- In the High Cost of Homelessness, the Supreme Court is backing a Tennessee law banning camping on public property.
While some feel this criminalizes homelessness and could make the issues even worse, others feel this Supreme Court's decision could act as a deterrent for those living on the streets.

I agree. Penal colonies and mental institutions would be so much less expensive. These people need someplace to go instead of being perpetually under foot. Productive people need to rise up.

This is great shame against the Most High. Where are people suppose to go?
Yea and you know what theyre coming for next....cars and RVs. Its allready illegal in some states
Unbelievable. They can do this but most people on the streets are in need of mental care and no one is helping the mental health crisis. HOW IS THIS A FREE COUNTRY, SO YOU CANT EXIST IF YOUR NOT WORKING AND PAYING TAXES TO THE GOVERNMENT? Your gonna tell me if someone does not have a home - they can’t put up shelter over their head? Their suppose to not sleep? Your denying people basic human rights at this point? HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MINDS?
Sorry. No one has a "right" to set up housekeeping on public or private property without permission. Setting up a homeless tent invariably ends up with a health hazard because there is no way to deal with the sewage. If you want to press your elected officials to provide some place for the homeless to live, feel free to do so. But this living on the street simply has to stop. It is damaging the quality of life for everyone.

-Open rehab centers for drug addicts who often end up on the streets of America ❌
-Secure the border to fix the migrant crisis that adds to the homelessness problem in America ❌

I absolutely believe that the government can help fix this problem. In Nashville they have I don’t know how many I think it was in the hundreds of tiny houses that we got during the pandemic they were just sitting there. They have never been used. However, a huge percentage of the homeless are drug addicts that do not want to stop using drugs and there’s another percentage of mentally ill people that should be taken care of.
But you can’t just say it’s OK to be a drug addict and live on the streets
Just a way to get people off the street and into camps
If someone is homeless how many options do the legal types think they have?
Nashville government closed a homeless camp in a park in the Nashville suburbs, about a year ago. The camp had been there for over a decade, and the parks department had put up a notice that the park was not safe to enter, a year or two before the camp was closed. The metro council imposed a requirement that the homeless living in that park could not be removed until each and every one of them had either been moved into public housing or turned down TWO offers of public housing. A security fence with a locked gate was put around the park when the camp was closed, and within a few months, there were reports of former residents of the camp trying to dig under the fence to get back into the park. They were offered at least two options, but they preferred living in their camp.
The estimate is that it will take over two years and over a million dollars to clean up the park (a charity group had been handing out free needles on a regular basis for quite some time, and the park was littered with used needles) and repair the damage, before the park can be reopened. So far, the only answer I have seen to the question of how the city government will prevent the homeless from setting up a new camp after the park reopens, is that the city is expecting nearby residents to report any tents being set up.
@paulstevens7528 Obviously, there are no easy answers. I've observed that homeless people can be roughly divided into three groups. 1) Those who became homeless through no intentional act or fault of their own. These are the easiest to help because they want out. 2) Those that like the lifestyle. No responsibility, free food at shelters, free medical at the county hospital etc. Panhandle or whatever to get money for booze and drugs. These are nearly impossible to change. and 3) Those that should be getting help, but aren't because of legal restrictions and/or lack of facilities to provide that help.

The problem with what you're talking about is the greatest majority of these people have been homeless for 5 10 15 years and are on drugs or alcohol The reason they're on the street generally is because they can't be in the shelter because they don't want to follow the rules
That's not really a solution, because free anything will create a limitless demand. You can just leave your place, say you're homeless and voila, no more rent. "Free" only exacerbates any problem.
to the people upset, the city funds a ton of homeless shelters and housing programs. The reason the homeless never take them is because they have to enroll in a rehab program and go clean. Many will choose to live in tents rather than go clean. Seattle has a ridiculous amount of shelters and they basically go unused because of the drug requirement.
If people lived in rented homes or apartments, wouldn’t the same rules apply with drugs?

There didn't seem to be any complaints during the many years that the Tennessee law only applied to state property. It was when the state law was amended to also apply to city and county public property that people started complaining about it.
The Tennessee law does not make it a felony to sleep on the street. It allows an individual to be arrested and charged, IF a police officer tells them they are illegally camping AND they are still camping there when the officer comes back in 24 hours. From what I have read about the Supreme Court case, the lawsuit was over a city imposing a law that people could not camp in the same spot for four days - there was even a volunteer group that was helping the homeless move their camp on a regular basis, so that they would not be fined or arrested. Their complaint was that they should be allowed to stay in one spot, instead of having to move after a certain amount of time. The federal government imposes a limit of two weeks for camping in one spot on certain types of federal land, so it's not quite a localized concept.
During the search for Riley Strain in Nashville, there were a lot of people watching news reports and asking why the riverbank in downtown Nashville was so trashy and why nobody cleaned up the trash. The riverbank in that area is covered in trash, because there are homeless camps along the riverbank. When trashcans and dumpsters have been provided, they continued to toss their trash on the ground around their camp or toss it down the riverbank, with some of it ending up in the river. A few days before Riley Strain was reported missing, there was a news report on how tourists had started complaining about the trash along the riverbank in downtown Nashville. The longer they camp in one spot, the more trash they pile up around their camp.
It's about time.👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

@@henryperez606 Nashville did not have a plan to deal with homeless camps, until after the last mayor learned that there were federal grants available to study the homelessness problem. The mayor made it very clear that he wanted that grant money, so the city government created a commission to study the problem and make recommendations on how to address it. The eventual solution from the city was a rule that homeless camps could not be removed from city parks until after the residents of the camp had turned down TWO offers for public housing. Nashville still has a problem with homeless camps in city parks.

The law in question only applies to public property. If you want to allow people to camp in your yard, that decision is between you and your local building codes office.

While the homeless certainly need to be helped as much as possible, there need to be laws in place to discourage it. The community needs to have the legal right to not have homeless encampments pop up in the middle of residential & school areas.
It's not about "solving" homelessness. That's not the public's job. If individuals want to involve themselves in solving the problem, fine but no one us required to and no one should be required to have their own lives negatively affected by homeless persons. I seldom hear of or see any of those who bemoan decisions like this opening their homes to homeless people or inviting them to camp in their yards. I'm a disabled vet and I was homeless for extended periods, nevertheless that was no one else's problem. I did what I had to in order to solve my own problems. Yes, there were resources available to me but I didn't camp out on public property OR private without obtaining permission.
What happens to all those protesters at campuses? Do they go to jail?
That's sort of why the Tennessee law was originally passed. A protest group set up a mock homeless camp on the Tennessee legislative plaza, then filed a lawsuit when state police removed their camp. One of their main arguments was that there was no law against them setting up a camp on public property. They should not have been surprised when the state responded by passing a law against camping on public property that is not designated for camping use.
So it's against the law to be homeless
Yes Michael
Surely they'll provide housing?
You could gives these people a job and a house tomorrow and 99% would rather have the drugs. The public shouldn’t have to deal with poor personal choices

The homeless situation has gotten totally out of control I don't know around this area but in California and a lot of places these people should not be right on the sidewalk where people are trying to go into businesses or in shops people get discouraged to go in a business or shop around these homeless tents because they don't know what kind of people are there they could get robbed or anything else
