Rafael Nadal - KING OF CLAY He didn’t say that, he said when he puts together a perfect lap he’s unbeatable. He also said very clearly that Lewis was generally better at qualifying than he was.
Rafael Nadal - KING OF CLAY I’m just saying what he said, to illustrate what he didn’t say. He didn’t once even imply that he thought he was better than Lewis.
A really good interview and a very good interviewing technique too; gave Jenson plenty of time to speak and finish his points while steering the conversation with a very light touch.
Nice clickbait title. Obviously, *"Is Lewis Hamilton a good guy?"* isn't posed to Button. Next time, use one of these: *_"Why Lewis Hamilton Hasn't Been Knighted"_* or *_"Jenson Button Will be Knighted Before Lewis Hamilton"_* ;-) 13:39 Can anyone enlighten me as to these wheel-to-wheel fights? Button was a good driver, but not in HAM's league where outright speed and wheel-to-wheel combat are concerned. It took a personal implosion, heavily influenced by matters in his private life, for HAM to lose to Button over the course of a season. No one objectively assessing 2011, HAM's racing annus horribilis, would call it otherwise. Button needed all his level-headedness and the benefit of ~7 more years in F1 to overcome an imploding HAM for that 1 season. 16:00 It's far simpler. HAM could and can still drive just about anything extremely quickly whereas Button was average when the car setup wasn't to his liking.
Fanboys like you in any sport are pretty tragic. Of course he was in his league. He outraced him on many occasions throughout the 3 years. Hamilton as button says was much more consistently fast in qualifying, although not always. Presumably you have a range of excuses for Hamilton to explain why Button was able to out qualify and out race Hamilton throughout the 3 years on different occasions. It's much simpler to just be honest and say, sometimes Button was faster/better, sometimes Hamilton was faster/better. Overall Hamilton was and had more success than Button, particularly in qualifying. It was a closely fought competition between the two.

