Gen 1 Battling Explained: • The BEST Pokemon of Ge...
DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Thank you to Poke Saurus for the correction. Aerodactyl actually learns hone claws. Though it is used in UU, I don't think hone claws is enough to boost it to OU. I will pin this since annotations aren't a thing anymore.
False Swipe Gaming could you do swampert next?
Also, by your voice i thought that you yo old for school.
False Swipe Gaming Do magikarp next
False Swipe Gaming do tyranitar next
Do onix plz!!!!
Anyone else salty that Aerodactyl can't learn Brave Bird or Head Smash?
JaketheMongoose Those would easily boost Aerodactyl (non mega) up. Banded Aerodactyl would be a great revenge killer.
JaketheMongoose, those 2 moves AND Rock Head for an ability AND high speed? That's not Overused, that's overkill.
Nick Cruz Banded Head Smash OHKO's Dragonite. It's more than just UU, imo, though it's held back by having no good set up moves and few purposes beyond revenge killing or being an anti-lead.
Bruh
Aerodactyl, at MOST, would probs be a top tier OU threat.
+Mic Drop Also hone claws + toughclaws when mega. Is insane.
What if fossil Pokémon weren't rock types before they were fossilized? Like aerodactyl was a dragon flying type during prehistoric Pokémon times? Also, I think the kabuto line were water bug types before they were fossilized.
Real Black Lion Fossil pokemon always confused me that they were all rock types. Its such a waste
Real Black Lion I think it would be awesome if your idea became an Alolan form
I wondered about that too. Relicanth makes me sceptical though, as it's primitive and also rock type, so it kind of implies there was just a time when just about everything was rock type.
Relicanth isn't a fossil Pokemon as it was never revived from a fossil. :P The only thing it has in common is that it is based on coelacanths a case of a creature known for its fossils long before it was discovered alive. (which if Pokemon truly followed would mean Lileep and Cradily would still be around as Crionoids aren't extinct either)
Now The animal the Kabuto line is based off, the trilobites, would likely be a far different story as the trilobites as they were one of the most armored creatures the earth has ever seen if not the most armored ever in the fossil record probably being the only animals to even armor their eyes by evolving transparent silicate eyes in addition to their full body armor meaning I can't see any typing other than rock/water or steel/water for them(not to mention that other than the body shape they don't competitively function like a trilobite would have as they were pretty much the real world shuckle that fed more like a spider(sucking out their prey's innards) Thus if based on more science would probably have been a shuckle variant that actually could attack (I find it ludicrous that Kabutops can't learn Leech Life factoring in both past dex entries and its real life analog)
I would really love to see prehistoric formes for fossil Pokemon there is a lot of potential there for a new take on fossil Pokemon.
(Or in the case of Lileep/Cradilly perhaps a modern form given that the animals they are based on aren't extinct perhaps a form based on their most successful modern relatives the feather stars?)
+Dragath1
I never called relicanth a fossil pokémon, I just said it was primitive, which is pretty much confirmed by its Ruby dex entry.

You actually can use Hone Claws on him, not only you get an attack boost, but also an accuracy boost so that Stone Edge won't miss anymore.

Fun (and late) fact: There is a genus named after Aerodactyl, known as Aerodactylus!

How GOOD was Magikarp ACTUALLY?
The Sophomancer WTF are you talking about magikarp is the strongest Pokemon ever created it wrecks everything in every gen
kaancem buyukcolak
Bullshit. Unown kills it! But Unown is the strongest Pokemon, so yeah, Magikarp kicks ass.
In all seriousness, Unown needs a cluster form. Its lore is that its extremely powerful in groups. And can distort reality n shit, tear the fabric of reality if too many off them get together.
It needs a wishiwashi ability where its in a cluster of unown as long as its HP is above red. And its stats are all evenly decent except for attack.
and the universe collapses and your gamesave gets corrupted.

