"The definitive biography of Pistol Pete Maravich"
ESPN
This is, by far, the most complete Pistol Pete Maravich mix covering both the NBA (Hawks, Jazz, Celtics) and the NCAA (LSU).
Thanks to Wayne Federman and the Pete Maravich Memorial Basketball Camp in Clearwater Florida for the vintage old school clips.
I've seen some of these clips many times and I still get chills watching them. Pistol Pete is truly one of greatest to ever lace up a pair of sneakers.
Everyone knows Pete holds the college scoring record with 44 per game but something a lot of a people dont know is that The former LSU head coach marked down every shot he made and said that if there was a 3 pt line he would of averaged 13 3's per game and upped his average to 57 pts per game.
larreey I never said Press Maravich , i said former LSU head coach... Dale Brown to be specific. But you probably know more than him considering he only coached at LSU for 25 years. Oh do you want a source? well here you go en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Maravich its under college, second paragraph. Maybe next time before you spout your mouth off like an internet tough guy you should think twice pal
larreey if your read another biography like Pistol, that piece of information would be in there about making 57 points a game. There is a documentary called Pistol: The Life and Times of Pete Maravich, and that would also be in there as well. "Try separating myth from the legend next time ya post somethin on Pistol. Poseur" (larrey, march 2014). I think this applies to you.
This guy is one of the greatest, most inspirational players ever. And to think that he was doing this with a heart condition where he had no left coronary artery (only his right artery) makes it all the more extraordinary. The more one plays basketball, the more one would realize how incredible this guy is. He deserves all the accolades and more.
Long live the Pistol. The best baller I ever saw.
They called me Pistol in HS before I even knew who he was.
This is the video I was looking for.
"You don't get here by just wishing." Best damn quote i have ever heard. Rest in peace, Pistol Pete.
Way ahead of his time for the ball handling skills he had. Decades ahead. Only difference is he's not palming and carrying every time he touches the ball
Teerever Man you don't know enough about ball handling if you think that's the only difference
julchu0 and you don't know what a figure of speech is. Try again
Teerever Man apparently neither do you lmao. Once again you don't know shit
Thank goodness this type of talent is immortalized by FILM. Great video, great player.
Having watched Pistol Pete's entire college career, this
mix tape brings back fond memories-great job!Pete was not only an original, but way ahead of his time!
I'm telling you, had the ABA allowed Dr J to be with the hawks (Or if Philly made a trade for Maravich), Erving and Maravich would have been one of the "Greatest Duo's" that ever played the game.
San Diego nah Maravich and doctor j got along really well while half those players u named weren't close to each other. Maravich and j in the all star games loved playing together
Well, Atlanta (and Dr J and his agent) tried. They (not surprisingly) worked well together and appreciated each others' game.
I've often thought about Pete and Earl the Pearl in the same line up. Or in a matchup against each other.
Pete revolutionized the game. He bought the game to a level that no other player ever will or could do. I watched him play in college and the pros in person, and he left you breathless most every time.
Definately my favorite player of all time.
The older I get the more amazing it becomes to me what he meant to basketball and how advanced he was. The game needed to catch up to Pete. Bravo Pete Rest Easy Brother!
unstoppable! thanks pete.i was a kid of 14 in 1968 and we all wore socks like you and started passing behind our back,no look etc.you are best ever, bar none!
The man was such a pure shooter, he very rarely hits rim regardless of where the shot is from or how tough the D is. There has never been another player with his combination of shooting accuracy, ball control skills and showmanship. There have been several with two of the three but no one with all three...I know you're at peace, Pete.
Pete has dimes, ball handling skills are like no other. All people who love the game, are blessed with skill.
Thanks for this tribute. Pete was a man ahead of his time. He would have fared better in today's NBA.
Finger rolls, sky hooks, passes, shots you name it dude can do it all.
Pistol Pete................. Lots of great memories from this NBA Ledgend......... Undoutably one of the greatest ever!!!
God Bless you Brother!!! I hope you are fast - breakin' - shakein' and bakin' in Heaven!
A man ahead of his time. He had the sickest crossover before there even was a crossover, and played with more style than anyone in his era. A shame one of these greats had to leave us.
R.I.P. and thank you for everithing you think, for everithing you do....for your skills, for your hair, for you style.....
ONE OF THE BEST EVER
there will never be another person who could even come close to matching his skill.
R.I.P. much love
at 0:12 seconds i opened a new tab to play "lose yourself" while watching this video. made it much more enjoyable.
THE BEST I've ever seen. Ball handling, passing, shooting!
He is sooooooo good! One of the best of all time.
He was phenomenally ahead of his time," said Hall of Fame center Bob Lanier, "And I could tell you to this day he is the only player I've seen that I would pay to see play."
"He was and is my idol," said Phoenix Suns coach Mike D'Antoni, "even though he was only two years older than me." "He was just so far ahead of the game with his ball handling and creativity." "To see him...could you truly realize what he could do and how important he was to the game."
Totally amazing!! NO ONE plays like that today and they NEVER will.
