Remember Godzilla? Remember King Kong?? Well they're back! Again! Godzilla vs. Kong is a movie with Godzilla and King Kong in it and it's out now and that's the movie.

They should have Mike and Jay independently edit a Half in the Bag episode and release them simultaneously so we can see how the Bauman Cut differs from the Stoklasa Cut.

When a character explains the “science” for the plot and stops himself halfway through to say “doesn’t matter” you know we got a solid script here.
It came off to me as just a little nod to the hollow earth thing. Haven't seen the movie tho

Then after destroying Mechagodzilla, I was fully expecting Kong and Godzilla, as they lay there exhausted, to give each other an "I'm too old for this shit" look, then laugh hysterically and wince at how much pain they're in before helping each other to their feet.
Cue the smooth jazz saxaphone.
Don't forget the scene where they sit in Kongs Cadillac and quarrel about the radio stations 😀 let's make the next movie be called ancient weapon!

Orson Welles actually planned to make Kane vs. Kong, but the studios wouldn't let him accomplish his vision, so he slightly altered the screenplay and turned it into The Magnificent Ambersons.
That's actually what the lost footage from The Magnificent Ambersons is: the human characters all fade into the background as Charles Foster Kane unleashes Mechagodzilla on the city and King Kong has to stop him.

The most unrealistic part of the movie was having a structure 35 floors underground in Pensacola, FL. You can't dig 20ft before hitting the water table there.
The movie also features a global underground hyperloop and an entire tropical ecosystem sustained by artificial lighting.
I love how Conspiracy guy needed a special ID badge to look at a Metal Eye (if anyone saw that, they wouldnt be able to fathom what its actually used for) but there ISN'T an ID badge required to get to the subterranean titan trafficking hyperloop that leads an Illuminati pyramid in Hong Kong that hosts Monster fighting.

That neon lighting in Hong Kong is much more reminiscent of the Hong Kong fight in Pacific Rim, which takes place in the exact same part of the city lol
I really got the impression that they were trying to channel _Pacific Rim_ (just the first one) and what made it successful and beloved when their own little series combining two iconic characters weren't getting nearly the same amount of love. It also made sense for the premise and plot, whereas being inspired by something like _Jaws_ was more appropriate for _Godzilla_ back in 2014.

What's funny is Citizen Kane recycled rear projected backgrounds from King Kong for an out door party scene. You can see what looks like pterodactyls flying past some of the tents.
The correlation between Godzilla destroying a city and Charles Kane destroying his room was amazing.
The only thing I could think of while watching that, was they should have spliced in a scene of Zaat!.

IT did illustrate exactly what Mike and Jay was talking about when they said the monster movie had a lot of extra bass in the sound design. I was genuinely impressed with it when they cut the CK and monster movie together, as otherwise I'd probably never even notice the sound design in this youtube vid.
As such, I don't doubt that because of the sound thing, Mike and Jay are right that this was probably better in a theater.
Also, like someone said in a comment waaaay above us, they should have inserted Zaat smashing up the pharmacy as well.
Talk about that scene of Kane destroying the bedroom all you want, but all I see is Zaat destroying the pharmacy.

Ghidora's brain was in Mecha Godzilla, while the skull itself acted as a connection to the brain. It's explained in the movie, albeit poorly, that Ghidora's three heads had a psychic connection with one another. They tekked the tek and put it in the skull to make a remote connection to the brain and then put a VR connection in the skull.
Ghidora being alive (technically) is why Godzilla is losing his shit and attacking everything.
It's explained terribly, but it's all there.

The exposition for the plot felt exactly like the kind of stuff they throw at you before you get on the theme park ride to setup whatever kind of wacky 6 minute adventure you're about to go on.

Apparently, after doing a little digging, it turns out Godzilla did not kill the other titans after the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Rather, in a comic called Godzilla: Dominion he apparently commands them all to go back into hibernation, because he sensed Ghidorah's presence and was worried that they would fall back under Ghidorah's control. (Presumably this presence was actually Mechagodzilla.)
He did kill one of them who tried to challenge him (the big octopus one, I think? Syclla?) presumably because they still needed a giant monster fight in their comic. But the rest are still alive, just hibernating, so they can still have Rodan in another film if they want.
(Godzilla wants to fight Kong in this film because Kong, unlike the other Titans, won't submit to him. Rodan is listed as "defeated" in the movie because he submitted to Godzilla.)

