers and busting rails. Between the expensive wine and the cheap beer. While making those 5 A.M. Bloody Mary's and cleaning out the tooters, and smoking that last Dip before work. This would be playing through our conversation in the background. You know who you are. Yesterday I was planting petunias on My Miss Miss grave, the love of my life my Beautiful wife MP. This song just popped into my brain. She passed away last year nothing to do with drugs.. I am so lucky to have had her for 29 years. The best years of my life, Oh I miss her so. So now I am sitting on my back porch play this song having a coup of coffee while looking at My Miss Miss grave as her grave is in our back yard. Next to the place we got married.. What a song to plant flowers on her grave thank's for this song you Guys. Update 10/29/2020: Saturday Night the last day of October will now be One year for me that M. died it is songs like this that got me through this. And yes I have Roses for her Grave. This song reminds me of my uncle Steve who passed away around 7 years ago from MND. In the 80s when id be at his house, or at his American car yard in London, he would always be listening to the Stones. He always loved this song. He was one of the type of guys that could leave the house with nothing and get home with a hand full of cash. He always saw opportunity, never complained about how life or anyone did him wrong. The man has a smile and laugh that would make everyone else in the room be happy. Always fixing something something or doing something. Miss that man!
hello to everybody who likes this song..
Greetings
Hi. This is my all time favorite beer drinking song.
I went from liken Partridge Family songs to RocknRoll music, Those concerts in 70s were crazy with hardly any security. I got lucky Allman Brothers played at a local bar. Friend gave Mick a nickname ( rooster on acid) cause of his energy on stage
Howdy.
I love this and I won’t forget to put dead roses on your grave!! I love it
Say whatever you want about the Stones...ain't another rock band ever that could switch musical genres and make you feel like they were the mississippi bluesmen, country honkin' , Motown-loving and Chuck Berry-swangin Kings of the World.
Great post
Hell yea. Blues, country, R&R, gospel, and even disco. They were so sick. Keith the godfather of cool.

YOOOO I JUST WATCHED THE MOVIE AND THATS HOW I FOUND THIS SONG
LMAO
Donny your out of your element.
One of my favorite Stones songs and albums. Early 70s oh yeah. Exile, beggars banquet, sticky fingers, let it bleed. Just incredible
The greatest rock n roll moment of my life, was when my Dad, Manager of RFK STADIUM in DC in '72, hired me, 20 years old, to pick the STONES up at National Airport in my huge Pontiac Bonneville station wagon. I had THE STONES in my car, to drive to the Sheraton Carlton hotel on 16th st in DC. The next plane had the groupies, equipment, etc. I was fairly stoned, by then, and had trouble backing up the equipment truck onto the runway....almost too out a propeller! Whew!
The funny thing is this: The '72 Tour was billed as The Stones Fairwell Tour!!!
Uhh...I dont think so:-). What a memory....thx DAD!
rick neumann this is awesome man! Great story
Fuk yeah mang
Kool Dad indeed
I saw the 72 tour in Anahiem, Ca
Sounds like you had a time. Awesome story, man
what was it like driving them?? you can't tell us that story with giving us the details man!
I was pretty stoned when driving them. traffic in downtown dc was awful, and I was nervous. They largely ignored me except for Charlie Watts. I told him I was a drummer too, with Ricky and The Reefers. He loved the name! I also got seduced by the wife of a roadie manager.
how do a buncha boys from england turn out such beautiful country western blues? jesus, they're touched.
+Stephen Velez Hanging with Gram Parsons didn't hurt.
+Stephen Velez Real talent knows no limits and no frontiers.

Sitting in a bar last winter, this song comes on, and I'm like -- (1) "why are they playing C&W in a Massachusetts bar? and (2) damn, that's good. Then we hit the chorus and I realize it's something I first heard in JHS. They the Stones can master different genres!
They're bad ass and showed how music is supposed to be played
I love Sticky Fingers, every tune!!

Fucking classic!
I am listening to this song on May 7th 2022 Kentucky Deby Day.
GREAT Pics of McLips! Worlds Greatest R&R band/ Bar NONE. Semper Fi.

Mick Taylor was a gift for the Rolling Stones as he gave the real colour of the blues to their musical touch.
+Saptono Istiawan No, they knew the blues. He just played a thousand extra notes.
***** Not really. Two albums of their golden period from '68-'72 were done without him (Beggars Banquet and 99% of Let It Bleed), while he doesn't really stand out on Exile On Main Street. You can really only say he contributed to the power of Sticky Fingers. Mick and Keith's amazing songs of the time were really about the peak of their writing and riff skills, not Taylor's soloing.
+steve conn They came back with "Exile" after I thought the well ran dry. " Sweet Virginia" has the same sound as this. I literally wore out the vinyl on " Exile on Main Street". I still have the replacement, which I consider a treasure.
+James Bond do yourself a favor and check out the rockers on some girls
+James Bond Exile was one of their four best, along with Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers. But Some Girls and Tattoo You are top grade Stones as well, and Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon are absolutely worthwhile as well. So no, the well didn't dry up permanently, just for a few albums.
This band worked their asses off confronting the cool pop culture of their time. They brought home the raw blues that gave birth to our rock and roll. I still appreciate this band!
Hell yeah man. Glad to hear say something about their blues influences. Very important piece of their work. Beggar's Banquet is definitely where they displayed it. Thats my favorite album. i know this ain't off it
:"Our" Rock n Roll eh? No body owns it, especially the Stones. They just ripped off people like the British always do.
They were the cool popular culture of their time. What rock n roll? It's no longer a cultural influence. No body owns rock n roll. They were just in it for the money like everybody else and they turned rock n roll into a corporate institution! Times have changed. The Rolling Stones are the Rock n Roll Pioneers for Big Business which is demented and sad thing.
Shut the fuck up Paul
@@paulsavage5057 from 1962 to the present they were faithful to the roots of the blues