Wow this is the first footage ive ever seen of pete maravich, truly as transcendent as jordan, what an innovator
Immagine basketball today without him...
All my respect and thanks to this amazing player!
The most incredible shot maker I have ever seen - and I've seen them all.
Great video man. Pete played like no one else, ever.
Greatest player ever to touch a basketball. PERIOD.!!!!
The moves at 2:28 and 4:20 are absolutely unreal. I'm proud that I got to see Pete play in person with the New Orleans Jazz back in the day.
his number 7 is also retired in the Superdome and the New Orleans Arena...and I agree it is so awesome.
I don't know what I like to watch more, his shooting or his trick passes... mind blowing stuff!
He was one of the best ever. No one one passes like that anymore.
That loop long pass I learned from him and used many times, it is very useful at fastbreaks.. Best tricker guard ever!
This man is the sickest dribbler ever. I don't even care about the points; the good stuff is his slick passing.
one of the best guards to ever exist. he innovated a lot of the things that seem so normal to a professional player today. he deserved a championship for sure.
Absolutely, one of the best showmen of all-time. Before Magic, there was Pistol and before Pistol, there was Cousy.
wow this is the guy who started all the fancy stuff. I love players who are great but make the game fun to watch too. he is definitely one of the best players I ever watched. rather watch him then alot of other players.only put a few up there with him but he might be the best to ever play the game.
Did he ever miss ?!?!
This guy is a legend, soo ahead of his time !
How would you expect us to do research without reading biographies? I saw him play and have cited the greatest basketball players, coaches, sport writers, and the fact that he was voted one of the 50 greatest to ever play as proof that he was a great player. Again not just some but the overwhenlming majority of players were in awe of Pete.
perfect form... along with many other things. his shot is so smooth
this is the best basketball vid i've seen on youtube. awesome!
pete maravich was the definition of streetball moves in the 70s and 80s
he made some of the sickest passes ever made!!
Same here, I can't get enough of it.
"Pistol" Pete Maravich was one of the most phenomeonal basketball players ever! He did things that were advanced during his time, and still, hasn't got much respect for it. Did anybody know that the Atlanta Hawks have not retired his #44 yet! Come on Hawks management! He was the Atlanta Hawks first true superstar!
Pistol Pete was and is the the Best,"The Man" could shoot, dribble, bounce, pass(with ease) Pete new when to do anything and everything on the court. Pistol Pete made Basketball an art! By far out does any Basketball player on the court past and present.Petes shooting ability was an art! His team playing was impeccable!
One of the best to ever do it! R.I.P
GREAT job on this video man. Excellent.
I agree that others are probably tired of us as well and we should stop. 514, I have enjoyed your dialogue and I appreciate your knowledge on the history of basketball. God Bless You too my friend.
He's just simply amazing
that feel, knowing where the hoop is ...
"In the Zone"
... there's nothing like it.
The one who mastered the JUMP SHOT. Pistol Pete, we miss you.
No one practiced as hard as PETE "the PISTOL " MAVARICH ,HE WAS ALWAYS A TEAM PLAYER N PLAYERS ALWAYS JEALOUS OF HIS SKILLZ HE WORKED SO HARD TO PERFECT ALL HIS MOVES ,PETES FATHER GAVE PETE THE ULTIMATE GIFT OF LOVE ,PETES PARENTS ARE THE REASON FOR HIS SUCCESS WHEN YOUNG CAUSE THE MAVARICH FAMILY WAS A TEAM N T.E.A.M. STANDS FOR "Together, Everyone, Acheives ,More ,"
onparr did a really good job of matching music+video,
remember if u want to be a spec of what he was, he practiced 8 hours a day, that made him the best college player in history and the best ballhandler this world has ever seen, so when i get tired playing b-ball i never quit because i remember pete's hard work
Dat wrist pass is killer! He truly da original. First time I learned about Pistol I thought ol schools were crazy but dis guy could be here now and still dominate and amaze. He da originated what Steve Nash is doin. I didnt get to see his whole career but he looked like da best pure point guard I ever seen.
Pistol Pete was the greatest basketball player I ever saw. No one else has ever equalled him on the basketball court (sorry Michael Jordan) and no one probably ever will. Today's "great" players have trouble averaging even 20 points per game. Pete averaged well over 40 even before there was a three-point line. Now, that's AWESOME!
Pete was awesome. His offensive arsenal was one of the best. Only knock on him would be his consistency.
What a great player! The man scored 68 points against Clyde Frazier, who was considered the great perimeter defender of the 1970's.
Wilt, Dr. J., Baylor, Magic, Isaiah, (the player-not the prophet)Rick Barry, Bird, Nash, and others who saw him play or viewed his instruction tapes were in awe of Pete's skills. As Bob Dylan commented concerning Pete's abilities: "The holy terror of the courts...He could have played blind."
this video is amazing the best one ive seen by far i watch it almost everyday and its still the best basketball ive ever seen... and it soungs sweet with the song you shook me all night long lol
the audio was good as it was... i loved it
The shorter college 3 point line that exists today would have added 7-11 more points every game to Maravich's 44 pt. average. The generous assist system now used in the NBA would have added 6 more assists per game to his assist average. Greatest passer I have ever seen and I'm 62 years old watching the NBA for 45++ years.
