In a Swedish class a few years ago, we were talking about Christmas and Sweden. I mentioned “jävla geten” instead of “Gävlebocken” much to the teachers amusement!!!! 😂

I remember once trying to say "I'm full (have eaten enough)" and picked the words out literally: "Jag är full" (which would be taken to mean "I am drunk"). Or perhaps I was even foolish enough to pronounce it like "jag är ful" (ugly).

haha, this is so funny. Thanks for sharing! It is very tricky with mätt (have eaten enough), full (drunk) and ful (ugly). I am sure you are not the only one who has mix them up. Thanks again for sharing :)

I'm a native English speaker. I lived in Sweden as en exchange student in the 80s. It was my job to do the vaccuming in my Swedish host family's house every Friday. On one ocassion, I couldn't find the vacuum cleaner and so I asked my host mother where I could find the "damsugare" (lady sucker) instead of the "dammsugare" (dust sucker). ; )

I went to pick up my parcel and challenged myself to do this in Swedish. Before I left the house, my husband said: Remember: "hämta" is to "pick up" and "lämna" to leave. So while walking to the place I kept saying hämta-lämna, hämta-lämna, hämta-lämna... And as soon as I walked up to the cashier I said "Jag skulle vilja HÄMNA mitt packet" (so I said I wanted to AVENGE my parcel :)) The guy was quite surprised :D

Not Swedish but I know you speak Spanish too, so I'll share this. When I was studying Spanish I wanted to say that I went for a run in the park, but instead of saying "Hoy he corrido en el parque" I said "Hoy me he corrido en el parque" because in my language you would say something like "Today I made myself running in the park" 🙊🙊🙊 everyone in class laughed at my sentence and from that day I've become fully aware of the use of "me" along with the verb "correr" hahaha 🙈🙈🙈

I personally call this time when you can't say a word "accumulation period" and from my point of view this is not only because you afraid of making mistakes. It's also about to be polite, so you don't want Swedish people to hear how you bad at Swedish) I still have the same filling speaking with native English speakers and this is why it's easy to speak English with my Swedish friends - sometimes we both speak Wronglish)

Gratis = kostar inget (free of charge). Exempel: Kanelbullen är gratis. Du behöver inte betala.

Its interesting that a teacher in sweden does not speak Swedish on such a basic level that they understand that Slut means End. How are they suppose to help the students understand English if they can only explain it in English, a language they are learning.