Lewis Hamilton's history, ability, talent, stats and ultimately his story... tells that he is arguably, not only the best driver in the world but the best ever f1 driver to date.
But you have to look at the car and the competition. There are drivers from the past who had tougher competition, like Senna who was up against some of the best drivers the sport has ever seen. In a car which didn't have a huge advantage, like Merc do at the moment.
@@BlatentlyFakeName either way lewis is definitely one of the goats. When he did have competition 14-18 as well as 07-08 he performed quite well and up to the standards of the prosts, sennas, shumachers.
In terms of driving intelligence Jenson Button was arguably the greatest. His ability to manage fuel and tyres, his smoothness, was and is, untouchable.
This is such an excellent, in-depth, and interesting interview. The questions were very engaging and JB is gold. The whole Hamilton in the title was totally unnecessary.
Apparently, Hamilton hasn't improved himself since 2012. The Hamilton who Button went up against is nowhere near the Hamilton we see today; way more complete, way more composed, way more calculated, way more experienced. Also, any driver pairing that doesn't have to go through team orders and has the best car for an extended period of time will fall out. No question. If Alonso or Verstappen would've been placed next to Rosberg at Mercedes, the same shenanigans would've occurred between 2014-2016. The young guns like Verstappen and Leclerc keep Hamilton sharp; they're like him in his first few years in the sport; HUNGRY to beat everyone. Together with Mercedes, Hamilton is the modern and improved embodiment of the Schumacher-Ferrari partnership who took on similar young guns like Räikkönen and Montoya two decades ago. The fact that he had to get beat by the likes of Button and Rosberg, two world champions, to get where he is today is something he'll undoubtedly take for granted. It's only improved him as a whole.
But what's the point of th8s comment? Button literally says in the video that Lewis has improved a lot since they were teammates. Did you watch the video?
I remember in 2013 when Jenson took his F1 McLaren to the streets of Frome, (mine and his home town) hearing the V8 engine in real life was one of my greatest experiences
Jenson you did very well against lewis but in 2 of your 3 seasons against him he was comfortably better. 2012 he finished ahead despite losing over 100 points through failures. Lets get the record straight
Jenson Button is one of my favorite F1 drivers. The titling of the interview with the Lewis Hamilton nonsense was right silly, I'd have watched the interview with Jenson, regardless of the Hamilton silliness.
I was at Silverstone back in 2012 and most of the crowd in the stands opposite the pits rooted for button when he appeared but ignored us walking straight to his garage but it was only that lewis guy who stopped and acknowledged us all at the crowd and Lewis was the only driver that waved and even gave us the thumbs up going as far as peeping through the board marker gate
Whenever jenson is asked about Lewis, He always says he was quick and then goes on for hours about how he was better than Hamilton. He always makes himself sound so much better than he actually was
I wouldn't say he's better but he is still a world champion and done it with a team with little money and little hope and also beat Lewis a few times with the same machine but Jenson would have to be at his best all the time to be competitive with an off pace Lewis, now put max verstapen in the same car as Lewis and then Lewis would have problems
I’ve just finished Jensen’s book and he says that Lewis is probably the greatest of all time. He’s proud that there were a few moments in his career when he was able to beat him but Lewis set a bar that he couldn’t reach.
When they were teammates, Button was able to match an inexperienced Hamilton (comfortably beating him in 2011!). In 2012 Hamilton ironed out his flaws and has grown ever since.
Another mediocre racing driver with Green Eyed Monster trouble, he seemed reluctant to admit how Great Lewis is, does he not know how many world championships and pole positions he holds , Lewis is always polite, very generous and encourages all the young drivers to succeed in the future. Was very disappointed with his interview.
I've always liked Jenson. He's such a nice bloke, but here he's talking up his own race craft which doesn't suite him. Jenson you were a very good racing driver, but sorry to say you can't be measured with Hamilton. Be humble when you talk about you and Hamilton being teammates.
Bruh he definitely held his own against Lewis when they were teammates and beat him over one out of three seasons they were together (and the last one Jb was only 2 points behind). I would still say Lewis is better, but not by a massive amount and you can definitely compare the two and Jenson wasn't over hyping himself thats just the way it was.
@@maxbrennan8221 - we can call Hamilton spoiled or whatever, but he didn't feel inspired to achieve his best in a car that was far from a race winner. Button on the other hand had everyhing to win or prove. Usually Jenson is humble, but this time he was a bad looser not acknowledging Hamilton. If we set aside all the numbers, Hamilton is a much better racingdriver overall. Vettel and Rosberg are phenomenally fast over one lap and has built their racing carers on that. Button is known for his tire and fuel saving driving. But when compared to Hamilton they all lack the overtaking and racing skills. Or not to mention Hamiltons greatest asset, his racing awareness. Button being a countryman to Britain's biggest racing driver and not acknowledging him is just pathetic. Even more so when mentioning that Lewis Hamilton has a race winning car when winning all his titles. Jenson Button won his two titles in the most dominant Brawn. Listen to David Coldtardt. He was one of the cockiest drivers, but now when he's retired he praises Hamilton. So does all the British former F1 drivers but Button.
Acke I’m not playing down Hamilton’s driving at all, and I don’t think Jenson is either. In the video, he said that the Lewis he raced against is different from the Lewis of today, and of course that’s true - any sportsman changes over time. When Lewis fought for the title in 07, he lost it due to some rookie errors (he was a rookie, so it’s hard to fault him for that, but still). When he won in 08 it was far from a dominant performance as he was fighting with the Ferraris all season. Now we see him dominating the field because he’s the most complete driver on the grid, but it wasn’t always that way. Lewis was much younger than Jenson when they were team mates, and it’s fair to say that he probably learned a lot from him even though they were rivals. You don’t have to be better than someone to teach them something and Lewis probably learned a lot from Jenson’s racing style - as you mentioned, that was always a strength of his. In F1, you can’t be the best if you’re only a good qualifier, or only good on tyre management, or overtaking, or any of it. You have to be able to do it all to be successful, and Hamilton is so successful at the moment because he’s good at every aspect of racing - he’s a brilliant qualifier, fierce but fair in wheel to wheel racing, doesn’t crash a lot when making overtakes, good at managing tyres and fuel but can absolutely blitz the lap times if needed. But he didn’t always have all those skills and he probably learned not just from Jenson but all of his strong competitors along the way. Jenson isn’t failing to acknowledge Lewis’s talent, he’s just saying that back then he wasn’t the same driver he is now which is totally fair. No disrespect to either of them, I think Lewis is the better driver but Button is also very good and is 100% qualified to make the points that he did and talk in the way that he did which was very respectful and honest.
@@acke26 now whose making excuses, everyone knows Hamilton is better but you don’t need to be so butt hurt when someone gave him a challenge, I think Button was up there with Alonso and Rosberg in his most competitive team mates.
the problem with comparing schumacher and hamilton is that the racing is totally different. and the mercedes dominance, i never thought we might see it, is even more dominant than the Ferraris were.