The Poke'Saurus I guess no one thought about that. Or they probably thought Aerodacytl couldnt take a hit to set up. And remember PRIORITY!
But it's good against those without priority and wall breaking!
Not good as Swords Dance but still good, at least you will stop missing the fucking Stone Edge.
Pokemon Trainer Sans Hone claws was actually super common
Aerodactyl with Rock Head ability with Brave Bird and Head Smash, with same base speed as Crobat!?!? If ONLY Aerodactyl had those moves. Why... GF... Why...
Rock Head is useless for Aerodactyl. Thankfully, it also has access to the Pressure ability to make opponents spend twice as much PP per turn, which for Aerodactyl, can be helpful with a Sub/Protect Leftovers stall build with Rock Slide as coverage.
@@generalsynnacle23 Do you *really* think Aero can live through a Thunder, Blizzard or Hydro Pump with its 'bulk'? And do you *really* think I have to worry when I absolutely cream your Aero and have 6 more PP on either Thunder, Blizzard or Hydro Pump for 5 more Pokemon? And if you think those moves won't land because they have terrible accuracy well guess what, Rock Slide doesn't land every time either. You don't 'stall' with flinch. You stall with Toxic (Crobat...?), Will-o-Wisp, etc and you couple it up with Protect and Substitute and have another move like Tailwind (Aero, and also Crobat) for team support. How do you compare Aero to Dusclops???
@@miramirza2 You underestimate the power of stall for even the most fragile of cannons. If you can stall with an Infernape, Aerodactyl is possible. Also you overestimate your accuracy chances with Thunder, Blizzard, etc. Enough defense investments can help live through an Ice Beam or Thunderbolt too.
@@generalsynnacle23 if you are going to think of walling with aerodactyl, youre going to die some of the 1st pokemon you will see,it just dies to really common priority
@@notvex3987 Use Assault Vest or specific berries to weaken the power of those moves.
You should do Rhydon/Rhyperior. I say this because although Rhydon has a decent history from Gen 1 to Gen 3, in Gen 4 it was straight up outclassed by Rhyperior, but with Gen 5 eviolite gave it some more tools to work with. I think it could make for an interesting video.
Do the 3 kanto eeveelutions Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon like you did with the Legendary Birds
I Like Tr8ns personally I'd like to see them all in 1 video
shadowrobot he can t do 3 mons in one video. 6 metas for each one? 30 minutes video
TBA Channel But he could. He has never said he wants to keep the videos a certain length of time and he has done multiple mons in the same video before. Also since the 3 are so iconic as being a trio (even more so than the birds), it would make sense to do them at the same time
shadowrobot That's a horrible idea that would hurt the length and quality.
NightPonyGaming if that's how you feel then I can't change it but I see no reason on why it would hurt the quality of the video. We would get to the the comparison of the trio and how each one did differently in the same video instead of 3 different ones
3:46 "Rock and Ground hits everything for at least neutral damage."
Wrong. Breloom.
This would also mean Virizion and Chesnaught later on.
You guys forgot that Aerodactyl is part flying, they may resist QuakeSlide but still wouldn't dare switch in to a Tough Claws boosted Aerial Ace.
@@butteredsalmonella Especially because Grass/Fighting is 4x weak to Flying.
@@butteredsalmonella That isn't what I was refuting. I was just pointing out this particular sentence was wrong. Also, gen 3 Aero doesn't have Tough Claws.
Claydol too
As I watch this I get a shiny Aerodactyl in Ultra Moon.

Pokemon Red and Blue PokéDex entry:
"A ferocious, prehistoric Pokémon that goes for the enemy's throat with its serrated saw-like fangs."
If we're going with fossil Pokémon let's go with kabutops
And Lord Helix, the god of anarchy
Hitmonchan because of the access to elemental punches in gen IV, getting an advantage from the special split, and so on
Maxonerous X still sucks bc outclassed by every other fighting type lol
I still think it would be an interesting video
Hitmonlee video would be better
smaragdchaos but why? Access to hi jump kick? Hitmonlee doesn't change that much throughout the generations
Well, Hitmonlee is the best fighting type mon in gen 1 at least, because Hitmonlee has the best fighting type move. In UU tier, Hitmonlee is a really solid choice (unlike Hitmonchan, who is mostly a gimmick). Hitmonlee in most generations is RU-UU and in gen II it had even OU set. Hitmonchan had been UU for the first 2 gens, then dropped into NU for another 2 gens, slightly climbed to RU in fifth gen, dropped to NU in 6th gen and now dropped to PU (worst possible tier) in 7th gen.
How good was metapod ACTUALLY?

