  • Charles '' Buddy '' Bolden, generally recognized as the first king of New Orleans cornet players, followed by Freddie Keppard (the second) and Joe Oliver (the third), never recorded, although it is said he may have recorded some cylinders, to date not yet found. So it has been wondered what his style could be.
Bunk Jonson tried to give an idea of it in his 1943 recording by playing some versions of ''Make me a Pallet on the floor'' (Bunk Johnson duet with pianist Bertha Consoulin - happyfeetjazz.... ), as part of a medley of Bolden tunes (''Bolden Medley'' - jazzhotbigstep.... - at 09-33).
Someone claims that Bolden's style was close to the way Louis Armstrong plays his '' Cornet Chop Suey '' with the Hot Five in 1926
    (syncopatedtime... ).
Jelly Roll Morton has recolled Buddy Bolden making in 1938-1939 three recordings of '' Buddy Bolden's Blues '', his composition inspired by a Traditional
('' Funky Butt ''), which was in Buddy Bolden's repertoire,
    (books.google.i..., ).
One recording as ''I thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say '' on Sept. 14, 1939 with Jelly Roll Morton's New Orleans Jazzmen [Mx. 041458-1 on Bluebird B-10434 and others (see Brian Rust), than issued also on CD: Classics 645CD - see:
    books.google.i... ]
and 2 recordings as piano solo and own voc., one for the famous ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, made on May - Dec., 1938 at the United States Library of Congress [ acetate number 1658 A - Circle 77 (see Brian Rust)] , [Circle jm-77, excerpt (see : www.78discogra... )] , [''The Library of Congress Recordings'' on Rounder CD 1092 as: ''Buddy Bolden's Blues'' and also on / in Rounder CD 1888 as: ''The Great Buddy Bolden / Buddy Bolden’s Blues''
see 1658 A) ], and the other, of shorter duration, for himself on December 16, 1939 (General 4003 - Mx. R-2570, according to Brian Rust).
    Here are the 3 tunes:
    01:01 ''I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say'' (Traditional - arr. J.R. Morton) - J.R. Morton's New Orleans Jazzmen - voc. J.R. Morton - Rec. N.Y. Sept. 14, 1939 - Bluebird B-10434 - Mx. 041458-1, downloaded from ''Jazz-on-Line'' as ''Buddy Bolden's Blues'':

    Personnel according to Brian Rust:
JELLY ROLL MORTON'S NEW ORLEANS JAZZMEN: Jelly Roll Morton, p, v, dir - Sidney de Paris, t / Claude Jones, tb / Albert Nicholas, cl / Sidney Bechet, ss / Happy Caldwell, ts / Lawrence Lucie, g / Wellman Braud, sb / Zutty Singleton, d.
04:45 ''Buddy Bolden's Blues'' (J.R. Morton) - J.R. Morton piano solo and voc. with commentary - Rec. Library of Congress May-Dec. 1938 - Circle jm-77 and Rounder CD 1092, downloaded from ''Jazz-on -Line'' :
    www.jazz-on-lin...
    09:26 ''Buddy Bolden's Blues'' (J.R. Morton) - J.R. Morton piano solo and voc. - Rec. N.Y. Dec. 16, 1939 - General 4003 - Mx. R 2570, downloaded from ''Internet Archive'': archive.org/de... .
It is truly unfortunate that the black musicians of New Orleans did not record in the 1910s, that, for example, Bolden, Chris Kelly, Buddy Petit and so many others left us no recordings and that, for example, Freddie Keppard and King Oliver did not record in 1910s, although in reality Keppard, jealous of his style, did not agree to do so in 1916, a year before the O.D.J.B., when they were in full physical strength and, according to some contemporary musicians, played in public, especially Oliver, in ''different '' way from what one hears in 1920s recordings, starting from 1923 !

Turn back the pages, go back to the original jazzman, blowing his heart out on the streets of New Orleans over a century ago. Thanks Buddy, wish you had lived to appreciate all that you started! ❤😊

Here I like to point out a Creole cornet player from New Orleans, interesting and little known by most: Ernest Coycault (see video ruclips.net/video/AvOt9X0-fO0/видео.html).