@gladbecker82 4 wheels, a steering wheel. Seems pretty similar to me. Mercedes is indeed more impressive than Schumacher/Ferrari. But when you consider the disparity in budgets between Brawn/Todt,Rory ferrari and the field versus mercedes/redbull and ferrari - I'd wager what Lewis continues to accomplish is extraordinary. Schumacher enjoyed, number 1 status, a weak teammate, by far the largest budget, infinite testing - often at 3 circuits simultaneously, bespoke tires, all backed by the might of ferrari and the FIA.
I always remember the end of the 2008 season in Brazil and his 2008 Honda decided to catch fire.. It was a physical manifestation of his season. It's not over until it's over! He nearly lost his career but ended up beating Hamilton at Mclaren.
Seems abit salty about Lewis to me, To say Max has the most natural talent is out of jealousy imo, max makes way to many mistakes still lewis came straight in and won a championship. Good guy Jenson but not on that level with the greats
I think you’ve misunderstood what JB means by natural talent, his mistakes are what makes people refer to his natural talent, his mistakes are on the mental side. He’s not salty he’s giving his opinion at the time and it was shared by many. He may have a different opinion now.
Last year I was at a show and they had a simulator of being in the race car as Jenson is driving, It went round for 2 laps and the strain on my neck after 2 rounds and they do 60 to70 laps, tough job.
Only discovered your channel. Can imagine you too would have liked to have asked many other questions, but this is both really insightful and top quality journalism. 💥🤛🏽
Lovely guy and was fortunate enough to live near Monaco for a few years. I used to drink in the Ship and Castle in Monaco and shared a beer or 2 with his dad. Wonderful family and was sad days when he passed. Jenson was brought up the right way and a great driver
Great interview, Button in my opinion one of the nicest guys in F1, Followed his career since his first race at Williams to his last race at Maclaren . always a pleasure to see him about the paddock these days.
I was always a JB fan throughout his F1 career. Good seasons and bad from the beginning. Probably the smoothest and fluid driving style of any driver since Prost. Had a fantastic season in 04 finishing 3rd in the championship behind the unbeatable Ferrari’s. World champion in 09 in an amazing car with a very fast team mate in Barrichello. The difference between him and Hamilton as drivers is obvious. Jenson could never find the one lap qualifying speed the way Lewis could and does. His driving style needed a virtual perfect set up or he struggled. Lewis is a more aggressive driver and it allows him to drive around a car without a perfect set up. That’s it .
Jenson always deliberately leaves out key pieces of context to make himself look better. he’s such an arrogant bellend that disguises him by being a nice guy.
He beat Lewis in one season when they were teammates so that counts. Lewis is not unbeatable (in the same car bla bla bla),he is just so good and consistent. Bottas 3.0 has a chance.
Button knows deep down in his heart, that he was just a mediocre F1 driver, who on occasion exhibited "rare moments" of greatness, combined with luck, in a rather "unspectacular" manner! - a sentiment shared by the overwhelming majority of the F1 Community (Past & Present).
@@Cal3000 Bottas' very fast, but raw talent is a determinating factor as to when you're gonna plateau in your evolution. Valtteri will always hit a wall before he can find the extra pace to beat Lewis. Nico needed Lewis' data, engineer and mechanics, and Lewis' unreliability to barely scrape by at the last race. Valtteri has had some of the same advantages and still the truth remain. Max Verstappen himself said that he is 'perplexed as to how Lewis can do all the extra curriculars and still be able to deliver at the highest level, because he himself is 💯 focus on racing only all the time'. Jenson was very good but there's a reason why he only won 1 championship and never got close again. He always embellishes his 3 year stint against Lewis at Maca. Only racers the caliber of Max have a shot at beating Lewis in the same car if they can remain consistant. Bottom line is if he stays long enough in F1 Lewis will slow down and become #2 or #3 or #4.
GREAT interview. You asked great questions and let Button answer - no interruptions. GREAT job. Of course, he is usually a great interview - but I thought you got a lot 'out' of him. Thanks.
i don’t get it when people say it’s impossible to identify the best driver of all time, only because it’s hamilton. f1 is a team sport and choosing your team should be a recognised skill. f1 is formulated to find out who the best driver is at every race and over an entire season so why is it so difficult to identify the best? it wasn’t too difficult before hamilton. since when has there ever been a title “one of the winners” or “one of the champions” in f1. there has always been one winner so hamilton is the greatest of all time. button was so quick to say verstappen was the most talented, i wonder how he measured that talent. the bias is so easy to spot button.
hamilton didn't choose merc, daimler wanted heidfeld (who would be for sure atleast 2x champ against Rosberg), after Lauda had started working for merc - he was the "enforcer" of the idea to bring ham to Merc, he had to persuade hamilton, Daimler wanted a german driver in a german car, but Lauda made a "stubborn choice" and Merc considered it as a gamble
If you do a net worth google search Jenson comes up with a number of figures from $20m - $150m. Odd. But do the same search for Damon Hill and only one figure comes up. $30m.
JB is just trolling at this point. He knows damn well that, bar Hamilton's slip ups in 2011, Hamilton outclassed him over their 3 years together and beats him by about 120 points, when driver misfortune is taken into account, which makes this whole narrative about JB outscoring Hamilton completely laughable. JB benefited from Hamilton's woeful luck a ridiculous amount of times. JB did deserve to beat Hamilton in 2011 but In 2012 alone Hamilton's misfortune stopped JB from taking an absolute thumping in the championship standings. The fact that they were only 2 points apart in 2012 is an absolute joke.
Cant we just appreciate drivers for their individual achievements? So many people detracting from Jenson's win and time at mclaren with Lewis. Jenson was an excellent driver. Jenson even admits that the Lewis he was faily close to (performance wise) from 2010 to 2013 is not the same one as today.
Jenson - good call on the road safety. I find it bewildering that people driving a ton, if not two tons of machinery that can kill at low speed let alone high speed. Why do people think they can ignore the highway code (UK) and drive poorly risking themselves and others. I wish the gov't here introduced a 5 year driving test. Normal test - for the same cost of a lesson. Hand your license in at the test center. Do your test. If you pass - the examiner signs your chit, or app to say you can your license back. If you are a sh*te driver - you do not collect your license. You are subject to an immediate ban. You take lessons to resit your test. Once you can prove you are no longer a danger to yourself, other car/van drivers, bikers and pedestrians - they you can have your license back. So many bad drivers now thinking they are so precious and they rules don't apply to them
I don’t understand the fuss surrounding Brawn. It was a rebranded Honda that had a full season of development time behind it as they were so shit in 2008. Not quite as magical as folk make out.
Just saying, but as a really, really long time Formula 1 fan, l thought it was an interesting interview. I heard details about Brawn GP, from Jensen, I had not heard before. And I was watching F1 when James Hunt and Murray Walker did the commentary.
Button is a real champion.... true talent and a true sportsmen. Thats what a champion is, not just someone who wins races but also a good example to the public and for his sport. Hamilton is great but think his still got some growing up to do. For me, of our generation Button is the best.

