  • In a small town just one hour away from the beautiful city of Guanajuato, My friends and I explore a region known for being home to some of the last Chichimeca people. This Oto-Manguean group and its customs represent an indigenous side of Mexico that is often overlooked, a side which I was curious to find out about.

It was really nice of that guy to tell you about his whole family living there, his language, etc. I imagine someone randomly walking up to me and asking that and I'd be super suspicious. Still this is amazing. I'm gonna binge this channel. So fascinating. Edit: I read another comment where you explain how myopic western viewpoints on privacy can be so now this video has more context. Thanks again.

Yes I lived in Mexico for many years, so i understand the culture. In area's where there's little industry, people are often careful as they've very little. And yes they are very suspicious, and with reason! I was alway's prepared to give a gift or money, esp when someone had gone out of the way to help! I moved to Mexico to open business, granted I'm gringo but at that time,i hadn't much money! I often needed my business watched over night, so I'd ask local police or someone ,then i give money! In all cases, when I'd gave $ for service, it was done in a manner of understanding and respect. I also have a big interest in Indigenous languages declining ,I've my opinion on why where loosing languages,at such an alarming rate ,it upsets me very much! It's one reason I payed my employees far above scale and made sure they where insured! Languages are mainly lost because if you don't speak English or Spanish, you simply won't get a job! If you live in Guerrero Mexico and only speak Nahuatl" you'll never get a job, despite its the native tongue of the state! This is only one of the many reasons....

Such a great and informative video. Thank you for sharing a side of a Mexico that’s often forgotten and unspoken of. I myself am Mexican indigenous of the Mixtec people who lives in the region of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Puebla.

When finding these speakers, how do you reduce their aversion to strangers like yourself coming in and asking about their language? Also, have you considered contacting academics so they could make your search easier?

I typically get to know them on a people to people basis to show that we are both human, but oftentimes in the countries I visit people are rarely bothered by strangers and instantly consider them friends (it’s not a very familiar concept in most western nations where life is very private). As for academics, I typically prefer finding speakers myself because 1) searching allows me to meet people and get to know the area/village along the way and 2) it is a more authentic interaction when it isn’t planned, as well as most academic institutions couldn’t help me more than the locals who already possess the knowledge and can help me while there
