The element he added to contrmporary music was his own warm humanity. God bless!

That's Abe Most, longtime stalwart clarinet star of the Les Brown Band of the 1940s taking solo honors on Herman's Blue Flame, Goodman's Let's Dance, Miller's Moonlight Serenade, and Shaw's Nightmare.
Most was also heavily featured on the series of Big Band music recreations conducted by Billy May for Time-Life Records in the early 1970's, on which he played a leading role as soloist for a considerable amount of the most famous repertoire that originated with the bands of Goodman, Shaw, Herman, Tommy Dorsey and others.
This entire orchestra is full of many of the leading "wrecking crew" free-lance studio session-musicians that took part on hundreds if not thousands of recording sessions for motion pictures, television and backing up dozens of solo artists that recorded albums in Hollywood from the end of the Swing Era in 1946 to well into the 1970s if not 1980's, (I.E. Nat Cole, Sinatra, Dean Martin, and all the others). It's too bad there's no record of the entire personnel in this. At the end of the day it was a very closed circle of musicians who did an overwhelming majority of all of the work that was to be had in LA for over 40 years.

I have many Mancini albums and love to notice the names of the greatest musicians that play with him. John (Curly) Williams played jazz piano with Mancini starting with the Peter Gun soundtrack. Thanks for your input. Greatly appreciated.

Mancini eclipsed them all with his innovative big band arrangements! Think he played about ten instruments himself! Greatest musical genius of all time! I ca n see the Pink Panther prowling right now! And Peter Sellers, brilliant as LInspector Clousseau!

You could always count on Henry Mancini to do a wonderful arrangement and have world-class musicians play it: Bill Watrous, Pete Candoli. Ronnie Lang, Don Menza ........ Wow!!!

Over four decades ago, I acquired the RCA LP Mancini Concert on which this montage was first recorded, and this became a seminal opus in my deep appreciation for the big band idiom, which persists to this day. In addition to trombonist Bill Watrous, I recognized clarinetist Abe Most and drummer Gregg Field (Mancini's son-in-law and a Count Basie alumnus). I was privileged to have seen and heard Mr. Mancini conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra on numerous occasions.

The good stuff never really goes out of style.

Beautifully written and well crafted, this man is under rated in the world of jazz, meanwhile he's one of the best. Love , Love , Love

Brings back such fond memories of this band. Like others who have provided input, I first encountered this iconic arrangement from the 1975 Cadillac 8 track tape that I literally wore out when I was a kid. Then in 1984 I was lucky to hear Mancini and what looks like this very same band in concert in Utah with Ella Fitzgerald as guest soloist--a life changing concert. Afterwards I snuck backstage as the musicians were putting their instruments away and seized a chance to talk shop with my hero, Don Menza. He was gracious and generous with anecdotes and advice to a young tenor player and even showed off little custom touches on his horn. What a great guy. And without a doubt one of the most exciting big bands that ever performed!

Most of those musicians would have been young adults during the big band era. How cool is that?

Mr. Mancini forgot his old friend Jerry Gray who was the best man at his wedding. Jerry Gray arrange for Shaw and Miller and wrote many songs including String of Pearls and Pennsylvania 6500. Jerry Gray took Mancini under his wing when he came out to LA.

Good grief! Welk ran what was known as a "mickey mouse band"and occasionally provided backing orchestrations ie for Johnny Hodges. He really had no depth of feeling for swing or jazz!

I beg to differ. Henry Mancini had the BEST sidemen in the business! Bill Watrous, Don Menza, Pete Candoli, Ronnie Lang, etc. You just don't get much better than this! This is a top-notch performance!