I’m not sure I care too much about what Button has to say about Hamilton any more. Jensen HAD a lot going for him during his F1 career but that is now a distant memory. What I find a touch irritating is how much, still, the guy is being bigged up for his past achievements and his existing role as ‘an Ambassador of the sport’. Fine. But his feedback on the whole now is pretty irrelevant I believe.
Lewis was for sure better in qualifying but I would point to Jenson's wet driving and tyres management skills which sometimes were the most important or at least the deciding element in some races. I'm a huge supporter of Lewis and his amazing battle to get to 7 championships. Losing to Rosberg may yet prove the most important of all his seasons, I hope it doesn't.
@@Slacky2k13 He was beaten 2-1 over 3 seasons, Hamilton beat him in 2010 by 26 pts finishing 1 race less, in 2012 he finished 3 races less and still beat him, and that was not the more complete Hamilton of today!

This guy is a joke as always, he delusionaly believes he was better than Lewis in races, when we know that Lewis won more races despite suffering more reliability issues. Even in the 2011 season which is touted as Lewis's worst season, He win equal amount of races as Jenslow. The presenter should also asked why he was tottaly rubbish in 2012 season for half a season and even managed to be lapped by Lewis in Canada.
Ha, why are you so triggered? He didn’t say that, he clearly said Lewis was faster but he was competitive because he was better at managing the car at that stage, all of which is evidently true. Either way, why would get so butt hurt, it’s not like he was slagging Lewis off. Save your energy for some actual criticism.
I absolutely do not agree with what he said about Verstappen. He is already the complete driver. Put him a Mercedes and I think you would see how quick he is. He gets everything out of that Redbull. You can tell by how far he is against his teammates. Albon and Gasly are quick drivers and he made mincemeat of them. When he had Riccardo as a teammate he out performed him. Who in turn out performed Vettel when Riccardo was his teammate.