Happy Birthday! Pete would have been 61 today. You are missed.
This guy is the most magical player in NBA history. I mean the things he did with the basketball rival Jordan. They greatly contributed to the flashy era we see today.
Beyond Wilt it is tough to pick a greatest ever. Maravich was a special player. A great among greats in the pros and THE greatest college player ever. He worked hard and loved the game. Kobe and Magic look up to Pistol Pete. I wish that all you young guys could have seen him play.
And Cousy declared In the book "I remember Pete Maravich" that if Pete was ever allowed to play the point guard position because he had players to compliment him he would have been the best ever at that position. He stated that in terms of creativity only Pete was in the same class as him. Pete's passing abilities and ability to create his won shot were unique at that position.
Pistol Pete was showtime he was way ahead of his time
my god, he is fucking amazing. no nba athlete today has as much style.
AWESOME!!!
A great selection of music to compliment these highlights. Was that Larry Bird at the 5 minute mark with the assist to Pistol Pete? I had almost forgotten about Pistol's time in Boston at the end of his career.
Please no name calling. If we didn't have people who disagreed we couldn't debate. I think Anthony's observations are shared by many people. In fact I once posed the observation of Pete's greatness to a man his early 70's who had seen Pete in person and he said "Pete was just an entertainer".
how is this guy not talk about for atleast being a top 5 point gaurd!!!love his passing so creativ
DAMN, point guard prototype, 4 real! Cold vicious! The inventor! All these descriptions were earned by pistol, but one stands out, legend.
R.I.P.
Pistol Pete has arguably the best jump shot ever.
These quotes are taken from the following article: "Pistol Pete Maravich; A 20 Year Retrospective"
by Kelsdad
created January 06, 2008
That's quite all right(the typos that is). Minor point but actually, Pete scored 53 against a St. John's team that was at the time ranked in the top 20. And the 40 were scored in the last 15 min. Lou said that it was the most electrifying 15 min of Basketball he had ever seen. I agree, Pistol's skills were inimitable.
Every shot that goes in is a perfect swish.
With his long socks and longer hair, Maravich was at first resented by his teammates with the Atlanta Hawks, who first drafted Maravich. "It was hard not to," said former teammate Lou Hudson, "because we didn't understand his game, we had never seen anything like him before."
incredible styles !!!im shocked i never heard of pistol pete maravic before but in my opinion hes NO 1 ! Pistol did moves no 1 did have seen before and maybe no 1 will ever see again ! Even without a title A LEGEND RIP
great video. he was way ahead of his time.
He was guarded by three guys half the time. The misses include shots he took when he was fouled and in the "old" NBA he got hammered. He was a great shooter. He only took 15 shots with the 3 point rule but I believe he made 8 or 9. Pete was lights out.
Cant wait to see you in heaven Pete.
Thanks for the post Onparr
Pistol Pete is my favorite player ever!
In college + NBA in his time if they a 3 point line he would close to the most points ever.
forget about john stockton, steve nash, chris paul, and the present point gaurds, pistol pete will always be the classic, the "style" of basketball. your story inspires me to put your hard work and determination into basketball. RIP.
The toughest shots he made are the high scoops off the glass as seen in 3:47. That takes a great amount of finesse, Gervin and Erving were the only other ones who could do them quite like that.
I always heard the name Pete Maravich but never really cared. After I read he averaged a ridiculous 44 ppg, I had to look him up.
Truly a player that transcended his time, man. Wow, just amazing.
damn, that is a beautiful stroke, not to mention all the other things he transformed basketball into. Bob Cousy did it in the 50's and Maravich did it in the 70's.
Nissalke, who coached the Jazz, thought so much of Pete as a player that during the 79-80 season, he benched Pete for an entire month! He finally waived Pete after the first 17 games of the 80-81 season. The civil rights act that you are referring to outlawed segregation in 1964. Pete was drafted in 1970, so he did not come in" just" after segregation.
His jumper is so smooth.
One of The best passers and best dribblers
"You don't get here by just wishin'." Best part of the video. Too bad so many Americans believe wishing is all that is required either to achieve something or earn respect.
I heard Pistol Pete at the 80s, when I was a kid.
I never saw him playing until I saw him on youtube.
He has so many crazy moves. Generally, one player has 2-3 good moves.
A good player may have 10.
He has 100-200 (it looks like he invent moves in real time).
When he pass, even the ball is not sure where to go.
pete is unbelievable, but you cant say he is the best ever based on college ball.
pistol pete made basketball fun. i think people nowadays forget that this is the way its supposed to be.
ive been a pistol pete fan a long time. i think he is still untouched by any other point guard.
never heard of him until i got him in nba 2k13 myteam. THIS DUDE IS BEAST!
We need another Pete Maravich in the NBA.
The Pistol started what we saw from Magic then J Will & Nash. His Passes were sick accurate & his ball handling skills were 2nd to none.