Nah, He was actually quite good in the first gen and mediocre in gen 2. High-ish speed, attack and HP and access to EQ, Rock Slide, and STAB Hyper Beam. His only weakness "fight" was attack based and he had decent enough defense to survive one or two hits from a low fight movepool. 4 or 5 best Normal type pokemon in gen 1. I love that corrupted computer Pokémon (I mean it evolves via dubious disk)
FalseSwipeGaming: How GOOD was Aerodactyle ACTUALLY?
Me: DAMN HE STRONG AND FAST AS HELL.
Please do Scizor! You've brought him up a lot in other video's so I think it's time for him to get his own.
He brings him up a lot because he was THE gen 4 pokemon. Kinda like Snorlax in gen 2.
You often show battles with Scizor in them, can you do a video about him? Maybe even include Scyther like you did with Chansey/Blissey :)
How about some Gen 2 power with Heracross? 😀

I remember my first Fossil Pokémon was Aerodactyl, I named him Death and he was what made the Elite 4 shiver in fear, and once he Mega Evolved his name was the only thing his opponents knew!
One correction: "The two part combo of Rock Slide and Earthquake hits absolutely everything for at least neutral damage." Flygon and Claydol both resist Rock Slide and are immune to Earthquake.

NIDOKING AND NIDOQUEEN NEXT PLEASE!!!!.
Please do Nidoking
People are right it’s dumb that Aerodactyl can’t have Head Smash or Brave Bird. And it turns out in Gen 7 and 8, Game Freak *STILL* didn’t give it to Aerodactyl.
But you know what’s *absurdly* screwed up? It’s had Rock Head since Gen 3, but after Gen 3, Game Freak *took away* Double Edge and in every generation since, they *never* gave it back.
I can see not getting Wood Hammer, but flat out screwing it for Double Edge?! All Aerodactyl has for a recoil move is Take Down, and that isn’t worth a move slot. Not even Submission either, and that would at least be usable coverage.
I wonder how bad other Rock Head users have it…
I feel Aerodactyl, at the LEAST, should get Flare Blitz and Wild Charge because then at least his god damn ability isn't utterly useless. Admittedly, STAB Head smash and Brave Bird with no recoil would perhaps be too difficult to deal with, but he wouldn't be flat out unstoppable. He's weak to all common priority and has a horrible defensive typing with poor defensive stats, with a stealth rock weakness. He'd switch in, take 25% and easily fall into Ice Shard / Bullet Punch/ Aqua jet or water shuriken range for a KO to say nothing of Pokémon running a choice scarf.
It's such a shame because he's my favourite Pokémon of all time, and he's so close to setting the world on fire he just literally needs a tiny push! It's ridiculous that his best flying STAB is Dual Wingbeat, Aerial Ace, Fly and god damn wing attack.
@@tomhuddleston1850 Aerodactyl is fast enough there's no reason you *couldn't* be super obnoxious with Fly after Gen 4 upgraded the power to base 90 from 70.
Twister and Gust operate at double the power and wouldn't miss without tampering, but why bother?
And while there's apparently a decent list of moves that would hit it while semi-invulnerable, how often would you see them in action to stop you outright that are viable? Some of them have lackluster Accuracy, and would even be more difficult to land under Bright Powder.
(Sky Uppercut, Smack Down, Hurricane, Thunder, Thousand Arrows, and the No Guard ability)
Earthquake, Fissure and Magnitude won't work unless under Lock On or Mind Reader, though.
How about doing the original 3 eeveelutions?
YES!! I want to see the Eevee trio too!
Totally! I want to see all the Eeveelutions done.
In my opinion he should wait a bit longer with that. he had the bird trio not that long ago and so itis better to have other trio's/combination of pokemon to have them more spread out and just ''normal'' pokemon in between.
Flareon's section would be real short
Here you go:
Jolteon one of the fastest pokemon ever, but had a shit movepool in gen 1
Vaporeon: super bulky water type
Flareon: sucks huge donkey balls
1. take your time, seriously we subscribed for a reason
2. only do it if you like to do it, don't force yourself
Bukan Hamid What are you talking about?
Bukan Hamid he works on each video for a week so clearly he takes his time & at no point did he ever hint at not enjoying it, he just won't have the time once school starts. Watch the video next time.
this always happens when I try to be nice to people, next time I'll be as rude as possible
I agree. It's fine if the videos end up being far apart because they're worth the wait. Never make the vids if you don't like to do it anymore.
Oh trust me I love doing it. I just want to be able to put out more content a week :) luv all of you
so now that nobody will say "oh false swipe is only doing gen 1 pokemon" CAN WE PLEASE HAVE SCIZOR
I know, I'm getting soooooo sick of almost exclusively getting Gen 1
It makes a lot of sense to do gen 1 tho, as that is the gen with the most content.
Scyther AND Scizor
Victor4X not so much anymore. most of the remaining pokemon in gen 1 don't have that interesting of a history because most of them never changed from what they were in gen 1 and they just got bad with power creep. So even though you only cover 5 generations with scizor and tyranitar instead of 6, pokemon like exeggutor, Golem and lapras do the exact same thing in multiple generations. I think is just as much less content as you would get from skipping gen 1
YES SCIZOR
Can you please do slowbro? You could do slowking aswell if you wanted
You gotta do a video on the Porygon line and the Scyther line!
One of the coolest looking flying pokemon imo
How good was Tangela/Tangrowth