It's been said that anyone who criticises BUTTON, must be a Hamilton Fanboy! . . . However, Button faced scathing criticsm from senior F1 figures long before the Hamilton era . . .

False, the best driver was Yuji Ide
Lmao nope
But you have to look at the car and the competition. There are drivers from the past who had tougher competition, like Senna who was up against some of the best drivers the sport has ever seen. In a car which didn't have a huge advantage, like Merc do at the moment.

In terms of driving intelligence Jenson Button was arguably the greatest. His ability to manage fuel and tyres, his smoothness, was and is, untouchable.
Had to give it a thumbs down because you click baited the Hamilton talk cmon man he spent 2 mins talking about
This is such an excellent, in-depth, and interesting interview.
100% agree.
@Chase Carey Not only do you possess a legendary moustache, you speak the truth.
@Stev Rex That's part of the lacking context in interviews like this, you sarcastic imbecile. wHoA!

@Stev Rex Hit me up, tough guy.
Hamilton the best at this time clearly.
ATL Games It is going to be tough to beat him.
"Fernando's not racing anymore." Man talk about a low key slam on Indy Car.
12:36 the most effortless and casual call-out i have ever witnessed
I remember in 2013 when Jenson took his F1 McLaren to the streets of Frome, (mine and his home town) hearing the V8 engine in real life was one of my greatest experiences
I was there too, the noise that car made bouncing off the shops of the narrow high street is something i wont forget.
He always makes himself sound so much better than he actually was
Is it literally impossible for anyone to talk about Brawn without using the word fairytale?
Everything was put in place by honda ..just a silly idea on their part to run without any real sponsers for the previous two seasons (earth car )
I hear Ross is going to write children`s books when he retires...Hamsel & Russell, the fairytale of 2021...or is it 2022?
Interviewer "It might have been Australia, my memory is not great"

Harsh, was a very good interview by someone who seems like he knows and understands F1
One of the nicest and most real people in F1, I hope he continues to be involved in F1 so we can keep seeing his lovely demeanour!!
Jenson trying to convince himself he is nearly as good as Lewis 😂
He's better than Lewis. But poltics made them prefur Lewis at McClaren. He wrote in his book
dave erwin that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read
@@acke26 at least Jenson had the balls :)
Imagine flooring your supercar, losing control and bumping an F1 Champ. What a spanner he must have felt.
The most underrated driver of the 2000s

All brits are like this
Both are from Somerset!
Jenson has always been my hero since I watched his debut..
I'm still waiting for a journalist to be bold enough to admit the Canada 2011 crash with Lewis was Jenson's fault.
JB and road safety. 100% phones are a killer.
imagine street racing and crashing into a F1 world champion hahah

Your dream came true
He beat Lewis in one season when they were teammates so that counts. Lewis is not unbeatable (in the same car bla bla bla),he is just so good and consistent. Bottas 3.0 has a chance.
agreed...bottas tho? naah
@@truth4reel I'm a Hamilton fan and I think Bottas is really good and has a chance. He is heavily slept on.
All I could concentrate on was the interviewere nose blowing on the mic as Jenson spoke
Lewis and Jenson had a decent relationship
Oh he knows it, as do the journalists. It just doesn't suit their narrative to give Lewis his flowers while he is still in the sport.
"you dont need to be drinking your coffee when you drive you need to focus"
How tf am I supposed to focus if I dont have coffee in me tho?
Cant we just appreciate drivers for their individual achievements? So many people detracting from Jenson's win and time at mclaren with Lewis. Jenson was an excellent driver.
Jenson even admits that the Lewis he was faily close to (performance wise) from 2010 to 2013 is not the same one as today.
In all honestly, Brawn GP would make a good movie (if done right)
Jenson - good call on the road safety.