Citizen Kane actually does have a King Kong connection, in that they used rear projection from King Kong in one scene, so there are pterodactyls in the background of one scene of Kane.

Kong popping his shoulder back: When I saw it, I instantly thought that’s like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 2. Then in the credits, under “featuring properties licensed from...” Among the previous Godzilla and Kong films, there was Lethal Weapon 2.
So I wondered if the shoulder pop was so iconic, lawyers said they have to license it.
Random shot, I messaged the director on Instagram, and surprisingly, he replied.
Turns out, it is a homage but the license is for other, more direct references to LW2 in the film that were cut.
Jokingly, I said to my wife that the next movie with Kong and Godzilla was going to be a buddy cop film. Who knew?

Would love to see that get a ride, but can't imagine when that would actually open if at all. The most impressive thing about Kong vs. Godzilla is that Mike and Jay found a way to make a 40 minute video about it.

I loved how the humans and Kong had to go on this long expedition to hollow earth, and then later Godzilla just drills a hole straight into it with his breath.
What blows the mind is how Kongs throne is just coincidentally under Hong Kong where the Apex guy had his mecha lab, and that Kongs jumps DOWN into the hole Godzilla made from ABOVE and that both can see/hear the other 3500 miles away

I think the "oops I'm dead" trope is probably borrowed from the cartoon world, most notably Looney Tunes. This is basically the main gag of every Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons

Coran Horn is a new pilot in the squadron, he is force sensitive and learns a bit about the force, but it is not a focal point of the series. For movies, it's Rogue One. But that was a dumb wasted potential of a movie.

I legitimately had no idea there were this many recent Godzilla movies.
I'd recommend checking out the 2014 one, it's a slow film but it also does a great job establishing the scale of power of the creatures
2014 and Skull Island are both good but totally different. KotM is action trash. GvK is KotM but actually fun.

I really like how they made the story and monsters more mythic and fantastical. It definitely felt like an ancient myth, with the "titans," the underworld full of monsters, and King Kong's throne and magical axe. I think that's the best way to do this kind of movie, rather than trying to make it seem scientific or realistic, when it never really can be.
That moment with Kong resetting his dislocated shoulder has to be a Lethal Weapon 2 callback.

Im still shocked because the biggest plot pill for me to swallow was that Mechagodzilla wasn't defeated by Kong, Godzilla , or the both of them together. It was the kiwi kid spilling water on the keyboard that really saved the world. Like if late at night that janitor while cleaning plugs in his vacume cleaner while unplugging the skynet computer and now the world was safe from judgement day.
That was a reference to the Orochi myth from Japan, in which alcohol is the key to defeating a monster. Fitting in a Godzilla movie.
Its an unofficial running joke that Mechagodzilla is so OP that in no movie he's in is he ever defeated by anything other than some insane bullshit never previously established in the film. Like Jay said it is a pro and a con; so stupid its fun, but youre also like "wtf"

There's a lot of video game companies that are thriving with a much smaller size, and to be fair, the video game industry is the only industry that can makes it with such conditions : vfx studios and 3D movie studios are not capable of doing it with such low numbers. You can make a video game in your garage with a bunch of friends if you want, and it can still be a success. Some people even make games alone and makes a few hit success.

@Lee Hansen it depends on how you define "good places to work" but when there's so much people working on a project there's only so much of your own ideas you can put to the table. On a small team you are much more involved in the project. In a AAA studio you will do a very specific thing for years on end, it can be very boring, and that's the closest you can get to those VFX studios that work for big blockbuster movies, to me.

The aircraft carrier sized ship cap sizing and being upside down in the water for five minutes, then flipping back over and everyone is a little wet and in the same room. That broke my head.
That's actually a real thing that can happen. In fact, if the drive system of a carrier-class ship is ever disabled, the highest ranking officer on board can order the crew to simultaneously rush to one side of the ship. This creates a massive weight imbalance which causes the ship to topple sideways. Once the ship is upside down, the crew simply reposition to the other side, thus flipping the ship back over. This causes the keel to act as a giant paddle-wheel, thus propelling the ship. That said, this was a classified maneuver and was rarely used.