Tangrowth: fat
IDWpresents cool opinion bro guess it's trash even tho it's been in ou
I thought Garbador was the trash pokemon?
EdgyExploud I mean conkeldurr used to be in ou but I think you'd hesitate to call it good
Let's do some gen 2 pokemon! It's Tyranitar time! Seriously, that thing was OP since GSC
I loved those early games. Just walk into a random lab and steal some old amber. Walk into some guys apartment and steal his eevee. Then bribe the guards with some lemonade to make a get away. Lmao
Jolteon?
well that would be a simple video. Does Thunder/Tbolt on 130 base speed do well in this meta: Y/N?
It later(on in generations) gets Signal Beam, Shadow Ball and even Volt Switch eventually which gives it some coverage.
It exists
I'd love to see some work on how good Crobat was, I think it'd be interesting.
Can you do Slowbro please
Shiny Milotic i want slowbro too :)
And slide in slowking along with slowbro.
Shiny Milotic yeah!
Yup also mega slowbro
coolmagicarp 2 welp it will be too cuz he cover the mega too
Good Video 👍
What about Golem?
Everyone says scizor so do scyther in the same video but cover only scyther in gen5 and 6 just like chansey and blissey
No, they are diffrent enough that they deserve their own separate videos
IDWpresents+ I mean he could just do Scizor and Scyther he did it with Chansey and Blissey.
no that's my point. Blissey and chansey compeditivly are practicaly are the same pokemon with diffrent names. Scyther and scizor however are quite diffrent. Scyther can't Spam STAB bullet punch because it dosen't learn bullet punch, and Scizor isn't good in lower tiers because it isn't legal in lower tiers.
That is very true but he could make a video talking about both of them it would probably only take about a few minutes more. However you're very correct about them being very different I get people saying all the time that they're the same Pokemon just with slightly boosted stat's and a new typing so thank's for saying that they're different I appreciate it.
I don't think so because there are only two generations where they were used in the same meta. Scyther has an interesting compeditive history only if you consider its success in lower tiers so that would nearly double the number of metagames false has to cover in one video.
If only this is a possible moveset for mega aerodactyl
Dual wingbeat
Accelerock
Dragon Dance
Roost
Aerodactyl had always made it into my team when I used to play (I stopped with ORAS). The first episode of the anime it appeared in, which was the same episode where Ash's Charmeleon evolved into Charizard, was the reason why I always loved it.
I found charmeleons evolution and ash’s reaction to it the highlight in thst one.
Do Sharpedo next, that's my and my gf's favorite Pokémon
I use Sharpedo in every battle I do
Forrest I love Sharpedo too, I also think he should do Sharpedo.
SHARPEDO YES!
can we get like a combo video for Glaceon, Leafeon, and Sylveon since they wouldn't have as much to cover
The problem with Mega Aerodactyl is its ability is a waste. Stab rock moves don't get a boost, Earthquake doesn't get a boost and while its flying stabs get a boost they are terribly weak. It seems like Megadactyl is the only pokemon who could make Tough Claws bad.
My Mega Aerodactyl had a great showing in gen 6. I played doubles and had it running Sunny Day, Sky Drop, Roost and Rock Slide. I paired it with a specd Typhlosion running Eruption and for some reason everyone would focus on taking out the mega rather than attacking the nuke in the corner.
lol, didnt even realize this video was 2 1/2 years old, usually you notice a video that old compared to the new ones.
History of rhydon or golem plz
Carlos Andrade He would do Rhyperior since that's it's final evolution now. However, he could just do what he did for Chansey, and the same goes for the Porygon line, which would be VERY interesting.
rhydon is a bit more in depth, but golem.
gen 1, psychic types took away fighting types, so golem was mostly in the clear as a gerat defensive mon. Only htings like starmie scared it. It was top tier.
gen 2 and 3 With steel types as gerat defensive mons and more waters, it suddenly shot down to bottom tier.
gen 4-7 Stealth rock helpe dit a bit but not neough for nu, rock polish also works. Plus alolem explosion.
STrate dout great, then shit, then bad.
Can you do cloyster? It is a good sweeper