Over the 3 years Lewis made you look like a numpty! In qualifying, over the race distances. Get over it!
Lewis was for sure better in qualifying but I would point to Jenson's wet driving and tyres management skills which sometimes were the most important or at least the deciding element in some races. I'm a huge supporter of Lewis and his amazing battle to get to 7 championships. Losing to Rosberg may yet prove the most important of all his seasons, I hope it doesn't.
... except he outscored him in the 3 years, some numpty to beat the greatest driver of this generation in the same car.
@@Slacky2k13 He was beaten 2-1 over 3 seasons, Hamilton beat him in 2010 by 26 pts finishing 1 race less, in 2012 he finished 3 races less and still beat him, and that was not the more complete Hamilton of today!
Thats what most Lewis haters dont realise, its not just about having a quick car, you have to get that car quick in the first place, and to do that its all about the driver and the engineer, Lewis is an all rounder, and as such hes a 6x world champion
Then why was Lewis never without a fst car?
This guy is a joke as always, he delusionaly believes he was better than Lewis in races, when we know that Lewis won more races despite suffering more reliability issues. Even in the 2011 season which is touted as Lewis's worst season, He win equal amount of races as Jenslow.
The presenter should also asked why he was tottaly rubbish in 2012 season for half a season and even managed to be lapped by Lewis in Canada.
He never overtake Lewis on track 😁
Incorrect, he ran him off in canada 2011.
Hamilton fans are a joke. Fucking pathetic.
@@KaiserBob99 no your ignorance is pathetic.
Ha, why are you so triggered? He didn’t say that, he clearly said Lewis was faster but he was competitive because he was better at managing the car at that stage, all of which is evidently true. Either way, why would get so butt hurt, it’s not like he was slagging Lewis off. Save your energy for some actual criticism.
jenson is a hero of mine, there's nothing i dont like about him
Question in the title doesn't get asked. Downvote this timewasting clickbait crap.
The paper champ that won in a lottery championship and almost bottled it to an old Ruben's Lol
IDK about Hamilton, but JB is definitely epitome of a good guy.
REALITY
- In Button was in his younger days, he was indisciplined and wild, & was consequently labelled a PLAYBOY! and was heavily criticised by the likes of Jackie Stewart & Nigel Mansell was less tgan impressed by his mediocracy
See Link ....
www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/jenson-button-the-playboy-who-found-425722
- He was also released from Williams for a time in favour of Montoya
- Things went even worse when he was under Renault
- When Jenson won the World Championship Brawn Mgmt did NOT want their newly crowned Champion
- Button's Manager openly criticised Brawn's Management and their slow pace to re-sign "their" new world Champion
- Instead, they eventually did a dirt cheap deal with McLaren to take on Button
- McLaren at the time, were going through an internal civil mgmt war and Whitmarsh had taken over from Ron Dennis
- Whitmarsh was no leader, and under his watch lost Key ppl like Paddy Lowe, Pat Fry and his Team.
- Whitmarsh was easily manipulated (as skillfully done by Button)
- Button then craftly manoevred the team around himself
- In the 3 seasons that the more experienced Button, and the younger Hamilton were together, Button only managed to beat him to a Championship "once" during an "off-peak" year for Hamilton
- Button went on to cheat on his wife with his current partner
ALL the above is in the puplic dormain, and whilst it's part of life, had Hamilton had the same chequered past as Button, he would have been "HUNG, DRAWN & QUARTERED" . . . so it's a bit odd that certain quarters with their obvious amnesia seem to want to exaggerate his medicore skillset in order to elevate him to Sainthood!
Nice guy but a shit driver
Ok, you've got a supercar, and you think you can drive. You just crashed it into Jenson Button. Would have loved to have seen that guy's face!
I don't think Lewis is really better than Button. Look at 2011
