Leadgate (Bradley) opencast coming to a close fairly soon.
Quite a controversial site since it began
It's been fascinating to follow how they took the coal from the ground, exposing old underground workings here and there.
Hard to see how they made a profit with all those huge machine to run and the enormous volume soil/clay/shale/rock that had to be moved.

The ratio is 17:1. So 8.5 million tonnes of top soil, sub soil and rock were removed. Banks didn't get the anticipated 5000,000 tonnes of coal Around 400,000 tonnes was excavated. Imagine all that CO2 in the atmosphere when it's burnt.