Yvette Masterson why would you even want that? I can make it in 2 sentence.
#1 until gen 6. still amazing after
Theres your ttar review
Very yes.
GIVE IT HEAD SMASH AND BRAVE BIRD! Please validate the existence of Rock head and make Aerodactyl OU.
And Dragon Dance.
@Ice Why not.
Some people think that aerodactyl is the ancestor of zubat and i can prove that, because aerodactyl is reserected by an old Amber that is normaly mosqitos trapped in "the blod of trees". ( I'm not good at english)
Golem would be amazing. Thank you for the hard work! Keep it up
How about raichu or lucario next?
He doesn't do the current gen, so he should let the gen one pokémons who got alolan forms last.

Can you try tyranitar please?
How good was Marowak?
Do the slow Brothers pls
I'm not a competetive player, but in game gen 3 Aerodactyl was so satisfying. To finally get rock slide and a no recoil ability made all that speed so much fun to abuse.
Personally, my biggest issue with Gen 1 isn't the abusable mechanics or other bugs. It's the fact there were Pokemon that couldn't take advantage of STAB moves, all three fossils are, unfortunately, ones that suffer from this. Aerodactyl, obviously, lacked a rock type move. Omastar? Even if it had a rock type move, it wouldn't be particularly appealing with its low attack. Kabutops? Physical attacker but, like Aerodactyl, doesn't learn a rock move. During my playthroughs of gen 1 (since really learning how to play the game), I've actively avoiding using specific Pokemon because of this very issue, and I'll also avoid Pokemon with similar issues in the later gens.
I'd love to see scizor being covered
Mega Aero gets Hone claws not just Agility so it can in some regards set up
how good was blazeiken?
Hyper Beam! gen 3: pretty okay
gen 4: outclassed by infernape
gen 5-7:blows everything and everyone with a sky hi speed thanks to speed boost
Infernape does what blaziken does without needing a choice scarf in gen 4.
Blaziken noticed this, and got speed boost in gen 5 to became a demon.
gustavo pinto and don't forget if blaziken can't defeat an opponent will just baton pass its speed(sometimes attack if lucky) to something else that's powerful and now fast.
and then there's mega blaziken who fucks your team up with base 160 attack, very strong dual STABs and an above average speed tier (100) before speed boost and then gets the fuck out with BP to pass 2 or 3 speed boosts to idk primaldon or something who cares it's ez to get the boosts they're expendable af
no he is also doing other generations .-.
I would like a video on Primeape, I just got announced that I have diabete and also I'm back from a foot surgery. I'm just 16 years old but Primeape is my favourite gen 1 pokemon and it'd be fun for me after these bad times to learn more about Primeape's competitive history.
“If it had an offensive setup move then maybe it could bust up bulkier pokémon.”
Hone claws: goodbye
Aerodactil should have brave bird and head smash.
How about Nidoking?? :)
Scyther/scizor?
A vicious Pokémon from the distant past, it appears to have flown by spreading its wings and gliding.
Great job on these videos! I'd love to see you cover Tangela/ Tangrowth.
Nidoking or beedill
Has Beedrill ever been good?
mega beedrill has
SO DO BEEDRILL FAM!
Mega Beedrill is one of the best OU pokémon because of its insane attack and speed. Mega evolution did wonders for Beedrill.

In gen 3, aerodactyl’s hidden power was really the power it already should have had
One of my favourite Pokémon ever.
The design is flawless, it's lightning fast and packs a considerable punch.
Too bad Gens 1&2 did it so dirty with the movepool
How about breloom
do tyranitar pls
Scyther and Scizor
Hey I don't know anything about competitive Pokemon but I've been listening to a lot of these lately and they're really interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing Muk or Primeape! Thanks!
I'm here from the future. It lost its Mega, but got D Dance
Jolteon
Nidoking and nidoqueen next please
Do Nidoking!
Fun fact up until fire red & leaf green aerodactyl didn't have rock slide bcoz there was no tutors in ruby and sapphire
Do Golem! I'm training one now, so I really want a breakdown of it's usefulness!