Bleed. Exile and Sticky... the holy trinity of classic Stones Albums.
Mick Taylor Stones all day. Goats Head Soup has some bangers as well

Bought my wife some Roses for Valentines day. Left them in car for a couple hours in 10 degree weather. they got frozen. I thawed them and gave them to her. Nice. They all died overnight. So I came to this song which I love and played it for her. All is good.

Best Rock and Roll band ever!!!
next to Led zeppelin ..agreed
Zeppelin just loud empty blues-rapists; Stones have soul and class.
+Ana Led Zeppelin was extremely overrated with a singer who ripped off Janis Joplin, lyrics that were downright embarrassing, Jimmy Page's inability to move his fingers fast enough to play the notes that he wanted to cram in to the songs, etc. etc. I worshipped The Who & Led Zeppelin in high school until I realized that neither band was all that close to being one of the top ten or so musical acts ever.
cgarnet01 The Who at least wrote heartfelt songs about society and social alienation; Zep just a band of dick-swinging blues rapists.
cgarnet01 You're allowed to have your opinion, but come on now are you serious? Led Zeppelin is without a doubt one of the most overall talented bands of all time. John Paul Jones was a musical genius, John Bonham played the drums like no one else had ever done before, Robert Plant was lyrically gifted and sang with more heart and emotion than few before. Jimmy Page....Jimmy fucking Page....Jimmy Page has written more timeless, beautiful songs than almost anyone else and is without doubt one of the most skilled guitarists of all time. Led Zeppelin was the perfect combination of raw talent and musical training that created a musical revolution paving the way for countless bands following them.
Classic Stones 🇬🇧
This is an EXCELLENT and very underrated RS song.
Man, I love those vocal harmonies that are a little rough around the edges. So much attitude. The Stones (and The Band) really elevated those into an art form.
when you see video of this song ....you can see & feel the chemistry between mick & Keith & mick Taylor from those exile on main St & sticky fingers days of the early 70's....the best stones line up....hands down!
That rough edge makes it so good though,
One of the best songs by the Stones that I listened to while serving our country in 1971 until 1975. You could always tell the beer drinker and the pot smokers apart. One side of the road had country music and the other one had rock for the tokers
Thank you for your service.

Greatest rock/country song ever
Rolling Stones just keep rockin, grew up in this era and lived through it, am now 72 and don't regret a moment, now just chillin
Hey, John Lewis, I'm 59 yrs old and I remember in 1965/6 one of my sisters friends asking me if I were a Beatles or Stones fan. Hell, I was only 4/5 yrs old but I'd seen both on TV and just from the impression made on my barely formed brain, I said, "Stones." and have never regretted it. God Bless and take care. what a great thing to say. People like you will help rock n roll stay alive!
As for Vienam ~ Sadly, I came home to a country that was unable to understand the difference between disliking a war and disliking those who served.
This is such an awesome country song that I thought The Stones were covering a classic American tune. My respect for these guys grows as the years fly by. Got to see them in May '24 in Foxboro, Massachusetts and in Boston at Fenway in '05. Here's hoping I get to see them again...who knows?❤

I seen Mick sing this in the Old Milwaukee Country Stadium In 75/76 in green tights with The Eagles opening for them.
Their best effort. Muscle shoals. Outstanding..
Dan Rode not recorded at Muscle Shoals. Only cut three tracks there. Brown Sugar, You Gotta Move, and Wild Horses
My wife left me This was the last song I remember her singing along to ..after things unfolded it made a lot of since. I still miss her today,, I hope she finds happiness
stones..my favorite country band of all time
what are you an idiot....yes the Stones are a rock n roll band with blues influences...duh....but they also did many great country songs in which this is one of many making them my favorite country group of all time....cuz I pretty much hate country bands except the Stones
'I'll be in my basement room, with a needle and a spoon....' I remember when this came out ( I was about 12 years old) poking pins into my arm to try and fool people that I might be a junkie. Innocent days, really. But at that time in rural England, it was impossible for a 12 year old to get anything stronger than beer or cigarettes - which looking back was probably a very good thing, otherwise I would almost certainly be dead by this time. As it is, at at 64 I can plug in my bass and play along with Bill to one of the Stones great tunes. The whole album is still a thing of wonder really...
When you live in Louisville ,and they play this at Churchill Downs live .Kinda makes your hair stand up.Down the stretch they come !!!!!!Thank you fellas...
I wish I was born in the 70s. So I can see all my favourite bands ( hard rock, glam, heavy metal)
WTF? 1,000 people must be "Backside Boys" Johnson smokers.
This may STILL be one of the best Stones songs of all time.
The best R&R band of all time, that's for damn sure.
